I am new here and don't have any idea yet of what to write. Let me just introduce myself, first. My name is Emila Yusof and I am a freelance graphic designer/illustrator from Malaysia. I have two blogs: Emila's Illustrated Blog and The Other Side of Emila. I have been awarded the Blue Ribbon Award by Francesca on July 19th, 2007.

I have been actively involved in the drawing community, such as Illustration Friday, Monday Artday and a few others. I recently joined the Drawing Day which has been held on June 7th and illustrated my so-called first children's book. I actually challenged myself to really sit down and draw the whole book, 12 pages to be exact. The story in undergoing a re-writing in a form of poems. Here are few pages from the book:

Cheers! Have a great weekend!
When I was in high school I was a great baker. I baked whenever my parents were home. Usually, if they were home, they occupied the kitchen. And although I mostly hid in my first-floor back bed room, which I’d painted a streaky red, unaware of how the thin, already close walls would move in, I needed to emerge practically every day. Unless I climbed out a window, I needed to pass through the kitchen. My mother and father, sitting across from each other at the table, always wanted me to sit down and talk.

A terrible motor-mouth most of my life, from age thirteen to seventeen, I had nothing to say to my parents. Nothing. In fact, being in the same room with either of them required a good deal of self-control. The secrets among us made me jittery. The Joy of Cooking saved me.

Because, obviously, if I was busy baking, I couldn’t sit down with them. Baking required me to stand at the counter, my back turned. They could see I was laying out the ingredients for bread or cake or puff pastry. The physical activity brought me further relief, really to the point of pleasure. Bread especially: Kneading, pushing, slapping it—and oh, punching it down—felt wonderfully satisfying.

One December I discovered my grandmother’s recipe for sugar cookies. These called for creaming pounds of butter with pounds of sugar; if done without a mixer, which I announced was how these cookies originated and we very much wanted originality, this first step could last a good, strenuous hour. Measuring the flour and baking powder, salt and soda demanded precision and concentration or else all the expensive staples would be wasted.

I folded the dry ingredients into the whipped butter and sugar very slowly, dredging what lay at the bottom of the bowl and tossing it carefully up with a spatula. Altogether the preparation could fill an evening. I scrupulously refrigerated the dough overnight, planning to wile away the weekend rolling it flat, cutting it into the shape of snowmen, bells, trees, wreaths, et cetera. Half a dozen cookies baked in the oven for ten minutes and it was time to set each one to cool before filling the trays again.

What a good girl I was, always making cookies. If my mother or father asked me a question, any question, “Just a minute,” worked as an agreeable answer. If they wanted me to wash the floor or vacuum or do the laundry, I said, “Just a minute,” and they realized they might better ask one of my sisters. Because what I was doing was sweet. Nothing was wrong with me.

What I saw or my friend saw was a sliver of daylight in the bedroom.

They would never think that, though, not in those words. At worst, as they made small talk at the kitchen, a shared pause might arise. But all the sugar and cheerful busyness erased any worries.

After I’d used the dough to make seven dozen—we’d give tins of them to the neighbors—each little reindeer deer and rocking horse would be elaborately decorated with butter cream frosting heavily spiked with food coloring.

Life is a learning curve and I guess this is payback time hahaha.

Anyway, it's Friday and the weekend is approaching so I thought I would post a video I did some time ago on my blog and it's quite relaxing, well I think so anyway, so take some time out and 'chill.'

So sit back, get the popcorn out and enjoy.

Tomorrow, in the state of California, gay marriage ceremonies will be performed legally as a "marriage" - something only Massachusetts has been able to accomplish before now. Domestic Partnerships and Civil Unions are not representative of equality in my eyes, and I hope that the phrase "As goes California, so goes the nation" becomes fact in this concept of equality in marriage.
My theory: If Gay Marriage was legalized in the United States, it would turn around the economy. Just imagine -- every Target across the country would be full of Happy Couples registering for everything from camping equipment (you know how us gays love to camp), to patio furniture, to matching Hers & Hers towels. And every other major retailer would have to follow suit by changing their Bridal Registry to Gift Registry (something Target did years ago).
Then think of the domino effect: plenty of businesses would profit from this = from florists to stationery companies to tux rental places (rent the groom's tux & get the other groom's tux free!), from wedding gown designers, to the travel industry (yes, gays could save bankrupt airlines if we could all fly to some exotic location for our wedding, toting an assortment of friends and relatives along for the ride). Just think of all the hotel rooms and Bed & Breakfasts across the country that we could fill up with those guests! The catering business would go crazy! Even organized religion could benefit - churches across the country could be rented out & pastors could have something to do besides try to come up with punny phrases for their marquees.
I don't know why this concept frightens so many people. I was taught that in our Constitution, all people should be treated equally. Even some allegedly "liberal" people are gun-shy when it comes to the word "marriage" in conjunction with 'the gays.' To me, this is simple discrimination.
Obviously, this is my opinion. Don't be afraid of voicing your opinion - tell me in a comment how YOU feel. I'm used to the controversy on this subject, so tell me: do you support "marriage" equality for all consenting adults in the United States?

