August 20, 2010 - A Friday night race is a rare treat at times. So when I realized Spartan Speedway in Mason, MI was running non-wing sprint cars every other weekend, I decided I needed to check it out. A new car division at any track is a daunting venture, but this is a track with a new owner, and some regional misfits in non-wing sprints. So I approached this event with an open mind. Looking through the track results at www.spartanspeedway.com, I noted what would seem like a 12 car field. After leaving the Ambassador Bridge, making my way East on I-96 I arrived to see 16 sprint cars signed in for the nights action. A late arriving Ed Lute would take that number up to 17.

My last trip to Spartan Speedway was for a Sunday afternoon Superpro race won by Rob Buckley back in June 24, 2007. The biggest improvement I immediately noticed was "new" aluminum grandstands recycled from nearby Michigan International Speedway. In this economy, and times of environmental concern, I feel this is a very green move for a racetrack. As a photographer track lighting is also a concern, and I was glad to see come feature time that the track was adequately lit.

A decent field of Modifieds had a heavy caution count during their 50 lap feature won by Travis Eddy son of Michigan Motorsports Hall of Famer Mike Eddy.

Heat race wins went to Taylor Ferns and Charlie Schultz. This would be Schultz first run at Spartan since a 2001 entry in a winged car.

Mike Austrauskas would take the field to the green flag, with Jimmy McCune taking the lead on lap two. A spin by Hettinger and Ferns would bring out the caution and send McCune back to second. On the restart McCune would make it back to the front and hold the point until lap seven when Heeney would get by him in turn one, and Fedewa would push McCune back to third. Fedewa would move into the lead on a lap 21 outside pass and hold off a now second place Schultz until the checkers fell.

1.- 42 Tom Fedewa 2.- 50 Charlie Schultz 3.- 17 Jim Heeney 4.- 70 Jimmy McCune 5.- 5 Tommy Hurley 6.- 35 Chris Hettinger 7.- 41 Troy Underwood 8.- 4 Tyler Underwood 9.- 10 Davey Brown 10.-23 Matt Kinzinger 11.- 55 Taylor Ferns 12.- 8 Ed Lute 13.- 0 Doug Dietsch 14.-3a Mike Austrauskas 15.- 31 Craig Curtis 16.- 69 Tracy Rice 17.- 95 Gary Hollis

This is one of those dark days in racing, far removed from the racetrack. 26 year old Jesse Hockett of Warsaw, Missouri was lost in a shop accident on May 26, 2010. This coming after sweeping his last three races in his homestate. One of the most versatile sprint car racers in the world. Whether it was a 360 or 410, wing or not, Hoosier or Goodyear. He raced and won in USAC, WoO, ASCS and countless other series throughout the US and most recently in Australia. He won many prestigious races, including the last sprint car race at the famed Pheonix oval, Manzanita Speedway. I had the oppurtunity to see "The Rocket" hone his craft at such famed ovals as the aforementioned Manzanita, Eastbay, Eldora, Toledo, Winchester and Terre Haute. While I didn't know Jesse personally, I recall a short pitside conversation before he came home 3rd in the 2009 Tony Hulman Classic at Terre Haute. I can also recall reading various racing news on Sunday mornings of his numerous weekend victories. Those victories totaled 130 in a short and promising career. Godspeed Rocket, you'll be missed.

Friday, January 22, 2009 – Marc Davis Motorsports has lost a father, a leader, and a true inspiration with the passing of Harry Davis. We will always remember his courage, dedication, and the marks he left on the challenging road to make his son's dreams a reality.

Funeral arrangements are pending at this time. You may send a note of condolence to: 136 Bridle Path Lane, Mooresville, NC 28117 or by email at: rememberingharry@marcdavismotorsports.com

While I have only met Harry Davis once, I knew he would have a lasting impression. In a sport dominated by caucasians, Harry was not just an African American team owner trying to make it. He was a father and incredibly interesting individual. As someone who always enjoys meeting so many different car owners, drivers and fans that racing can bring to you, Harry was different then the usual. After retiring from NBC as a Washington, DC cameraman he relocated his family to North Carolina from Maryland. All to pursue his son Marc's dream of racing. Harry shared some stories of working at the White House during the pre 9/11 world in the US center of politics.

