Humpback Whales in Kauai

Here is a video that Ashley and I took on one of hikes in Kauai, at the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge. During the winter months in Kauai humpback Whales inhabit the waters off the island. (They are most abundant in the waters around Kauai, Lanai, Maui, and Molokai). We literally saw approximately 50 different humpback whales on our trip and got many pictures of whales all over the island.

The Whales migrate to Hawaii to mate, give birth and care for their young. Adults usually range from 42 - 45 feet and weigh approximately 35 - 40 tons. As you can see in the video above and in the pictures below you can see the whales blow, head slap, tail slap and fluke up dive. If you visit Hawaii during this time of the year make sure you take a catamaran ride or bring your camera to the beach as you are almost guaranteed to see whales either way. Some of the pictures below are from some of our other hikes, our hotel balcony, or the catamaran ride we took.

Back from Kauai

Well, Ashley and I have returned from our Honeymoon to Kauai and we have a number of hikes to post as well as a couple of product reviews. We also will be responding to readers emails soon as well. Here are a couple of pictures from some of our hikes on the Island of Kauai in the meantime.

Endangered Gray Wolf Wanders into California

For those wildlife enthusiast, we thought you might want to know that the Gray Wolf has returned to California. The above picture is of one of the Gray Wolves we saw on one of our Yellowstone National Park trips. Here is the post from KTLA's Website:

SISKIYOU COUNTY, Calif. (KTLA) -- Wildlife biologists say a gray wolf that was wandering in southern Oregon has crossed into California.

Officials say the animal is a 2-1/2 year old male formerly from a pack in northeast Oregon. The wolf, designated OR7, is collared with a Global Positioning System (GPS) device that periodically transmits its location. Biologists have been documenting its travels since February 2011. Based on the GPS data, the wolf is now more than 300 miles from where his journey began. Thursday, the California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) learned that OR7 crossed the state line into northern Siskiyou County on Wednesday. Tracking data puts his most recent location as a few miles south of the Oregon border.

Wildlife officials say it's not possible to predict where the wolf will go next; he could return to Oregon. In California, the gray wolf is protected as endangered under the Federal Endangered Species Act. "Whether one is for it or against it, the entry of this lone wolf into California is an historic event and result of much work by the wildlife agencies in the West," said DFG Director Charlton H. Bonham. "If the gray wolf does establish a population in California, there will be much more work to do here."

The last confirmed wild gray wolf in California was killed in Lassen County in 1924.

January 7 – Limestone Canyon Wilderness Access Day

Trail lovers, this one is for you! Enjoy self-guided access in magnificent Limestone Canyon. Designated trails will be open for self-guided hiking, biking, and equestrian use from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Parking is limited, however, and later attendees may be turned away from the event. Carpooling is strongly encouraged. Trail routes vary in distance and level of difficulty. Please plan accordingly. Choices range from easy one-hour walks to strenuous 15-mile cardio hikes. Visiting “The Sinks” is a 9-mile round trip hike over moderate terrain. The new Shoestring Trail Loop is approximately 5 miles long, and includes some steep elevation gain. Together, we will investigate the dynamics of our wildlife in this urban setting with focus on endangered and threatened species. 2011 Year in Review

2011 has been a great year for Brian and Ashley's Hiking Blog. Readership continues to grow as people find the hiking resources we offer. Additionally, we made a couple of minor remodels of the blog this year to support the growth of the blog. One of the neat things about 2011 was that we had the opportunity to do several guests post on other blogs. This year has been a great year for hiking new trails as we have added over 30 new hiking trails to our blog. We now have over 95 different hiking trails that are detailed on Brian and Ashley's Hiking Blog. The number of fans who like our Facebook page has steadily continued to grow, with now over 300 likes. In late 2011 we also joined the realm of Twitter and now have over 40 subscribers.

The biggest thing Ashley and I enjoy are all the comments/feedback that we get from our readers about the hikes that they have done. Your comments, stories, and feedback continue to make this blog better and is always welcome!

Ashley and I want to say a special thanks to all our readers and we hope that 2012 is a great hiking year for you and that you have a Happy New Year! We know that 2012 is going to be a great year for us as we begin the new year with our upcoming wedding on January 7. Sorry for the lack of posts over the last several weeks. Posts will continue to be light through the month of January as our wedding is fast approaching!

