As I’ve mentioned before, this music really took a lot of blood and sweat to put together, but thankfully no tears. More than any music I’ve ever produced before, the music on this EP just seemed to flow out of me with very little strain, just a lot of “footwork” in getting everything together. In a nutshell, this process was a prototype for how I’d like music making to happen for me as I move forward. Releasing this track and all of the mixes has been a process of over a year in the making, so I really do hope that everyone of you enjoys it. Either way, I’d love to get as much feedback on this as possible, so please keep those emails and comments coming my way!
Here’s what some of the top DJ’s have to say:

Chris Udoh, Wamdue Kids, Philadelphia:
“This is just freaking awesome !! Feeling the vocal, the groove & the vibe. This joint says welcome to the party !!” 5/5

Tommy Largo, Guesthouse Music, Netherlands:
“very nice release. the eric davenport remix is the one i will be playing.”

Jay West, Candy Music, Argentina:
“Great tunage here, diggin original and alvarez’s versions a lot…” 4/5

Manuel Sahagun, Drop Music, Buenos Aires, Argentina:
“All versions are really good!!! I will play them all. Love those horns and bassline. Top work here!” 4/5

Jean Paul François, Spiritual Blessings/Gotta Keep Faith Records, Milan, Italy:
“ALL AROUND US is amazing!! The Original Mix is full of Energy and some good funky vibes. Eric Davenport made a funky loopy version…some really positive vibes. Also Daryl Darden enriched this song with his great voice. What a track! Play It and Chart it!” 4/5

Bryan Jones, Control Recordings, Chicago, IL:
“Hey thanks for the EP guys. Really cool start to the label. All tracks are strong, the Christian Alvarez mix will fit in my sets the best though. just in time for miami, thanks!” 4/5

Jon Lemmon, Viva Recordings, Oseao, Seatlle, WA:
“HOT! All around amazing production. Great vocalist, wonderful remixes, tons of great mixes to choose from. This is one of those releases you can actually choose different mixes to play out for different moods. Congreats to Bloompocket Jazz, If they continue like this they will find great success!” 4/5

Kaskade, OM Records, San Francisco:
“Very cool, dig it!” 4/5

Richard Earnshaw, Duffnote Records, UK:
“Original Mix and Christian Alvarez mixes on top of the pile!! :)” 4/5

Q-Burns Abstract Message, Eight-Tracks, Orlando, FL:
“Well now, this is cool stuff. Honestly, vocals in this style sometimes turn me off, but the composition and music behind it all wins me over here. Eric’s mix is totally the winner for me and I’ll be giving it a go in my sets. Cheers for it!” 4/5

Anji Bee, The Chillcast with Anji Bee, Long Beach, CA:
“classic track that recalls all the catchy goodness of doron’s previous work with monkey bars & toof! those horns and the vocal loop are so very doron. loving the crossover r&b pop stylings of the full vocal mixes. would like to hear an even more chill mix that plays up that angle to the fullest. christian’s mix is pretty nice, but i gotta stick with the original and radio edits as my faves.” 4/5

Roberto De Carlo, Zurich, Purple Music, Switzerland:
“Hey Doron, great brasses and nice harmonies… and now download… ;-)”

Rick Preston, Nervous Records, Santa Cruz, CA:
“Love the original!!!” 5/5

Deli-G, The Future of House Radio Show Worldwide, UK:
“Loving the Original Mix”

Alfred Azzetto, Purple Music, Italy:
“Great package high quality sound…Christian Alvarez’s Delectofied Deep Mix is my favourite… i will play it out.” 4/5

Craig Hamilton, Chicago House FM, Glasgow:
“Thanks for the promos, I really like all the mixes of this one, something for different times. But Eric Davenports remix really hits the spot. Full support on this one.” 4/5

I know that I’ve been rattling and rattling on for some time about this new single of mine entitled “All Around Us,” but at long last, I can happily say that this puppy is “out the door in a paper bag” and ready to rock dancefloors andearbuds.

As I’ve mentioned in several of my earlier posts, this is been an extremely lengthy process of composing the melody and the lyrics, creating sheet music for various live instruments, recording live musicians in the studio, and then producing and arranging the entire track on my laptop.

A monstrous tower of ultra-professional-level rack-mounted audio enhancement gear, much of it from before the days of digital.

Finally, after months of hard work, I got to take my labor of love into Threshold Sound + Vision in Santa Monica, and with the assistance of the great mixing and mastering engineer, Gil Tamazyan, we came up with what is without a doubt the best work I’ve produced in my 10+ years in the world of music production.

Now THAT's a BIG UNIT! While most reverb units consist of a rack-mounted unit or even a mere guitar pedal, this massive plate reverb takes things to a whole new level!

