I hope you all had as awesome of a weekend as I did! I got to play derby not once, but twice! Which means I also got to spend time with a few of my most favorite people. Even better, I get to play more derby this weekend. Yay!

We had some wonderfully warmer temps last week, so I took full advantage and broke out the bare legs. And now that I'm moving into a professional working environment, I'm taking every last chance to wear some of my less professional options. I loved this outfit and will definitely keep it around for the weekends!

It has been a busy week, kids! We got a fantastic start with 60+ degree days, which was nothing short of awesome. Bare ankles and light jackets in December? Yes, please.

This sweater is the only mint item in my closet. In fact, it's probably the only pastel in my closet. I just love the way it looks with deeper colors like maroon, rust and browns.

I threw it on for a long, busy day on Monday. With my new job just around the corner, I've been doing a ton of moving and shuffling lots of stuff from place to place as I tie up loose ends at my current job. In fact, I have my first day tomorrow ... and I'm SO NERVOUS, EXCITED, ETC! It's like the first day of school all over again! Ack!

new beginning

Well ... that was an interesting and unintended little break. What a week!

It's amazing how life takes you to so many unexpected places. Since my last post, my world has been a whirl! I have gotten a new job, people! This lady will be a full-timer once again, and I couldn't be more excited!

Once again, I find myself on a career path that I never could have expected. I'll tell you more about it when I officially start in a few days. But I can say that I'm super excited to find a place where my creative mind and business thinking can live in harmony.

And it turns out I may end up with a little extra content for ye old blog. My new adventure requires a professional dress code. We're talking hose, heels and suits. And I'm kind of stoked about it! Of course, it means a little shopping and a lot of transition, but I'm excited to document it.

I'm kind of in love with this outfit. It's several of my favorite pieces, so really, what's not to love? In my humble opinion, the boots are pretty much killin' it. And by killin' it, I of course mean they are bad ass and exactly what this outfit needed. After talking them online all last week, I was super stoked to find one lonely pair in my size at Burlington Coat Factory in Pittsburgh this past Sunday ... for a THIRD of what they cost online! It was birthday kismet, I suppose.

Other things I love. PIE! Anyone else gearing up for T-day? First, I'm gearing up for a nice long 9 mile race tomorrow morning. This will be the third year I'm running and would really like to improve my time this year - even if only by a minute. Then, it's time for yummy Thanksgiving day dinner. But let's be honest ... I'm showing up for the pie!

ramblings of 32

And so it is. Somehow, I am officially 32 years old. Somehow, John and I have been together for 10 years. Somehow, that carefree "I have my entire life ahead of me" spirit sounds more like "I still don't know what I want to do and time is just going faster!" Seems all very dramatic, I realize. But it's true. I've developed some sort of anxiety about how quickly time passes. It has absolutely nothing to do with getting older, though. Instead, I've developed this deep-rooted awareness of how precious and irreplaceable time is that makes me questions whether or not I'm truly getting the most out of every single moment. Luckily, I live my life pretty full speed ahead, taking every opportunity the comes along, because it's just not worth waiting. But then, when I stop to think about the big things in life, I feel completely unprepared. Ah, birthday crisis.

Despite my preparation or lack thereof, another year has come and gone. Looking back, it was pretty fabulous way to leave 31 behind. Unfortunately, this cold is still lingering. On Saturday, I was feeling pretty proud of myself for how quickly I nipped it. So, I decided to do everything. You know, run 10 miles, frolic through brush and weeds learning how to play disc golf, accompany the guys to the gym, go to work for a few hours and then stay up way too late having deep soul-searching conversations (see above) with a close friend. And then Sunday came ... and thus, the return of the snots. Awesome.

So 32, huh? Yikes.

I'm so glad to see the weekend here. It's been an odd week. My body has finally given way to the nasty junk that's been plaguing nearly everyone around me. Nothing like a stuffy, painful head to put a damper in your week. So, when the going gets tough, the tough puts on her comfiest knits.

These ponte pants were probably one of my best purchases from last year. They are the perfect under-layer to a dress or tunic. And when the nip in the air is just a bit too much for tights, they are the warmest and comfiest option.

In other news, I will be turning another year older on Sunday. I can barely believe how quickly time flies!