Mt. Islip (San Gabriel Mountains)

One of the places that Ashley and I had the chance to visit recently was Mt. Islip in the Angeles National Forest. This is a fun hike to the peak of Mt. Islip (8,250 feet), one of the peaks in the High San Gabriel's. When we did this hike it was during the late fall and there was already snow above the 6,000 foot level. This is a fun hike with amazing views. You can use this hike to train for other longer hikes at elevation as well. For more pictures make sure to check out our Facebook Page.

Directions to Trailhead: The parking area of the Mt. Islip trailhead is located at the Islip Saddle. From the 210 in La Canada Flintridge take the Angeles Crest Highway (Highway 2) roughly 40 miles to the Islip Saddle. You will need to display a Forest Adventure Pass to park here. Alternately you can also come up from the Wrightwood side of the Angeles Crest Highway. There is a good amount of parking at the Islip Saddle. Vaulted Restrooms are available here. This is a popular area and during most of the year you will find cars parked here at this trailhead. The trail, for the hike to Mt. Islip, is across the street from the parking area by the entrance to the parking area. If you are driving here during the winter time make sure to check the weather and road conditions. The Angeles Crest Highway is known to shut down during inclimate weather and you might need chains during the winter months. A Forest Adventure Pass is required to park at the trailhead.

Description of Hike: The hike to the summit of Mt. Islip is roughly 7 miles roundtrip with an elevation gain of 1,590 feet. The trail is well maintained as it is a popular trail because much of the hike you are utilizing the Pacific Crest Trail. You are rewarded with great views of the dessert the majority of the way up the trail and even better views once you get close to the summit. The majority of the hike is along the Pacific Crest Trail. You are going to follow the pacific crest trail all the way through Little Jimmy Campground. You also have an alternate option at about a mile from the trailhead. At this point the Pacific Crest Trail crosses a dirt service road that also goes to Little Jimmy Campground. The Pacific Crest Trail is a more scenic option to take to Little Jimmy Campground. The only time the trail is a little difficult to follow is when you go through the campground. Once you find the trail on the other side of the campground you continue on the Pacific Crest Trail and then split off onto the Mt. Islip Trail. All trail splits are usually well marked and easy to follow. From this junction you have just under a mile to the top of Mt. Islip where you are rewarded with amazing vistas. Return to the trailhead via the same route. The total hike is roughly 7 miles roundtrip and has about 1,590 feet of elevation gain.

Further Thoughts: Ashley and I really enjoyed this hike because we got the chance to do some snow hiking. The trail had about 1 - 2 feet of snow along the majority of the trail. We had the chance to utilize our crampons and our winter gear that kept us warm on the hike. The temperatures were in the 30's for much of the hike with a steady breeze. If you are hiking here during the winter months when snow is present make sure you have the proper winter hiking gear. If you are looking for good gear Columbia is a great brand. The trails at this elevation are typically snow-free May through November. This is a very popular trail for much of the year and you are likely to see hikers on the trail and at Little Jimmy Campground.

The Little Jimmy Campground honors the early 20th century newspaper cartoonist Jimmy Swinnerton who was the creator of the Little Jimmy Comic Strip. Mr. Swinnerton spent much of the summer of 1909 at this pleasant camp, which was remote and isolated at that time. If you are looking to make a backpacking trip out of this hike, this is a great location to camp.

On the summit of Mt. Islip you will discover the shell of an old stone cabin and the footings of a fire lookout tower that stood on the summit of Mt. Islip from 1927 to 1937. It is always neat to see a piece of history while on a hike. The summit offers a 360 degree view of the surrounding area. You can see the Pacific Ocean Downtown Los Angeles, Saddleback Mountain, Mt. San Jacinto, and much more on a clear day from Mt. Islip. Ashley and I both loved this hike and would highly recommend it to those looking to make it to the summit of a major peak in the San Gabriel Mountains.

Rating: Elevation Gain: 1,590 ft. (Moderate), Distance: 7 Miles Roundtrip (Moderate).

Time to Complete Hike: 4 - 5 hours.

Riley Wilderness Park Events

Here, are some upcoming events at Riley Wilderness Park that you might want to put on your Calendar. Riley Wilderness Park is one of Ashley and I's favorite hiking locations in Orange County. The Wagon Wheel Natural History Association is putting on the following events:

Sunset Evening Hikes: December 10 at 3:30pm; January 14 at 4:00pm; and February 11 at 4:30pm. Make sure to wear good sturdy shoes with traction.

