TTC Suspends Token Sales, Introduces Temporary Tickets in Advance of Fare Hike

The TTC has come up with a way to stop token hoarding in its tracks - by suspending token sales outright, immediately, and replacing them in the short-term with temporary adult tickets.

In a rare Sunday press release, the TTC made the announcement, quoting TTC Chair Adam Giambrone:

"TTC riders have been understandably frustrated by the current token restriction. By issuing temporary tickets, the TTC has found a way to allow customers to buy bulk fares in the short term. This announcement today alleviates customer frustrations, and also allows the TTC to ensure it doesn't lose, potentially, millions of dollars in much-needed revenue."

The Best Pies in Toronto

The best pies in Toronto are scattered across the city. Nothing store bought about them either. All the pies offered by the 11 bakeries that made this list are fresh baked daily and all use local ingredients when available. So, while there might be plenty of calories on that pecan or lemon meringue, at least you can feel good about cutting into a pie that supports local farmers.

Toronto Through the Eyes of The Drake Hotel's Jeff Stober

Jeff Stober is expanding his empire. Two weeks from now, on December 5th, the Drake Hotel will mark its first foray outside of West Queen West when a second Drake General Store opens in Rosedale. It's a surprising move (to me anyway). Stober had long been rumoured to have his sights set on Queen East, even though he has repeatedly denied he ever had any interest in revamping what is currently Jilly's stripclub.

The story of Jeff Stober has been well chronicled. At the age of 22 he founded a corporate head hunting firm and then sold his stake for millions in 1998. In 2001 he bought the dilapidated Drake Hotel and sunk an initial $6 million into it by the time it opened in 2004. Despite occasional flares in the neighbourhood, most deriding the Drake for its gentrification of the area or for the influx of 905ers and other non-locals who tend to descend on the lounge or SkyYard every weekend, the Drake is generally considered a huge success and was named the best hotel in Toronto in a recent poll on this site.

Circuit Brings the Online Gallery to Toronto (and Beyond)

<a href="http://www.circuitgallery.com/home"target=_blank>Circuit Gallery is a web-based project co-founded by Claire Sykes and Susana Reisman. Modelled after Jen Bekman's highly successful <a href="http://www.20x200.com/"target=_blank>20x200 concept, it takes advantage of the internet's wide reach and the affordability of digital reproduction to offer editions of contemporary art at wonderfully low prices.

Here's how it works: the art sold through the gallery comes in standard sizes -- like 8x10, 11x14, and 16x20 -- and in limited but large editions (usually around 500). These two factors are then taken into consideration in determining the price of each piece. The smaller the size and the larger the edition, the less expensive the work is -- and, of course, vice versa.

King Tut at the AGO

King Tut has returned to the AGO.

30 years ago, when I was eight, my parents attended the <a href="http://www.humanities-interactive.org/ancient/tut/"target=_blank>Treasures of Tutankhamun exhibit at the <a href="http://www.ago.net/home"target=_blank>Art Gallery of Ontario without me, figuring I was too young and that their evening tickets to the very popular show were past my bedtime. Thankfully they brought home a copy of the catalog, which I read and re-read, again and again. How awesome then, to learn of another chance to see the Tut in person!

Three years in the making, this new show is twice the size of the 1979 one with over 100 antiquities on display. The AGO stop is the only Canadian visit for the tour. I attended a preview of the show on Friday morning and was simply blown away.

Events on Toronto's Radar for SATURDAY NOVEMBER 21 and SUNDAY NOVEMBER 22, 2009... lovingly handpicked from blogTO's events calendar.

Saturday, November 21:

VIDEO GAMES | Gamercamp
If heaven were designed using 8-bit technology, it would look like Gamercamp. The event brings together developers and enthusiasts to celebrate the games that many of us nearly went blind from playing when we were kids. Speakers will look back at how early video games shaped the gaming industry and continue to influence software development, and current developers including Michael Todd from Spyeart will reveal some new projects. Best of all, the day ends with a party of unlimited game play on vintage games from the Replay Arcade Museum. Time to nerd out, people!
Lower Ossington Theatre, 100 Ossington Ave., $20, 1 pm - 9:30 pm

COMEDY | Laughology and the World Laughter Games
This event isn't about comedy, it's about laughter. As Albert Nerenberg's Laughology explains, laughter has the ability to make your stronger, healthier, and even sexier. The documentary that reportedly caused laugh riots when it premiered at Hot Docs examines the phenomenon of contagious laughter and features Doug Collins, the man with the most contagious laugh in the world. Before the screening there will be a demo of competitive laughing, in which two people go head to head with the goal of making the other person seem the funniest.
Bloor Cinema, 506 Bloor St. W., $8, 7 pm

MUSIC | Bonjay EP Release Party
Dance hall duo Bonjay finally release their debut record Gimme Gimme tonight after years of playing live shows that teased us with their potential. Bonjay only has one goal when they play, and that's to get everybody real sweaty, real fast. The relatively confined space of Terranga is a perfect place for the release party, and no doubt the pair will bring their big, spicy, West-Indian beats. Poirier and Valeo open.
Terranga African Restaurant, 159 Augusta Ave., $8, 10 pm

Saturday Brew: Toronto's Human Egg Market, York University BRT Opens, Cameron House for Sale, Leaf Request, ROM Crystal Among Ugliest Buildings

Photo: "Fuzzy Memory" by <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/pjmixer/4112218661/in/pool-26909951@N00"target=_blank>PJMixer, member of the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/blogto/pool/"target=_blank>blogTO Flickr pool.

