I am a bowhunter

2015-06-30T17:07:00.002-04:00

Bowhunting, this is my way of being, my way of life, my way of saying how I am. The need is internal. The happiness to hunt with a bow is immense and irresistible. When I bowhunt, I feel live, I feel that I am part of the earth, that I am part of nature, that I am part of life itself. Hunting, it is a part of what I am. I am a bowhunter.

I can't recognize me otherwise. I am not part of these cities and villages built on concrete and asphalt. I need wide open spaces and fresh air to breathe and think.

And these things do not exist in the cities and towns. These things are elsewhere, in the hills and mountains, in the trees and wild forests, in streams and rivers. I am a bowhunter.

Sometimes you will see me near a brook that tweets, as do girls playing outside. Then at the edge of the forest, listening to the rustling of the wind in the trees and the singing of birds.

Nature continually speaks to us but no one has time to listen, because life goes too fast and 100 at a time it hears more nothing.

Over the years, I found my balance, my territory, my place. Proud and athletic but crafty, cautious and nervous, I am unpredictable and inscrutable. I live in the world of instinct, in the world of sounds and scents. I am a bowhunter.

I revolves around your urban world and you don't see me. I don't want to annoy especially not you. I'm just trying to live my life without disturbing anyone. When I disapear, you will see even not as a cunning Hunter leaves no trace nor scent.

It was the opinion of the blogger in this may 22, 2015.

Sauver des vies

2013-08-14T12:36:00.001-04:00

A protecting shield

2013-08-07T11:35:00.003-04:00

Intruder on your hunting territory

2013-08-07T11:28:00.001-04:00

Against hunting: think twice

2013-08-07T11:23:00.001-04:00

Long-gun registry in Québec

2012-12-11T16:53:00.006-05:00

Québec Public Security Minister indicated that they would like to have the gun control registry data. I publish here an article from Gary Mauser of the National Post about the long-gun registry.

Gary Mauser: Why the long-gun registry doesn’t work — and never did

Gary Mauser, Special to National Post | Dec 11, 2012 12:01 AM ET
More from Special to National Post

Ethan Miller/Getty Images A sales associate takes a gun from a display of shotguns at The Gun Store in Las Vegas, Nev., in 2008.

In March, Stephen Harper’s government reversed decades of increasing restrictions on civilian firearms, scrapping the controversial long-gun registry on grounds that it was wasteful and ineffective. Gun laws, the prime minister correctly said, should focus on criminals rather than law-abiding citizens such as farmers and hunters.

Some claim that this Conservative policy flies in the face of a mountain of evidence, and even represents an assault against reason. Canadian voters seem divided on this issue, as well as some basic related questions: Are firearms in the hands of ordinary citizens a serious threat to public safety? Is registration an effective approach to controlling misuse? How useful was the long-gun registry to police? This article will answer some of those questions.

Gun laws generally tend to be passed during periods of fear or instability, and only occasionally reversed afterwards. In 1913, for instance, a fear of immigrants prompted Ottawa’s first serious handgun legislation, requiring civilians to obtain a police-issued permit to acquire or carry handguns. Non-British immigrants found it difficult to get a permit.

Fearing labour unrest as well as American rum-runners, Ottawa mandated handgun registration in 1934. In 1941, concerned about possible Japanese sabotage, the government prohibited all “Orientals” (including Chinese) from owning firearms. (After the war, these restrictions were rescinded.) Terrorism in Quebec swayed opinion in the 1960s and ’70s, spurring Ottawa to limit handgun permits for “protection” to a handful of people, such as retired police and prospectors. In 1977, a Firearms Acquisition Certificate (FAC) was required to obtain ordinary rifles and shotguns. (The police decided to refuse an FAC to anyone who indicated a desire for self-protection. This is shocking given that in a typical year, tens of thousands of Canadians use firearms to protect themselves or their families, mostly from wildlife.)

The 1989 École Polytechnique massacre in Montreal prompted the Mulroney government to introduce Bill C-17 in 1991, prohibiting a large number of military-style rifles and shotguns. FAC applicants were now required to provide a photograph and references, and to submit to police screening. (Typically, vetting involves telephone checks with neighbours and spouses or ex-spouses.)

In 1993, the Liberals brought in additional changes to gun laws, passing Bill C-68 in 1995 (the Firearms Act). Over half of all registered handguns in Canada were prohibited. No evidence was provided that these handguns had been misused.