...and what a career it has been. Mr Midget, King of the Midgets, Miraculous Mel call him whatever you will. With younger brother Don at his side playing the role of crew chief for the past 51 years, the pairing racked up 7 USAC National Midgets Championships, 111 USAC Midget victories and nearly 380 victories. Most of these accolades came after his horrendous crash in 1965 at Langhorne, PA. A race that ended on lap 27 after a blown engine and ensuing crash almost ended Mel's life. He would lose most of his left hand and suffer burns to 40% of his body. Eleven months later he would make the field for his 1st Indy 500 start. His return to the cockpit was after brother Don and father Everett had fashioned a glove with a rubber socket that allowed him to steer with his left hand. He would come home 5th in a race won by Graham Hill. His best finish in eight 500 starts would be a third place in 1968. With brief stints in sprints cars over the years, many of Mel's 382 victories would come in midgets. My first experience seeing Mel race was at the 2005 Rumble in Fort Wayne. I would see him race the next 5 Rumbles, and also see the impact he and Don would have on almost all of the various drivers through the years. Almost anyone who has raced a midget in Indiana knows Mel and Don Kenyon. I find it fitting that Mel's last race would be 3 days before the end of the year, I can't imagine how hard it must be stop doing something you have done for 51 years. Thanks for the memories Mel.

September 26, 2009 - In his 7th night of racing at South Buxton in the 2009 season, Andrew Reaume would win his 6th feature. The night was worth a little as it was the Castrol UMP Late Model Shootout. The event now in it's 5 running, suffered from passport regulations, rainy weather and economic factors that have affected all of us in 2009.

It was a bittersweet victory for Reaume, after a terrifying wreck during hotlaps took his father Brett to the hospital. The throttle stuck going into turn 3 on the elder Reaume's black and yellow No. 77 sending the car through a series of violent barrel rolls and almost onto the nearby road.

19 cars would enter this years event down from last years 38. This years format relied on a pill draw to set the field for heat races. Heat race wins would go to Chris Ross, Justin Robinson and 2009 track champ Dale Glassford.

The Advantage Warehouse UMP Modified Fall Blowout would have 25 modifieds entered, and see the 30 lap feature shortened to 15 after a blinding fog rolled in off nearby Lake Erie making it impossible to see.

It's one of the most historic racing venues in the country. For one week — one Super DIRT Week — it welcomes more than 120,000 fans, more than 1,000 campers, and nearly 500 competitors. It's the New York State Fairgrounds, and this year count four World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series superstars among the list of competitors in a special four-lap exhibition that returns the winged Outlaws Sprint Cars to Syracuse for the first time since 1995.

The World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series has a storied history at Syracuse, with some of the biggest names in racing earning victories at the Mile, including Steve Kinser, Sammy Swindell, Doug Wolfgang, Dave Blaney and Billy Pauch. Kinser was the last World of Outlaws winner at the Moody Mile. He'll return on Friday, Oct. 9, and take on three of his World of Outlaws competitors, including championship contender Jason Meyers, to decide the King of the Mile.

“I always enjoyed running the miles and I had a lot of success at Syracuse,” said Kinser, a 20-time World of Outlaws champion and a five-time winner at Syracuse. “I have a lot of great memories of that Mile. The best race was when me and Jac Haudenschild went back and forth several times through traffic at crazy speeds, that was a lot of fun. This event should be great for the fans.”

The event will be a sneak preview of the World of Outlaws New Yorker 25 on Saturday, Oct. 10, at Rolling Wheels Raceway in Elbridge, N.Y. With only nine points separating three-time champion Donny Schatz and Meyers, and only another 29 points to Joey Saldana, every race is critical to the overall championship as the season winds down to the World Finals Nov. 5-7 at The Dirt Track @ Lowe's Motor Speedway.

