Bloomberg to Air Special Report 'Women to Watch'

Bloomberg are to air a one-hour special report at 9pm ET on 1st October, called 'Women to Watch' addressing the Kleiner Perkins sex discrimination lawsuit, work-life integration and why more women aren't entering the field.

While high-profile hires at Yahoo! and Facebook made headlines this year, special correspondent Willow Bay reports that women represent just 3% of startups and 14% of computer science degrees.

"The willingness to fund women is there. It's that there aren't enough women actually trying for that," says Jessica Herrin, founder, Stella & Dot.

The four women who make up the roundtable include:

Bloomberg Television Announces 2012 National Convention Coverage

Starting on Monday, August 27th, Bloomberg Television will broadcast live from the Bloomberg Link convention headquarters at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, FL and the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, NC.

The network will feature an all-star line-up of reporters, analysts and contributors at the conventions to closely examine the key economic issues driving the race for the White House. The team will include Bloomberg Washington editor Al Hunt, Bloomberg Television political analyst Matthew Dowd, Bloomberg View columnist Margaret Carlson, White House correspondents Hans Nichols and Julianna Goldman, along with chief Washington correspondent Peter Cook and Washington correspondent Meghan Hughes. “Street Smart” anchor Trish Regan will host Bloomberg Television’s primetime specials, focusing on “The Economy Election.”

Regan will anchor “Street Smart” each afternoon from the conventions from 3-5 PM/ET. In addition, Charlie Rose will host his nightly program for PBS and Bloomberg Television from the Bloomberg Link.

Lisa Murphy Leaves Bloomberg Television

Merrill Knox of TVNewser.com reports that Bloomberg Television anchor Lisa Murphy has left the organization.

Knox reports, “‘Given some of the recent changes in Lisa’s personal life and the recent changes here at Bloomberg, we mutually decided this would be an appropriate time to part ways,’ a Bloomberg spokesperson said. ‘We wish Lisa all the best.’

“Bloomberg TV cut 30 staffers last month in preparation for the network’s shift to a digital newsroom, although the spokesperson said Murphy’s departure was unrelated to those layoffs.

“There is no word on future plans for Murphy, who joined Bloomberg in October 2010 from the Fox-owned local station in New York. Going forward, a rotation of Bloomberg anchors will join Trish Regan and Adam Johnson on ‘Street Smart,’ which airs daily from 3-5pmET.”

Murphy came from a New York TV station. She had returned to school and in 1999 received her MBA from Columbia Business School. Upon graduation, she began working for JP Morgan where she spent time in credit derivatives and private banking.

Murphy also worked as chief of staff to the CEO of Citigroup’s Global Wealth Management. The role allowed for an up-close perspective on the challenges of running one of the largest global banks in the world.

Bloomberg Still Battling Comcast about Bloomberg TV Placement

Bloomberg LP has filed another complaint with the Federal Communications Commission against Comcast Corp., claiming that the cable giant is thumbing its nose at conditions the government put on it as part of approving its 2011 takeover of NBCUniversal, the parent of CNBC.

Joe Flint of the Los Angeles Times writes, “At issue is where Bloomberg’s business news channel is located on Comcast-owned cable systems in relation to Comcast’s own channels CNBC and MSNBC. Bloomberg has claimed that a condition of the merger requires Comcast to move Bloomberg to the same ‘neighborhood’ as its own CNBC and MSNBC channels.

“‘We need a passport to get to the news neighborhood from where we are now,’ cracked Greg Babyak, head of government Affairs for Bloomberg LP.

“Comcast has countered that the FCC’s conditions only apply if Comcast were to start placing similar channels next to each other on the dial, a practice known as ‘neighborhooding.’

“In its latest FCC filing, Bloomberg claimed Comcast has done just that. It cited two markets — Crescent City, Fla., and Claxton, Ga. — where Comcast created a neighborhood of news channels but left out Bloomberg Television.

