The tips are divided into four different sections: White belt, Green belt, Black belt and Gmail Master. The tips are made also available as a Printable guide (PDF).

White Belt
Use stars to indicate a note is special: Use stars to easily mark certain messages as important or indicate that you need to reply to them later. Try Superstars in Gmail Labs for more star options.

Reply by chat: Before you respond to an email, check the footer of the message to see if the other person is online. If they’re available, you can save time by clicking “Reply by chat” and get them in real-time rather than over email.

Organize your email with labels: Labels do the work of folders, plus you can add more than one to a single message. Give important emails brightly colored labels, and you’ll be able to scan your inbox and quickly fnd the good stuff.

Clean up your inbox using “Move to” – it works just like folders: You can use the “Move to” button at the top of your inbox to easily move a message out of your inbox and add a label at the same time – just as if you were moving it to a folder. If you have lots of labels, you can pick the one you want by typing the first couple characters and let auto-complete find the right one.

Archive messages to tidy up your inbox without deleting anything: Gmail gives you tons of free storage space so you can save everything you want. While messages in your trash get deleted after 30 days, archived messages are kept forever. Archiving messages moves them out of your inbox and into “All Mail” for safekeeping, so you can search for them later. It’s like moving old email to a giant storage room that you never have to organize.

Join forces to rid the world of spam: Gmail users play an important role in blocking spam — when you report an email as spam, our system quickly learns to start blocking similar messages. The more spam the community marks, the smarter our system becomes. If you see a spam message, click “Report Spam” to do your part.

Search your mail instead of sorting: Instead of sorting by date or sender, you can enter keywords in the Gmail search box to fnd the exact message you’re looking for. It works just like Google search: if you’re looking for a message that contains the word “shopping,” simply type shopping in the search box and press Search Mail.

Import your email and contacts from your old address: If you’re new to Gmail, you can import your mail and contacts from other email providers, including Yahoo!, Hotmail, AOL, and many more from the “Accounts and Import” tab under Gmail Settings. You can even choose to have your messages forwarded from your other account for 30 days, giving you time to take Gmail for a test drive.

Spice up your inbox with a theme: Choose from over 30 options to personalize your inbox. Go to the Themes tab under Settings and pick from nature themes, themes that change with the weather, and many more.

Green Belt
Talk face-to-face with video chat: It’s not the same to read “lol” as to hear your friend laugh at your joke. Have a face-to-face conversation (or audio-only if you don’t have a webcam) using Gmail voice and video chat. Download the plug-in at gmail.com/videochat.

Use Tasks as a handy to-do list: Turn on Tasks in Labs and you’ll see a “Tasks” link under the “Contacts” link on the left of your screen. Clicking “Tasks” will open the task list, where you can add new items directly, or you can convert emails into tasks by clicking the More Actions menu and selecting “Add to Tasks.” You can also access your task list from your mobile phone at www.gmail.com/tasks.

Use filters to control the flow of incoming mail: Set up filters to automatically label, archive, delete, star, or forward certain types of incoming messages. You can create a filter based on any message – just choose “Filter messages like this” from the “More actions” drop-down menu to get started.

Highlight important emails using filters and colored labels: Set up filters so that emails from certain senders (or on certain topics) automatically appear with colored labels. That way, you can scan new mail just by looking at the colors.

Never forget an attachment again: Turn on the Forgotten Attachment Detector in Labs, and you’ll get an alert if you mentioned attaching a file but forgot to do so.

Tell your friends what you’re up to with a status message: Write your own status message in the Chat box let people know what you’re up to. Your status message can be anything you want – something funny, a link to a photo or web page, or a note to say you’re away from the computer.

Send email from your phone: Use Gmail for mobile to read and send emails on the go, or use Gmail’s free IMAP to sync with your phone’s own email client. Just type www.gmail.com into your phone’s browser to get started.

Preview attachments without downloading them: You can easily preview an attached document instead of downloading and opening it in a separate program. Just click the “View” or “View as html” link to open a preview in a new window.

Avoid email gaffes with Undo Send: Oops, hit “Send” too soon? Turn it on in Labs and give yourself a grace period of a few seconds to cancel sending, then edit your message before sending again.