“The King of the Mile will be a great opportunity for the Super DIRT Week fans at the New York State Fairgrounds to get up close to the World of Outlaws drivers and cars during the day on Friday, pick up a couple autographs and see these cars four-wide on the Moody Mile,” said World Racing Group CEO Brian Carter. “Steve Kinser is the sport's icon and has been one of the most successful drivers at Syracuse, so having him return to show a new generation of fans what Sprint Cars can do on the Mile will be one of the most exciting history lessons they'll ever see.”

Saturday, September 19, 2009 – Bixby, OK native Shane Stewart driving for Hoosier’s Joe Gaerte and Tim Norman took the checker’s on both nights of the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals. Driving the #3G entry sponsored and powered by Gaerte Engines, to victory in the preliminary feature on Friday night along with Brian McDonald. He would back that 15 lap feature win up with a $9,000 victory in the 30 lap feature on Saturday night. The 3/8 mile oval hosted the 5th Annual Canadian Sprint Car Nationals. With a growing purse and growing car counts, this year’s edition saw 77 cars take to the clock for time trials. Turn two resident and track owner Glenn Styres would take fast time with a 14.288 lap. With cars coming from British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec the Canadian element was covered. With Sprints On Dirt, Empire Super Sprints and the Patriot Sprints bringing several cars each, the US contingent was well represented. Not to mention former World of Outlaw traveller Paul McMahon was racing for Albertan Dennis MacEachern. This event speaks volumes about the promoter Ken Pelkie and the entire crew at Ohsweken. Not to mention all participating series not booking shows against each other. It certainly opened my eyes to the strength of winged 360 sprint cars. With all of the US racers having so many options in their own country all summer, September seems to be the right time to hold this race.
That will continue during Super DIRT Week.

By James MacDonald
August 14th (TOLEDO, Ohio) - The Indiana based CRA Super Series made their annual trip to the Glass City and it's famed high banked oval. 28 cars would be entered for the 100 lap event. In all the Gold Cup outlaw late model races held at Toledo this year the Richard Poe Motorsports #72 of Scott Hantz would dominate taking the checkers in all three events. At last weekends Berlin Raceway (MI) event the Angola, IN based team had planned on debuting a new Finish Line Fabricating chassis. Mother Nature had other plans and the car would have to wait a week to see some asphalt. High temps and the chance to meet a NASCAR villain would pack the front stretch grandstands. Toledo was also holding their annual Racer's Reunion featuring several historic coupes, sprint cars, midgets and super modifieds along with some retired drivers. After CRA qualifying these cars would take to the track for some parade laps, much to the thrill of the fans.
Practice would kick off with Brian Ickler hot lapping NASCAR star Kyle Busch's No. 51 NOS Energy super late model. Busch would be qualifying his Cup car, and practicing his Nationwide car over at nearby Michigan International Speedway. The lone Canadian entry, No. 44 of Rick Brown would lose it on the front stretch collecting No. 26 Rick Turner and the inside pit wall. This would end Brown's day, while Turner and the Great Deals crew would repair the heavy right side damage in time for qualifying. The No. 0 entry of Tony Dager would also scratch from the event with mechanical problems during hot laps.

Qualifying would see a new track record of 15.437 by last year's race winner Johnny VanDoorn. After arriving by helicopter Kyle Busch would also break the track record with a 15.494 . Busch would also sign autographs for over an hour after qualifying. Kyle Busch's last appearance at the track would be in 2001, at the age of 16 behind the wheel of a Roush Racing ASA National late model. VanDoorn would draw a 6 for the invert, putting Jeff Lane and JR Roarhig on the front row come race time. Roarhig would pull out to the lead from the first lap, with Lane falling in to second. Busch would pass Turner for third while Hantz pulled into the fifth spot. By lap 11 Lane would fall back to fourth with Hantz and Busch swapping spots while tracking down the leader. On lap 15 in an all too familiar scene at Toledo this season, Busch would slam the outside turn two wall before coming to a rest on the inside of turn three. A broken shock mount would render his Hamke chassis done for the night. On the restart, it would only take seven laps for Hantz to steal the lead from Roarhig, and he would keep it until the checkers. Roahrig would come home second, a late race charge from Boris Yurkovic would net a third, followed by Rick Turner and rookie Nick Diano. Tyler Roahrig, Brent Jack, Kenny Tweedy, Nick Lay and Terry Fisher Jr. completed the top ten.