Before taking this into the studio, I had to take every single track from my laptop (ie: kick drum, hi-hats, guitar, tenor sax, vocal for the verse, etc, etc, etc - I think it came to about 38 in total) and create audio files with just those individual tracks playing. This process is also known as “bouncing.” Once I had those 30 or so audio files burned to a DVD, we loaded them into the Mac at Threshold Studios and had all of the tracks routed through hundreds of thousands of dollars of top-of-the-top of the line equipment. This is the same studio where artists such as Black Sabbath, Weezer, and the Cure have recently recorded, so I figured it should be good enough for my own laptop musings.

The infamous patch bay, where all of the individual tracks are routed to the nifty equipment you see in the monstrous tower of rack-mounted gear (pictured earlier in this post)

We worked for over 12 hours straight through the night to mix and also master the music, with Gil and his assistant (name escapes me at the moment) working feverishly to dial everything in perfectly. While I do have a good amount of experience mixing down music in a home studio environment, this was completely different, and these 2 engineers were like my guardian angels of audio, handling equipment that I’ve never even seen, much less actually used. Check out the video below to see the studio engineering “geek speak” in action!

The next step is to get this music out there, which will be quite an undertaking, as I will be releasing this on my own label to be known as “Bloompocket Jazz.” As of right now, I have two of my favorite remixers, Eric Davenport and Christian Alvarez working on their own interpretations of the song. Once those are completed and mastered, I will be creating a very special promo package which will be sent out to top industry tastemakers, and assuming that all goes according to plan, I will also be offering this very special promo package for sale online. This package will be something very attractive to look at as well as practical (no joke!), so stay tuned for more information about that!

In the meantime, I leave you with just a very quick snippet of this track. This song goes through a good number of different musical sections, making for an “epic” disco-soul-funk odyssey, so this is but a very small sampling of what you can expect to hear as I release the full version in the near future.
From that point, if you persevere in your mission to spend as much time as possible living in the present moment(which I suggest you do!), your new viewpoint will be “My life sucks BECAUSE I can’t live in the present moment.”

And with that realization begins the end of your life sucking, now and forever. In fact, if you continue persevering in this mission, no matter what, you will find yourself tumbling headlong…into unfathomable serenity and success.

For those of you who have noticed me rattling on since this past April about a tune I’m working on by the name of “All Around Us,” you may be asking yourself, “what type of a whack-job spends 7 months on the same song and is STILL working on it?! Who does this guy think he is - Brian Wilson?!?

Well, I’ve been called worse before! But seriously, due to the complexity of this type of track (think big funky-disco-orchestra), the process of putting this song together has been quite lengthy, but also extremely joyous! Believe it or not, this tune has actually been coming together more quickly and naturally than any other track I’ve ever worked on. While there has been a tremendous amount of time involved in composing the melody, writing the lyrics, creating sheet music for the live musicians, hiring and recording the live musicians, scheduling the sessions, editing the audio, and sequencing the parts, the actual work itself has been extremely easy and flowing. No back-and-forth between different musical ideas and no “oh no, back to the drawing board” moments. Due to my absolute refusal to work on this track except when sincerely inspired and joyful, this music has flowed out of me in a very natural and easy manner. Because this process has been so absolutely delicious, the track has simply flowed out of me is already a hit in my book- regardless of whether or not anyone ever hears it.

Todd Resnick, Jared, and yours truly after a great tracking session

In keeping with the natural flow of this music from my mind and into physical reality, the way this horn section recording came about was perfectly appropriate. I was wondering what to do about recording some funky JB’s-style live horns for this track, as I knew that it would be potentially costly to pay for professional musicians as well as studio time (since my own personal “recording studio” is limited to my MacBook Pro at the moment). As luck would have it, as I was in the middle of my planning, I got a call to play (sax) on as well as organize a horn section for a new teen-pop band. What ended up happening was that in exchange for contracting the horns for the pop tune, I was given free studio time with the horn players to record my own tune, so I ended up getting my horns recorded for $0.00! Goes to show what can happen when I begin to avail myself to the natural flow of things…

Deep in the trenches of horny FUNK...

At any rate, the session went extremely smoothly, thanks to my good friend Todd Resnick and his co-producer Jared who handled the recording of the horns, as well as my fantabulous horn players, Duane Benjamin (aka “Ben-Jammin”) on trombone and Charlie Peterson on trumpet. Between these two guys, they’ve performed with legends such as Aretha Franklin and on many TV shows, including American Idol.

I just finished digitally editing the horns this evening and getting ready for the final step in the process, which will be taking my completed composition to Threshold Sound + Vision in Santa Monica, CA where it will be mixed and mastered- but more on that in a future post.

This morning a good friend forwarded me a link to a news story by a ‘trend forecaster, renowned for being accurate in the past.’ At the bottom of the article was a list of the various news organizations who give great credence to the insights and predictions of this man.