The heart of the Firearms Act to this day is licensing: Owning a firearm, an ordinary rifle or shotgun became a criminal offence for those who do not hold a valid licence. In addition, the 1995 law broadened police powers of search and seizure, and expanded the types of officials who could make use of such powers, and weakened constitutionally-protected rights against self-incrimination. To coincide with the “National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women,” the Firearms Act became law on Dec. 5, 1995. However, it took until 1998 to issue licences and require buyers to register long guns. In 2001, all gun owners were required to have a licence and, by 2003, to register all of their rifles and shotguns.

Not everyone complied. An estimated 65% of firearms owners registered at least one rifle or shotgun, and no more than half of all long guns ended up in the registry. Opposition was intense and has never abated. Grassroots anger helped to fuel the rise of the Reform Party, and contributed to the elimination of the Liberals as a political force in the West. Despite their mutual antagonism, three opposition parties (Reform, Progressive Conservative and New Democrat) united against the legislation. Only the Bloc Québécois voted with the Liberals.

In 2002, the auditor-general revealed that the Firearms Centre had grown out of control. Despite political promises that the program would not cost over $2-million, costs were expected to exceed $1-billion by 2005. By 2012, this had ballooned to $2.7-billion. The auditor-general uncovered irregularities including mismanagement and corruption. Her findings stimulated a parliamentary revolt. In 2003, Parliament imposed an annual spending cap. The auditors’ reports led to RCMP investigations of Liberal insiders and contributed to the fall of the Liberal government in 2006.

To this day, it has been claimed that the registry is important in protecting women. But in fact, there is no convincing evidence that registering firearms has been effective in reducing either homicide rates overall, or spousal murders in particular. Even though homicide rates have been gradually falling since the 1970s, a wide variety of researchers have been unable to find solid evidence linking gun laws to this decline. Changing demographics, not firearms laws, better explain the decline in homicides involving long guns over the past 20 years. It is difficult to argue that Canadian gun laws are effective when homicide rates have dropped faster in the United States than in Canada since 1991.

Another argument is that strict laws are required to monitor potentially dangerous gun owners. However, in my Senate testimony, I presented Statistics Canada data to show that anyone who has legally obtained a gun is less likely to be murderous than other Canadians. This should not surprise anyone: Firearms owners have been screened for criminal acts since 1979; and since 1992, they have been stripped of their firearms in cases where they commit a violent crime. (Ironically, Canada does not currently have in place a coherent system that tracks violent criminals on probation or parole — instead choosing to track law-abiding, licensed duck hunters, farmers and recreational sport shooters.)

A third claim is that long guns are the weapon of choice in domestic homicides, and that registration can help to identify the perpetrator. (This is related to the aforementioned claim that guns promote violence against women.) In fact, the long-gun registry and licensing are rarely needed by police to solve spousal homicides for three reasons: (1) in almost all cases, spousal murderers are immediately identified; (2) firearms are not often used to kill female spouses; and (3) the firearms used by abusive spouses to kill their wives are almost all possessed illegally. Statistics Canada data show that just 4% of long guns involved in homicides were registered.

In a typical year, there are almost 600 homicides and 60 female spousal murders in Canada. On average, long guns are involved in the deaths of just 11 female spouses. It is knives, not long guns, that are the weapons used most often to kill women. Statistics Canada found that most spouses (65%) accused of homicide had a history of violence involving the victim. None of these spouses could legally own a firearm.
Every home has a variety of objects, such as hammers or kitchen knives, that can be used for assault or murder. Creating expensive bureaucracies to register one or more of these items does nothing to protect vulnerable women.

A fourth assertion is that the long-gun registry is an important tool for the police because they use it 14,000 to 17,000 times daily. Besides mistaking frequency of use with usefulness, this claim is disingenuous because it confuses the long-gun registry with the Canadian Firearms Registry Online (CFRO). Almost 98% of the queries to the CFRO concern licensing, not the long-gun registry. The firearms registry contains only gun-specific data, such as the make or model.

The statistics show that police recover registered long guns in just 1% of homicides. During the eight years from 2003 to 2010, there were 4,811 homicides; 1,485 of those involved firearms; only 45 featured long guns registered to the accused. In none of these few cases have the police been able to say that the long-gun registry provided the identity of the murderer.

A fifth contention is that the registry tells the police who has firearms. This is false. Neither licensing nor the long-gun registry contains information about unregistered firearms. The most dangerous criminals have not registered their firearms. Trusting the registry can get police officers killed. When police approach a dangerous person or situation, they must assume there could be an illegal weapon. For this reason, experienced police officers have testified that they do not find the registry helpful.