Birding Walks: They are also starting new Birding Walks at Riley Wilderness Park. The first one begins January 4, 2012 and will be from 8:00am. to 11:00am and will be lead by Mike Clayton. All levels of birders are welcome to come and explore the abundant bird life in Riley Wilderness Park. Make sure to wear good sturdy shoes with traction.

December 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 15 - 23 – Irvine Park Railroad’s 16^th Annual Christmas Train

Times vary.

It’s the season, once again for Irvine Park Railroad’s annual Christmas Train. Come with family and friends and take this enchanting night ride through historic Irvine Regional Park to meet Santa Claus. The train will depart from the brightly-lit train station and drop you off at Santa’s Village. While waiting to meet Santa, you may purchase coffee, hot chocolate, freshly-popped popcorn and cookies from our Elf House Snack Bar to warm you up. A full kitchen menu is also available at the Train Station. Visitors may take their own pictures with Santa or you may purchase a picture taken by Irvine Park Railroad. Each 5” x 7” photo will be presented with an Irvine Park Railroad border and available for pickup shortly after being taken. After visiting with Santa, hop back aboard the train and enjoy the colorful Christmas lights and decorations, as well as the magical “Tunnel of Lights”, on the ride back to the station house. When visiting the Christmas Train, remember to dress warmly, bring your camera and film, and arrive early to avoid crowds.

Discover the geology of Laguna Coast and how rocks and fossils reveal ancient stories about the dramatic changes in the park’s environment. We’ll examine a cave, several faults, sandstones from the Topanga and Vaqueros Formations, laminations in the sandstone, fossil scallops, modern & prehistoric landslides, and huge lava-filled fissures (or dikes) radiating across the landscape. Talbert Nature Preserve (Costa Mesa)

One of the places Ashley and I had the chance to visit recently was the Talbert Nature Preserve located in Costa Mesa, California. The (South) Talbert Nature Preserve is approximately 88.5 acres large and is a good coastal hiking location. For those looking for a true wilderness feel this may not be the hike for you because of the proximity of homes. Directions to Trailhead: To get to the trailhead, take the 55 freeway heading toward the beach. Once you exit at the end of the 55 freeway, head west (right) on 19th St. Go approximately 1 mile and make a right onto Monrovia followed by a quick left onto Arbor. After this turn, the park entrance is just ahead on your right. Drive to the lower parking area where there a number of parking spaces. Parking at the Canyon Community Park is free and the park is open dusk to dawn 7 days a week. The Talbert Nature Preserve is free to enter and is open from 7am to Dusk 7 days a week.

Description of Hike: The Talbert Nature Preserve is well maintained by the people at OC Parks. There is minimal elevation gain with any trail you hike at the Talbert Nature Preserve. Also it is important to remember that this area has the potential to flood/stay wet after an extended period of rain because it is a low lying area. From the trailhead at the parking lot of Canyon Community Park, we took the paved path all the way to the Talbert Nature Preserve. Most of the trails at the Talbert Nature Preserve are marked with trail markers. There were no maps available when we went, which means it is a good idea to print a trail map before you hike in this area. A trail map of the park can be found Here. From the pathway entrance we made a right onto the A Trail, a left on the B Trail, a right on the C Trail. The C Trail eventually became the D Trail. We followed the D Trail and made a left on the B Trail and then a right onto the E Trail. The E trail ran into the D Trail where we made a left and returned back to our point of entry. Note, be on the watch out for bicyclists as there is a designated BMX bike area in the Talbert Nature Preserve. We saw several people riding their bikes in the BMX area. Our total hike was 2.2 miles with less than 100 feet of elevation gain.

Further Thoughts: Ashley and I enjoyed our hike in the Talbert Nature Preserve. It is one of the few open space areas in Central Orange County. There were not very many people on the trails when we hiked here, as the trails were still a little muddy from a recent storm. The trails in the park as a whole were well maintained. When you hike here, be on the watch for bicyclists as the designated BMX area is popular. Much of the Talbert Nature Preserve's habitat is being restored, as indicated by signs and temporary orange fencing. It is great to see the restoration and the park will look better when the habitat restoration is complete because the orange fencing will be taken down.

The park is divided into six separate plant groups, identified as "zones" and based upon the progression of plant groups and changing conditions found along the Santa Ana River. The first zone is designated "Intensive Use Area" and the plant material has been selected based on use instead of its origins on the site. The second zone, a "Border Planting" zone is planted with vegetation designed to maintain boundaries and screen the embankment of the Greenville-Banning Channel. Another zone, the "Coastal Strand" consists of gentle slopes and dunes, a habitat largely destroyed by the advance of civilization in the area. The "Native Grassland" zone is the largest zone in the park and provides opportunities for wildlife habitats. An "Alluvial Woodland" zone contains a wide variety of plant and animal life and is the most secluded area in the park. Finally, the "Wetland Zone" consists of the southern 14.8 acres of the park and contains elements of riparian woodland and mulefat scrub.