“‘Comcast is favoring its own programming content and discriminating against competitors,’ Bloomberg attorneys told the FCC.

“A spokeswoman for Comcast denied that the company has created any new news neighborhoods since the NBCUniversal transaction closed last year.”

Two Leave Bloomberg TV's London Operation

Merrill Knox of TVNewser is reporting that an anchor and a producer have left Bloomberg Television’s London operations.

Knox writes, “Anchor Andrea Catherwood and producer Gary Kanofsky have both left Bloomberg TV’s London bureau.

“A Bloomberg spokesperson confirmed the departures, saying they are not related to a round of layoffs Bloomberg announced last week.

“Kanofsky’s departure comes just eight months after he joined the network as senior executive producer. Catherwood, the host of “The Last Word” on Bloomberg Europe, joined the network from ITV News in 2009.”

John Nyaradi: Let’s talk a little bit about your work at Bloomberg, you have done some great things there – you are founder of the chart of the day on Bloomberg Professional, can you talk just a little about that, what its about?

Tom Keene: Oh, years ago, Matt Winkler, our editor-in-chief, came to me and asked me that to put together a chart of the day. So I worked it up with my limited journalistic skills and, to be honest, I don’t remember what the first chart was, but we put it out about 1 pm and I got a phone call from the head of prop trading for JP Morgan, maybe 3 pm the same day, and she said, can we use it in our meetings this afternoon. So I said, by all means, and really with that we were off to the races.

John Nyaradi: Let’s talk about your two shows. I like Bloomberg a lot, I go there all the time. Let’s talk about “Surveillance Midday” on the television side and “Bloomberg Surveillance” on the radio side.

Tom Keene: Well, they are very different. I think “Bloomberg Surveillance” is wake up in the morning, where are the markets, talk to smart people, and “Surveillance Midday” is designed to be that 12 noon interlude in the market where – hey, here is where the markets are and we again try to talk to smart people. But the hallmark of my work is a belief that the audience is smarter than the media thinks. Our audiences are global Wall Street and the informed non-Wall Street, and they’re all very, very smart about investing. They read everything, they study everything, they’re in the market, and our other audience is what I call the curious and informed professionals. And the one thing that all three groups have in common is they are smart, and what we do is, if we get a little esoteric like sterilized QE, we will define that, we will explain what we are talking about, but we really try in both shows not to talk down to the audience. We just assume they are smart, they are in the game, they are informed so we can get to the important distinctions and the better questions quickly.

Bloomberg TV Cuts 30 Staffers, Plans to Add Digital Jobs

Chris Ariens of TV Newser reports that Bloomberg Television laid off 30 staffers who were reporters, producers, associate producers, editors and other staffers this morning as the company shifts to a digital-centric newsroom.

Ariens writes, “As TV employees are cut, Bloomberg plans to add 13 new positions and create a Digital Video Desk focused on moving video productions to web platforms, including tablets, smartphones and desktops. Among those let go, Cris Valerio, a San Francisco-based technology reporter and host of the weekly show ‘Venture,’ which was canceled last year.

“The shift has been in the works since Andrew Morse joined as head of Bloomberg TV last summer. Morse spent 15 years at ABC News, most recently at ABC News digital. In an email to staff, obtained by TVNewser, Morse writes that while ‘new positions’ will be added, ‘we have also had to remove some positions that are no longer aligned with digital newsgathering and production.’

“Of the new jobs, to be posted soon, there are six new positions for digital producers and digital strategists, leaving a net loss of about 15 positions.

“During the last staff cuts at Bloomberg in early 2009, more than 100 employees from the Radio and TV, including 45 at Bloomberg’s New York City headquarters, were laid off. Those cuts were overseen by then head of Bloomberg TV David Rhodes who is now president of CBS News.”

The new offering, available in June, will offer advertisers the ability to localize insertions to reach this key business market.

Alessandra Stanley of the New York Times reviewed the new Bloomberg Television show “Titans at the Table” and noted that by the third glass of wine, the Wall Streeters were much more loquacious.