A sixth claim is that the data in the long-gun registry are too valuable to be destroyed. Unfortunately, the many errors and omissions in the registry vitiate its utility. The RCMP testified to the auditor-general that they could not rely on it in court. Recent information shows that many errors remain despite the best efforts of the Canadian Firearms Program. Immense problems similarly have been reported concerning the accuracy of the South African firearms registry and the now-abandoned New Zealand long-gun registry.

The RCMP has reported error rates between 43% and 90% in firearms applications and registry information. An Access to Information request discovered that 4,438 stolen firearms had been successfully reregistered without alerting authorities. Apparently, the thieves had resold the firearms to new owners who (unsuspectingly) had subsequently registered them. This is a classic database problem: garbage in, gospel out. The irregularities stem from multiple causes inherent in any registration system.

The evidence shows that the long-gun registry has not been effective in reducing criminal violence. Nor is the Canadian experience unique. No international study of firearm laws by criminologists or economists has found support for the claim that restricting access to firearms by civilians reduces criminal violence. And so ending the long gun registry is consistent with the basic principles of good fiscal management. Arguably any government program that fails to achieve its objectives should be shut down.

In abolishing the long-gun registry, the Harper government was acting in accordance with the available evidence. It is the government’s opponents, whose ideological belief in the unproven efficacy of gun control blinds them to fact, who are out of step with the available evidence.

Guest post: Hearing Loss Caused by Hunting

2012-11-20T10:28:00.001-05:00

Hi my name is John O'Connor, I am a father, outdoorsman and passionnate about living a healthy lifestyle. Over the past few years I have become more and more interested in hearing loss. My father and grandfathers, who are and were all hunters, are affected by hearing loss. I feel that there is a general lack of understanding around this issue and it is our job to spread awareness where we can. Check out my blog at: bloggingwjohno.blogspot.com

Noise-Induced Hearing Loss Caused by Hunting

If you are ever exposed to noise that is loud or extremely loud for an extended period of time, you could experience noise-induced hearing loss, often referred to as NIHL. These loud sounds can damage sensitive structures in the ears called hair cells which can result in hearing loss. When the hair cells are damaged, they won't submit the correct signals to the brain when sound enters your ears. Many may not think this but some recreational activities can cause hearing loss. Hunting and shooting in general are common causes of noise-induced hearing loss. Safety while hunting is important, and ear protection is equally critical.

Effects of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss

Loud sounds can damage both the hair cells and the hearing nerve in the ear. An impulse sound is a one-time exposure to an intensely loud sound that can cause permanent or temporary loss in hearing. It also may result in tinnitus which is a buzzing, ringing or roaring sound in the ears. Both conditions can also occur during exposure to loud sounds over time. In this case, the damage is progressive. With hunting, you probably won't notice the damage right away. In either case, temporary or permanent damage is possible. If it's temporary, it may disappear in about 16 to 48 hours.

Hunting is a common cause of hearing loss because of extended loud sounds. The sound of a shotgun or rifle next to the ear repeatedly can damage the hair cells over time. Hunters frequently rely on hearing. Proper protection will allow hunters to preserve their hearing. My father who has been hunting for years is affected severely by hearing loss. He often times while hunting throughout the years neglected his hearing. Although not the only cause of his hearing loss, his doctors say that hunting did play a major role in him losing his hearing. In his late 70’s now, he wears hearing aids to amplify sounds and increase his overall hearing levels.

Protection at the Shooting Range and While Hunting

There are several different kinds of ear protection including electronic headsets and passive earmuffs. Earmuffs come in a variety of styles including behind the neck, over the head or cap-mounted. Earmuffs are typically less expensive than the electronic type. Electronic headsets are equally as effective as earmuffs but with added benefits. Hunters need to hear what's going on around them, which is difficult with earmuffs. Electronic headsets allow them to listen to normal sound levels but kick in for protection during shooting. Other features include volume controls and automatic shut off. Electronic headsets do cost more and require batteries.
Protecting your ears every time you hunt is extremely important. Even if you seem fine after hunting without protection in the beginning, you might not realize that the damage is building up. The hair cells in your ears are withering away every time you shoot a firearm without protection. Whether you're in a shooting range or out hunting, use proper ear protection. Spending a little more money on protective electronic earmuffs will allow you to get the full hunting experience while preserving your hearing now and for the future.

This passion is about what ?

2012-09-13T16:56:00.000-04:00

The passion is about bowhunting

This passion is an affective state manifested by an exclusive and durable attachment to an activity. The passion sometimes dominates the personality of the bowhunter and often determines his behavior. One can easily see that state of mind in a deer bowhunter.