Ashley and I enjoyed our hike here. If you are looking for a true secluded wilderness feel, this hike is probably not for you. The only down side of the park was that there was a fair amount of litter on a couple of the trails. When you go hiking here, bring a bag and help pick up some of the trash that others carelessly leave behind.

Rating: Elevation Gain: < 100 ft. (Easy), Distance: 2.2 Miles Roundtrip (Easy).

Time to Complete Hike: 1 - 1.5 hours.

One of the places that Ashley and I had the chance to visit was Canyon Community Park located in Costa Mesa, California. The park is roughly 35 acres large and contains a number of trails that are perfect for the whole family. If you are looking for a true wilderness hike this is probably not the hike for you as it is near homes, which is why were are classifying it as an Urban Hike. Directions to Trailhead: To get to the trailhead, take the 55 freeway heading toward the beach. Description of Hike: The trails in Canyon Community park are well maintained by the city of Costa Mesa. The park is 35 acres large and contains a number of formal and informal trails. There are really two main hikes in Canyon Community Park in Costa Mesa, the Pond Loop and the Canyon Loop. There are no formal trail markers or maps at Canyon Community Park. For the Pond Loop, from the parking area follow the paved trail though the park, passed the bluffs, and to the lower section of Canyon Community Park. Once you get to the lower section of the park there is a bridge the trail passes over. Behind the bridge is a small pond. At the pond you will notice a formal and informal trail, these are the trails that make up the Pond Loop. Once you have completed the Pond Loop return to the parking area via the paved path. The Pond Loop is roughly 0.5 miles roundtrip with minimal elevation gain/loss. Unfortunately, there are no formal trail markers on the trails at Canyon Community Park which can make it a little difficult to navigate.

For the Canyon Loop, from the parking area, follow the paved path and crossover the canyon. Make your first right onto the dirt trail and head up the canyon to the upper section of Canyon Community Park. On your way up the canyon you will see a number of informal trails that crisscross the canyon. You can use these informal trails to explore than canyon area as it is normally dry, except during the rainy season. Continue following the main trail all the way up the canyon until it makes a loop near several homes at the upper end of the canyon. Follow the trail around on the opposite side of the canyon and it will lead you back to the parking area. The total distance for this loop is 0.7 miles roundtrip with minimal elevation gain/loss. Both loops can easily be done together. For a longer hike, with a more secluded wilderness feel, you can also hike to the nearby Talbert Nature Preserve. Our write-up for that hike can be found Here. Further Thoughts: Ashley and I enjoyed our hike in Canyon Community Park in Costa Mesa. We did this hike in conjunction with our hike at the Talbert Nature Preserve. There were a lot of people using the park when we went hiking here as it is popular with locals living near the park. This is a great hike for those with smaller kids, because the trails are well maintained and it is not to long. You also have a chance to see wildlife when you hike here, as we saw two red tailed hawks while at the park. Even though this is a small park, it packs a punch and is a hike the whole family can enjoy. Best of all you can make this hike longer and get more of a wilderness feel by accessing the Talbert nature Preserve through the trails in Canyon Community Park. There were only two negatives to the hike; the homes close to the trails and the lack of a trail map/trail names. Hopefully, in the future, the City of Costa Mesa will create a formal trail map with trail names for the different trails at Canyon Community Park.

San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary (South Loop)

Ashley and I recently had another visit to the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary in Irvine. The San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary is a totally different hiking location than most places in Southern California as it is mostly a riparian or marsh habitat. The San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary is a great 300 acre preserve that is connected with the larger Newport back bay ecosystem. For more pictures make sure to check out our Facebook Page.

Directions to Trailhead: A Google map of the area is blow at the end of the post. The San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Irvine. There are several entrances to the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary. To get to the trailhead for the South Loop Trail, exit at Culver and go towards UC-Irvine. Follow Culver for a mile or two and make a right onto University. Follow University for a mile or two and make a right onto Campus. Just after your make the right onto Campus, make an immediate right onto Riparian View Road. The trailhead is at your first left. Note, there are several other entrances to the wildlife sanctuary from the surrounding area, but this is the one for the South Loop. One of the best things about the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary is that it is free to the public and is open from dusk until dawn 7 days a week.