Tell everyone when you’ll be back with vacation responder: Going away from your mail for a while? Use Gmail’s vacation responder under Settings to set up a custom response that will be automatically sent to anyone who emails you while you’re away.

Nothing says “I’m excited” like a bouncing happy face emoticon: If you’re tired of not being able to find the right words to express yourself, emoticons can help. Gmail has tons of images (smiley faces, food icons, broken hearts, and more) that you can use in your messages and chats. To add an emoticon, just click the smiley face “Insert Emoticon” button on the toolbar and select the image you want. For even more options, enable Extra Emoji in Labs (“emoji” is Japanese for emoticons).

Black Belt
Get through your mail faster with keyboard shortcuts: Using keyboard shortcuts will help you shave milliseconds off every action, which can add up to a lot of saved minutes each week. Enable keyboard shortcuts in Settings and use “j” and “k” to navigate up and down within your inbox, “o” to open messages, “r” to reply, “c” to compose, “s” to add or remove a star, “e” to archive, and more. Hit “?” at any time to see the reference guide with a full list of keyboard shortcuts.

Use search operators to find the exact message you’re looking for: The real power of Gmail search lies in search operators, or words that help modify your queries. For example, if you want a specific email Lisa sent containing a pdf, type “from:lisa has:attachment,” or to find all the messages in your inbox sent directly to you that you haven’t read yet, type: “to:me is:unread in:inbox.” Turn on Search Auto-complete in Labs to make using search operators even easier.

Filter your email with personalized email addresses: You actually get more address variations than just “yourusername@gmail.com,” all of which get delivered to you. You can put a plus (“+”) sign and any combination of words or numbers after your name, like changing hikingfan@gmail.com to hikingfan+mailinglists@gmail.com or hikingfan+junk@gmail.com. Then you can easily add a filter to label and/or archive messages sent to the variations.

See which messages were sent right to you: “Personal level indicators” put arrows next to messages in your inbox so you can tell if an email was addressed to you directly. A single arrow (›) is for emails sent to both you and others and double arrows (») indicate emails sent just to you. Switch the “Personal level indicators” option to “Show indicators” under Settings to see them.

Add “(EOM)” to the subject of one-liner messages: If you ever want to send a quick note where the subject is the entire message (like “Want to grab lunch at 12:30?”), but are annoyed when Gmail prompts you to add body text, just type “EOM” or “(EOM)” at the end of the subject line (short for End Of Message), and Gmail will politely send the message without the extra prompt.

Make Gmail go where the internet doesn’t: With offline Gmail, you can access your mail and use Gmail just like you’re used to, even when you’re not connected to the internet. Any messages you send while offline will be placed in your outbox and automatically sent the next time Gmail detects a connection. Get started by turning on offline Gmail from the Labs tab under Settings.

Quickly add multiple attachments to an email: If you want to send a few flies from the same folder, simply hold down the Ctrl key (Cmd on Macs) and click on each file you want to attach to your message, or hold down the Shift key to select a continuous group of files. You’ll see progress bars on each attachment as it uploads.

Set up canned responses instead of typing the same reply over and over again: If you find yourself typing the same reply multiple times, try turning on Canned Responses in Labs. Compose your reply once, save it, and easily use the same message later. If you want to be fully automated, you can even set up filters that automatically reply to specific messages with different canned responses.

Use quick links to get anywhere in Gmail with one click: Quick Links allow you to create shortcuts to any bookmarkable URL in Gmail. Enable Quick Links in Gmail Labs and choose “Add Quick Link” to save a link to any page that you’re on. For example, you could add a link to an email with your frequent flier information that you reference a lot, or add a link to a search you do every day, like “is:unread.”

Send and archive in one step: Turn on “Send & Archive” from the Labs tab under Settings, and you’ll see a new button that sends your reply and then archives the thread with one click.

Click less and watch more using YouTube, Flickr, Picasa, and Yelp previews: Gmail can automatically detect commonly emailed links – YouTube videos, Picasa and Flickr links, and Yelp reviews – and show previews of these right inside Gmail. Turn on the four preview labs from the Labs tab under Settings, and rather than having to click on a Picasa or Flickr album link to see the photos it contains, you can see photos right in the message itself. Similarly, messages with YouTube links will show the video below the message, and Yelp links will show ratings, phone numbers, and other listing information.