Well, some people around here have heard what my son has done to our male calico cat recently..My son Christopher painted the cat Purple with latex paint...We had tried washing him off with no luck...Luckily he kinda has long fur..I ended up giving him a haircut with scissors the best i could to get the darn paint off the poor cat...These are the pictures of the cat before his haircut...His name is Misfit...He still has plenty of fur left..Shinade-the cat is not bald at all..His fur will even out in time....

My maternal great-grandmother was Flossie J Wilson. I had a dream about my grandfather the other day, and that got me thinking about other members of my family... here's a story about Grandma Flossie.

Grandma Flossie was not an easy person to love. Her first husband, the father of my grandmother, left her to work on the railroad. He probably realized what a bitch she was and fled, but the story we've always been told is that he left to work on the railroad. So, Flossie gave up her child to her own parents and took to the rails. She became a baker in the dining cars of passenger trains, traveling the country looking for her runaway spouse. She made the greatest biscuits -- probably from baking scores of dozens of them on the trains. At some point, Flossie either realized that Hobart Goad was either dead or not worth the effort, so she settled down with a second husband, John E Wilson. My grandmother spent some time with her mother and her new step-father, who she called Daddy John, but she was raised by her own maternal grandparents. My grandmother, Glenna, and Flossie never really got along -- the whole abandoning thing was pretty hard to get over, plus both had such strong personalities. Daddy John dropped dead of a heart attack while working in the garden, back in the late sixties, leaving his widow a very bitter woman. How my grandfather ever put up with Flossie for a mother-in-law defies belief -- and yet he spent every single vacation of his adult life working his ass off in Virginia, fixing up Flossie's homestead! For all of his faults, Henry should've gotten sainthood for that!

Now, I can't really comment on the relationship between my mother and Flossie -- I can't ever remember seeing them together, because when we were kids, my mom's parents always took us to Virginia for summer vacation with Grandma Flossie. But Flossie adored my sister Erin. She was the light in her eyes, the morning sun, all that was good and pure. Me, on the other hand, she barely noticed unless it was to limit my portions at meal-time -- I was too fat, in her opinion. Several times she had me burst into tears at the dinner table. Perhaps it was her disdain for men in general -- she'd been burnt a couple of times in the man game. Perhaps she knew I was destined to disappoint anyone who loved me, so why bother?

The thing that un-did the insurmountable Flossie J Wilson was termites. Her ancient home, built by her father and brothers, was all-wood and all-ate up with termites. So, she called the exterminator, who tented her house and filled the tent with noxious bug spray. But would that stop Flossie from staying the night in her house? No. I can just imagine the poor exterminator's face, trying to prevent her from entering the two-story tent. "Get out of my way, boy," she probably said. I wouldn't want to be the buy man between Flossie and her home. The night in the fumigation tent, however, was her last one in her beloved home. After she got out of the hospital -- she was too mean to die from bug spray -- my grandmother put her in a nursing home. A very nice nursing home, as nursing homes go, I might add. But Flossie was furious. My poor grandmother had no end of troubles over that nursing home. Glenna, my grandmother, had to petition the nursing home board of directors to get Flossie a space heater for her room -- the home was climate controlled and space heaters were forbidden, but eventually Glenna got her mother a space heater. The morning after the space heater was installed, Flossie poured a vase full of flowers into the hot electric coils of the space heater, shorting out the electricity for the entire nursing home!!! That's our Flossie!