Trent Stephens balances out bad night at Toledo Speedway
by James MacDonald

TOLEDO, Ohio (Aug. 7) – Ravenna, Ohio racer Trent Stephens would drive his Steve Stout owned No. 19 to Toledo Speedway victory lane. 4 hours earlier teammate Randy Burch would break a left rear axle on his No. 49 during his cool down lap in qualifying smacking the outside turn two wall. This ended his night, and would provide for a bittersweet ending for the Acme Racing teammates and their crew. This would be Stephens 2nd victory of the year after winning at Oswego in May.

After a hour long rain delay, the field of fifteen super modifieds would be led to the green by Bobby Dawson. Early on Stephens would take the lead after starting mid pack. The 30 lap race would run green until lap 23, when the No. 11 of Kyle Edwards would lose a right rear tire. On the restart Stephens would again pull ahead from the pack and take the checkers with a healthy lead. Tim Jedrzejek, Charlie Schultz, Tim Ice, and Bobby Dawson would round out the top five. Heat race winners would be Charlie Schultz and Tim Jedrzejek. During the 2nd heat, No. 12 Brandon Fisher would go up in flames on the backstretch while leading. While unhurt, the car was retired to the trailer.
Andrew Reaume wins opening night of Summer Sizzler at Ohsweken Speedway
By James MacDonald
Ohsweken Speedway

OHSWEKEN, Ont. (July 31) – Andrew Reaume of Blenheim, Ont. scored a $2,000 victory on Awesome Racewear night at Ohweken Speedway. The driver who has dominated at his home track, South Buxton Raceway with 9 consecutive wins, won after leading 22 of 25 laps.

Ed Carley and Brett Reaume led the 17 car field to the green, but a lap one caution slowed the field as Tim MacKenzie hit the backstretch wall, ending his evening. On the restart, Carley pulled ahead, while Andrew Reaume was working his way through the pack. On lap four, Reaume took the lead and never looked back. 12th place starter Chris Ross was on the move, making it to third by lap nine.

Mike Lewis blew a left rear tire on lap sixteen, clipping the inside wall in turn one, sending him to the infield. Back under green, Reaume held off Carley in lapped traffic, while Ross tracked down the top two. On lap twenty-three, Carley pulled off the track after losing an engine. Ross moved into 2nd and got one more chance to catch Reaume after Paul Rivait stopped in turn four to bring out a caution. With one lap to go, Reaume was able to hold on. Ross came across second, followed by Brett Reaume.

Notes: Reaume's No. 88 is sponsored by SM Freight, Westside Performance Plus and Clarke Drainage Contractors. ... Reaume's only other finish this season at Ohsweken was 5th in his B-Main during the WoO show on June 18th.
What is the fastest short track show in the World? It’s lighting fast ISMA Super Modified’s and the always fast AVSS Super Sprints racing on the high banked half mile in Toledo, Ohio. This event is the only ISMA race on the schedule that uses qualifying to determine starting position. After a rainout in 2008 both series were ready to tackle the low 13, high 12’s track records set in 2007. Back in May Frank Kimmel won the ARCA pole with a 16.265 in a stock car. With 27 Supers and 25 Sprints filling the pits the early afternoon crowd had gathered for the once yearly show. ISMA hit the track first and the ‘Rowley Rocket’ Chris Perley took the famed black #11 to the track for a blistering 12.893 second lap, the first sub 13 second lap for a supermodified at Toledo. This also broke Cameron Dodson’s 2007 AVSS record of 12.902. The bragging rights had been won by the East coaster’s in their bad ass lightweight big block machines.