Gmail Master
Bring Google Calendar and Docs to Gmail: Instead of keeping three separate tabs open, add Docs and Calendar gadgets in Gmail Labs and see everything in one place. The Calendar gadget shows your agenda and provides alerts prior to events, and the Docs gadget displays all your recently accessed docs.

Send SMS text messages right from Gmail: How often do you try to chat with somebody and they don’t respond because they just walked away from their computer? You can keep the conversations going with a Labs feature that lets you send SMS text messages right from Gmail. Enable it in Labs under Settings, and then typing a phone number in the chat box search window. We’ll even save your friends’ numbers in your Contacts, so you can just type names into the chat box and select Send SMS.

Personalize your RSS feeds in web clips: Gmail display feeds (news headlines and blog posts), ads and other information in the Web Clips section at the top of your inbox. There are feeds chosen by default, but you can customize yours by clicking the “Web Clips” tab in Settings.

Use Gmail on your own domain: You can use Gmail from your own domain or run your organization on Google Apps. Save time and money using Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs for your business or organization. Get started at google.com/a.

Search for superstars by name: Enabling superstars in Labs gives you 11 more ways to star your messages. You can use the “has” operator to search for emails with different types of stars, like “has:yellow-star”, “has:blue-star”, or “has:red-bang”. In Settings, just hover your mouse over each superstar icon to find the star names.

Forget to sign out of a public computer? Sign out remotely: If you sign into Gmail from multiple computers, but are worried you may have forgotten to sign out of one, you can sign out remotely. At the bottom of your inbox, you’ll see information about the time and location of the last activity on your account. Click “Details” to see whether your account is still open in another location and “Sign out all other sessions” to close other open sessions.

Access your mail via https: If you regularly use Gmail on unencrypted wireless connections at coffee shops or airports or college dorms, then you might want an additional layer of security. Check the option in Settings to “Always use https”, and we’ll ensure your email is always encrypted. Note that no matter what, Gmail always uses https to protect your password when you log in, but because https can make your mail slower, we don’t use https once you’re logged in unless you ask for it.

Google's faster public DNS server - 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

Google announced that they have started offering public DNS servers as well. One of these useful features is a so called Windows “auto-run” utility which pops up a small window notifying us of every removable media we insert into computer such as CD, DVD or USB key. Thanks to Windows auto-run, we get convenient way of playing movies or listening to our favorite songs with just one mouse click. Unfortunately we are not the only one who like Windows auto-run feature. Malware writers like it too.

One of the first examples of trojan that was designed to take advantage of auto-run feature was notorious Switchblade Trojan, which was able (if installed on USB key) to steal all important data, password and other personal information from Windows operating system without you ever knowing about it. These days Switchblade is not so dangerous as before but instead one even more dangerous virus stepped into its place. This is so called Conficker or Downadup virus which also takes advantage of Windows auto-run to sneak into one’s computers.

Because Conficker is a very nasty virus and by nature difficult to remove we suggest you to stop Conficker and similar trojans by disabling Windows auto-run feature once and for all.

Now there are numerous ways of disabling auto-run utility but one of the most convenient ways of doing it is to download small and free Autorun Blocker and let it do the job instead of you.

The procedure is short and simple. All you have to do is to install Autorun Blocker, run it and when prompted to choose “disable autorun on all drives”. This will permanently disable Windows auto-run feature and secure you from any malware designed to automatically infect computer via USB.

Requirements:

Windows 2003, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 2000, Windows XP

Download Autorun Blocker

Microsoft to unveil Beta 2 for IE8

The world's largest software giant Microsoft Corp. unveils the second test version of Internet Explorer 8 which is complete with features update on the Web browser, most commonly used. This second test version is beta 2. Although the internet Explorer enjoys a market share of almost 75%, the new version has come up with new features.

This version being aimed at a larger customer base will enable convenience, flexibility and complete security.

A part of the market share of Internet Explorer was taken away by Mozilla's Firefox, so Microsoft is on the way to bring up more updates on Internet Explorer.

•The beta 2 version will have features similar to the ones found in Firefox 3 and will include a "smart" address bar too so that users can be directed to the unique website addresses.

•This version will also have a mode called "InPrivate Browsing" so that the temporary and the previous internet files and also the cookies are not stored on a user's PC.

