This was a GREAT shoot for the Australian magazine, Belle (which happened back in May of 2012, and I'm thrilled that I can finally share this with you!) The lovely and talented writer, Carli Philips and I spent a few days exploring in and around Los Angeles. We visited many iconic and mid century modern homes in the city, and you know how much I love shooting architecture, so this was a perfect assignment for me. On the agenda were the Stahl House by Pierre Koenig (shown above as the opener), Sheats-Goldstein Residence by John Lautner, and the Reunion House by Dion Neutra. Of course I had to show off Silver Lake (my hood!), so LAMILL, Lawson-Fenning, Intelligentsia, and many others were featured in the story as well.

I never thought in a million years that I would end up with my very own tile collection when I started pw.travelogue two years ago.

When clé first approached me on creating a tile collection, I was instantly inspired by the simple and honest concept of translating a moment in time, in space, onto a tile. So much of my design and photography work is about positive and negative space, I knew I had to start from there. I've been an avid traveller ever since I was little, it just seemed fit to begin the collection with a series of black and white images with striking lines, shapes, and angles. It's not the destinations that I was drawn to per se, it was the moments at those destinations that got me to take a step back, indulge, and compose the frame.

Collaborating with clé has been a dream—they are passionate and savvy at what they do, and they do it with style. The Founder and Creative Director of clé, Deborah Osburn had me at "artisitc aperture" when describing my work the first time we met. What I had envisaged for this collection has gone way beyond my expectations. Each tile is lithographed by hand on pristine white thassos marble. I have to admit, seeing my first collection "urban" come to life in mural-like form is pretty incredible. The top photo above was taken during a working session we had at the clé studio—the perfect setting to get inspired and play.

Well, hello there!

It's been a while… and I have no excuse except to say that I've been caught in a whirlwind of travels!

I'm writing this as I fly across the Pacific Ocean to Hong Kong. I finally have a long enough moment to sit still, write a post, and edit my travel photographs.

For the past several months, I've been traveling, shooting, art directing, designing, and making new friends along the way...

August and September. Shortly after the summer issue of Wayfare launched in July, I spent the next two months in San Francisco, Napa, and Sonoma Valley on location for Pottery Barn. Saw many beautiful sunsets in the vineyards and drove down backroads that led to homes that could only be described as picture perfect.

October. Embarked on an once-in-a-lifetime journey and photo assignment to Australia. I got to experience the sacred grounds of Uluru/Ayers Rock, saw the Milky Way with my naked eye, rode a camel named Hercules in the desert, and even had an olive python wrapped around me in Alice Springs. Found my little piece of paradise on Hamilton Island called qualia (pictured above). Went snorkeling for the very first time—where could be a better place to do it other than the Great Barrier Reef itself? Hugged a kuala named Elvis, took a backstage tour of the Sydney Opera House, spent my last (and only) day in Sydney wondering around and getting lost in the streets of Surry Hills. There's so much more to tell, but I'm saving it for the next issue of Wayfare to tell the whole story, so do stay tuned for that!

November. Met Hurricane Sandy in New York City—what started out as a quick weekend trip became a long extended stay. Back to Los Angeles for a four-day shoot with Citizens of Humanity, then I was off again to San Francisco. Even squeezed in time for a press check for Wayfare in Vancouver. Flew home to Los Angeles for two days, long enough to spend Thanksgiving there and now I'm off to Hong Kong, finally. Taking a trip that is called, vacation.

I feel like I've been on a permanent jet lag, and that's okay. I wouldn't trade my past few months for anything. Not even Sandy could've changed that. I'm so blessed to be surrounded by good people, friends, and strangers. There was a moment in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef where I took off my snorkeling mask and snorkel, stood on the ocean floor and said to myself, "Enjoy this, breathe."

Not every moment needs to be captured with a camera. The ones that are captured with your eyes and heart are often times the best.

Today is the day that I can finally share this wonderful news with you... Remember earlier on the year I shot a travel story of Hong Kong for Wayfare Magazine? Well, I have taken on a much bigger role – I am now their Creative Director! I'm especially proud of this Summer issue, not only do I get to work with the amazing Editor-in-Chief Erica Dublin, but I also get to design the entire issue. With my editorial, branding, and photography background, it is an absolute dream job. I also shared a recent shot of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina (third spread down) as the features opener (I promise you will also see more of my photographs in the upcoming issues!) Yup, that's me, on my recent trip to Charleston! You know I love simple and stylish things, and you know I love to travel, so that's why I'm thrilled to announce a new travel collaboration with Everlane. I am now their Photographer in Residence, which means I'll be documenting my travels with their super chic Weekender when and where I feel inspired. I'm a huge fan of Evenlane's basics (you have to see this stop motion video of how their belt works – genius), so you can see just how excited I am about this on-going photo series. Love the contrast between the West Building and the East Building at the National Gallery of Art. West houses mainly European and American art from 19th to early 20th century; East showcases the Gallery's permanent collection of modern and contemporary art. The two buildings are connected by an underground concourse (third photo down) which feels like a portal that transports, or prepares you really, from one era to the next. Like all my other museum visits, it never feels like I have enough time in each...

As you are reading this, I'm preparing for my trip to South Carolina. Taking some time off before the next wave of projects and shoots begin. Plus more traveling in the next few months for work! Enjoy your weekend.

Happy Birthday to Mr. Frank Lloyd Wright (he would have been 145 years old today!) If you can believe this, all those years I lived in New York City, I had never once took a photo of the Guggenheim. And of course when I was back for a short visit a few months ago, I couldn't take enough of them. Also stopped in at The Wright for a quick bite to eat – burrata and pea greens salad with a glass of crisp Prosecco. Ahh...