Stanley writes, “Bloomberg TV looks a lot like its two rivals, CNBC and Fox Business News — overcaffeinated anchors, pulsating stock tickers and fast-moving news crawls — but has a different sensibility.

“CNBC, perhaps reflecting the liberal bent of its sister cable channel, MSNBC, has a Jacobin streak that plays out in documentaries with titles like ‘House of Cards’ and ‘Filthy Rich‘ that target insider trading, subprime mortgage bundling, Ponzi schemes, Wall Street bankers and foreign plutocrats.

“Fox Business News leans toward Fox News. A recent report on the rising price of oil was illustrated with a finger-wagging calculation of how much President Obama’s fuel expenditures are costing the taxpayer when he travels on Air Force One: $179,000 a flight. The anchor scornfully suggested the president fly Southwest Airlines.

“Bloomberg TV, which gives information away, is, almost by definition, the opposite of Bloomberg L.P., its parent company. Before he became New York’s mayor, Michael R. Bloomberg, built that billion-dollar empire on terminals that provide arcane financial data and complex analysis to big-time subscribers.

Todd Baer Named Executive Producer for Bloomberg TV Mongolia

Todd Baer has joined Bloomberg as Executive Producer for Bloomberg TV Mongolia, announced Parry Ravindranathan, Business Head for Bloomberg Television in Asia.

Baer will lead the creation of locally produced, local language content for Bloomberg TV Mongolia. The network, headquartered in Ulan Bator, is scheduled to launch in April 2012 in partnership with The Trade & Development Bank of Mongolia (TDB).

Baer brings over 14 years of experience as an Emmy Award-winning journalist and television news trainer in markets around the world, including India and Pakistan. Bloomberg Television Names Dan Arnall as Executive Producer of News

Veteran business news journalist Dan Arnall has joined Bloomberg as Executive Producer of News for Bloomberg Television.

The announcement was made by Andrew Morse, head of Bloomberg TV in the U.S.

Arnall brings more than a decade of experience covering the economy, American business and the impact of financial regulation, among other major stories. Based in New York, he will oversee Bloomberg's television newsgathering and editorial in the U.S. Arnall will also work to integrate video content across the company's multimedia properties including Bloomberg.com and Bloomberg Mobile, which together reach millions of users per day.

Variety: Do you think people will get more interested in the economy as the campaign moves forward?

Regan: The horse race is very interesting; people vote their pocketbooks, and it’s going to come down to who they believe has the best economic policy. [For a reporter,] it’s an opportunity to really scrutinize at a very detailed level. That’s the responsible thing to do as a journalist; as a financial journalist, that’s the skill set that I bring to the table. [...] I’m going to do a new segment on the show called Reganomix, to sort of mix it up and talk about these different policies.

Variety: It sounds like fun, honestly.

Regan: Maybe I’m a bit of a wonk and a dork, but I really enjoy it. In an election year, we’re looking at everything through an economic lens. Just look at this past year, all the volatility was incredible, and we ended up at exactly the same point at the end of the day. All the concerns came from the downgrade of the US debt, and [the question of] what’s going to happen next in Europe.

Bloomberg TV Hires CNBC Producer for Trish Regan Show

In an email to staff, Ted Fine, the executive producer of afternoon programming at Bloomberg Television, announced that the network has hired Jason Farkas from CNBC to work on 'Street Smart' which will be presented by recent hire, ex-CNBC presenter Trish Regan.

Fine said in his email; "I’m thrilled to announce that Jason Farkas is joining Bloomberg Television as Senior Broadcast Producer. Jason will be my deputy across all afternoon programming. His first focus is helping the ‘Street Smart’ team as we re-launch with the addition of Trish Regan.

"Jason comes to Bloomberg Television from CNBC where he was Senior Producer of CNBC SportsBiz, and Trading the Globe, CNBC’s first program dedicated to emerging market investing. Before that he one of the founding producers of Fast Money, and part of the team that launched Options Action, Money in Motion, Strategy Session, and the Fast Money Halftime Report.

