Jade Kwan with a Jazzy little number

Here is another cantonese singer. Jade can really sing and is not just a pretty face. Its sometimes hard to find true talent with so many c-pop, j-pop, k-pop being manufactured in the studio. She has come into trouble with her TV contract with TVB and this has put pressure on her and her record company MBA Inc.

Jade has put as much into training her voice as is possible considering the amount of pressure these artists have once on tour. Rather than going straight into a record deal she prepared for one year prior to signing to get her voice ready. This is a sign of dedication and not the usually rush to get a deal before the artist is really ready for that level of fame and work.

Janice Vidal (Wei Lan)

Janice is a singer of Philippine/Korean birth but is now a star in Hongkong. She has a identity problem in name only as you can find her called Janice Vidal, Janice Wei Lan and many combinations.

Your albums are usually in Chinese but there is usually at least one in English.

One her "Do U Know" album there is a Christmas songs medley.

She has a good voice but sometimes the songs just dont suit her voice. I am sure with time she will sort this out.

Thongchai Mcintyre - Thailand

Thongchai McIntyre was born in Bangkok in 1958 to parents James and Udom McIntyre. His father, who was a half-Scottish luk kreung, died when Bird was still a child. He became a singer in his 20s, and since then ruled the Thai Pop music industry until now. Bird is considered the most famous entertainer and singer in Thailand.

If your into quiet ballads then this music maybe for you.

Incase you are wondering, the words on his t-shirt say "Single" :)

Utada Hikaru -Japan/USA

Utada Hikaru was born in the United States to a famous enka singer and a songwriter, who not only made sure that Hikaru inherited their talents, but also that she learned English before returning to Japan. As a child, Hikaru, spent time in recording studios soaking in the music and, at age 10, she began writing her own song lyrics in English. During that time, she was rocking out to bands like Queen and Bon Jovi, but later on got into R&B. By age 12, she had released three singles in the U.S. under the pseudonym, Cubic U.

When she released her first album, "First Love," in Japan, it immediately went to No. 1 on the charts and became the most popular debut album ever released in Japan, selling eight million copies. Utada is currently living in New York City, and is an undergraduate student at Columbia University.

Mika Nakashima - Japan Jazz/Pop Singer

Its exciting to see young singers take to Jazz especially when they are mainly from the J-Pop, Rock genre. Mika Nakashima is truly a fresh breeze being a pop star and a Jazz singer. Born in 1983 she arrived on the commercial music scene in 2001 after being selected to act in a TV drama. She is probably the most serious female vocalist around her age. Her first hit the same year "Stars" sold over 500,000 copies. Her 2nd d single sold out on the first day. He next 3 singles sold over 100,000 copies each. She released "True" in 2002. Since then she starred in Nana and Nana2, two films. Nana gross over 4 billion yen last year. At 23 this is a truly amazing achievement. He has also charted in South Korea.

Here is another singer from Korea that sings the same song who goes by the name of KANGTA. A good rendition for a singer that probably is not experienced in english as a language. There two places where the vocals seem to go off but as I mentioned this is common in live performances.

I dont often recommend J-Pop (Japanese Pop), K-Pop (Korea Pop)artists as this blog is for GREAT singers, however, this lady is one of those I regard as an expection in that although she is not a GREAT singer, she has broken the cultural barrier and the first artist in Japan to be accepted for what she is (a Korean singer)and is to be admired for your continued stay right at the time of the charts.

The video I have attached here is not a strong one but it does give you a look into her world. She is so hot in Japan and has been since she first debut there on signing in 2001.

BoA's 15th single Do the Motion hit #1 on the Oricon chart, making her only the fifth non-Japanese singer to have a single hit #1 and the first in over 21 years. BoA was awarded "Most Influential Asian Artist" and "Favorite Artist Korea" Prizes at MTV Asia Awards held in Singapore on February, 2004. Her songs are now popular even in Taiwan, PRC and some Southeast Asian countries.

Candyman from South Korea

I recommend this track by the duo called Candyman.

The female singer's name is Chung Ahn. She was recently in the news for reporting she had been mugged and her credit cards and cash were stolen. A smart policeman noticed that the security cameras showed she was alone. She finally confessed.

The korean newspaper Chosun Iibo reported:

"At a press conference Friday, Chung Ahn apologized for the incident saying she was supposed to perform on a live radio show but she felt bad and not in good voice, so she just wanted to escape from the appearance. “I didn’t realize things would escalate like this,” she added. Determined to make the incident seem real, she entered the lavatory in a building in a quiet area, where she hit herself in the face and cut up her clothes with a knife.

The entertainer's agency says not even her parents and her boyfriend knew she made the incident up. “She has been under enormous pressure because two albums of mixed duets she brought out lost money,” the head of her agency said. “But it hasn’t even been one month since she made her solo debut, so I can’t understand why she has done this.” The singer will get a summary trial for filing a false report.

This is a very famous video. The story is basically (from what I can understand) that the refuge arrives and marries to stay in the country. its a hard life. From first sight he loves his wife even thought it is an arranged marriage. Eventually he is licked out of the country. A classic Korean love story.

Eddie - Laid back ballad with R&B flavours

Here is a Korean artist that is making waves overseas and could be called a crossover artist (Foreign and Asian) audiences.

The video is very much of the typical korean sort, a full story in which there are more questions to ask after than before you see it.

I understand that Eddie has only put out one album so far so its very early days for him.

One of Japan's most under-rated singers

I believe that Kiyotaka is one of the finest voices in Japan. Originally signed to Toshiba/EMI this guy has had his ups and downs. Today its hard work for him to continue his career in Japan and perhaps its time for him to turn to an overseas audience. I believe he is one of the few Japanese artists that I have heard that has all of the following: range, power, amazing pitching and voice control and a great presence of stage. Most artists have a combination but not all. On top of this his ability to sing in english.