Next up would be the Winged warriors of the AVSS, the series who race out of Michigan and hit tracks in Ohio, Indiana and Ontario as well. Canadian Ryan Litt would start out fast on his qualifying lap, but would only make it into turn one when disaster would strike. Coming out of turn two, the left rear hub would break sending the orange and white #07 Beast chassis spinning hard and fast into the back stretch retaining wall. After losing both wings and taking out the track safety light the OTC, BS&B Radiator sponsored sprinter would come to a stop just past midway on the straight away. With in seconds Ryan would pop out of the car unscathed. Litt had previously told me of how fun it was running Toledo “flat out the whole way round”. After some repairs to the track and cleanup AVSS qualifying would resume. The Dowker powered #42 of Jason Blonde would blister the track with a 12.774 lap reclaiming the title of fastest short track series. The rest of qualifying would be uneventful.

After heat race wins by Mike Ordway Jr., Jeff Holbrook and Trent Stephens all 27 cars would line up for the 50 lap feature. Mike Lichty would lead early, losing the lead to Dave Shullick Jr on lap 29. 1oth place starter Perley would drop back as far as 13th. After a short caution for the #35 of Jeff Holbrook spinning in turns 1 and 2, the field would bunch up on the restart taking out Mark Sammut, Jeff Abold, Johnny Benson Jr.,Vern Romanski and several other cars out of the race. On lap 48 Bobby Bond’s 25 would slam the wall coming out of turn four, at the green Shullick would lose power bunching up the field. 2nd place Lichty would spin, 3rd place Perley would get a flat tire, relegating both cars to the back of the field with 2 remaining. This handed the lead to the Sweet Manufacturing Ltd. #29 of Russ Wood who had been running in the top 5 all night. With 2 to go Wood would claim the top spot at the checkers, followed by Ordway and Perley. Stevens was fourth and Lichty fifth, followed by Randy Burch, Mark Sammut, Rich Reid, Shullick Jr. and Ben Seitz.

Next up was the 30 lap feature for the Super Sprints. Michigan racing veteran Jeff Bloom would start the Eldora Speedway sponsored #26 on pole, with #9 Chad Goff starting 2nd. Bloom would keep the lead the entire race. This doesn’t mean that the race was boring, far from it. On the last lap Goff would pull up on the inside of Bloom who would manage to win by just a few feet. Kyle Flint would come home 3rd, Ryan Davis 4th and Blonde in 5th. Heat race wins would go to Goff, Jeff Banyas and Jimmy McCune. Davis would win the last chance race.

Saturday, May 17, 2009 – Ryan Gillenwater would post his 1st win with the Buckeye Super sprints, a pavement 305 winged sprint car series who race in Ohio, New York and Michigan. Talon Stephens would set fast time of the 10 cars entered at 10.688. Heat race winners were Zach Gibson and Tommy Kunz.

Starting in eighth place, he would take the lead late in the 25 lap feature. After several attempts to get the feature started Tim Buchanan would end up on the hook, and Tyler Dunn would restart from the rear. Chad Wilson would lead from the start, after Tim Buchanan and Dave Saxer would fall out. From then on the race would run green, until lap 17. A spinning Tommy Kunz would bring out the yellow and Gillenwater would restart 3rd behind Chad Wilson and Zach Gibson. With two laps to go he would pass Gibson in turn 3 and 4 and in the next turn pass Wilson for the lead. An elated Gillenwater would celebrate in Flat Rock Victory Lane with his proudest suppporters his mother and father.
That was the question posed to many dirt late model racers in the Buckeye State. The WoO Late Model show for KC Raceway was cancelled, the state had been pounded by rain in the days leading up to this racing weekend and many Saturday night shows had been called on Friday.