Upon Flossie's death, my mother and sister were devastated. I think Glenna was kind of relieved. I was upset over losing an historic great-grandmother (I wanted to record her life history and make it into a book, but Flossie was NOT about to let 'the boy' interview her!), but needless to say, I really wasn't devastated like Erin was. The funeral was in the Spring, in the late 1980s. My grandparents came to our house first and took Easter photos of Erin and me and our calico cat, then drove my mom to the funeral. I guess Erin and I must've had school, because we did not go to the funeral. My grandfather also took photos of the funeral. Later, back in Cleveland, my grandmother Glenna about dropped dead on her own when she saw the photos -- my grandfather had taken the Easter photos, then re-wound the film, then took funeral pictures -- double-exposing the 'kids at Easter' over top of the 'Flossie in the coffin'!!! The more infamous photos in this collection -- like the tractor seat with the cat sleeping on it sticking up out of dead Grandma's chest -- quickly disappeared, but years later, as Erin and I cleaned out Glenna's photo drawer after her death, we found the packet of double-exposed Flossie Funeral photos. The one of our basset hound lounging on the fresh dirt in front of the casket always brought a smile to my face -- Sam was huge in relation to the casket in the photo -- she was practically a coffin-sized tongue-lolling hound dog whose floppy ears were as big as the graveside flower arrangements! But my favorite had to be my mom & sister's faces ghostily appearing on the lining of the casket, their faces floating above Grandma's. An eerie end for Flossie!

Dear Members of Congress,

A call was received one fall day over 17 years ago from the executive director of the Nebraska Childrens Home Society, that maybe, just maybe, there was a birthmother who may want us to adopt her child. It was a boy. He was five weeks old. On the off chance the birthmother decided I was to be a mom, the director told us to buy a car seat, so we did.

She was 16. The birthfather was 17. She was a good student in her little high school. She decided adoption was her best route to give them both what they needed. She had dreams of college and escape from her little bit of nothing town. She wanted more for her child. The birthfather and she were no longer together, but he remained by her side as she made this journey.

We stashed the family photos in the back seat so the birthmother could see what the boy would be in for. How there were cousins and aunts and uncles and grandparents to love her son. We ticked through names again, just in case he didn’t look like the name we’d so carefully selected. Clothes were hastily packed and tossed in the trunk. The plan was to leave in disappointment, but we hoped for the best outcome.

The six hour drive across I-80 and the three driven north beyond that was of little of interest and was mostly spent just contemplating what might happen. After traveling for hours through buttes and mesas, we arrived. That night, we stayed at the Sleep Is Futile Lodge.

In the morning, we trekked over to the appointed meeting place. The western office of NCHS was a beat up old mobile home that sat forlornly in the middle of a square plot of Nebraska desert dust edged with a white picket fence. The old woman who answered the door had social worker written all over her. She asked how our drive was and told us they’d be here soon. Before long, a beat up old red pickup truck with a bag of Pampers in the back showed up.

A thin, handsome young Mexican man with a whispy teenager mustache and cowboy boots stepped out of the driver’s side. A cute brunette, who looked such a child herself, stepped out of the passenger side, holding the child. They tentatively approached the door and knocked.

At that moment, I found myself shaking uncontrollably. Would she like me? Would I be the one she could see rocking her child to sleep every night? The fate of my dream to be a mother was in the hands of two who were children themselves.

Hours later, after thousands of questions had been asked and answered in both directions, they stepped outside to speak to each other in private. A few minutes later, they came back in.

She walked up to me. She slowly lifted her eyes from the shining eyes of the boy in her arms to mine and said quietly, “What will you name him?” I told her.

She handed me their child. She handed me her child. She handed him to me. I was holding my child.

She kissed him goodbye. He rubbed the boy’s head.

They cried and held each other. Then they left.

Suddenly, despite all of our preparation, we had no idea what to do with this thing, this human being who had been so ceremoniously handed to us. Would I be a good mom? Would I love him enough? Would I do it unconditionally?

The boy turns 18 in four months. I’ve had 17 and 2/3 years to love this boy. To love him so much that every time he makes a mistake, I ache for him. That every time he has a triumph, I cheer for him. That every time he has a sniffle, I wish I’d started that medical degree. That every time he pulls away on his way to growing up, I cry for me.

He is my first child. He’s the one I had hours and hours to spend holding up in the air as I lay on my back, slowly bringing him and his cute little protruding ears down to my chest as he giggled with glee at the ride he had somehow ended up on.

He’s the one I have hundreds of photographs of as he made his way from formula through 52 flavors of Gerber’s as though he was the first child ever to master strained carrots and peas. This boy who still faints at the site of blood or needles.

He wants to join the Marines. He has some idea that it is heroic or valiant or he will somehow make a statement about who he is or what he can do if he does this. There is nothing heroic about the war in Iraq. We are the invader.

No amount of counsel has thus far made a difference. And, in four months, it’s out of our hands. He knows that.

My son will be a teenage man-child, far from prepared for the horror of battle and the scars that will eventually come later, if he’s gets that far. Just like so many others who came before him. Many of whom never came home. He doesn’t understand that his sense of immortality is a false god to rely upon. Or the permanence of death and what it leaves in its wake.

I don’t want that for my son. My son with the big empathetic heart and the dimples in his cheeks and cleft in his chin. He is destined for something else, not this, not this war.