•Also the version is having feature which will allow a user to obstruct the content coming from the third-party site. This enhanced capability will block the third party from tracking the user's online behaviour.

•The other features known as "Activities" will also be included in this version which will allow the user to use information such as the address existing on one page along with other service like the online mapping without even coming out from the original site.

The official launch date of Internet Explorer 8 has not been declared by Microsoft as yet.

19 Secrets about Windows XP

19 Secrets about Windows XP

1. It boasts how long it can stay up. Whereas previous versions of Windows were coy about how long they went between boots, XP is positively proud of its stamina. Go to the Command Prompt in the Accessories menu from the All Programs start button option, and then type ’systeminfo’. The computer will produce a lot of useful info, including the uptime. If you want to keep these, type ’systeminfo > info.txt’. This creates a file called info.txt you can look at later with Notepad. (Professional Edition only).

2. You can delete files immediately, without having them move to the Recycle Bin first. Go to the Start menu, select Run… and type ‘gpedit.msc’; then select User Configuration, Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Explorer and find the Do not move deleted files to the Recycle Bin setting. Set it. Poking around in gpedit will reveal a great many interface and system options, but take care — some may stop your computer behaving as you wish. (Professional Edition only).

3. You can lock your XP workstation with two clicks of the mouse. Create a new shortcut on your desktop using a right mouse click, and enter ‘rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation’ in the location field. Give the shortcut a name you like. That’s it — just double click on it and your computer will be locked. And if that’s not easy enough, Windows key + L will do the same.

4. XP hides some system software you might want to remove, such as Windows Messenger, but you can tickle it and make it disgorge everything. Using Notepad or Edit, edit the text file /windows/inf/sysoc.inf, search for the word ‘hide’ and remove it. You can then go to the Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel, select Add/Remove Windows Components and there will be your prey, exposed and vulnerable.

5. For those skilled in the art of DOS batch files, XP has a number of interesting new commands. These include ‘eventcreate’ and ‘eventtriggers’ for creating and watching system events, ‘typeperf’ for monitoring performance of various subsystems, and ’schtasks’ for handling scheduled tasks. As usual, typing the command name followed by /? will give a list of options — they’re all far too baroque to go into here.

6. XP has IP version 6 support — the next generation of IP. Unfortunately this is more than your ISP has, so you can only experiment with this on your LAN. Type ‘ipv6 install’ into Run… (it’s OK, it won’t ruin your existing network setup) and then ‘ipv6 /?’ at the command line to find out more. If you don’t know what IPv6 is, don’t worry and don’t bother.

7. You can at last get rid of tasks on the computer from the command line by using ‘taskkill /pid’ and the task number, or just ‘tskill’ and the process number. Find that out by typing ‘tasklist’, which will also tell you a lot about what’s going on in your system.

8. XP will treat Zip files like folders, which is nice if you’ve got a fast machine. On slower machines, you can make XP leave zip files well alone by typing ‘regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll’ at the command line. If you change your mind later, you can put things back as they were by typing ‘regsvr32 zipfldr.dll’.

9. XP has ClearType — Microsoft’s anti-aliasing font display technology — but doesn’t have it enabled by default. It’s well worth trying, especially if you were there for DOS and all those years of staring at a screen have given you the eyes of an astigmatic bat. To enable ClearType, right click on the desktop, select Properties, Appearance, Effects, select ClearType from the second drop-down menu and enable the selection. Expect best results on laptop displays. If you want to use ClearType on the Welcome login screen as well, set the registry entry HKEY_USERS/.DEFAULT/Control Panel/desktop/FontSmoothingType to 2.

10. You can use Remote Assistance to help a friend who’s using network address translation (NAT) on a home network, but not automatically. Get your pal to email you a Remote Assistance invitation and edit the file. Under the RCTICKET attribute will be a NAT IP address, like 192.168.1.10. Replace this with your chum’s real IP address — they can find this out by going to http://www.whatismyip.com — and get them to make sure that they’ve got port 3389 open on their firewall and forwarded to the errant computer.

11. You can run a program as a different user without logging out and back in again. Right click the icon, select Run As… and enter the user name and password you want to use. This only applies for that run. The trick is particularly useful if you need to have administrative permissions to install a program, which many require. Note that you can have some fun by running programs multiple times on the same system as different users, but this can have unforeseen effects.