Description of Hike: The San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary is a 300 plus acre nature preserve. There are over 11 miles of trails in the park. The trails are virtually flat as it is a wetland sanctuary. There are trail maps located at the entrances to the park. If you would like to print out a map before you go, here is a link to one. You can make your hike in the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary as long or a short as you want. There is minimal elevation gain on any trail that you choose to take. Even though the park is close to some of the tall buildings found in the urban core of Irvine, the park still has that wild secluded feel to it. While hiking here, you will be able to see plenty of wildlife while out on the trails. The South Loop Trail is a 1.4 mile loop that goes through the Southern Portion of the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary. There is minimal elevation gain and it offers great scenery and a chance to see wildlife. The trail loops around many of the lakes located at the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary and is a great place to see the wide diversity of birds that use this wildlife sanctuary. The total hike from the parking area plus the North Loop is 1.6 miles roundtrip.

Further Thoughts: Ashley and I have always loved our hikes at the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary. For such a popular area you have an excellent chance to view wildlife so close to the urban core of Orange County. Usually, you will see people out with big cameras and telephoto lenses taking pictures of the birds that use the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary.

The wetlands at the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary naturally clean urban runoff from the nearby San Diego Creek. After interacting with the bulrush and other plants at the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary for seven to ten days, up to 70 percent of the nitrogen that was in the water is naturally removed. The cleaner water is returned to the creek to continue its journey to Upper Newport Bay and the ocean. The San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary is a natural filtration system for the San Diego Creek.

One of the great things about the South Loop is that it goes around the larger lakes at the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary. This makes for some scenic pictures. Additionally, at the parking area is the Sea and Sage Audubon House. They offer several interpretive trails which are very educational. Also, inside the building is a wide selection of materials including a reference library, a fully equipped nature shop, and some taxidermied birds. Ashley and I enjoyed our hike on the South Loop of the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary and it is a perfect hike for the whole family to do together.

Below is our reviews on the Different Products:

KIWI Camp Dry Heavy Duty Water Repellent: Ashley and I have used Kiwi Camp Dry Heavy Duty Water Repellent on several occasions. We regularly use this product if we need a way to make our regular hiking shoes water proof for a hike. This is a product that works and is a cheap temporary way to provide needed water protection on a hike. One notable hike I used this product on was Mt. Whitney. At the time I was looking for an option to make my hiking shoes water repellent. Because of the wet year we had in the 2010 California rainy season, there was still plenty of melting snow on Mt. Whitney, to the point where we used ice axes on certain sections of our hike. I followed the directions on applying the Heavy Duty Water Repellent and the product performed great while hiking on Mt. Whitney. My hiking shoes repelled water, as advertised. One negative to this product is there is a smell with the initial spray, which usually goes away within a day, possibly a little more. When using the product, make sure to apply it a day or so before your hiking trip. Once the product drys out, there is no odor. The silicone bonds to the leather/fabric of your hiking boot to create an extremely tough water barrier, while still allowing the article to breath. The package says you could spray this on articles of select types of outdoor clothing, however, I have not done that and don't necessarily feel comfortable doing so. This is, however, a great affordable product to make your hiking boots temporarily water proof.

KIWI Camp Dry Performance Fabric Protector: Ashley and I have used this on our tent on several occasions when backpacking. We have also used it on our shoes as well. This is a non-silicone polymer and does not have the same initial odor problems as the Heavy Duty Water Repellent. There is no odor with this product and it is not silicone based like the previous product, and thus it has more applications. It did a good job of repelling water from getting inside the tent. The product also can be used on other apparel such as jackets, pants and performance gear. It did not discolor the clothing we tested it on. In reality the only use that I see Ashley and I using this product is on our shoes, our tent to protect from outside moisture, and our backpacks. This is another great affordable product that makes fabrics and other materials temporarily waterproof.

KIWI Saddle Soap: This is a hiking shoe cleaning product that is perfect for those of you that have leather based shoes. It took my Merrills from dusty and worn looking to new in a couple of minutes of cleaning. I followed the instructions on the container and applied the Saddle Soap with a damp cloth to clean the shoes. With relativity little effort my hiking boots were looking like they once did. Best of all the Saddle Soap will help protect your shoes from the elements. Applying the Saddle Soap is a similar to applying shoe polish. This product works and we definitely recommend it to others.