Passion effectively clears all other concerns, all other wishes are then moved to the future. The burst of the passion for hunting in the spirit of a bowhunter, breaks its internal balance and orients its activities to satisfy the need.

This passion is characterized by its intensity and its particular vividness. The concentration of attention and energy on deer bowhunting is definitely an oriented behavior.

It can be said without a doubt, that passion is an energy that allows a bowhunter to achieve his ambitions. But how does it work ? Is it an illusion ?

Do not try to reason a bowhunter

It rarely manages to reason an enthusiast, to listen to reason. Passion and reason are then in competition for the spirit of the bowhunter. Usually, it seems that this is not generaly the case, since their collaboration is common.

Indeed the passion regularly relies on a logical reasoning when it comes to for example, determine the location of a treestand.

However it is well known that the passion distorts the reality in the eyes of the avid bowhunter. Passion blinds the bowhunter on the prospects for success. Passion makes him believe that some signs of the presence of a large mature deer are much better than reality.

Obsessed by the image he is so passionnate about, the bowhunter believes he sees it all the time and reacts at the slightest noise. Time is suddenly suspended, the bowhunter has lost any notion of it.

The passion for bowhunting is therefore an overwhelming emotion towards a temporary happiness, but how much real. It is as if the bowhunter, yielding to his passion to satisfy it, would feed it again and again. The avid bowhunter is so damn embraced in a spiral without end, which the result is crowned by total happiness.

I hope I have treated a few aspects of this affliction that affects us all, at this time of the year.

Deer hunting in 2012

2012-07-10T18:12:00.000-04:00

A pivotal year for deer hunting in Québec

The year 2012 will be a pivotal year for deer hunting in Quebec. Will we see the number of deer hunters (those who buy a license) decline for another year ? Will we see the harvest decline ? Here is the website of the MRNF, where you can find all the information:

http://www.mrnf.gouv.qc.ca/publications/enligne/faune/reglementation-chasse/pdf/chasse-cerf.pdf

The Ministère des ressources naturelles et de la faune recently gave us the deer hunting dates for the next two years.

Here is what the Blog has obtained:

Black Block targets

2012-07-03T16:21:00.000-04:00

If you are a serious deer hunter, you have to practice a lot. In the dozens of targets that I have used over the past 25 years, this one emerges as a winner. This is my last purchase: the Black Block target.

Made of indestructible resin, this target can'' take'' thousands of arrows. In its advertising, it is even said that the target can accept broadheads.

But the greatest innovation of the Black Block is the easier recovery of arrows stuck in the block. I was amazed at how easy we could recover arrows from the Black Block.

Since I do not recommend many products on this blog, because I do not want to tie my hands with sponsors. I can not help but suggest you to get this target.

Breathtaking scenes

Unforgettable scenes

Scouting is a must if you want to have success in the fall. On top of the deer you see in the sunset, sometimes you will have in front of you, some unforgettable scenes. Look carefully in these video scenes as a mother fox has found supper for her family.

Fox

The mother fox with two (2) ground hogs in her mouth, is trying te get through the vegetation line, but return quickly when she sees the cameraman. Meanwhile the deer watch a scene they don't see very often.

Nature unfolds before your eyes if you're outside. Enjoy this video.

Spikes on video

2012-06-08T16:09:00.001-04:00

Scouting is a must

When scouting in the spring for the next bowhunting period, it is not uncommon to find deer. In this case a pregnant doe is still caring for its last year fawns. This video was taken earlier this week.

Did you say spikes

This pregnant doe has a wonderful maternity instinct. The doe is still caring for her last year fawns (spikes).

According to some research made in the US, her spikes will be driven away in a few days. They will move as far as 10 klm (6 miles) and won't see their mother again.

The need for camo clothes

2012-05-29T17:08:00.001-04:00

Camo for the hunter

Camouflage clothes is a must if you are a bowhunter. Camouflage breaks your human silhouette by harmonizing it with the surrounding plants. Note that if you move even with camo clothes, deer will detect you easily.

As a bowhunter you want to get closer to the deer without being detected. Camo clothes will allow you to do that if you move slowly. Your chances of success are greatly enhanced if you wear a camo suit and if you move as little as possible.

Which camo should you choose

Deer bowhunting in Québec begins in mid-september while green leaves are still predominant. You must choose a camo suit whose colors are easily matched with the color of the surrounding vegetation.

