Håller med till 100% – väldigt ofta är mindre och enklare också roligare.

Efter att ha sålt vår X-41a Kwanza så var vi väldigt nöjda med att få vara med på satsningen på den nya Club Swan 43an Vargen. Vi hade själva närt en dröm om att kappsegla i Medelhavet men insåg att vi aldrig skulle ha vare sig tid eller pengar till att genomföra det. Men nu får vi vara med ändå och uppskattar utmaningen med att vara med och få utveckla en ny klass. Men efter att ha varit i St Tropez i höstas så saknade vi seglingen på hemmaplan. På flygplatsen gjordes planen upp bland oss fyra blivande delägare att det var dags för något nytt och enkelt på hemmaplan 2026. Men vad?

Kravlistan var rätt enkel. Trailerbar, begränsad besättning, snabb, enkel, modern, gennaker och att kunna vara med på MBBR. Efter lite utvärderingar stod det mellan Farr 30, Fareast 28r och Melges 24a. Med en snittålder på över 60 år så kändes Melges för sportig och Farr 30 något för gammal och känslig, dessutom väldig hög på trailer. Så i vintras blev det en Fareast 28r, nya Kwanza.

I lördags var det Tjörn Runt i vilken ordning vet vi inte. Vårt första Tjörn Runt vad med en Vindö 40a 1973 och kampen var att slå övriga Vindö-båtar. Sedan har vi haft Comfort 34a, Maxi Racer (Cats & Soffi), J24a (Lotus 123), X-95a, Farr 38 (Hägring), First 40,7 (Drake), First 35, X-41 och nu Fareast 28r (samtliga Kwanza) och seglat Tjörn Runt ett antal gånger med samtliga båtar. Vi har vunnit startgruppen ett par gånger men aldrig totalt. Men vad är egentligen viktigast?

Vi har kommit fram till att vår måttstock som vi hade med pappas Vindö 40 räcker fullständigt för att njuta av och få spänning av kappsegling. Alla kan vi skapa vår egen måttstock och bestämma vilka konkurrenter vi vill slå och hur vi ska förbättra oss. 

Nu har vi hunnit med tre regattor under sommaren och vi har hittat en båt som givit oss det roligaste Tjörn Runt som vi någonsin seglat. Inte för att resultatet var det bästa, vi kom 5a i stora kölbåtsklassen och 51a totalt. Men det var definitivt bättre än förväntat med potential till bättre resultat i framtiden. Men undanvindarna var fullständigt magiska och ger en helt ny dimension till seglingen. 

Under MBBR började vi lära oss båten, men med begränsad tid för träning så gjordes flertalet misstag och även under Hermanö trålade vi  gennakern och fick sedan ett fall som fastnade vid nedtagningen vid sista rundningen. Så skedde även under Tjörn Runt där de flesta säkert sett vår vurpa under kraftledningarna där vi broachar svårt. Men vi tycker om att segla hyfsat offensivt och har alltid haft bra hantering av båten även i hårdare vind. Vi gjorde ytterligare säkert 3-4 broachar då vi hade vår största gennaker. Men däremellan seglade vi i 18 knop och flög förbi allt och alla. Tidsangivelserna visar att endast en Melges 24a var snabbare från Vasholmarna in till mål. Den känslan var det häftigaste vi varit med om. Vi gjorde surfar i över 18 knop med X-41:an, men nu flög båten fram i en konstant fart på 18 knop.  

Men även kryss och halvvind är en ren glädje och på MBBR kunde vi matcha X-35orna på kryssen. Att vi ännu inte seglar upp till vårt mätetal är inte lika viktigt. Båten är fantastisk att segla och vi fortsätter att lära oss hela tiden. Vi har testat med sex man på MBBR och Hermanö, vilket funkar bäst och var något lätta på Tjörn Runt där vi var fem man. Sittbrunnen är stor och lättarbetad, två winchar i sittbrunnen, många cleats och en winch på det asymmetriska rufftaket räcker gott och väl. Enkla avlastare på det korta däcket mellan mast och nedgångsluckan gör jobbet enkelt och avsaknaden av förpikslucka förenklar ytterligare. Alla får plats. 