KIWI Outdoor Laces: Who doesn't need a backup pair of shoe laces. Neither Ashley or I took out the laces of our hiking shoes to test this product out, but we did pull the laces out of the packaging to get a look at them. They appear well made and will work well with your hiking shoes. Both Ashley and I have used KIWI replacement laces on other athletic and dress shoes in the past and they have always performed well. From our experience, KIWI makes great shoe care products that protect your shoes and increases their lifespan.

Here are some upcoming holiday events, put on by the people at OC Parks.

Spend the holidays experiencing the outdoor winter wonder of OC Parks. This season presents a full calendar of festive events and programs for families to enjoy together. Join OC Parks and OC Public Libraries on November 28 for the inaugural Holiday Tree Lighting at Irvine Ranch Historic Park, home to the Katie Wheeler Library. The event will feature Orange County Board of Supervisors Chairman Bill Campbell, Third District, holiday performances, music and refreshments, and a special appearance by Santa Claus in a beautiful, historic setting. Complimentary festivities will culminate with the lighting of the large redwood tree adjacent to the library.

On December 3, Heritage Hill Historical Park in Lake Forest welcomes the 30th Annual Victorian Christmas. Experience the traditions of the holiday season at Heritage Hill Historical Park. The park’s historic buildings will be festively decorated for Christmas. There will be musical performers, local craft vendors, and food for purchase. Families and friends will also enjoy fun, hands-on activities including butter churning, candle dipping, Victorian-inspired crafts, and cookie decorating with Mrs. Claus. Come celebrate with us as herald trumpeters open the event in honor of its 30th anniversary! Also at Heritage Hill Historical Park, the Candlelight Tour returns on Saturday, December 10 and Sunday,December 11. Annually, the park transforms into an extravagant celebration with 1,000 luminarias lighting the buildings, illuminating the pathways and shining on the park grounds. Holiday carolers, local musicians, storytellers and flamenco dancers provide seasonal entertainment throughout the evening. Visit Santa and enjoy warm cider, cocoa and homemade confections.

On Saturday, December 17, celebrate the holidays with the animals of the OC Zoo! Christmas at the Zoowelcomes all to story time with Mrs. Claus, a visit with Santa, seasonally inspired crafts and holiday face painting. Children can watch the zoo animals receive treats hidden inside Christmas Trees! While enjoying Christmas at the OC Zoo, take a ride on Irvine Park Railroad’s annual Christmas Train through Irvine Regional Park, running December 2-4,9-11 and 15-23! The holidays are just beginning. Bundle up, gather the family and ring in the winter season with OC Parks!

San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary (North Loop)

One of the places that Ashley and I recently visited was the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary in Irvine. The San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary is a totally different hiking location than most places in Southern California as it is mostly a riparian or marsh habitat. The San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary is a great 300 acre preserve that is connected with the larger Newport back bay ecosystem. For more pictures make sure to check out our Facebook Page.

Directions to Trailhead: A Google map of the area is blow at the end of the post. The San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Irvine. There are several entrances to the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary. To get to the trailhead for the North Loop, exit the 405 freeway at Jamboree Road and head toward Newport Beach. Make a left onto Michelson Drive and follow for about a mile until you hit Riparian View which is right before the San Diego Creek. Make a right onto Riparian View and parking is ahead shortly on your right. These directions are to the main entrance of the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary. There are several other entrances to the wildlife sanctuary from the surrounding area. One of the best things about the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary is that it is free to the public and is open from dusk until dawn 7 days a week.

Description of Hike: The San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary is a 300 plus acre nature preserve. There are over 11 miles of trails in the park. The trails are virtually flat as it is a wetland sanctuary. There are trail maps located at the entrances to the park. If you would like to print out a map before you go, here is a link to one. You can make your hike in the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary as long or a short as you want. There is minimal elevation gain on any trail that you choose to take. Even though the park is close to some of the tall buildings found in the urban core of Irvine, the park still has that wild secluded feel to it. While hiking here, you will be able to see plenty of wildlife while out on the trails. The North Loop Trail is a 1.2 mile loop that goes through the Northern/Eastern Portion of the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary. There is minimal elevation gain and it offers great scenery and a chance to see wildlife. The total hike from the parking area plus the North Loop is 1.5 miles roundtrip.

Further Thoughts: Ashley and I really enjoyed this hike. When hiking in the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary you are likely to see other people out enjoy the trails. Make sure to bring your camera with you as you never know what type of wildlife you will see when visiting here. Depending on the time of year you will also see a lot of wildlife enthusiast taking pictures of all the migratory birds that use the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary.

