Modern Valentine

For this shoot, I wanted to reimagine the traditional colors of Valentine's day in a way that felt modern and more organic. Lavender, coral red, barely blush, camel, and white. We used several motifs that are traditional to the holiday, but in unexpected ways. Flowers were deconstructed and used as earrings and art throughout the shoot. Paper, that could be used to wrap a bouquet of flowers or a gift was hung as an interesting, color blocked backdrop. We added dried flowers to a white chocolate bark, playing on the traditional gift of flowers an chocolates.

How To Host a Beautiful Galentines | Published on Cottage Hill

Last year, my friend Jessica of Jessica's Photography and I hosted a Galentine's luncheon for some of our creative industry friends in Utah. It was such a beautiful winter day, basking in the sun streaming through the windows at Ember SLC, eating delicious foods that Jessica made for us. Especially during the winter months, I find it necessary to connect with other women and feel a sense of shared support and community. So this gathering was the perfect remedy to my winter blues? I brought some of my favorite, delicately scented spring flowers, and Jessica captured every detail beautifully.

Romantic Distillery Wedding

Traci was such a lovely bride to work with, and her wedding was a beautiful depiction of her kind, loving spirit. (Despite the massive wind gusts that came through 10 minutes before the ceremony and almost tore apart the whole ceremony installation. But we were able to save it, so we won't talk about that today...) This couple came to Park City for their mountain wedding because they love the natural environment, and the rustic elegance of this setting. They incorporated a lot of personal family details, including Traci's mom's wedding veil that she wore for the ceremony. The palette was kept subtle with whites and ivories, melting gracefully into yellow, and lots of greenery. We took a less is more approach and designed deconstructed tablescapes of hand dyed silk topped with trailing vines, artichokes, and tons of antique brass candlesticks.

Old Home Love

Recently, we moved to the charming old town of American Fork, Utah. And lucky for us, we have some of the coolest neighbors who make their living off restoring old houses, which is a huge passion of mine. Any and Candis of Old Home Love also has a beautiful book, another on the way, and you may have seen them a couple months ago when they gave away a beautiful restored house on Facebook. (Yes, really!! It's around the corner from us, so we got to watch the whole transformation.) I've created flowers for a few of their spaces, and last spring they asked me to create dramatic flowers for their One Room Challenge master bedroom reveal.

Warm Autumn Wedding in the Country

Japanese Heritage Bridals

This shoot with Jessica's Photography came about when her friend discovered some forgotten pieces from her family heritage. Her father came to the United States from Japan, and after he died, she inherited his colorful hand painted Japanese dishes that she never even knew existed. She was so inspired by the colorful beauty of a history she felt she was just getting a glimpse at, she asked if we could design a bridal shoot around it. This palette of red and purples felt a little risky to me, and liked the way the muddled, varied tones tied everything together.

Soft and Feminine Sundance Wedding

April may just be the most beautiful time of year, and not just because it's the month of my birthday! It always seems that in April, the earth is getting dolled up and putting on a parade. Every surface seems to sprout delicate blossoms with subtle nuances of color. For Rachel's wedding, we drew inspiration from the season, designing with fluttering white blossoms, blush and mauve petals and touches of one of my favorites, the adorable blue muscari. The arrangements were designed in aged, mossy clay bowls, as though sprouting from the moist spring earth itself.

Modern Decadence Autumn Wedding

This October wedding was a celebration of all the natural beauty of Autumn. The bride, Anna, is an artist herself (she designed the invitations!) so she wanted to play with all the subtleties and richness the season has to offer. We created a romantic, wild design with modern sensibilities. Painterly leaves, fruiting branches, full blooms and aromatic herbs drew guests in with vibrant colors and unexpected details. Barefoot and wandering through scattered fall leaves, the bride ascended the aisle in her cool Free People dress as a friend played acoustic guitar. It was easy to feel the love these two have for each other, and I don't think anyone had dry eyes by the end of it. After the ceremony, everyone feasted on delicious seasonal food, and danced the night away by candlelight under the bright mountain stars.

Patina and Petals || Intimate Winter Wedding Design

Today, I'm pulling out my props and finalizing some styling details for my shoot for the Photo Native photography workshop. So I thought this would be the perfect time to finally share the shoot I designed last year! I have been fortunate to design the film shoot every year so far, and I love the experience of creating a story for our student photographers to capture according to their own interpretation.