Eftersom vi inte kommer hinna med några fler regattor i år så lyfte vi båten direkt efter Tjörn Runt. En timme för att rigga av och sedan lyfta upp på trailern och vips så är båten klar för vinterförvaring. 

Vi är efter denna första säsong otroligt nöjda med Fareast 28an, det blir säkert ingen stor entypsklass igen så vi ger oss själva stor frihet att förbättra båten. Bland annat har vi haft problem med att storen fastnat i akterstaget vid slag och gippar, så det kommer åtgärdas. 

Det finns ett antal till salu och vi hoppas nu att fler ska upptäcka denna fantastiska konstruktion med hög fart och enkel segling. Både på Hermanö och Tjörn Runt hade vi sällskap av andra Fareast 28or. Under alla omständigheter kommer vi köra många säsonger med fokus på Västkusten och det vore kul att få några fler båtar att utvecklas med. Det blir inte bättre; Snabbt, Billigt och Enkelt

After a great season so far, it was time for what would probably be the biggest challenge of the year: the 635 nm RORC Baltic Sea Race. It was our first properly long race as a double-handed crew, but we felt comfortable with the boat, our new sail inventory, and with each other.

Gotland Runt had been a real statement against a lot of good boats, and to be honest the Baltic Sea Race entry list looked a bit thin by comparison. The race was scheduled on the same dates as the ORCi Europeans in Klaipėda, and many of the Baltic boats had gone there instead. Our impression was also that RORC and the local organizers weren’t quite pulling in the same direction when it came to promoting the event. Anyhow. In the end 21 boats started in IRC, seven of them double-handed.

Still, there were boats we very much wanted to beat. J/121 Jolene above all, since they’ve been a benchmark for several seasons now. And a couple of the boats from Gotland Runt, JPK 10.30 Spirit and the Figaro 2 Amazigh, were probably keen on a rematch…

The delivery from Stockholm/Bullandö to Helsinki went well, with stops at Örö, Barösund and NJK before we ended up in downtown Helsinki.

The theme, of course, was saunas, and we now have the beginnings of a Blur ranking. The Finnish archipelago also left us wanting more, and we’ll happily come back with a boat better suited to archipelago cruising (separate blog post on that coming shortly).

We also used the delivery to compare the weather models in the area. We’ve been hacking on some AI-based tools over the summer, and the first version ran during Gotland Runt. Now it was time for an updated one. In general, the models did well, and we alternated between FMI Harmonie, ICON-EU, MET Nordic, and ECMWF. In light and medium wind, they all agreed, but every one of them also tended to underestimate the wind once it came above 20 knots. We expected FMI to excel, but ICON was closest to reality.

During the week, several forecasts had shown 35+ knots, but by the skippers’ briefing things had settled around 20-25 knots for the beat across to Sweden, and then 25-35 knots and up to 2.4 m significant wave height NW of Hiiumaa on the way back after rounding Gotland.

We also planned on eating well.

The start

The start area west of Suomenlinna offered perfect conditions: sun and 14 knots from 218 (SW). We nailed the start at the windward end, and then the race committee called it off… WTF! Apparently someone had lost track of the countdown.

Second attempt was less successful: a perfect OCS, three or four seconds before the gun. It’s super important to get away first when you’re about to sail 600-plus miles 🙂

We managed to sail through the fleet fairly quickly anyway. First Pär and Nadine in the slowest boat in the fleet; Albin Nova Team Mobline. They were the first boat to throw in the towel after four hours of beating.

Here we pass the First 35 Bianco, who in the end took the class as the only finisher. The first leg down to Helsinki Lighthouse was upwind with a number of fixed marks. We started with J3.5 since we knew the wind should pick up, and struggled a bit when it dropped to 10-11 knots. But overall, we had good pace.

The perfect boat for this race: Linda Goddard’s Swan 53 Bedouin. After the race, she said:

“The conditions were challenging, and I’m happy to be back on land… The Baltic Sea’s short, sharp waves during the first 24 hours really surprised us. They were unlike anything we’ve experienced on bigger seas, so it was a great learning experience for the whole team.”

