This is wrong.

Wikipedia states in their Social Media article:

Social media is online content created by people using highly accessible and scalable publishing technologies.

Wikipedia also states in their Social Networking article:

A social network service focuses on building online communities of people who share interests and/or activities, or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others.

So, social media is a practice that can be done within social networking. Social networking is NOT social media. This is very distinct. Blogs are a just one way to spread content online. They are very much a part of social media. In farming terms, to blog is to sow, and to share it on any social network is to watch your blog grow with readers.

That is not cool. At least in those applications on the other social networks, you know that it is just a game (except for the few that get a bit psycho and do anything, including threatening your life…believe me, I have seen it.) However, with Twitter, all of these outside applications are not affiliated with Twitter. Twitter was originally dedicated for people to constructively connect with each other.

Applications to send roses or beers or some friendly item have been great to see, but to see one that attacks other tweeps – that is not being friendly. On top of that, the site is a follow train. In case you all were not aware, the twitter follow trains MIGHT work for a week, but you pretty much signed yourself up to an auto-spammer.

What do you think about such sites? Are there others that you are disturbed to see that are focused on attracting Twitter users?

The portfolios allow you to load images outside your DeviantArt account or add from your account. You can also insert your resume and any information for potential clients to know like live links to previous work. One thing I found and I actually posted about it, was that you can only load certain sizes. This means you will have to enlarge your logos, if you are a person that creates logos.

Other things you get to do is register your own domain and point your domain to the servers that DeviantArt lists. Otherwise, you can use a custom subdomain URL. Mine is http://blondishnet.daportfolio.com/. As you can see it is very plain as you can only choose black or white. Also, the images in the screenshots area do not appear, and of course, I could not load my logos.

Needs a lot of work, and I think that since people pay already, they should get to customize their portfolio further with css. I really am not impressed. I am just going to continue on my plan to revamp my own portfolio. However, it did not hurt to at least check it out. At least I can give some credit for DeviantArt for trying, but I think something better can be done. I believe DeviantArt forgot what a portfolio was in the first place. A portfolio is a way to allow a person to put their work up for display with their best effort. These will not suffice as they are as plain as paper (sorry for the cliché.)

This cute and yummy looking pixel emoticon is one of several that Kao-Ani offers for download. Each look to be inspired by Japanese anime style characters and a little of the creator’s (Natasja) love of pixelling and cuteness. Other smileys available at Kao-Ani are in the form of animals, girl faces, and even a ghost! Yes, these may be girly, but anyone can see these are quality smileys are worth showcasing.

Sidney Collins of BubblesSOC, also knowns as Bubs, offers a very simple smiley set for those who like simple. It is a variation of typing out anime smiley faces while chatting with others. Example: (o_O). However, some of them are animated and have a few extras. My favorite out of the set is the animated angry emoticon where it is shaking its head with disappointment, and looks quite disgruntled.

DeviantArt user, darkmoon3636 is pretty notorious when it comes to making emoticons. A lot of this graphic artist’s work is used on DeviantArt. Each smiley is unique and some even have scenes like the surfing emoticon. Some are animated. The artist allows her emoticons to be used anywhere only if credit is given.

This graphic artist, LeoLeonardo hails from Deviantart too and named The Emoticon Pope. A lot of detail goes into some of the scenes that involve emoticons. One is an emoticon jumping off a building and there is a Rick Roll smiley too! The Emoticon Pope even gives pointers to others on how to make emoticons. This artist has created more than a hundred different emoticons. Just imagine the time spent on all of them. I would like to say – All Hail The Emoticon Pope!

MazeGuy has a lot of different pixel smilies like Mario, symbols, animals, and more. MazeGuy even has an emoticon balloon maker where you can put what you want your smilies to say in a speach bubble. This allows you to feel like you had a hand in making your own emoticons! Mike Perucci, the site owner, even has written a smiley tutorial of his own.