What's happening in the GTA (and sometimes beyond):

This week's entry in what appears to be an ongoing investigative journalism feature in the Saturday Star examines <a href="http://www.parentcentral.ca/parent/babiespregnancy/pregnancy/article/728915--hatching-babies-our-black-market-in-human-eggs"target=_blank>Toronto's black market in human eggs. Unlike the States, Canada has banned the sale of such eggs, leaving would-be parents with fertility problems to rely on the limited supply provided by altruistic donors. Or Craigslist. There is, of course, a host of problems associated with the unregulated sale of of such a sensitive "product" (which can cost up to $10 000), but those desperate to conceive have few other options within the current system.

Yesterday saw <a href="http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/ttc/article/728922--the-rocket-to-york-u-gets-a-lane"target=_blank>the opening of the York University BRT, which uses the hydro corridor north of Finch to shuttle passengers between Dufferin and Keele streets away from traffic. Although it's estimated that the BRT, which also uses dedicated lanes on campus and a special exit ramp from Downsview station, will shave up to 14 minutes off the previous trip time, I'm pretty sure this'll only be true during the height of rush hour. Having had a chance to ride it yesterday, I have to say that at 3 p.m. it wasn't more than a couple of minutes faster than normal. Maybe it was my bus driver, who was plodding along at a painful pace.

The Cameron House, a staple of the Queen West arts scene, <a href="http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/toronto/the-cameron-house-on-the-market/article1372297/"target=_blank>is up for sale. Owners Cindy Matthews, Paul Sannella and Anne-Marie Ferraro hope they can find a buyer sympathetic to the role the Cameron has played in helping local artists and musicians gain both a sense of community and exposure. As their listing reads, "the hippest neighbourhood in the city awaits your style and imagination." That sounds a lot like a condo ad, and I have my suspicions that that's exactly what might eventually replace the arts hub.

WW2-Era Downsview Hangars to be Saved? A (Possible) Happy Ending to a Heritage Battle

For the first time in a very long time, a story about architectural heritage looks like it might have a happy - and relatively swift - ending. Nearly a month ago, two WW2-era airplane hangars on what was once an active air force base in Downsview began to be demolished, but thanks to their prominent location, they got noticed by the right people.

Built by De Havilland of Canada in the final years of the war, the two massive airplane hangars were once located among farms, miles away from Toronto's city limits, but today they're near the intersection of Dufferin and Sheppard streets, just north of the 401 and west of the Allen Expressway, just across the street from the Downsview terminus of the Spadina subway line. They're hard to miss, and it's no surprise that they caught the attention of Paul Oberman, a property developer notable for his willingness to take on and restore heritage properties.

Call & Response: Nitin

Nitin is a Toronto-based house/techno DJ/producer who has been moving up the international ranks thanks to his new Silent Scales EP on local underground label No. 19. Renowned producer Osunlade lends his popular touch to Nitin's new track which has been played by some of the biggest names in electronic music.

Nitin is part of an amazing underground tech house movement going on in the city right now. Quality events are being put on by people dedicated to making every night count - and top international talent are pouring into this scene.

Nitin is DJing three big events this week alongside M.A.N.D.Y. (last night), Audion (aka Matthew Dear from Detroit), and Cassy (from Berlin). I spoke to Nitin about these big gigs, his influences, and his neighbourhood.

Ad Man Terry O'Reilly on Marketing Toronto, Illegal Advertising and Russell "Cashman" Oliver

I don't watch a lot of Citytv programming but when I do I inevitably get nailed with a Cashman commercial. You know, the one with the dancing girls, club beats and aging Russell "Cashman" Oliver wanting to trade cash for my used gold and jewellery. His ads have been running for years and actually have garnered him a fair amount of publicity including an interview on CBC last year when DC Comics sued him for one that had a Superman theme.

His ads keep appearing which means they must be successful enough for him to keep paying his bills. When Terry O'Reilly, famed ad man on CBC Radio's the Age of Persuasion spoke at Marketing Week in Toronto last week I fugured he'd be the perfect person to ask about them. Keep reading for our Q&A in which we discuss these ads plus other salient Toronto advertising related topics like marketing the city, ad creep and the influx of illegal advertising.

Radar: November 20, 2009

Photo: "Korean Fried Dumpling" by Pete A. McLeod, member of the blogTO Flickr Pool.