Leg 1: Helsinki to Hanko – the first test

Once we got out to sea, the models pointed to the wind ticking right. We tacked immediately and stayed on the right-hand side along with most of the others. Jolene, Spirit, Amazigh and C-Me appeared to be thinking along much the same lines.

We also managed to sail past Spirit after a couple of hours and were now first on the water in IRC 2.

The first boats to fall victim to the TSS was Jolene and Bianco. Jolene cut the corner a bit too tight and sadly decided to retire. Bianco just went through the middle and got the mandatory 3-hour penalty.

The day’s fight, somewhat unexpectedly, was with the Sydney 40 Rush and the Arcona 460 Stora Blå. They sailed past us several times, yet somehow we were still ahead of them at Alma.

Dinner time!

The wind peaked at 21 knots with 26-knot gusts at 16:00, TWD backing 217 to 255 through the afternoon and then swinging back to 214 by 23:00. We were the first boat in our group to tack west after the first TSS, and we think we timed it pretty well. Leaving the fleet is always a risk, but our routing was pretty clear. We ended up a bit too close to the rocks south of Hankö to get full leverage, but still extended on both Spirit and Amazigh.

We were super happy with the first 12 hours, sticking to the big plan, playing the shifts, pushing hard and trusting our boat speed. Being third on the water after Swan 53 Bedouin and First 40 C-Me in a 33-footer wasn’t bad.

Leg 2: The crossing to Almagrundet – the heavy bit

The second morning the wind picked up. From 04:00 the wind built steadily, 17 knots at 06:00, 20-21 knots median from 08:00 to 11:00, peaking at 23.5 kn median and 30-knot gusts around lunch.

Direction 250 backing to 212 over the morning, so the crossing was a long port tack against a building sea. During the afternoon, TWA opened to 42-44 as we could crack off toward the mark.

As many others have said, the big issue was the sea state with short and very steep waves. We were sailing fast under autopilot, and the boat really likes a bit of wind. But we were constantly taking big waves over the deck, and slamming was terrible. I was sure something would break.

We’ve had similar legs in the Rolex Middle Sea Race as well as on several returns from Bermuda, but this felt more relentless.

After tacking west, we decided to take a reef in the main, then when the wind built, we took both a reef in the J3.5 and a deep reef in the main. Still going fast, but easier to cope with the waves.

We even treated ourselves to dinner. Not bad.

Almagrundet – the decision

Somewhere on the crossing, maybe a hundred miles out from Alma, we both started asking ourselves the question every offshore sailor knows: is this worth it, what are we doing out here, and is this even a race anymore? Neither of us said it out loud for a while. When we did, the answer came fast, because we’d been carrying it separately for hours.

Every model told the same story: upwind in a lot of breeze to the north tip of Gotland, a bit more variety round Hoburgen, then a hard NW reach in 20-30 knots with a lot more in the gusts down the last two legs. 430 nm of it. Boat fine, crew fine, nothing broken. Just no good reason to keep going that we could make ourselves believe in.

At 23:15 we pulled the plug.

Was it the right decision?

We dedicated a separate blog post to this and the discussions we’ve had afterward: “Learnings from retiring”.

And we were not alone: Amazigh was already pointing at her home port a few hours before Alma and reported RET at 23:36, Spirit at 00:10, Stora Blå at 02:02. Four boats, same forecast, same decision within three hours.

Huge congrats to everyone who completed the race. Five boats out of 21 finished, and each of them earned it. C-Me is probably the toughest crew we have in Sweden, and Bianco showed what Finnish sisu can do: two-handed, all the way round, in that weather, and a class win despite a penalty. Bedouin sailed a superb race up front, and Schlüssel von Bremen and Rush ground it out to the finish. There is nothing lucky about being on that list.

Thanks to RORC and the Finnish organizers for putting on a proper offshore race in the Baltic. We’re sorry we couldn’t give you a fuller finish list. Next time.

What we learned – and tips for next time

On the weather models

Very happy with our setup here. FMI Harmonie and ECMWF were the two we trusted initially; MET Nordic as context; then ICON turned out to be the best poast Hankö. The global/AI models (aifs, aigfs, gfs) ranked last the first afternoon and were dropped. Since Gotland Runt, we’ve done even more work on ranking models versus our actual logged data, and this gives us confidence to play offense.