The wetlands at the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary naturally clean the urban runoff from the San Diego Creek. After interacting with the bulrush and other plants in the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary for seven to ten days, up to 70 percent of the nitrogen that was in the water is naturally removed. The cleaner water is returned to the creek to continue its journey to Upper Newport Bay and the ocean. The San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary is a natural filtration system for the San Diego Creek.

Rating: Elevation Gain: Minimal (Easy), Distance: 1.5 Miles Roundtrip (Easy).

Time to Complete Hike: 30 minutes - 45 minutes.

Salt Creek Trail (Laguna Niguel)

Recently, we had the opportunity to explore the Salt Creek Trail. The Salt Creek Trail is popular with locals and you will see hikers, joggers, and people riding their bikes when you are on this trail. The trail crosses the City of Dana Point, the City of Laguna Niguel and four parks: Chapparosa Community Park and Salt Creek Regional Park in the Salt Creek Canyon and Crown Valley Community Park and Laguna Niguel Regional Park in the Sulphur Creek Canyon. This is more of an urban hike that follows two large coastal canyons down to the beach. It goes through a semi-wilderness area surrounded by homes and is the perfect hike to do after a rain storm or midweek after work. For more pictures check out our Facebook Page.

Directions to Trailhead: There is not one trailhead used to access the Salt Creek Trail, there are multiple trailheads. The furthermost trailhead is the parking lot for the Laguna Niguel Dog Park. To reach this location from the Interstate 5 freeway, exit at Crown Valley and head toward the beach, away from Mission Viejo. Continue a couple of miles and make a left onto Golden Lantern. In a couple of miles the Dog Park will be on your right. If you pass Beacon Hill Way you have gone to far. For a map click Here. No cost for parking.

Additionally, another trailhead option is Chapparosa Community Park, which is located just down the trail from the Laguna Niguel Dog Park. To reach this location from the Interstate 5 freeway, exit at Crown Valley and head toward the beach, away from Mission Viejo. Continue a couple of miles and make a left onto Golden Lantern. In a couple of miles you will make a right onto Chapparosa Park Road. You will dead end into the park. For a map click Here. No cost for parking.

Another trailhead option in the middle of the Salt Creek Trail system is the shopping center on Niguel Road. To reach this location from the Interstate 5 freeway, exit at Crown Valley and head toward the beach, away from Mission Viejo. Continue for several miles and make a left onto Niguel Road. You will head up a hill and then down a hill and the shopping center is located by the light at clubhouse drive. No cost for parking.

Lastly, another option is to start at Salt Creek Beach. Salt Creek Beach Park is located in Southern Orange County between the communities of South Laguna and Dana Point. The park entrance is located at Pacific Coast Highway & Ritz Carlton Drive, approximately four miles north of the San Diego freeway. This parking area is open daily from 5:00a.m. - 12:00 midnight. There is a cost for parking $1/hour year round.

Additionally, there are many side trails that connect to adjacent communities along the trail, so if you live near the Salt Creek Trail you might have a trailhead very close to your home!

Description of Hike: The salt creek trail is an urban hike that goes through a semi-wilderness areas in the City of Laguna Niguel and the City of Dana Point. The trail system is well maintained and the majority of the trail is paved. There are several sections where you have the option to travel on dirt/gravel trail away from paved trail (Between the Laguna Niguel Dog Park and Chapparosa Community Park), however most of the trail is paved with (at times) a dirt trail next to it. From the Laguna Niguel Dog Park to Salt Creek Beach it is approximately 4.75 miles on the dirt trail and just over 5 miles on the paved trail one way. Roundtrip you are look at 9.5 to 10 miles for the whole trail system marked in blue on the Google Map Below. Total elevation gain/loss for the trail is approximately 400 feet.

There are more trails to this system, marked in Yellow on the Google Map below, but we are considering them community access points for the residents near the bulk of the semi-wilderness area and have not included these in our mileage calculations. From the Dog Park to the Shopping Center at Niguel Road it is approximately 1.85 miles one way on the dirt trail and just over 2 miles one way on the paved trail. From the Shopping Center at Niguel Road to Camino Del Avion it is approximately 1.13 miles one way. And from Camino Del Avion to the Salt Creek Beach Parking area it is approximately 1.62 miles one way. For a map of the entire trail system click Here. The nice thing about this trail system is you can choose to do one long hike or can tailor into a shorter hike.