Bradford, OH racer and former Lucas Oil rookie of the year Wayne Chinn and crew settled on Oakshade Raceway. This UMP track in the Northwest corner of the state, is a late model heavy track. Drawing 40-50 cars a night is a weekly thing. Chinn had decided to drop off the Lucas Oil series in favor of running more local shows. Since making that decision three weeks ago, Wayne has four wins and a 2nd place finish in 5 races. Not bad stats for 2 weekends of racing. Whether you want to call this Cherry Pickin or not is your call. The dictionary definition states this “the activity of pursuing the most lucrative, advantageous, or profitable among various options and leaving the less attractive ones for others”. My thoughts are we may see more national level drivers do the same thing. This can be a bad thing if you are a local weekly racer who never leaves his home track. I also think running against a guy who has a lot of traveling experience like this week in and week out will help these local drivers. I do not think it guarantees that Wayne will win every show he enters. How many guys run a track weekly, who rarely have a chance of winning, or even making the show? There are no givens in racing, but a lot of work, and luck. Did Wayne ever win any Lucas races, or a dirt late model crown jewel? I have seen a lot of really good drivers/cars wreck in lapped traffic while leading a race. The ALMS regulars will give him some competition, when he races with them. If he keeps winning, I think it will win him have fans and also win him some boo’s. A rivalry is an excellent thing for racing, be it a regional series or something more national. People will want to see him get beat, drivers will want to beat him. No one wins forever, and no one wins every race. I feel it is a good thing, and hope they keep winning. Soon enough that will get boring, and he will move back to racing with a National series.

Actually I shot 14 races, (3 features, 1 consi and 10 heat races). But I did shoot at 2 different tracks, with dirt and asphalt surfaces, late models, modifieds and sprints cars.

I started out my day by travelling to one of my favourite asphalt racetracks, the famed high banked half mile known as Toledo Speedway. I have been going to Toledo for probably 25+ years, although I just started to shoot there in 2006. There was 29 ASA Late Models on hand. 2008 Nationwide Rookie of the Year Landon Cassill was in a Port City Racing house car. Ross Kenseth, 15 year-old son of Matt Kenseth was also in the field, having moved up from Limited Late Models in 2008. The majority of the drivers in this division are from the Northern Illinois, Southern Wisconsin area which is well known for some serious asphalt late model racing. One of the more experienced racers in the field is the driver of the Lisa Thomas Salo, red #8 Monte Carlo Fast Eddie Hoffman of Wheaton, Illinois. I have seen this 2nd generation driver win numerous races. Whether it's at home at Illiana Speedway, down South in Nashville or at Toledo Speedway, Hoffman and the whole TK racing team are a threat to win in the CRA Super Series or the ASA Late Model Series. Griffin McGrath would lead the field to green and hold that spot until spinning into the turn three wall. Hoffman would pit on this caution for some changes to his car, this would prove to be a wise decision. Iowan Landon Cassill would make his way out front in the #61 Port City Racing hot rod with the #25 Bain's Farm and Fleet of Wisconsin driver Ross Kenseth not far behind. On lap 65, the #89 car of Matt Bryne would spin coming out of turn two taking out the 1st and 1nd place cars of Cassill and Kenseth. Cassill would be done for the day, finishing 18th with Kenseth making it back out, finishing 14th several laps down. This would hand the lead over to the #88 of Minnesota driver Trent Snyder who would be eventually tracked down by Hoffman and come home 3rd. The series will be back in action at Illiana Motor Speedway on May 9th.

Also on hand were the USA Modifieds series. This group of die hard modified racers, had 26 cars on hand. Veteran racer Steve Christman would win their 50 lap feature. I did have to leave before this race started, so I do not have much to report on this event.

After leaving Toledo, I took a short 30 minute drive East down the Ohio Turnpike to Fremont Speedway. Now if you have never been to Fremont, it has that PA Posse style of fan. The ones who could watch 4 divisions of sprint cars, 7 nights a week. The Fremont/Attica Sprint Title had started the previous night at Attica Raceway. This is a series that races all summer long on Fridays and Saturdays between the two tracks. 34 410's and 28 305's filled the fairgrounds pits.

The place has a lot of sprint car royalty in the pits. Hall of famer Tim Shaffer, WoO Manzanita winner and former All-Star Champion Chad Kemenah were both present.