After my grandmother passed away, I inherited heaps of vintage clothing that she had stored among the many closets in her decades old farmhouse. I have so many fond memories of sifting through those closets when I was young. They were full of hand-made treasures, well-worn hats - many still in their boxes, quality handbags (and in some cases, designer), and imported pieces from all over the world.

This particular dress has been sitting in my closet ever since I brought it home nearly 6 years ago. At first, it just didn't fit. After that, I think I just plain old forgot about it. But I've always had a faint memory of the black background and vibrant flowers - and all the sifting through fashion magazines of the season once again sparked the memory. Once I slipped it on, I fell in love.

It from an Italian clothing maker, and I think I would place it in the 60's or 70's. There's a pretty good possibility that it wasn't my grandmother's at all and may have belonged to a great aunt that I never knew. I can't wait for Thanksgiving to get here - maybe someone will remember its actual origins.

Few things bring such satisfaction as a sartorial connection to loved ones who are no longer here. It's no secret that I love clothes, and the fact that this number is still around means that someone else in my family tree felt the same way.

Haha! That's what John said, anyway.

Turns out, I am HUGE proponent of daylight savings. Not only will I never turn down an extra hour to sleep (seriously, can we do that every weekend?), but that little extra boost in time led to a huge boost in my weekend productivity on Sunday. By 11am, I had gone to Target, the grocery store, roasted butternut squash and made spinach pie. Booyah!

Of course, shopping before your morning coffee can lead to some impromptu purchases. You know, like a sweater dress with a freakin' fox on it! I couldn't resist, though. And if I get over the sweater dress part of it, I can easily shorten it to be a sweater. (I will have to share my sweater-shortening trick soon.)

found: the perfect beanie

Well, it's finally cold outside, which can only mean one thing. It's time to break out the beanies.

During the winter months, few things can part me with my beanie. I may push off wearing my heavy coat until sub-zero temps, but as soon as there's a nip on the tip of my ears, the knit hat comes out.

I'm always on the look for a comfy version the slouches ever so perfectly. A couple of weeks ago, I found it in the most unsuspecting place. After sifting through the womens section of outerwear at Target, I found myself in the mens section with John. While he searched for undershirts, I decided to scope out the head wear. And what to my wandering eyes should appear? Why, the perfect beanie ... in a multitude of hues ... for only $4!

I immediately pulled the maroon and grey and then, went back a couple of days later for the light blue - aka the blue hair for Thing 1 and 2. I haven't stopped wearing them since. In fact, when I came downstairs ready to leave for an afternoon of shopping yesterday, John looked at me at asked, "So, how long is this beanie thing going to last?" I immediately got my stink eye warmed up, when I realized the man had a point. I'm a woman addicted. So, I calmed myself a bit and simply replied, "Until March."

When I initially drafted this post, I had every intention of whining about how it's cold, and some sort of outerwear is becoming a necessity. Of course, said outerwear does not have to have sleeves ... especially if you are stubborn.

But then, much bigger things happened, and so I will instead talk about that ...

Last night, John and I went to see Bruce Springsteen and the East Street Band. Holy mind-blowing. That dude is 62 years old?! Never have I seen a performer have such amazing rapport with fans. And never have I seen concert-goers have such an incredible experience. With 16 musicians backing Bruce, the sound was more than I could have ever hoped for. We ended up with a great place to stand (general admission, FTW!) and even had a little surprise when the crowd divider merely 12" in front of us turned out to be a walkway for The Boss. Yeah, that was close. I'm so glad that we ponied up for the tickets, because I can't imagine an opportunity like that will come along again. Although, I'd pay every bit if it did.

All that excitement did come with a little sadness. I mean, we're talking about the band that is New Jersey. They played a great dedication to the Jersey shore and continued the Jersey theme throughout the show. My heart goes out to everyone who is still picking up the pieces. We were actually scheduled to play a derby bout in Jersey this weekend, but had to postpone it. Not only are many of the skaters still without power, but there is very little gas available to get anywhere. A little over a year ago, my hometown was ravaged by heavy rains and a rising river. I have yet to see anything more devastating than water's fury, and I hope I never do. NYC and Jersey, you're in my heart.

beauty: the perfect line

When I took the plunge and committed myself to the bob, I had a brief make-up identity crisis. Between the fringe and the frames, I needed to find a special new (to me) way to apply eye make-up that would allow my eyes to pop, regardless of the distractions. After years of loving it on everyone else, I finally decided to try my own hand at liquid liner and a classic cat eye.