12. Windows XP can be very insistent about you checking for auto updates, registering a Passport, using Windows Messenger and so on. After a while, the nagging goes away, but if you feel you might slip the bonds of sanity before that point, run Regedit, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/Advanced and create a DWORD value called EnableBalloonTips with a value of 0.

13. You can start up without needing to enter a user name or password. Select Run… from the start menu and type ‘control userpasswords2′, which will open the user accounts application. On the Users tab, clear the box for Users Must Enter A User Name And Password To Use This Computer, and click on OK. An Automatically Log On dialog box will appear; enter the user name and password for the account you want to use.

14. Internet Explorer 6 will automatically delete temporary files, but only if you tell it to. Start the browser, select Tools / Internet Options… and Advanced, go down to the Security area and check the box to Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed.

15. XP comes with a free Network Activity Light, just in case you can’t see the LEDs twinkle on your network card. Right click on My Network Places on the desktop, then select Properties. Right click on the description for your LAN or dial-up connection, select Properties, then check the Show icon in notification area when connected box. You’ll now see a tiny network icon on the right of your task bar that glimmers nicely during network traffic.

16. The Start Menu can be leisurely when it decides to appear, but you can speed things along by changing the registry entry HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Control Panel/Desktop/MenuShowDelay from the default 400 to something a little snappier. Like 0.

17. You can rename loads of files at once in Windows Explorer. Highlight a set of files in a window, then right click on one and rename it. All the other files will be renamed to that name, with individual numbers in brackets to distinguish them. Also, in a folder you can arrange icons in alphabetised groups by View, Arrange Icon By… Show In Groups.

18. Windows Media Player will display the cover art for albums as it plays the tracks — if it found the picture on the Internet when you copied the tracks from the CD. If it didn’t, or if you have lots of pre-WMP music files, you can put your own copy of the cover art in the same directory as the tracks. Just call it folder.jpg and Windows Media Player will pick it up and display it.

19. My antivirus (AVG) detects this virus but doesn’t clean it completely. I tried deleting it manually but it was coming back again. When i was tired of removing this virus I got this idea and it worked like a charm. We are going to replace the Logo1_.exe file with another harmless executable file and set its permissions to read only. Now the virus wont be back again.

Here is what you exactly do to remove the Logo1_.exe virus:

1. open task manager and look for the process logo1_ and terminate it
2. now go to c:/windows and delete logo1_.exe file
3. create a copy of any exe file ( I used TASKMAN ) and rename it to Logo1_
4. change its permissions to read only.

All Keyboard Shortcuts

All Keyboard Shortcuts

Shift + F10 right-clicks.
Win + L (XP Only): Locks keyboard. To disable the display of local or networked drives when you click My Computer go to :

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Now in the right pane create a new DWORD item and name it NoDrives. Now modify it's value and set it to 3FFFFFF (Hexadecimal) Now press F5 to refresh. When you click on My Computer, no drives will be shown. To enable display of drives in My Computer, simply delete this DWORD item. It's .reg file is as follows:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]

"NoDrives"=dword:03ffffff

2) Pop a banner each time Windows Boots :

To pop a banner which can contain any message you want to display just before a user is going to log on, go to the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WinLogon

Now create a new string Value in the right pane named LegalNoticeCaption and enter the value that you want to see in the Menu Bar. Now create yet another new string value and name it: LegalNoticeText. Modify it and insert the message you want to display each time Windows boots. This can be effectively used to display the company's private policy each time the user logs on to his NT box. It's .reg file would be:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]

"LegalNoticeCaption"="Caption here."

3) Secure your Desktop Icons and Settings :

You can save your desktop settings and secure it from your nerdy friend by playing with the registry. Simply launch the Registry Editor go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

In the right pane create a new DWORD Value named NoSaveSettings and modify it's value to 1. Refresh and restart for the settings to get saved.

4) Deleting System Options from the Start menu :

You can actually remove the Find and Run options from the start menu by performing a simple registry hack. Again like always Launch the registry editor and scroll down to the below key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Right-click on the right pane and select New, DWORD Value. Name it NoFind.(To remove the RUN option name it NoRun). Double-click the newly create DWORD to edit it's value and enter 1 as its value. This will disable the FIND option of the Start Menu and will also disable the default Shortcut key(F3 for Find.)