Events on Toronto's Radar for FRIDAY NOVEMBER 20, 2009... lovingly handpicked from blogTO's events calendar.

FASHION | R4 Fashion
Style and eco-consciousness come together in this event put on by the University of Waterloo's Sustainable Technology Education Project. Some of Canada's top fashion designers including Carrie Hayes, Sonja den Elzen and Rachel Jasmine Chan will present designs that are as sustainable as they are sexy. The event brings together students, young professionals, industry leaders and fashionistas with the goal of finding eco-friendly technologies for the fashion industry.
Atlantis Pavillion, 955 Lakeshore Blvd. W., $25 - $70, 8 pm

GALLERY | 52 McCaul Grand Opening "$20"
A new gallery opens tonight in the art-rich neighbourhood centred around the AGO. 52 McCaul aims to be a different kind of artspace; a cultural hub that will connect local artists with the community and will feature work from both experienced and emerging artists (and everyone in between). At their grand opening tonight you'll have a chance to buy a wide variety of works each for the very reasonable price of $20, with all proceeds going to fund the gallery. The new gallery is a joint initiative by grassroots art organization Well and Good and curators Teresa Aversi and Charlie Irani.
52 McCaul St., Free admission, 7 pm - 12 am

EXHIBITION | The Everything To Do With Sex Show
This weekend the ETDWSS will be stimulating the body and soul (but mostly the body) at Exhibition Place with all the best of everything related to getting it on. A fashion show and carnival parade, body spray art demonstrations, seminars on how to find the perfect sex toy, and even a full scale dungeon are but some of the highlights that have made this one of the biggest shows of its kind in the world. Sure to be a very naughty weekend. Runs til Sunday.
Direct Energy Centre, 100 Princes Blvd., $20-$25 single day, $27.50-$35 weekend pass, Friday 3 pm - 12 am, Saturday 11 am - 12 am, Sunday 11 am - 6 pm

Morning Brew: TTC Faces Tough Questions, Choosing Campaign Issues, Big Retail Discounts, New TFC Coach, Dunlap Observatory Trees Plowed, Leafs Hit New Low

Photo: "Hot Dog On Xpro" by Metrix X, member of the blogTO Flickr pool.

What's happening in the GTA (and sometimes beyond):

In their awful week, the TTC tried to ensure all blame for the Yonge Street subway shutdown was placed with Enbridge and their contractor, but now Enbridge is pushing back, saying the City of Toronto authorized the work. But the transit agency can't just focus there, they're also getting questions about why collectors let customers pay their fare without informing them they couldn't get on a train or get as far as they needed. Basically, the week just gets worse for the Red Rocket.

Councillor Joe Mihevc wants us to talk about issues, not just who's running for mayor next year, and is even having a public meeting next week to figure out which issues are on peoples' minds. He went so far as to set up a Setting the Agenda 2010 website so we can all discuss. Seems a laudable goal, but will people participate?

The American school of before-Christmas sales and discounts seems to be migrating north in the face of the sad worldwide economy. Look for Sears and Wal-Mart to start a big head-to-head price war: Sears is offering Boxing Day prices all weekend while Wal-Mart has a price reduction strategy that will see 18,000 prices drop in November. Small, independent retailers won't like this news, but none of the Canadian retailers will be happy if Canadians head to the U.S. for American Thanksgiving next week with such strong Canadian currency in hand to take advantage of the traditionally deep discounts.

Metro Cover Featuring Cartoon Editorial on TTC Fare Hike Sparks Controversy

An editorial cartoon by Michael De Adder on the cover of the November 18th issue of the Metro has got the head of the Toronto transit workers union all hot and bothered. According to Bob Kinnear, the cartoon, which depicts a streetcar operator picking the pocket of a pedestrian bystander, places the blame for the recently announced fare increase on front line TTC workers rather than the commission's management or insufficient government funding.

Kinnear is thus worried that it threatens the safety of his local 113 members, who already suffer increased instances of physical abuse in the wake of fare hike announcements. "It will provoke active animosity in some unbalanced passengers and lead to more assaults. We've been down this road too many times before to let this pass," he reasons.

But is it really that bad? And does it actually lay the blame for the fare increase on the TTC's streetcar operators and other highly visible staff?

The Best Chinese Restaurants in Toronto

The best Chinese restaurants in Toronto tend to be found on Dundas, Spadina or north of the 401. In fact, it has become conventional wisdom that to get the best szechuan, Cantonese or other variation of Chinese food in the city a trip to Markham or Thornhill is all but essential.

In downtown Toronto there are three main destinations for Chinese cuisine - the original Chinatown on Dundas between Bay and University, the largest Chinatown on Spadina on and around Dundas and the often overlooked East Chinatown near Broadview and Gerrard. All three areas are represented on this list. For the best chinese restaurants outside of the downtown core keep an eye out on this site for a separate best of list later this year.