Since my eyes are pretty deep set and hooded, I've always shied away from anything too heavy. But once I started lining just my top lid with the liquid liner, I was hooked! I especially love that I can throw it on in about 10 seconds and can go pretty natural on the rest of my face (not that I wear they much make-up to begin with).

Of course my new addiction led to a new mission: find the perfect liquid liner. While I haven't tried them all, I have tried 3. The ELF liner was perfect for the initial experiment. I was able to try the trend for a whole $1. You get what you pay for, though. It was rather sloppy to work with. The brush was difficult to control and the consistency was far to wet and paint-like. So, I went looking for a felt-tip liner. The CoverGirl Line Exact was a pretty good go. It's like a paint pen, complete with the little ball inside the pen to keep the liquid running smoothly. While I loved the felt applicator, just like the ELF, the consistency was too wet and easily smudged during application.

A couple of week ago, I finally found the perfect fit. Once again seduced by magazine advertisements, I set out in search of Maybelline's Master Precise. Love it. It's very marker-like. It has the pointy felt tip I loved with the CG, but with a formula that goes on smooth and dries quickly. I only wish it came in black brown, too!

I'm fairly certain that I have ripped out and saved every single Prada ad I've come across this fall. Quirky prints and funky silhouettes? Yes, please! Appearing in nearly every ad is the combination of big-ass, funky shoes with cropped trousers. Love. I gave it my very own spin with my slightly-more-appropriate-for-everyday-life pieces and quite like the tamed twist. Maybe next time I'll kick it up a little with some bright socks!

So, I bought these shoes with the intention of DIYing the platforms. I'm thinking something subtle like a rose gold metallic wash. I really want to add a little something funky to them. Any ideas?

I find insanely irritating to shop for pants. Especially this season. I love colored pants so much, but nearly everything is in a slim, cropped, trouser fit. No, no and no, thank you. They just don't work on my body. Never have, never will. So, when I initially spotted this pair in TJMaxx, I stopped, I drooled, I walked on. It was only when I decided to try on a pair of jeans that I thought "What the hell - I'll just try them on." Imagine my surprise when they actually fit!

Even better, I'm actually comfortable in them! Here's to the one in a million.

And in other news, 70 degrees in October? Don't mind if I do!

Not gonna lie - I think my title is kind of funny. Almost as quirky and weird as my new little sweater. I figure if I can't test run this baby in October, then when can I?

I'm a pretty huge fan of this outfit (and the super action shot of Iggy). While I love the look of shirt cuffs peeking out of a sweater, I really love the comfort of a sleeveless collared shirt layered under a sweater. It just makes moving so much easier, and for these mild fall days, it's not as warm. This particular one was a little too big, so I only buttoned the top button and then wrapped the rest of the shirt under the sweater. I like how the shirt tails look just a bit off-kilter. Notice a theme?

Lately, I've been feeling a bit off. Just one too many uncertainties and life decisions I suppose. Whatever it is, it's left me sapped. Unmotivated, uncreative and just blah. Well, enough is enough. Right now, I seem to have the one thing I always wish for ... time. Time to invest in myself, time to do what I like and time to get my sh!t together! Granted, I have much higher expectations of my productivity than anyone else, which of course, is ridiculous and a lot of unnecessary pressure. So, I'm going to relax. Take the time I always wish for and the lucky position I am in that I do have some time, and find my focus again. It's amazing how a little reorganization, make-up and a spiffy fall outfit can change a girl's mood.

I even got off my arse and took some pretty pictures. I loved this outfit. I love the monochromatic look from the waist down with the almost unexpected kick of mint. Add a little fall-inspired (and practically required) cognac, and it's downright perfect.

review: eShakti bird print wrap blouse

I recently received this quirky printed top from eShakti and have been excited to style it for fall. Truthfully, it didn't take much thought. Black skirt, red boots and go.

eShakti's site is chock full of amazing pieces for fall. Even better, they have tons of beautiful blouses like this in their clearance section.

