What organization do you work with? That’s a question we are asked often. Here is the answer: We are full time staff with Youth With A Mission (YWAM) in Muizenberg (an area outside of Cape Town). That’s a picture of our training campus. YWAM Muizenberg focuses on evangelism, training and mercy ministries. We run schools that train on the Bible, church planting, discipleship, and teaching. Ministries that do community development, combat human trafficking, and reach children in need. Evangelism and discipleship amongst Muslims, the homeless, college students, refugees. That’s just naming a few areas. With over 100+ full time staff, we work all over the city and doing dynamic full time missions. Its an awesome community to be a part of!

While we are away we want to take the opportunity to highlight some of the wonderful ministries that we get to interact with in South Africa. Sibongile is a full time care centre for children with mental and physical handicaps. Started by a local lady named Nomasango after her daughter passed away from Cerebral Palsy. YWAM missionaries (some of our closest friends) have come alongside Nomansango and served the care centre with fund raising, medical, administration, physical therapy, and grant requests which has enabled them to move the care centre from a shipping container into several beautiful homes. The way they have served is a great example of how to bless the locals with their skills without coming in as foreigners and taking over. (Marysol took these photos at one of their annual gatherings.)

Our president in South Africa got married again! This time to his girlfriend of 11 years with whom he shares a 7 year old son. Its his 6th marriage. One of his wives passed away, one divorced him, and so this woman makes #4 of women he is currently married to. If you had to read that twice, its not a riddle. In South Africa polygamous marriage is legal. Although a survey in 2010 found that nearly three-fourths of South Africans disapprove of it. This is his second marriage since becoming president in 2009. And if you are wondering if he’s done, he alluded to that recently: Looking into his new wife’s eyes, he said she could expect more wives. “Those who came before you didn’t close the door on you and no one closed the door on them. So I expect you to do the same.” You can imagine the messages this sends to young men across this country we work in.

This week’s snapshot comes from 35,000 feet over the Atlantic. We arrived in America after a grueling trip with toddlers on our laps. This is the last opportunity we have to travel with them free (because they are under 2 years old). While we are in town we will be spending time with family & friends, connecting with partners and churches, and doing alot of normal life things that we can’t get done out of country, like renewing drivers licenses.  We are often asked what is it like to come home from the field? We ran across this article by another missionary in South Africa that really took the words out of our mouth. A worthwhile read!

We just finished hosting the International Consultation of Titus Project. This happens every 3 years in a different location. This time South Africa was chosen. (Yay, we didn’t have to travel!) It was a fruitful time of seeking God for vision, discussing resource development, and strategizing multiplying locations in our regions. It was also just refreshing to connect with our “tribe”, likeminded people who understand so much because they are doing the same job in other countries. In the last 15 years, we reached our goal of establishing Titus in every inhabited continent of the earth. We also celebrated reaching 62 nations with Biblical training…. 15 of those in Africa!

Our computer school graduates! Stretching their minds to grasp brand new concepts. Working long hours to practice and solidify their new skills. We recently graduated all 28 students. Every one of them scored well on the administered test and I can confidently say that all of them have basic computer skills as their certificates claim. Many of them asked to put me down as a reference on job applications. Over the last 10 years I (De Wet) have filled in countless reference forms for people applying for fulltime missionary positions, but this is an exciting new season where I will be advocating for someone’s ability to do a job that directly provides for their family and enables them to be generous. Pray that God provides them great jobs!

When our students are done with their computer classes in the day, they switch to Bible Overview courses in the evening. A holistic approach to their job skills training: learning about Biblical worldview and the story of the entire Bible. To make sure they want to be there, we make it optional. We’ve also opened it up to anyone from the community to join. Its an interesting dynamic, from involved church-goers to non-believers all in one room!