To restore the Run or find command modify the value of the DWORD to 0 or simply Delete the DWORD value.

5) Cleaning Recent Docs Menu and the RUN MRU :

The Recent Docs menu can be easily disabled by editing the Registry. To do this go to the following Key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Now in the right pane, create a new DWORD value by the name: NoRecentDocsMenu and set it's value to 1.

Restart Explorer to save the changes.

You can also clear the RUN MRU history. All the listings are stored in the key:

HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RunMRU

You can delete individual listings or the entire listing. To delete History of Find listings go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Doc Find Spec MRU and delete.

6) Other Similar Useful Tricks :

Launch Regedit and go to the following Registry Key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/CurrentVersion/Policies

Under this key, there will definitely be a key named explorer. Now under this explorer key we can create new DWORD values and modify it's value to 1 in order to impose the restriction. If you want to remove the Restriction, then you can simply delete the respective DWORD values or instead change their values to 0. The following is a list of DWORD values that can be created under the Explorer Key-:

NoDeletePrinter: Disables Deletion of already installed Printers

NoAddPrinter: Disables Addition of new Printers

NoRun : Disables or hides the Run Command

NoSetFolders: Removes Folders from the Settings option on Start Menu (Control Panel, Printers, Taskbar)

NoSetTaskbar: Removes Taskbar system folder from the Settings option on Start Menu

NoFind: Removes the Find Tool (Start >Find)

NoDrives: Hides and does not display any Drives in My Computer

NoNetHood: Hides or removes the Network Neighborhood icon from the desktop

NoDesktop: Hides all items including, file, folders and system folders from the Desktop

NoClose: Disables Shutdown and prevents the user from normally shutting down Windows.

NoSaveSettings: Means to say, 'Don't save settings on exit'

DisableRegistryTools: Disable Registry Editing Tools (If you disable this option, the Windows Registry

Editor(regedit.exe) too will not work.)

NoRecentDocsHistory: Removes Recent Document system folder from the Start Menu (IE 4 and above)

ClearRecentDocsOnExit: Clears the Recent Documents system folder on Exit.

Nolnternetlcon: Removes the Internet (system folder) icon from the Desktop

Under the same key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/CurrentVersion/Policies you can create new

subkeys other than the already existing Explorer key. Now create a new key and name it System. Under this

new key, system we can create the following new DWORD values(1 for enabling the particular option and 0 for disabling the particular option):

* NODispCPL: Hides Control Panel

* NoDispBackgroundPage: Hides Background page.

* NoDispScrsavPage: Hides Screen Saver Page

* NoDispAppearancePage: Hides Appearance Page

* NoDispSettingsPage: Hides Settings Page

* NoSecCPL: Disables Password Control Panel

* NoPwdPage: Hides Password Change Page

* NoAdminPaqe: Hides Remote Administration Page

* NoProfilePage: Hides User Profiles Page

* NoDevMgrPage: Hides Device Manager Page

* NoConfigPage: Hides Hardware Profiles Page

* NoFileSysPage: Hides File System Button

* NoVirtMemPage: Hides Virtual Memory Button

Similarly, if we create a new subkey named WinOldApp, we can add the following DWORD values under it(1 for enabling the particular option and 0 for disabling the particular option):

Disabled: Disable MS-DOS Prompt

NoRealMode: Disable Single-Mode MS-DOS.

15 Top Windows XP secrets

1. Useful key shortcuts available:

- Windows key + D - shows the desktop
- Windows key + M - minimizes all open windows
- Windows key + Shift + M - maximizes all open windows
- Windows key + E - Runs Windows Explorer
- Windows key + R - shows the RUN dialog
- Windows key + F - shows Search window
- Windows key + Break - shows System Properties box
- Windows key + TAB - Go through taskbar applications
- Windows key + PAUSE Display the System Properties dialog box
- Windows key + U Open Utility Manager
- ALT + TAB - Cycle through opened applications
- Hold down CTRL while dragging an item to Copy it
- CTRL + ESC Display the Start menu
- ALT + ENTER View the properties for the selected item
- F4 key Display the Address bar list in My Computer or
- NUM LOCK + Asterisk (*) Display all of the subfolders that are under the selected folder

2. Lock Windows to protect computer
You can lock Windows to protect the computer when leaving the station easily by creating a shortcut with the path rundll32.exeuser32.dll, LockWorkStation. The Windows key + L is also a shortcut to this feature.

