Half of the ED photo group (year 2) have been working on deconstructing and reconstructing a found advertising or editorial image. I think as whole they've produced some very good images through planning and experimenting with lighting in the studio. Roll on the next group, looking forward to seeing what they produce!

After a short siesta the Mid Cheshire College photo courses' blog is back. My colleague Claire Davies and I are picking up the baton from the much missed, amazing Roxana Allison who has gone on to things elsewhere in the world of photography.

Claire started the ball rolling earlier this week with some BTEC Extended Diploma students' work and here now is a taster from one of our Year 2 Foundation Degree Contemporary Photography students Ben Renshaw.

The Plot Thickens

The original idea was to photograph abandoned locations and objects along the canal near me (Trent and Merseyside). I then wanted models or a model within the frame acting as though the item or object wasn’t abandoned. Taking inspiration from Trent Parke’s Minutes to Midnight photo-book and Duane Michals photo-sequences, to create my own surreal photo-sequence. These images required a lot of planning before shooting and a lot of coordination when producing the manipulated images.

The Photo sequence was called 'The Disconnected Businessmen' and consisted of three images, shot in various locations along the canal. They depict a very abstract story of a disconnected businessmen.

'The Beginning Of the End' is the first image in the sequence yet can also be seen as the end of the sequence as well. Within the frame are two models, one dressed in business attire and the other wearing casual clothes. The model in business attire appears in the image four times, two of which depict life and death. The model in the more casual clothing plays the role of the 'observer'. He doesn't intervene only observes which, as the viewer, causes you to question his specific role within the image.

The second image 'The Plot Thickens' gives the businessman a bit more character depth. He is looking at abandoned objects within the frame; a detective piecing together a crime scene. Again, we see the second character observing the scene but does he play a bigger role?

The third image 'The Rainy Choices' is the last photo within the sequence and finally reveals that only one of the two models is aware of the other one leaving the viewer questioning the narrative of the sequence and creating a sense of the uncanny. - Thomas Griffiths

For this assignment I created a series of 4 images intended to be used for a series of supernatural book covers for older children. The theme of the work focuses on the childhood fantasy of being able to fly.

For the concept to work I had combine at least 2 photographs per image and use Photoshop to layer and manipulate the images in a non-destructive and creative way. Photoshop and image manipulation is something that I am extremely interested in and intend to explore further in the second year of the Diploma. - Sarah Thornton

Photographs interpreting the lyrics of Evanescence song Hello by Extended Diploma in Photography Student Octavia Smart. This was Octavia's Final Major Project and is on display in the End of Year Show at Mid-Cheshire College main campus in Hartford from 24th June to 3rd July 2014. In Octavia's own words:

'Inspiration for the video of Hello by Evanescence came from Amy Lee's lyrics and Evanescence haunting sound. To produce this photographic compilation of images for Hello by Evanescence, I have used my little girl, Aidia Smart, who is featured wearing a red coat in parts and white nighty in others. I have tried to tell the story behind the songs lyrics of Hello by Evanescence'.