Over the long weekend last week, I decided to catch up on the show The Conversation with Amanda de Cadenet. Have you seen it? My good friend Jane recommended it and I finally sat down and watched it – all five episodes in one setting (she knows me well!) Hard to say which are my favorites, but at this point of my life, the Conversations with Diane von Furstenberg and Glenda Bailey really ring true to me.

"The most important relationship is the relationship you have with yourself." – Diane von Furstenberg

She also talked about how crucial it is to have solitude. I couldn't help but remember my birthday post this year. I wrote about spending time with myself, and how content I felt. Solitude. That is my word.

So when I was setting out to edit my regular Friday's pw.travelogue post, an idea came to mind. The second I saw this photograph, it spoke solitude to me – I could spend all day there, sitting on the bench, reading, thinking, writing. Instead of a full-on pw.travelogue today, I thought of posting this instead. It's what's on my mind, and it's something that I would like to continue to do more of. A single image, a single word.

A year ago yesterday I was in Barcelona. Can't believe it's been a year now. And then I remember I never quite posted my edits! There was a sneak preview of Barcelona, but I definitely owe you a few more photos. So let's call it a one year anniversary of my European holiday shall we? ;)

The sole purpose of me bringing my phone on the trip was to take photos (I was completely unplugged for a month!). This may sound strange, but I love the architecture of the back of The Phillips Collection. The landscape of the buildings is so graphic, in its own contemporary and classic way. The museum's collection is phenomenal – there's even The Rothko Room, which limits up to 8 visitors at a time (pictured). Do you remember the post from last week titled overexposed? Well, here's the "real" shot on the bottom, Ellsworth Kelly's bronze sculpture, Untitled.

Couldn't get over how beautiful the light was when I was there. A very surprising and awe-inspiring trip to say the least. You see the capital on television and films all the time, but to physically be there and stand in front of the monuments is a completely different feeling. Even the architecture of their subway stations is quite magnificent. Psst, do you see the moon on the last photo?

Editing photos from my Washington, DC trip (which you will start seeing tomorrow!) and couldn't help but to share this one now. I remember walking out to the courtyard at The Phillips Collection and the first thing I saw was this floating sculpture by Ellsworth Kelly (one of my favorites) and had to take a photo immediately. Except, my settings on the camera was for indoor and without realizing it, completely overexposed the shot. But something about it I just love, and never deleted it.

It's been a month since I joined Instagram and I've got to say, I've been incredibly inspired. Really enjoy following other people and seeing where they are and how they view their surroundings. Do you remember I used to have this series called scrapbook mondays? Quite miss it actually and thought, perhaps I'll bring it back in another way. So here goes, my life in photos.

My Instagram feed (notice the little slideshow on the right column?) has become a mini blog for me in a way. I post photos throughout the day, sharing glimpses of my daily musings. This roundup is about comforts — vignettes of my home and surrounding spaces.

Making this series official — check in for luxury (although I think it really started with my stay at The Upper House in Hong Kong last year!)

I used to live in the East Village many years ago, and during my last trip to New York City, I revisited my old stomping ground and checked into The Standard, East Village. The view alone is worth the stay. And if you could get a corner unit, even better. I had also been meaning to check out Chef David Chang's Momofuku restaurants in the East Village, so the location was perfect. His Ssäm Bar was quite good, full of big culinary flavors.

A healthy business trip starts with choosing the right hotel for me. Whether it's a short two-day trip or a week-long stay, being in a comfortable hotel AND at a convenient location is crucial to me. My recent business trip to New York City is a good example. A little homework goes a long way... researching for an ideal hotel, mapping out all my must-see spots and museum exhibitions, or downloading useful apps for the phone while traveling (the NYC subway app is an essential one in this case). I knew I wanted to be near Central Park, so I chose Six Columbus, a Thompson Hotel at Columbus Circle. I also like to have at least a day to myself before the hectic schedule begins, so planning my agenda ahead of time really pays off.

Watching the city wake up is one of my favorite things to do, even when I lived in New York years ago. Finding time for myself has become a routine for me these days. The top photo was the first image I took of this trip — the morning of my arriving at the hotel in Columbus Circle. It was that one perfect moment with a cab on an empty street, the sun casting a warm glow across Central Park... The blossoms were in full bloom all around the Park and it made me happy just being there. Also stopped at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for The Steins Collect exhibition. If you haven't seen it, please do. You will not be disappointed. Rooms after rooms of paintings by Matisse, Picasso, Cézanne, Degas, Gauguin... the list just goes on and on.

Dining for one has also become somewhat of a ritual for me at museums these days, and I have to admit, I quite enjoy it. While I was at the Met, I was seated at a table with a view at The Petrie Court Café and Wine Bar — looking out to Central Park while enjoying a late afternoon lunch was absolute perfection.

love what you do.
How many times have you heard someone say that? And yet, it rings true every time. I came upon an alto saxophonist (pictured above) at Central Park earlier on the day. I watched him play for a good ten minutes before he took a break. I struck up a conversation with him and found out he has been playing under the same arch for over a decade, everyday. Listening to him play was a gentle reminder that you HAVE to love what you do. Find that balance between work and pleasure — allow yourself the time to decompress, walk the city, listen to the sounds, immerse yourself into nature, and if you are lucky enough to spend a few hours at a museum, be inspired by works of art. You will leave your destination with a new-found joy in business trips, and hopefully, get to know yourself a little better as well.
