Meet Matt. End of last year, when we taught on the topic of relationships in our Discipleship Training School, he was sitting in on the classes as a visitor. During that time, God spoke to him about long term missions. When he returned back to the UK he called his realtor and his boss from the airport, leaving a lucrative security consulting job. He sold his apartment and within weeks got back here to do the Discipleship Training School as a student. That’s his starting point in missions. Kind of reminds you of the way the disciples would “drop their nets” and follow Jesus? De Wet now has weekly mentorship meetings with him during his school. Our experience gives us authority to influence new missionaries like Matt. In the long view of history, that’s pretty cool!

We are excited to share with you that we are teaming up with Bridge for Hope, a local community development ministry. They have asked De Wet to start their computer training program. For February and March, he will is doing everything from setting up a 15-seat computer lab to teaching the first course while mentoring and preparing the long term trainer (who we will introduce in another snapshot). It is a great fit, combining his computer expertise and teaching background. Our Mobile team will be teaching Bible Overview in the evenings after the computer classes finish. So its job skills development alongside Biblical worldview, great synergy!

Braai is a South African term for what some might know as a bar-b-que. Its technically so much more than a bar-b-que. Its a slow relaxed time where people hang out and wait for meat to cook over a fire. Its a deeply embedded part of the culture; a national pastime. Last weekend we hosted a braai at a local park to connect in an informal way with the pastors and their wives that we work with. A key to ministry in Africa is prioritizing relationship over task. Food helps too!

Last week Marysol started leading a 6 week study through the book “Mentor Like Jesus” with a handful of people committed to learning how to become a better mentor. Every Wednesday morning, at 7:30 am this group gathers for an hour while De Wet handles the children. Mentorship and walking alongside people is an important aspect of our ministry here. Her goal is to get more people equipped to actively mentor others. The book is one we recommend as it explores the style of Jesus: group mentorship. Here’s a great review on it. When you think of the most significant thing Jesus did in 3 years of ministry: He mentored 12 guys that changed the world!

Just when the enemy taunts us with doubt, people give generously and surprisingly. God is so faithful. As of today, we’ve had $5,785 come in!!!

Keep praying, we only have $3,215 to go. We are just shy of two-thirds of the way there! This is incredible.

And here’s how to give or point others to do so.

Chris, the author guest blogged for us a while back.

Be sure to check back as I write the follow up to this post: Suggestions for unplugging. You can subscribe to his blog to not miss it there.

2. Have a look through the archives. We aren’t afraid to keep it real on all kinds of topics: missions, marriage, parenting, leadership, what our house looks like, and a day in our life here.

3. Project Wheels: Currently, we are in the thick of fundraising for a new car to reach the communities God has called us to and be able to bring along more workers (not to mention our kids too). Maybe God brought you to this blog today for a reason and you are part of the answer? We are actually praying God will send us complete strangers or friends of friends to help make this happen. Check out our super short video.

A glimpse at a key part of life here: electricity! This is not what all electrical poles look like, but this is a compelling image Marysol captured. Many people ask, “So you live in Africa, do you have running water & electricity?” YES! However, electricity issues are a bit different here. A couple of years ago the country ran out of electricity and it was being turned off every couple days in different regions. As a response, the prices have almost tripled and there was a nation wide campaign to educate people to use less. We are conscious to not waste the electricity needlessly (hanging clothes to dry or turning off our hot water heater everyday). This did temporarily solve the problem. With this blessing of stable electricity, we are able to be much more effective, not to mention, communicate with you!
