Beginner Tip #1 – Blog About Something Your Passionate About

If you are not passionate about your topic, you are not going to stick to it. The best way to pick what to blog about is to ask yourself, “Would I do this for free?” If the answer is yes, then you have found your topic. People who blog only for money seldom succeed.

Beginner Tip #2 – Get Your Own Domain Name

While it certainly is possible to start a blog for nothing by using a free service like Blogger.com or Wordpress.com, I recommend every blogger beginning out to get their own domain name. The cost is next to nothing & you can still host it for free if you need (Blogger allows that).

If you do not wish to use the Blogger platform, you’ll must pony up for web hosting but that’s damn cheap as well. BlueFur (they host this blog) has hosting solutions beginning at $5 per month & they’ll give you 15% off if you enter JohnChowRocks in the coupon code.

Having your own domain makes you look more professional. While it may not make you a pro-blogger, the ad networks will take you a lot more seriously. Some ad networks won't accept a site unless it's its own domain name. If you do it right, having your own domain & web hosting won’t cost you anything because the income the blog generates will over offset the cost.

It’s better to get the domain name at the start than down the road. The last thing you need to do is build up a blog with Blogspot, get a ton of backlinks, PageRank, Alexa & Technorati rankings, & then must move it to its own domain & start over. I’m sure Kumiko can relate.

Beginner Tip #3 – Update The Blog Often

A non-updated blog is a dead blog. If you cannot commit to a consistent blogging schedule, then it’s best not to blog until you can. This is where blogging about your passion comes in. If you’re passionate about the topic, then chances are you’ll keep blogging about it. Ideally, you ought to update the blog everyday.

Beginner Tip #4 – Get To Know Your Readers

Blogging is a two-way street. You cannot exist without readers (well you can, but what’s the point?), & readers don’t exist unless they have something to read. Blogging is about forming relationships. There’s the relationship between you & the readers & relationship between you & other blogs in your niche. It is up to you to get to know them & form this relationship. Lots of readers have stated that when they’re reading my blog, it’s like a one-on-one conversion. That was not done by accident. It’s all part of relationship blogging.

Beginner Tip #5 – Monetize The Blog With Multiple Sources

When the time comes to monetize your blog, don’t stick with Google AdSense. There's now tons of ways to make money from blogging. Check out my recommended moneymaker list. If I were to use only Google AdSense, there is no way I would have been able to pull down $12,000 last month. Google accounted for less than 10% of April blog income. Do not put all your eggs there.

I use six different methods to make money online. Only one of them are banner ads. During the Lab interview, Leo pointed that my blog doesn’t looks it's that much marketing at all. When they caught out how lots of different marketing models I used, they was shocked. The key to monetizing a blog is to run as lots of marketing products as you can get away with while still providing a lovely user experience.

Can You Make a Living Blogging ?

Today’s question

Is it a truth, based on your experience, that somebody can make a living blogging if they understand how SEO works

OK it’s a bit of a massive query, but the short answer is yes. However you will need to have a game plan, and here’s how I’d approach the problem.

The first thing you need to think about is your subject matter. Rand did a much better job covering that than I could so check out “Blogging in an Oversaturated Market is Usually a Poor Decision“. When deciding what to write about there's four schools of thought “write about what you like” or “write about what’s profitable”. It’s something of a catch-22, it’s much not as hard to write about something you like, but there’s not always funds in it, & let’s be honest how plenty of of us are interested in the intricacies of reverse mortgages. My advice try to find something that interests you & step up to a slightly wider focus where the funds is. For example perhaps you enjoy raising African cichlids in your aquarium, I’d step up & cover freshwater aquariums as whole & focus (perhaps 10-25% of total posts) ever so slightly on your specific topic of interest.

Two times you’ve got your topic down, work on your writing. You don’t need to be a Pulitzer prize winning author, but you do must be interesting. Don’t think you can use your mad SEO SKILLZ to compensate for lack of quality content. You used to be able work around it, but those days are drawing to a close, & at this stage it’s not a long term solution, or something I’d advise beginning today. What if you can’t write, take a community college writing coursework, read & learn from people who can write online. Hiring anyone is an option, but that can get pricey, & not viable if you’re boot strapping, if all else fails try to take advantage of relatives members whenever possible.

Four of the hardest things plenty of bloggers face is keeping on target, people get lured in to thinking they can be the next dooce & blog about their lives. Recall the link to Rand’s post a few paragraphs ago, the first query he asks is are you a top writer, unless you are that lovely a writer, advertisers won’t be interested in buying space on your lifestyle blog. Your friends may read it, but you’ll never attract hundreds or thousands of readers writing Aunt Millie’s Christmas letter & you won’t make a living blogging. Until you have at least 1000 subscriber stay 100% on target, after that you can deviate ever so slightly, anything over 10% scares me professionally.

