Serbia into first Davis Cup Final

The 2010 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Final will be Serbia v France in the Belgrade Arena, following two dramatic and impressive wins for Serbia’s players. The nation that had not won a World Group tie until March of this year has Novak Djokovic and Janko Tipsarevic to thank for the biggest moment in its country’s tennis history alongside Djokovic’s Australian Open title of 2008 and Ana Ivanovic’s French Open title that same year.

The Serbs’ victory confirms the venue for the final, which will be the Belgrade Arena – it had already been reserved for a home final in case Serbia and France won. And that is exactly what has happened, albeit by two very different routes.

Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) was Serbian born, immigrated to the United States in 1884 and became a U.S. citizen in 1891. Nikola Telsa's inventions make him one of the foremost pioneers in the distribution of electric energy, yet he is relatively unknown. Indeed, Tesla is an unsung creator of the electric age. Without him our current day alternating current (AC) power generation and alternating current (AC) transmission would have been impossible.

Nikola Tesla was also a pioneer in many other fields; the "Tesla Coil" is widely used in radios, television sets and other electronic equipment. Other discoveries led to developments of the fluorescent light, laser beam, neon lights, speedometer, automobile ignition system, wireless communications, remote control, robotics, radar, rotary engines, vacuum tubes, microwave, x-rays, and broadcast power.

FIFA World Cup 2010: Serbia beats Germany 1-0

Milan Jovanovic scored one minute after Germany striker Miroslav Klose was ejected Friday, giving Serbia a 1-0 upset win over the three-time World Cup champions.

In a game with a tournament-high nine yellow cards, Serbia goalkeeper Vladimir Stojkovic stopped Lukas Podolski's penalty kick for Germany in the 60th minute after Nemanja Vidic got a yellow for a hand ball. Germany played a man down from the 37th, when Klose was ejected by Spanish referee Alberto Undiano following his second yellow card.

Jovanovic scored a minute later, controlling a header and firing in a side-foot shot from directly in front of goalkeeper Manual Neuer. The victory gave Serbia its first World Cup win as an independent nation, and both teams now have three points after two games in Group D. Ghana also has three points, and plays its second match - against Australia - on Saturday.

Stojkovic, often considered the weak link on Serbia's team, read Podolski's penalty by diving to his left. After the match, Stojkovic grabbed the game ball and stuck it under his jersey.

The last time Germany failed to convert a non-shootout penalty at a World Cup was in 1974, a miss by Uli Hoeness against Poland.

With both teams using lone strikers, the match turned into a physical, often bruising contest in midfield, with Serbia allowing Germany little space for the kind of flowing, quick-passing moves it used in routing Australia 4-0.

The Germans' best effort came in a hectic end to the first half, when Sami Khedira struck the crossbar and Thomas Mueller's bicycle kick was cleared off the line by Serbian defender Aleksandar Kolarov.

Serbia's goal came after Milos Krasic, giving Germany's defense plenty of work all day, chased a long ball to the sideline and swung a high cross to the far post, where Nikola Zigic headed it down for Jovanovic to volley in. The cross from Krasic caught Germany's tallest defender, Per Mertesacker, out of position.

Milan Stanković (Милан Станковић) competed in Tri pa jedan za Oslo, the Serbian national final for the Eurovision Song Contest 2010. He won the competition and he represented Serbia with the song "Ovo je Balkan" (This is the Balkans). He was one of the ten qualifiers who will go on to compete in the final of the Eurovision Song Contest on next Saturday. Good luck, Milan!!

Milan is a pop and folk singer from Serbia, born September 9, 1987. He started his career taking part in musical contest Zvezde Granda, where he became a favorite of the audience. He entered the super-final and attracted significant media attraction. In addition to performances in the former Yugoslavia territory, he also recorded great success in his performances in Switzerland and USA.

Young people across the region establish fan clubs, send him gifts and letters, and imitate his eccentric clothing style and distinctive hairstyle. Girls from his fan group are known as "Krasive". The excitement around him media and fans call “Milanomania”.

Serbian singer Zeljko Joksimovic won the top prize of the first Balkan Music Awards presented in the Bulgarian capital Sofia late Sunday night. The Balkan Music Awards are organized by the Bulgarian-owned Balkanika Music Television, a cable and satellite television showing music from all Balkan states. The award ceremony was actually a concert open to the public which took place on the Alexander Batenberg Square in downtown Sofia, which attracted thousands of spectators despite the pouring rain. Serbian performer Zeljko Joksimovic received the 2009 Best Song of the Balkans award for his song Ljubavi. He also won the prize for Balkan Singer of the Year. The songs of Albania, Romania, and Bulgaria came in second, third, and fourth, respectively.