To give a small taste of what was forecast for our future:

“It’s going to be a picture the likes of which Americans are not going to be used to. It’s going to come as a shock and with it, there’s going to be a lot of crime. And the crime is going to be a lot worse than it was before because in the last 1929 Depression, people’s minds weren’t wrecked on all these modern drugs – over-the-counter drugs, or crystal meth or whatever it might be. So, you have a huge underclass of very desperate people with their minds chemically blown beyond anybody’s comprehension.”

Below is my response to the article, which my compadre found very inspiring and day-brightening, so I thought I’d share it here:

This is CRAP! Ha ha, but seriously, I am much more optimistic. I see the opposite happening. All of the references cited as giving the author of these predictions credibility have one thing in common- they are in the business of mass-marketing fear and a mentality of scarcity to encourage people to purchase, hoard, drown themselves in work and stress, and remain transfixed to their CNN God!

Just as an alcoholic or a drug addict must hit a bottom before he makes the decision to make take responsibility for making his life a good one, I believe that our world is having a similar experience, hitting bottom with outdated concepts such as war, judgment, scarcity, and the “every man for himself” and “me first” mentalities. Remember, for every act of evil there are a million acts of kindness. The global level of consciousness is rising slowly, but surely, from where it used to be. If you’ll recall, the same man who would have been a slave 150 years ago is now our President, so clearly we’re moving in the right direction.

Additionally, it has been my experience that what I focus on has a way of showing up in my life, so if I can focus on joyous, loving, and energizing thoughts, that is what I will experience in my life, and that experience is extremely contagious. This law of attraction is finding its way into our mass culture along with things such as Yoga, meditation, and living in the present moment (Eckhart Tolle’s book A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purposehas been EXTENSIVELY promoted by Oprah Winfrey- she even gave it a 10-week online class and called it “the most exciting thing I’ve ever done in my life.”).

If the world does somehow come to a man-made end (very unlikely), it will be due to nothing more than our own pessimism and “intellect.” The world does not need a new political policy or an economic boost- those are merely symptoms of the new higher consciousness that we are acquiring as a human race. I believe that it comes down to finding our bliss as individuals by being honest with ourselves and helping others, and then the rest of the world will take care of itself.

(Whew! Thanks for inspiring me with that!)

To be more precise, it’s actually a song I wrote with my Monkey Bars partner in crime, Gabriel D Vine as well as Alex Lang, and was the reason we were offered a deal with Subliminal Records in 2001.

This past Monday (November 17, 2008), the tune was used in the TV show “Samantha Who?” for almost 3 minutes in a scene set in the bar frequented by the show’s central characters!

As for our tune called Shuggie Love- it was a song that we came up with as an intentionally-offbeat quasi-pop ditty chock-full of cartoonish sound effects, the most cliched-of-cliched house music samples, and inside jokes far too complex and twisted to even begin to get into in this post. The lyrics were written by our friend, the great poet, Alex Lang who used the name “Shuggie Love” as an alter ego for some of his more adventurous work and this tune was basically Shuggie’s theme song.

Despite the unusual nature of the tune, Subliminal head honcho Erick Morillo (the man behind the ubiquitous I Like to Move It back in the 90’s) took such a liking to it that he not only signed the single, but also had us produce an entire albumfor him. On top of that, Erick was kind enough to fly us out to Subliminal’s recording studio in New Jersey to have it professionally recorded and mixed.

Upon the release of Shuggie Lovein 2004, besides hitting the #1 spot on the UK’s Music Week chart, it appeared on numerous radio shows and dance music compilation CD’s worldwide, and even ended up as a ringtone!

The blessing of our tune was that it opened the door for us to one of house music’s biggest record labels and more importantly to the experience of producing our debut albumof original music.

At any rate, it was truly exciting to hear our old tune blaring in the background through the small screen, so here it is in all its televised glory. Enjoy!

I just wanted to let everyone know that I’ve done some research and put together a discography of all the recordings I’ve appeared on either as a producer or as a sideman. Noticeably missing from the list at the time of this posting are any recordings made under the name “Bloompocket,” but of course, that will be changing soon (you’ll be the first to know!).

Putting all of this information together has been quite the trip down memory lane, starting with those very early recordings that I did in the late 90’s with my compadre, Gabriel D Vine as “Toof,” through the many recordings I did with Ryan Lum and Anji Bee as a sideman with “Lovespirals,” to the album, EP’s, and remixes, also with Gabriel, as “Monkey Bars.”

I do mention in a note at the bottom of the discography page that my listing of recordings as a sideman is incomplete, so I’ll echo here that if anyone knows of any other recordings that I’ve appeared besides what’s listed on the page, please let me know. Enjoy!