Influenced by the natural patina of antique silver, this indoor wedding design was curated using elements that manifest the organic beauty special objects develop over time . As metals age, they take on an iridescent quality with a variety of jewel-like tones. This palette was reflected in the deep pigments of the flowers. Tender spring blooms like hellebore, tinted ranunculus and sweet pea, and fragrant lilac were paired with sculptural branches and rugged juniper. Bathed in subdued window light, we kept the design elements surrounding our real couple few and significant, allowing their love and natural chemistry to shine through. The bride was draped in a billowing silk shift, adorned simply with a striking brown diamond ring. Together, they nestled comfortably into a natural nook, created with clusters of juniper and foraged bits. Heirloom elements, including classical wax seals on handmade paper, spools of softest silk, a homemade pavlova wedding cake and an antique wedding crown of tiny waxed flowers, further communicated the depth of their commitment.

Primaveral | Belgian Countryside in Spring

This April, I had the incredible opportunity to join some wonderful florist friends in the remote village of Charneux in eastern Belgium. We spent the most idyllic few days taking morning walks to forage from the pastures, cutting from Emily's garden, arranging with all of my favorite spring varieties, using natural botanicals we brought in from outside to dye silks and linens and being incredibly inspired by the scenery.

I have so many fond memories from this experience, including walking down to the thirteenth century abbey and chatting late into the night with some of the most wonderful women from all over the world. But there was one moment that I'm sure will stick with me. One morning, I was sitting in the sun room of our ancient stone farmhouse, eating a quiet, solitary breakfast as I soaked in the sun's rays. Some movement caught the corner of my eye, and I turned toward the large window to see a herd of cows being let out into the pasture. I watches as they poured into the field, bounding and bouncing with joy. I have never seen cows act so excited or happy, so I ran outside to watch them closer as they literally danced, pounding the ground and rolling around, releasing the scent of new spring grass into the air.

Italian Inspired June Wedding

I have to say, I seriously love my couples. Alysha and Chris put so much love into every little detail of their wedding, making it such a special day. They are both inspired by Italian landscapes, so that became the drawing point for the overall wedding design. The groom hand painted each invitation envelop one by one with a Tuscan Landscape scene, and his sister calligraphed each menu and place card by hand, so each was slightly unique. I brought in all the best June flowers. Mock orange, peonies, garden roses, smoke bush, honeysuckle and blueberries. For their mountain ceremony, we drew from the wisteria in Italy, which you seem to see taking over a building around every corner in the spring. I draped their arch in romantic greenery and hanging white flowers to mimic the look of wisteria, then arranged garden roses climbing and "growing" up one side for a natural, overgrown look. The reception at the Grand America was classically inspired with tables draped in low garland and candles, and giant antique urns filled with olive and smoke bush. It was such a beautiful day to celebrate the love of these two.

Monochrome Part 1: Earthy White

Last year, I was asked to design a three-part feature for Utah Bride and Groom Magazine. I partnered with Lindsey Shaun Photography, who came up with a concept of monochrome. I designed three different wedding scenes in White, Grey and Black. For the White feature, I wanted to evoke a feeling of warmth and earthy modernity. White can often feel overly modern and stark, so I brought in natural feeling elements like raw wood, handmade ceramics and flowers with a lot of movement to give it more of a natural, laid back vibe.

Last year, I was asked to design a three-part feature for Utah Bride and Groom Magazine. I partnered with Lindsey Shaun Photography, who came up with a concept of monochrome. I designed three different wedding scenes in White, Grey and Black. I wanted the Grey Feature to feel elegant, yet aged and worn. I used a lot of greys with patina; tarnished silver, driftwood grey table and dusty grey foliage. I pared back the elements for this shoot and kept the flowers minimal to highlight the interesting textures on the tabletop.

Monochrome Part 3: Modern Masters Black

Last year, I was asked to design a three-part feature for Utah Bride and Groom Magazine. I partnered with Lindsey Shaun Photography, who came up with a concept of monochrome. I designed three different wedding scenes in White, Grey and Black. The black concept was modern and slightly inspired by moody Dutch Master paintings. Rather than feeling too dark or gothic, black works to create an inviting space when you use rich elements like dark florals and fruits, alongside hand-forged iron pieces like the candlestick and flatware. This editorial was also featured in Utah Style and Design Magazine as a dinner party, and I know this is one dinner party I wouldn't want to leave.

Norweigan Spring Wedding with a Baby Goat!