One: we sailed the boat fast

Pretty close to target upwind in 15-23 kn for 36 hours, with some discounts for slamming, and we were the third boat on the water at Alma.

Two: routing every 2-3 hours, and it paid

Seven archived routing sessions in 26 hours, plus more we ran for finer positioning around TSS and did not save. The Alma decision was made on three models that agreed. Whatever else you think of the decision, it was made on good information.

Three: sail inventory in a breeze

First race with the J3.5 and it works ok from 12 knots in flat water. Real crossover between J1.5 and J3.5 is probably 14-16 knots and 12-18 if you’re pushing it. Reef works great even if we need to change the halyard from a halyard lock on the fully hoisted jib to a normal one when it’s reefed. Alternatively, we could make a strop. Also need a better way to collect the foot of the sail, as we had on the J/111: chock-cord strops that are easy to attach in waves.

Reefing the main also worked well. The only issue is managing all the loose sail when going to the deep second reef. Either we fit lazyjacks, or we spend some quality time rolling the bottom half into a tidy package. Not an enviable job to leeward in fruity conditions.

If you’ve sailed Gotland Runt, you know that Almagrundet means you’re nearly done.

Finish, Sandhamn, beer, Värdshusbiff and some well-deserved sleep.

Twenty years of conditioning.

The Baltic Sea Race course put that exact mark a third of the way into the course. With 430 nm of heavy upwind and tight reaching still to go. So when we bore away at Alma after 36 hours of racing, leading IRC Two, two-handed and FinRating, we could practically hear the music from Seglarhotellet.

Homer covered this three thousand years ago.

The sirens’ trick is that they sing your song. Odysseus knew willpower would lose, so he didn’t rely on it: wax in the crew’s ears, himself lashed to the mast, standing orders to ignore the captain when the captain begs. Behavioral economists later named it a Ulysses contract.

We didn’t have one.

But we had our car parked at Bullandö Marina.

We’ve since done a fairly brutal debrief; tracking data, weather archive, and an uncomfortable amount of psychology. Our conclusion: the decision was probably right for this race.

But the decision making process was wrong in ways that would bite much harder in a race that mattered more.

Here’s what we learned:

1. Decide what the race is for. Before the start. Asked separately how we’d actually treated BSR, we both said ~80 % “we’re here to win”. Asked how we wish we’d defined it: 40 % racing, the rest would be experiment and training. When the fleet collapsed and the best shorthanded teams retired, the 80%-frame made retiring rational.

2. Chart the sirens along with the course. Every course has places where quitting is cheap; a home harbor or a familiar marina near a mark. If the course rounds something your brain files under “finish”, expect the music. The kicker: we had identified this exact mechanism before the race…

3. The conditional pact IS the decision. Somewhere mid-morning we agreed: “if the forecast still looks like this at Alma, we’re done.” That sentence felt like postponing the decision. It was the decision. From that moment, every forecast check asked “do we get to stop?” instead of “should we?”.

4. Classify before you argue: RED, AMBER, GREEN. RED = safety, damage, dangerous fatigue: you stop, no philosophy required. AMBER = the sporting equation genuinely changed: analyse it. GREEN = cold, wet, bored, unmotivated, far from home: not a reason. That’s the sport you entered.

5. Double-handed consensus comes fast. Too fast. Both of you doubting privately, neither wanting to be the weak one. Then one careful “are you thinking what I’m thinking?” And the answer is relief. Two private doubts become one joint decision in minutes, and it feels like truth because you agree. Nobody made the case for continuing.

6. Nobody will hold you accountable. That’s the trap. We posted our RET with a screenshot of the leaderboard. 188 reactions: “wise”, “smart”, “love the honesty”. One single critical comment. Retiring while leading pays out socially like a win, at a fraction of the cost, which quietly teaches your brain to do it again.

7. Sometimes retiring is right. So decide in advance which races deserve the grind. Annie Duke’s research says most people quit too late; walking away at the top is rare and sometimes optimal. The skill isn’t grit – it’s aim. We now carry a one-page decision contract: the frame in percentages, what success looks like without a podium, the sirens marked on the chart, and a protocol for the moment “should we retire?” comes up.