3. Edit sysoc.inf to list all software
To show all software that can be removed from your computer (including protected Windows services), you can manually edit (using notepad for example) the sysoc.inf file located in Windows\inf\. Just remove the word hide next to the software pack.
*Note* - use this at your own risk. Removing critical components of the system will make Windows instable.

4. Windows XP comes with IPv4 and IPv6
Windows XP comes both IPv4 and IPv6 support. To enable IPv6, you can install the protocols needed with the command "ipv6 install" in the command-prompt. Then type ipv6 /? to see the options. The installation will not remove the IPv4 protocols so your current configuration will still work.

5. Access Task Manager with shortcut
To access the Task Manager easier, you can make a shortcut that points to %windir%\system32\taskmgr.exe.

6. Stop treating ZIP files like Folders
If you don't want your Windows XP to treat ZIP files like folders, you can disable this component by running regsvr32 /u zipfldr.dll at the command prompt or Run dialog. If you start missing it, you can enable it by typing regsvr32 zipfldr.dll.

7. Run program as diffrent user
You can run a program as a different user. Right click an application and select Run As command.

8. Switch users leaving applications opened
You can switch users leaving the applications opened too (*NOTE* use this only when needed since it could lead to system instability).
Go to Task Manager - processes and end the process explorer.exe. This will end only your session and not all applications. Then go to Applications tab, click New task and type runas /user:domainname\username explorer.exe. A password prompt will appear to login to the desired username. The user's session will start, with all your previously applications running.
I recommend to open first a command-line prompt and type runas /? to see all the options available.

9. Rename multiple files in Windows at once
Rename multiple files in Windows at once. Select them all, right click and select Rename. Enter the desired name. They will be renamed using what you specified, with a number in brackets to distinguish them.

10. Task kill feature in Windows
Windows has a task kill feature similar to Linux. Go to a command prompt and run the command tasklist to see running processes with PID numbers. Then type tskill <PID> to end the specific task. This forces an instant closing of the task.

11. Edit features with GPEDIT.MSC
You can edit many features by running gpedit.msc. You can add log on/log off scripts here and many features.

12. Edit accounts in the command prompt
You can edit accounts by running "control userpasswords2" at the command prompt.

13. Use systeminfo.exe to see System Information
You can use the systeminfo.exe command in the command prompt to see System Information, including all Windows updates and hotfixes.

14. Disable system services for maximum performance
There are system services that you can disable to free up the system's load. To access the interface that permits you to make changes to system's services, type services.msc and the command prompt.
This is a list of services that are *usually* useless and can be safely disabled.
Alerter
Application Layer Gateway Service,
Application Management
Automatic Updates
Background Intelligent Transfer
Clipbook
Distributed Link Tracking Client
Distributed Transaction Coordinater
Error Reporting Service
Fast User Switching Compatibility
IMAPI CD-Burning
Indexing Service
IPSEC Services
Messenger
Net Logon
Net Meeting
Remote Desktop Sharing
Network DDE
Network DDE DSDM
Portable Media Serial Number
Remote Desktop Help Session Manager
Remote Registry
Secondary Logon
Smartcard
SSDP Discovery Service
Uninterruptible Power Supply
Universal Plug and Play Device Host
Upload Manager
Webclient
Wireless Zero Configuration
WMI Performance Adaptor

*NOTE*: Make sure you don't need them since some applications you're using could depend on them. If you make any application to fail by disabling any of the services, go back and enable it again.

15. Repair Windows XP by using the XP installation CD
If your system failes to start due to an error related to missing HAL.DLL, invalid Boot.ini or any other critical system boot files you can repair this by using the XP installation CD. Simply boot from your XP Setup CD and enter the Recovery Console. Then run "attrib -H -R -S" on the C:\Boot.ini file and delete it. Run "Bootcfg /Rebuild" and then Fixboot.

New Folder.exe Virus Removal Tool

Virus also known as- IT University Sohanad W32.HLLW.Ssdx newfolder.exe

If this virus infected in you computer, It will Disable the following …

Task Manager, Registry Editor, Folder Options, Run in start menu

And it will create exes like the icon of folders. Here is a quick look at my 7 tips which I have started using them recently more often.

