Purushottam Maas or Adhik Maas

Purushottam Maas or Adhik Maas is an extra month in the Hindu calendar that is inserted to keep the lunar and solar calendars aligned. Purushottam is an epithet of Vishnu, to whom the month is dedicated.

Generally, we know that there are 12 months in a Calendar year. Hindu calendar also has 12 months in a year, but each month is not of 30 or 31 days as we see in English Calendar.

This differentiation is because Hindu Calendar follow Moon’s Movement whereas English Calendar is made based on Sun’s Movement.

So as per Moon calendar, a month is exactly 29 days 10 hours and 48 minutes to sometimes 29 days 12 hours 44 minutes.

On an average a month stays for 29.5 days. 29.5 days multiplied by 12 months gives us the total days as 354 days.

The difference then between Lunar Calendar 354 days and Solar Calendar 365 days and 6 hours is 11 days 6 hours.

That difference must be corrected. Every third year this shortfall gets corrected as an extra month and that is called as Adhika Maasam.

Adhika Maasam comes in four combinations not exceeding three years.

1. 2 years and 4 months

2. 2 years and 9 months

3. 2 years and 10 months

4. 2 years and 11 months

In 2015, Adhik Mass was on 17th June to 16th July 2015 (This Adhika masa came in 2 years and 10 months)

In 2018, Adhik Mass was on 16th May to 13th June 2018 (This Adhika masa came in 2 years and 11 months)

Tappers & Listeners Syndrome

In 1990, a psychology student at Stanford University, conducted an interesting experiment. It was referred to as the "Tappers & Listeners" experiment. The rest of the world first heard of it when the authors Chip and Dan Heath started talking about in public.

For her PhD dissertation, Elizabeth Newton invited her peers in college to participate in the study. Each student was assigned one of two roles: 'Tapper' or 'Listener'. The tappers were given a list of twenty-five popular tunes, such as "Happy Birthday to you" and "Jingle Bells". They had to tap out the tune with their fingers on a table, and the listeners had to guess the song. As you might have guessed, this was not an easy task at all. Of the hundred and twenty times a tune was tapped, the listener could guess the tune correctly only thrice. That's a success rate of about 2.5%.

But here's the interesting bit. Before the tappers began to tap the tune, Elizabeth asked them to predict the probability of the listeners being able to guess the song correctly. The tappers predicted a 50% chance that they would be able to get the listeners to guess the tune correctly.

So while they thought that they would be able to get the listeners to guess correctly one out of two times, the reality was that listeners could guess the tune only once in forty attempts. How come?

Well, here's what was happening. As the tapper taps the tune, he can hear the song playing in his head His fingers seem to be tapping the tune in perfect sync with what's playing in his head. And he just can't understand what the listener is not able to pick up such a simple tune!

And what about the listener? Well, she doesn't have the tune playing in her head, without which, she has no idea what's happening. She tries as hard as can to make sense of the bizarre Morse-code like tapping that she hears. Alas, to no avail. This results in utter frustration.

As leaders, we often fall into the tapper's trap! We give instructions which seem very clear in our heads but our colleagues may have no idea what we want them to do. Has it happened to you that you called a young trainee to do some work, and when she got back the next day - having slogged all night to finish the task - you were disappointed? She hadn't quiet done what you were looking for. You probably felt a bit frustrated too, that she 'didn't quiet get it.'

The next time that happens, do remember that the problem is with the tapper - not the listener. Because you knew what you wanted to get done, you assumed it was clear to the young trainee too. That is seldom the case.

The next time you are communicating with a colleague, think about the "Tappers & Listeners" experiment. And remember, what's obvious to you may not be so to the other person. When the listener says he doesn't get it, that's not a signal to get irritated. It's probably telling you to put yourself in the other person's shoes, and try and be more explicit. Don't assume that knowledge levels are the same.

One more thing,

Tapping harder or Tapping repeatedly won't make it any easier for the Listener!

The director said, "I have a request.

When you go home today, go and clean your parents hands, and then see me tomorrow morning.

The youth felt dejected.

But when you are cutting grass, please let them experience it.

After a meal, let them wash their plates and bowls together with their brothers and sisters.

You want them to understand, no matter how rich their parents are, one day their hair will grow grey, same as the parent of that young person.

At a restaurant, a cockroach suddenly flew from somewhere and sat on a lady. She started screaming out of fear. With a panic stricken face and trembling voice, she started jumping, with both her hands desperately trying to get rid of the cockroach.

Her reaction was contagious, as everyone in her group also got panicky.

The lady finally managed to push the cockroach away

but...it landed on another lady in the group.

Now, it was the turn of the other lady in the group to continue the drama.

The waiter rushed forward to their rescue.

In the relay of throwing, the cockroach next fell upon the waiter.

The waiter stood firm, composed himself and observed the behaviour of the cockroach on his shirt.

When he was confident enough, he grabbed it with his fingers and threw it out of the restaurant.

A man found a cocoon of a butterfly. One day a small opening appeared. He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could, and it could go no further.

So the man decided to help the butterfly. He took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily. But it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings.

The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, which would contract in time.
Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled wings. It never was able to fly.

Human Beings and frogs are the two creatures in nature who have tremendous power to adjust.

Put a frog in a vessel of water and start heating the water.
As the temperature of the water rises, the frog is able to adjust its body temperature accordingly.

The frog keeps on adjusting with increase in temperature.
Just when the water is about to reach boiling point, the frog is not able to adjust anymore.
At that point the frog decides to jump out.
The frog tries to jump but is unable to do so, because it lost all its strength in adjusting with the water temperature.

Very soon the frog dies.