The war needs to stop. I don’t want to lose my son. There, I said it. I’m selfish. I think I’ve finally earned that right. I want the chance to someday hold his child up in the air as I lay on my back, slowly bringing him and his cute little protruding ears down to my chest to giggle with glee. And, I don’t want any more mothers or fathers to lose their child to this nonsense–not on either side.

Tell me you can make that happen, Ladies and Gentlemen, tell me you can. Tell me you’ll do it now. Before my son turns 18 and does what teenage boys do – not listen to his parents just because he can. What a stupid reason to become a Marine.

Stop the War Now.

Never More Sincere About Anything,

This is YOUR blog!

And - as intended by The Original Blog Fairy at the time - it can (and should) be used by all those bloggers that she once selected, to publish about anything they like, and to promote either themselves, or their blogs, or any of their causes.

As it is a real community blog, the ‘attitude’ or ‘tone of voice’ of this blog will vary, by the nature of those posts that individual Blue Ribbon Bloggers are publishing on it.

So sometimes the ‘look and feel’ of this blog may be a little upbeat, funny, or sometimes even ‘silly’. Yet, in other periods it may look like it’s all about spirituality, then again it’s all about blogging, memes, or life in general, who knows?

In short, there’s no real ‘format’ for this blog, and as admin/editor I am not supposed (nor intending) to interfere with that... I am convinced, however, that our readers really like to continue seeing this wide variety of posts and topics here on this - your - blog!

Off-the-record comments are suggesting we could use some more ‘writing’, a little bit of fiction, some 'posts about literature in general'. Short stories, poetry, reviews.

So, yes, this is another link-call for posts. They can be posts that you have published somewhere before, or actually anything, really. We would simply love to see some more of your posts.

And we would love to welcome those Original Blue Ribbon Bloggers that are not yet enrolled as a co-author. We would love to see them joining us with some of their great posts. From time to time, or everyday. Frequency and topics are up to you.

A wide variety of subjects and topics are only natural to a genuine community blog, so you would not have to worry if something you would like to publish would be ‘appropriate’...

So, again, here goes! Calling:
That never happened all because of my husband and his temper tantrum...A 1 hour wait to get my haircut was too long for him to wait around with the kids..Of all days i actually have him home to help watch the kids so i can get something done for myself and he has a hissy fit...I don`t think he relizes the wait is worth it to have somebody you trust to cut your hair to cut it..I am not going to just anybody to have it cut like most men do...If somebody screws up your hair you are stuck with it most of the time unless you can find somebody to correct it, if they can..and then pay another charge to get it fixed...I love my hair and don`t trust just anybody...Do you trust just anybody to touch your hair? What mistakes have you had done when somebody screwed it up?
Take a 10-30 minute walk every day. And while you walk, smile. It is the ultimate antidepressant.
2. Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day. Buy a lock if you have to.
3. Always pray and make time to exercise.
4. Spend more time with people over the age of 70 and under the age of six.
5. Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat less foods that are manufactured in Plants.
6. Drink green tea and plenty of water. Eat broccoli, almonds & walnuts.
7. Try to make at least three people smile each day.
8. Clear your clutter from your house, car, desk and let new and flowing energy into your life.
9. Don't waste your precious energy on gossip, issues of the past, negative thoughts or things you cannot control. Instead, invest your energy in the positive present moment.
10. Realize that life is a school and you are here to learn. Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away like algebra class.. but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime
11. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a layman and dinner like a beggar.
12. Life isn't fair, but it's still good.
13. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.
14. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
15. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.
16. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.
17. Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
18. Ladies - Go on and burn those 'special' scented candles, use the 600 thread count sheets, the good China and wear fancy clothes now. Stop waiting for a special occasion. Every day is special.
19. No one is in charge of your happiness except you.
20. Frame every so-called disaster with these words: 'In five years, will this matter?'
21. Forgive everyone for everything.
22. What other people think of you is none of your business.
23. Time heals almost everything. Give time, time!
24. However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
25. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch with them.
26. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.
27. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need. God provides, remember?!
28. The best is yet to come.
29. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
30. Do the right thing!
31. Call your family often.
32. Each night before you go to bed complete the following statements: 'I Am thankful for __________.' ‘Today I accomplished __________’
33. Remember that you are too blessed to be stressed.
34. Enjoy the ride. Remember that this is not Disney World and you certainly don't want a fast pass. You only have one ride through life so make the most of it and enjoy the ride.

LIVE, LOVE, LAUGH.
LIFE's a gift. That's why it's called PRESENT ... UNWRAP IT!

Have a Blessed day.

Please share with friends!