Today, this beautiful shoot is published over on Ruffled Blog, here. The inspiration for this shoot came from photographer Isabel Johansen's childhood in Norway. It included some of my favorite spring blooms, and many details you would see in a traditional Norwegian wedding. I kept the styling simple so the focus could be on the flowers and cultural details. An embroidered Norwegian wedding dress inspired the palette, and was worn with a traditional silver crown. Finally, the sweetest white baby goat wearing a floral collar made the setting feel as though we had just stepped in from the pastoral countryside of Norway.

Urban Alley Welcome Dinner

Last fall, I designed and styled The Themed Workshop, hosted by Megan Robinson Photography. For the welcome dinner, we greeted the attendees with a beautiful dinner set up in an urban alley in Salt Lake. I hand-dyed gauzy runners to spread down the tables along with opalescent votives and flowers in shades of chocolate and plum, arranged in large stone pots and simply in marble bowls under a glass cloche. We brought in two food trucks who pulled into the alley and served our attendees delicious Mexican food and custom cocktails or mocktails.

Romantic Castle Elopement

For this editorial shoot at The Themed Workshop, I wanted to create a story of two lovers running away and meeting at hilltop stone ruins to secretly exchange their vows. The glow of the setting sun made the golden bracken and clematis vine come to life against the stone. This shoot was a wild whirlwind, trying to beat the fading light, and I loved the magical results.

Mountaintop Farewell Dinner

For the farewell dinner at The Themed Workshop, we brought long wood tables to a clearing on top of the mountain. Ramblin' Rose brought the most incredible seasonal spread, which we used as the centerpiece for the table along with natural and foraged botanical touches and glowing lanterns. As the sun set and temperatures dropped in the canyon, we huddled together and ate from the table by candlelight. We feasted on amazing charcuterie, cheese, pickled vegetables, seasonal fruits and artisan chocolate. As we talked and laughed into the night, watching the colorful lightning storm in the distance, I wished that everyone could experience this kind of meal, surrounded by wonderful creative people.

I don't share personal photos in this space very often, but sometimes it's nice to see the person behind the brand. Last year at this time, I was waiting anxiously for the arrival of my sweet baby girl. My dear friend Maria Corona offered to take some photos of my family to document this special time. Even though I was feeling massive, uncomfortable, and could barely find any clothes to fit my expanding figure, I am so thankful for these photos that capture me in my element. Working with the beauties of nature and spending time with my sweet little family. Now that we have two babies, the time of only one seems like such a simpler time and I treasure being able to look back on those memories.

Neo-Tropical Romance | Cover Shoot for SLPC Bride and Groom

I was asked by Salt Lake Park City Bride and Groom to design some flowers to compliment the new HSL Restaurant in Salt Lake City. This restaurant has some of the coolest tile and decor, all in so many shades of beautiful green (my favorite color!) There is a distinct tropical vibe, so that became the concept for our shoot.

Tropical climates are so vastly different from my home desert climate of Utah, so the sheer variety of plants growing nearly everywhere is so inspiring to me! I don't work with tropical flowers very often, as, in the floral world, they usually feel overly-bright and bulky. However, when I visit tropical landscapes, I am instead drawn to the wild textures and more delicate bits. I love the fluttering maidenhair fern growing along the rainforest floor, tiny fairy-like orchids feeding off ancient trees and golden grasses swaying along the sandy beaches. These elements in subtle, earthy shades became the inspiration for my take on tropical flowers.

Minimal White Studio Event

I love any opportunity to support the success other creative business owners like myself. So it was an honor to design the first anniversary event for White Space Studios with my friend and incredible event planner, Gatherist.

White Space is a beautiful natural light photography studio located in Bountiful Utah. Drawing inspiration from the simplicity of the studio and the concept of "white space," we created a dinner party design that felt minimal and inviting. Rather than bringing floral elements to the tabletop, I created installations of climbing ivy, "growing" up the walls and along the ceiling beams. Small clear glass bud vases of twiggy winter florals and bare branches were scattered throughout the space.

We kept the tablescape low and clean with simple marble votives, taper candles in aged silver candlesticks, natural linen, handmade dishes and a sculptural twig at each place setting. Flour and Flourish provided beautiful desserts like this browned butter cake, and owner of the studio, Tracy Layne Portraits, captured the design and process as we set up.

Mountaintop Elopement

Ahh, September. The days are getting shorter and chillier, the light is more subdued and the leaves are just beginning their transition with a touch of color. This is a shoot I put together with incredible Pittsburg photographer Joey Kennedy last September. It is an all-time favorite because we kept things really simple and let the natural elements and completely foraged flowers speak for themselves. Because the beauty found in nature speaks volumes.