While eShakti offers customization to their clothing, I ordered this one pre-sized and off-the-rack. It fit like a glove with the exception of the length. I ended up hemming about 3" off the bottom to make the proportion look right. Usually, polyester shirts tend to get crazy static-y, but a healthy dose of Static Guard on my way out the door seemed to do the trick. There was no clinging, slipping or sliding. This top wore like a dream. My favorite part is the darting around the tie-belt. It made the tailoring spot on and I think really attributed to how well is fit and stayed in place.

A couple of weeks ago, I hit the mother load at my favorite vintage shop. The Rag and Bone is closing it's vintage shop downtown and is pursuing an online store and lots of other opportunities. While I'm a little sad that I will no longer have that little vintage haven in my backyard, I'm so excited for Shelley's new direction! The silver lining for me? She's pulled out all the stops, adding more and more vintage, even that that is not perfect, to her shop before leaving.

I was immediately drawn to the stripes and colors on this dress and the fit is superb. Although, this is for those non-bloated days only. Thank goodness for the invention of elastic! I have to be so selective about the days when I wear this baby, because she is brittle. I don't care. I love it anyway.

This is my "it's officially fall, i.e. cold, and I'm not impressed" face. It's also my "I also hate the wind which is why I'm taking photos exactly 5 feet from car" face. My blood must be summer-thin, because as soon as the mercury dips below 55, I'm a shivering, whiny mess. I even put on tights today!

I'm so in love with all the clothes I have waiting for full on fall, and yet, somehow completely overwhelmed at the same time. So many ideas, so little time to wear them! First world problems, I know...

I'm so pumped for this weekend! Tomorrow night, SCAR Derby will be taking on Wilkes-Barre Roller Radicals on our home turf. Derby, derby, derby! I'll get to skate my heart out tomorrow night and I can barely contain myself! Do you have any hobbies that make your heart flutter?

I seem to have over-loaded my closet with knit pencil skirts this fall. This just may be number four. I can't help it, though! They're comfy, easy to style and make me feel pretty darn good. I'm definitely eking our the last few bare-legged days of fall. Usually, I can make it to November sans tights, but it's been brisk to say the least.

Under my bedroom light, this skirt took on an off-white coloring. In the daylight, it looks straight-up black, grey and white. It's split personality left me with split feelings on this sweater-skirt combo. At the end of the day (when I was back inside, of course), I really liked it. It's definitely a more neutral spin on the reptile print, but I can't wait to turn up the volume a bit next time I style it!

I must have inadvertently changed a setting on my camera or in Photoshop, because my last 3 days of outfit photos are pixelated. In true Kyla fashion, I immediately deleted all the original files after editing and before final publishing. Le sigh...

Until I figure out what I did, small photos it is.

In other news, I'm officially a blond again! I say again, because I was actually blond until my mid-twenties. My hair darkened practically the day I turned 26, I swear. I've been shying away from going blond for a while now due to the fear of being orange and the fear of the upkeep. But this is what happens when one of your best friends is an amazing colorist. You throw caution to the wind and bleach the ever-living crap out of your hair ... and absolutely love it.

Unfortunately, she's not going to be around forever. So, maybe a pixie cut in my future? We shall see.

Well, I officially went through "the change" this weekend. Yep, I changed out all my summer clothes for my fall and winter clothes. Sigh ...

Of course, nothing is ever that simple, and naturally it turned into a huge closet re-haul. Which still isn't completely done, but it's getting there!

New in my fall wardrobe is both this irresistible squirrel-print vintage blouse and this Target ponte knit skirt. These skirts are the BEST! I've got 3 ponte pencil skirt so far and will most likely add as least one more before the cool weather really arrives. They are just so easy and comfy to wear and make the perfect update to a kitschy vintage top, sweater, etc.

Well, it's officially cooling off. Part of me is thinking, "that was fun, fall - now, let's make it warm again" and the other part of me is ready to concede to all the comforts the season brings like snuggies, hot tea, my comfy sofa and everything apple and pumpkin. And, of course, cozy knits.

This dress was perfect for yesterday's nip in the air and occasional rain. Just like every year, I'll hold off wearing tights until the bitter cold end. Socks will do just fine for now, thankyouverymuch. Especially when they're edged in such pretty lace like these.

This dress is another product of my sewing binge from a few weeks ago. I love it and will most likely make another one. It was so easy and I can't get enough of the peek-a-boo elbows! I've got two more patterns cut out and ready to go, so I'm looking forward to my first weekend home in nearly a month, so I can pump out a couple more goodies.