1. Changing page orientation :- In Word’s default settings, the width of pages is shorter than the length. To change this, Go to Page Setup –> Orientation, select the Landscape icon. You are done. You can even have Customized size from the Size box.
2. Printing selected portions of document :- Sometimes you would like to print certain portions of a document. To do this, first select the portion of the document you want a print out of. Go to the Office button –> Print. In the dialog box, check the Selection box. You can also define the Page range.
3. Applying Subscripts and Superscripts :- To apply Subscript formatting to text in a Word document, press Control + Equal Sign. To apply Superscript formatting, press Control + Shift + Plus Sign.
4. Checking the Thesaurus :- Sometimes while writing your document, you need a synonym for a word, and might have no time to log on to the Internet. Word has its own built-in thesaurus. To access it, select the word for which you need a synonym and press Shift-F7.
5. Changing the case of letters :- One of the annoying things that happen to me is that I press the Caps Lock key by mistake, and not even realize it. The result is that words that need to be in lower case end up capitalized or vice versa. To fix this, select the text and press Shift + F3 to change the case of the words. This is a toggle key that will allow you to choose between block capitals, title case and sentence case.
6. Return Font to Default format :- You are working on a document in a particular font. You use Bold or Italics, etc to change the format for a word or a phrase. Now to get back to the default font format you were working with, press Ctrl and the Spacebar together.
7. Moving paragraphs Up or Down :- To move a paragraph up in a Word file, select the paragraph and press Alt + Shift+ Up arrow. To move a paragraph down, select it, press Alt + Shift + Down arrow.

Hope these may be helpful for you in future. I have some tips on Powerpoint as well, so Stay Glued

5 tips on Powerpoint 2007

It’s been more than a year now, I have been using Powerpoint 2007 to create presentations, All thanks to my college faculties for giving us presentations to be presented every week. During this one year, I have learned a lot on how to use the features in PowerPoint 2007, and what all features are there not available in earlier versions. I have listed down these points which will be helpful to you if you ever intend to give presentation anywhere.
Smart Art

1. SmartArt :- WOW, this is truly a Wow feature by Microsoft. SmartArt got great designs and shapes to be used. The good part is that you can change colors, give pre defined color combinations, which may suite your presentation theme and your topic. They also provide you designs for special purpose like Hierarchy, process, Chain reaction and few more… It completely eliminates the requirements for those drawing tool, used to draw those flow charts.
2. Formatting Images :- Basic formatting did exist in earlier versions, but was not very interactive. The new version is much better and provides some more better and required features. Changes made to the images can be seen live, as soon as you make any changes, you do not need to apply those changes to see the effect of it. Another feature provided is to disable the image compression which in turn increases the size of presentation but also the quality remains intact. To disable image compression Go to Image options (Appears when you insert and select an image) –> Compress images –> Options, and untick “Automatically perform Basic compression on save“. From there you can also set the density of the image as per the requirements. The only problem which I came to know later on was that you need to do this again and again, for different images, as it is not a permanent change.
3. Page Setup :- It is not possible to give a presentation in a single style on all the Projectors. According to the device you are presenting on, you need to change the page setup, hence getting the most of it. We cannot present the same presentation on Plasma and on a projector, as both have different aspect ratios. To select the proper page setup, Go to View tab –> Slide Master –>Page Setup. From here choose the correct setup you want to. You can have customized sizes as well.
Page Setup

4. Custom shows :- We are used to give long presentations in short duration, and leave the deep understanding part. You have to insert that data so that everyone could read that. One way is to put notes in each and every single slide, But in notes to, everything cannot be expressed. The other way is to create a complete slide and present a Custom show. How ? Just Go to Slide show tab –> Custom Slide, and choose the slides you want to show. Simple enough.
5. Rehearse Timings :- Timings are very important for us. If we go beyond those time limits, we are bound to get reduced marks. This rehearsal tool comes in handy, where in you can practice and see if your speech matches with the presentation and time allotted. You can also set the time for slides to switch automatically when you have rehearsed, and save that rehearsal. This is one of my favorite tools which I think was needed but the there was no alternative to that.

Adding Custom Sound Event in XP

We all know how to change a sound when window starts.