If you are hunting from a treestand like me, there is no need to pay a high price for quality camo clothes sold by famous brands. Most of my hunting treestands are at 7 meters (20 ft) high. Camo clothes, Realtree or Mossy Oak pattern, bought at Walmart will do the job.

Make sure that all your camo clothes are waterproof. Last year I bought a leafy camo outfit. I wear it mostly on top of the Walmart outfit. It does blend very well with the september vegetation in Québec.

On the other hand in you hunt from a ground blind, the need for camo clothes is much less necessary.

Gloves, facemask and boots

I have been hunting for the last 25 years with green rubber boots. Since this material does not retain odors, they are essential if you do not want to leave scents on the groung close to your treestand. You must look for confort first if you plan to hunt late in the season.

Your hands and head are the parts of your body that move the most. Make sure these parts are covered with camo gloves and a face mask.

Make sure you are confortable with your camo clothes and accessories. Ideally you should practice your shots with all your gear on.

Spring scouting

Interesting find

What a wonderful moment when a hunter find a deer antler. Look at this picture of a deer antler found this last friday.

Yes it looks good for the next hunting season in fall 2012. If the deer had eight points last year, one can reasonably assume that it should be better one year after.

Fellow bowhunting

Here is a picture of my brother-fellow bowhunting which made the discovery.

As he said, the 2012 hunting season has officially started in our mind.

Deer dealing with fences

2012-05-21T12:35:00.004-04:00

Under the fence

In our spring scoutings, we as bowhunters have often seen deer tracks such as these. Deer can go through fences if they can find a way.

In this particular case the deer went under the fence. The gap under the fence is 30 cm (12 inches) wide.

As you can see these are the tracks the deer left behind on this side of the fence. If you look carefully at the pirst picture, you will see the tracks the deer left in the fine gravel on the other side.

Hunting : no discount for seniors

2012-05-16T14:07:00.000-04:00

Seniors are the biggest losers

Cinema, several government agencies and some large stores offer substantial discounts for seniors. A few of these reductions are the result of efforts made by the FADOQ (Fédération de l'âge d'or du Québec).

In coming years, given the facts that baby boomers will reach the retirement age, we will see those discounts multiply.

Cinemas et museums

Most Québec theaters offer economical entrance rates for seniors. These discounts are generally applicable to seniors of 65 and over. The discount varies between $6.50 to $7.00.

The National Museum of Fine Arts of Québec reduced its entry price to $12.00 for seniors. The Museum of Fine Arts of Montréal has reduced the entry price of 50% to $7.50 for seniors.

Chain stores and drugstores

Sears offers a booklet of discounts to its senior customers. Zellers is offering a 10% discount and The Bay offers a 15% discount certain days of the month.

Most drugstores chains are offering their senior customers a 10% discount on their purchases. Even McDonald's offers a discount to seniors.

Government services

People aged 65 and over are entitled to a free annual eye exam. Ambulance transport is free for seniors. The annual vaccine for influenza is also free for seniors.

If you are interested here's a site : http://www.aines.info/rabais_pour_aines.htm.

As can be seen, some agencies and companies are already taking advantage of the aging population. As the trend is heavy, we will see in the coming years more companies and more government agencies will offer discounts to senior customers.

No discount for seniors

In one of my previous article, I noticed that seniors are entitled to a reduction on their fishing license. For seniors the fishing license is only $16.18 compared to the regular price of $20.41.

Here are the rates for the hunting licenses in Québec. There is no discount for seniors.

There seems to be a blatant discrimination by the MRNF on this topic. I hope that in the coming years the Minister will make tne necessary adjustments.

Plants to avoid this summer in Québec

2012-05-15T12:51:00.002-04:00

A deer hunter is the first to walk in the forest to prepare its fall hunt. Deer hunting is generally prepared early in the summer. There are plants that hunters should beware.

Giant hogweed

When this plant is handled, there is a risk to contact with the sap that contains a toxin that can cause severe burns. The skin becomes red and fluid-filled blisters appear. Although it is not present in large number in Québec, you still have to know it exists.

After wound healing, brown spots appear at the location of the burn. Areas of affected skin may remain sensitive to the sun for several weeks.

Poison Ivy

The sap of poison ivy contains an allergen that causes inflammation of the skin. This oily allergen is released when the plant is damaged. Symptoms appear after 24 hours of contact with the plant.

The first signs of infection are redness on the skin accompanied by intense itching. The swelling and blistering of the skin appear some 24 hour after.

There are several toxic plants in Québec. But they are toxics only if you ingest the fruits of these plants.

I invite you to pay attention to these plants during your deer hunting activities.à