Bloomberg Television Signs Trish Regan

Bloomberg Television announced Monday it has signed Trish Regan, former CNBC anchor and CBS News correspondent, as an anchor.

Regan will co-anchor Bloomberg TV’s “Street Smart” which will air from 3-5 pm ET weekdays from Bloomberg Television’s global headquarters in New York, beginning Jan. 9. She will also anchor a number of prime time specials and help lead anchor coverage of the 2012 Presidential election campaign for Bloomberg TV.

“Trish is an accomplished broadcast journalist and skilled reporter who has covered some of the most important global economic stories of our time,” said Andrew Morse, head of Bloomberg Television in the U.S., in a statement. “She’ll play a key role on our Bloomberg team as we move forward with our goal of becoming the most influential business and financial news network.”

An Emmy-nominated investigative journalist and author, Regan was previously an anchor at CNBC, where she also anchored prime time documentaries and reported on major economic news, including the U.S. banking collapse of 2008 and the European debt crisis.

Among other stories, Regan reported from the G-8 summit in Germany, covered Brazil’s economic boom and challenges, and interviewed Colombian President Álvaro Uribe about investing in emerging markets. Regan also was a regular contributor to NBC’s “Nightly News with Brian Williams,” the “Today” show, and the syndicated “Chris Matthews Show.”

Lopez writes, “We spoke to the Surveillance host about his reading list last week, and no surprise, it’s extensive.

“Sure, he reads Wall Street research, social media, and nationally syndicated Op-Eds just like you and I do, but he also has another trick up his sleeve:

“‘One mistake people make is that they refuse to read accessible text books and things that are major advances,’ he said.

“So yeah, text books.

“Keene also shared his seasonal reads with us. For the winter he’s all over Daniel Kahneman’s Thinking Fast and Slow, and his book for the fall was Michael Spence’s, The Next Convergence: The Future of Economic Growth in a Multispeed World.”

Put simply, what exactly do you do and how’d you end up there?

I am a journalist and anchor of a two hour live global broadcast everyday on Bloomberg TV.

My show – called “InBusiness with Margaret Brennan” – is a daily snapshot of the top financial issues on Wall Street, Main Street, K Street and the global markets.

I joined Bloomberg TV in July 2009 as an anchor after spending 7 years as a reporter and before than a producer at CNBC. I studied Foreign Affairs and Middle East studies at the University of Virginia and minored in Arabic language. I thought that I’d work in diplomacy but ended up in TV after interning at CNN one summer.

I joined TV news because I like being in the middle of the world as it is changing. For me, financial news is more than decimal points and earnings reports. To paraphrase Sec. Clinton, economic strength is more of a determination of influence than military might in today’s world. In this country the election will be decided on whether Americans have jobs and opportunity. And outside the U.S., arguably the fate of 500 million Europeans and the rest of the global economy rests on the shoulders of two women: Germany’s Angela Merkel and the IMF’s Christine Lagarde. All of these narratives and currents excite me. Those are the ideas that get me excited every day.

Guy Johnson Joins Bloomberg Television in London

Bloomberg Television has today announced that former CNBC presenter Guy Johnson is to join the network as its new London-based anchor.

Prior to joining Bloomberg, Johnson spent the last 14 years as a lead presenter at CNBC in London, most recently anchoring "European Closing Bell". Earlier in his career he also held positions at ITN (Channel 5) and Financial Times Television reporting on global financial and business activity.

Malcolm Fried, head of Bloomberg Television in Europe says: “Guy has a great deal of relevant experience and is a strong addition to the Bloomberg Television presenting team here in Europe. He's covered many major global economic and corporate events, interviewed countless political and business leaders and his experience of covering the rapidly moving developments in the eurozone will enhance our current output."

Guy Johnson adds: "At a time of such extraordinary tension in the global economy, my move to Bloomberg is an incredible opportunity.