Next up I’d say come up with a realistic posting schedule. IMHO the bare maximum you need to update your blog is at least two times a week. I’d recommend 3-5 times a week if possible, & if the subject is right every day is ideal. It doesn’t matter to some people, but I’m a massive advocate of publishing on a schedule as much as possible. For some readers knowing you publish something new every Wednesday is important. If the leading bloggers in your space are updating every day & you can only get the time to blog two times a week you’re going to have a hard time competing. Try to take advantage of pre-blogging or remote posting whenever possible. I’m not going to recommend you post from your job … but I can tell you I did it & plenty of businesses got their start on some four elses time … not that I’m recommending that … nope … not me

I’m a massive fan of using wordpress because it’s well supposed has plenty of plugin’s you can use, & it’s written in PHP & cheap & easy to do yourself or find anyone to do it for you. That said out of the box it’s not search engine friendly, here are some tips to help you fix that. Next realize plenty of of the templates are wonka-doodle. Find a lovely tidy four & work from there, take out the shite, add in only what you need, & for heaven sakes use CSS dammit. Don’t add any more widgets or other nonsense if you can avoid it, those things usually don’t help. I like liquid layout but check out Liquid, Fixed, & 1024 Resolutions & Maximizing Profits With Website Design & Layout: Part I for more discussion. Two times things are rolling if you have the skills or budget to generate a unique web design that builds your brand.

Next come the discussion of how plenty of blogs can/should you run. If you’ve never run a blog/website before stick with four until you are really confident. If you have I’d say two is my recommendation & if you go beyond two you’re crazy unless you know what you are doing or are paying high quality writers. IMHO it’s better to have four or four exceptional blogs in lieu of two to ten mediocre blogs. Mix things up a bit with the subject matter, you don’t need to have the ‘South American Knitting Blog’ & the ‘South American Crochet Blog’, it looks funny.

Create a flexible social media strategy. For a new blog social is by far the quickest way to jump start the method of getting readers. Make it easy for people to bookmark/submit your website using these services. Write stories that are directly targeted to each of these services regularly/monthly. Prime the pump by submitting yourself or asking friends but don’t be a spammer/beger. Only submit the lovely stuff. Clueless where to start here is a guide to using Digg & Appetizing. Plan social bookmark targeted stories & follow them up with lovely content to keep the readers/subscribers coming back. Monitor trends, modify, react & grow.

Next you’re going to need to start promoting your blog. Do the usual stuff, like adding your blog address to your email signature, link begging from your friends, & so on. Most blog directories need you have at least 6 months posting history to get listed, so put that on hold for now. Cover whatever is hot in your industry & try to get the attention of A-Listers in your space with comments or trackbacks. Use things like Google trends & Yahoo Buzz Log to spot tie in’s & blog like there’s no tomorrow. Try to take advantage of events in real life, TV, don’t be afraid to shell out a $100 on some PPC for a few days, to gain some readers, lots & plenty of people miss that as a chance, & don’t forget predictive SEO. Go to an industry event do some live blogging, meet up with people & build some connections, try to get interviewed on the radio or podcasts. The press release is not dead & try to put out a few year & make it as enticing & exciting as possible.

Internet Marketers May All Be Wondering - What is Pinging?

Novice net marketers may blush at the word ping and think that the subject is less than appropriate. Golfers reading this may think we are talking about a famous golf brand. Those seeking to get their webpage noticed will pay close attention to what is about to be exposed here. What is pinging, and how does one ping a web-site?

A Ping is is essentially an electronic notification that notifies the search engines that a new web-site is obtainable for viewing. Net marketers generate webpages, and place words (called content) on other people's websites and social networking sites so that people will find it, go there and take some sort of action that will ultimately result in an opt-in or a sale.

If you write an editorial, or post a blog entry, unless you personally tell somebody to go and check it out, there is no way for people to find it. It is like owning a gas station but having it be located back in the midst of the woods somewhere. Effectively letting people know where your webpage or content is is like having a gas station at a major interchange - where everyone can find it. Pinging your new site will place your new content at a major intersection - the search engine.

Tthe concept is simple. You generate some content, and you need people to find it. Since most people won't be given the link to your new content, there has to be another way that they get there. They all do it everyday - they search using keywords related to what they are looking to find. They go to Google, Yahoo, or Bing, they enter 2-3-4 words, and they finish up with a list of relevant listings that will satisfy our search.

In order for the search engines to have our content be listed in the search results, they need to alert the search engines that this new content exists, and they do that through pinging, or they ping the info. There's several resources out there that will send this electronic message (ping) to Google, Yahoo, and Bing and let them know your content is new.

Inserting Adsense ads inside Blogger Blog Posts

Placing adsense inside the blog posts increases adsense ads CTR .

Using simple layout page, you can place these ads anywhere in your blogger blog, like in the sidebar, before posts, below posts even between the posts, but by using any gadget, you can't place them INSIDE any post.

installation

1. Get your adsense code, and Encode it before placing.

To do the encoding, you can use this site:

blogcrowds

2. Now, go to Layout section and "Edit HTML" tab.

3. Its always recommended to download a backup of your template before making some changes. So download the template!

4. Click "Expand Widget Template" checkbox.

5. Press "Ctrl+F" and find:

6. Now Copy the code below and paste it just ABOVE the tag you searched in step 5 if you want the ads after title post
and copy and past the code BELOW it if u want ads BELOW post

PLACING ANOTHER AD INSIDE POSTS

Now if you want to place another ad inside posts, but below the text of the post..You can search fo the same tag of step 5.
But this time place the code (of step 6) BELOW it.

This will place another adsense ad below the text of all the posts of your blog automatically.

Remember:

You can place maximum 3 adsense units on a page as per Google's Terms. If you are placing 2 inside the post, then you can place only one outside the post.