Further Thoughts: Ashley and I really enjoyed this hike, even though it was not in a true wilderness setting. It is a great hike when you don't have enough time to get away to a true wilderness area and it is a great mid-week hiking option for those that live near the trail and are looking for a place to go after work. Additionally, since the trail is paved, it is open even after a good rain storm when other county parks are closed due to muddy conditions.

Many areas along the Salt Creek Trail offer scenic vistas of the canyons the trail meanders through. Eventually you get far enough down the canyons where you can see the ocean. We did not hike the entire trail system, but hiked from the Laguna Niguel Dog Park to just past the shopping center at Niguel Road. The total hike was roughly 5 miles in length with 200 feet of elevation gain/loss. We observed many people out on the trail, from joggers to hikers to road bikers. You will likely see other people while out on this trail. Additionally, you might have the chance to see some wildlife in this area as it is a semi-wilderness area, so make sure to bring your camera.

Ashley and I enjoyed this trail, but if you are looking for a true wilderness feel then this is not the trail for you.

Time to Complete Hike: Varies depending on segment length. For the whole trail out and back 4 - 6 hours.

It allows you to easily share with your friends and family what routs you have taken. It is technology that allows you to accurately document and share your hikes. Our Review: Ashley and I really enjoyed the Sony Ericsson's XP-111 Fitness Experience Pack. Once the packaged arrived we opened it and began setting everything up. We started by learning how to use the Xperia X10 Mini Pro Smart Phonephone and then the XP-111 Fitness Experience Pack. Both electronic devises were easy to set up and easy to use. The bottom-line is the instructions to set everything up were pretty straightforward, just make sure you follow them and you should be up and running in no time.

Note, when downloading the SportyPal Pro App from the android market (This is what is used to track your hikes/workouts), as well as sharing your hikes and workouts via your phone, normal data rates apply. We both assume that people who are using Apps like these have a pretty good data plan. By purchasing the Sony Ericsson XP-111 Fitness Experince Pack you get a 1 year subscription to the SportyPal Pro App. Once the setup was all done we were set to test the product out on one of our hikes.

We tested the product out on a hike in Riley Wilderness Park, one of our favorite local hiking spots. There is an arm band that the Fitness Experience Pack comes with, which is not bulky and is lightweight. But as a hiker, you can also attach everything to your backpack if you like. The whole product was very cool and it allowed us to track our progress and to analyze the statistics of our hike. Furthermore, you have the option to share your hikes/workouts via Facebook and Twitter with your friends and family.

One of the coolest things about the XP-111 is that the LiveView display can control your phone and let you know that you have new text messages, emails, and Facebook and Twitter updates. We did not use these functions, but I can see how they can come in handy. This is truly a versatile product and Ashley and I were very happy with the way the Xperia X10 Mini Pro Phone and the XP-111 Fitness Experience Pack worked. The XP-111 is a great tool to be able to document and share your hikes! Good Job Sony Ericsson and we look forward to using it on longer hikes!

Wild Bald Eagle in Orange County

For those that remember the news stories from last January (Los Angeles Times news article) about the Wild Bald Eagle that was visiting the Captive Bald Eagle at the Orange County Zoo and Irvine Regional Park, it appears that he might be back. The OC Park Facebook Page, shared a picture (Picture above) of the Wild Bald Eagle and news of his return this morning. For those in Orange County and Southern California looking to catch a glimpse of the Wild Bald Eagle, it might be time to take a hike and visit Irvine Regional Park. Last year there were many wildlife enthusiasts visiting the park to see and photograph the Bald Eagle.

Bobcat Pictures

Here, are two pictures of a Bobcat that I saw while hiking at the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary this week. Sorry for the lack of quality pictures, but these pictures were taken with an old cell phone camera. For a link to an informative article we posted on the bobcats of the South Coast Wilderness/San Joaquin hills area click Here (It is worth the read if you have not read it). It is estimated that between 30 and 50 bobcats roam the San Juaquin Hills. This particular Bobcat, probably weighed about 20 - 25 pounds. It is amazing to see that the wildlife corridors that connect the open spaces in our area, appear to work because you can find wildlife very close to the urban core of Orange County.

Come and enjoy a stress-free end to your day on a 3-mile level and moderate hike (100-ft. elevation gain) through riparian landscape and open grassland. Along the way discover evidence of bobcat, coyote and deer through the scat and other signs. Led by Laguna Canyon volunteers.