Worth remembering how the story ends: Odysseus got to hear the song and sail past. That’s the actual goal. Not a crew that never retires, but a crew that knows why it continue and why it retires.

Decision contract — template v0.9

5. Retirement classes:

• RED = safety or capability: injury, illness, dangerous fatigue, critical gear failure, weather outside our margins. We stop. No discussion needed.
• AMBER = the sporting or strategic value of the race has genuinely changed. May be examined, but only through the protocol below.
• GREEN = cold, wet, bored, unmotivated, a long way to go, missing the shower. Never a reason on its own. This is the sport we entered.

During the race: when “should we retire?” comes up without a RED

a. No conditional pacts. A sentence like “if the forecast still looks like this at X, we retire” IS a retirement decision.

b. No consensus in the first conversation. Separately, in writing, five minutes: my reasons, each classed RED / AMBER / GREEN, plus “if I were deciding alone, my probability of retiring is __ %”.

c. Steelman both directions, out loud. The best possible case for continuing AND for retiring.

d. Goal test: “Does retiring affect what we set out to achieve in points 1–3?”

e. Decide no earlier than one full watch cycle after (b). Until then the plan stands; the default is continue. The burden of proof is on retiring: “What relevant change means this contract no longer applies?” If that question can’t be answered concretely, the answer is GREEN.

After the race

f. One line in the debrief: did the contract hold? Was the question raised, and was the protocol followed? What changes in this template for next time?

I actually listened to her first book, Thinking in Bets, just a few weeks ago when we thought about our decision system around weather models.

Should have read this one instead.

Annie Duke played poker for a living before she started writing about how people make bad decisions. Her main finding is that most people quit far too late, not too early. Leaving feels like admitting the whole thing was a mistake, so we don’t. Grit gets all the credit; knowing when to walk away is the harder skill.

Det ser ut att bli ett klassiskt Tjörn Runt med kryss söderut innan vinden drar på sydväst och upp till 10 m/s fram på dagen. Till slut 197 båtar vilket är en handfull färre än förra året.

Som vanligt fördelar jag favorittrycket lite lagom:

1. Flerskrovsbåtar (09:00)

Optixmarine (M32, Anton Karlsson) Kommer runt Tjörn innan kaffet i följebåtarna kallnat, men inte riktigt rekordvinkel på vinden?

Pitti Platsch (Hobie Cat 18, Jesper Stigberg) Lägst SRS i klassen men spikar precis som förra året.

2. Kölbåtar (09:10)

Fjorton H-båtar som just värmt upp med VM i samma vatten. 57 båtar och Flavio Favini som världsmästare. Flera av Tjörn Runt-anmälda var med, så startlistan går faktiskt att seeda:

Mariett (NOR 99, Eskild Larsen) är bäste Tjörn Runt-deltagaren på VM med en åttondeplats, inklusive en tredjeplats i näst sista racet. Förhandsfavorit, oavsett vad Stenungsundsgänget tycker om saken.

Garbo (SWE 609, Bengt Ramne) var 12:a på VM och stundtals riktigt vass (en fjärdeplats i race 2). Att VM-formen sitter i efter bara en vecka är ett rimligt antagande. GKSS-flaggan förpliktar.

Freja (SWE 541, Fredrik Kullenberg) var 17:e på VM och bästa STSS-båt bland Tjörn Runt-anmälda, med en sjätteplats som topnotering. Hemmavatten i dubbel bemärkelse nu: både VM-banan och Tjörn Runt-banan. Slut på ursäkter.

Men storfavorit är som alltid Oscar (Accent, Elin Oskarsson) där båten hittar runt banan på egen hand.

3. Kölbåtar (09:20)

Tolv Expresser med historik att luta sig mot. Förra året tog Expresserna fyra av de sex första platserna i gruppen, men de två som stod högst på listan, Tomas Movin och Michael Collberg, saknas i årets startlista. Collis var väl den siste som vunnit totalt i Express? Tronen står alltså tom, och arvsordningen ser ut så här:

Wilma (SWE 2015, Eric Simonsson, BKSS) är bästa återvändande Express, trea i fjol efter Movin och Collberg. Med de två före honom borta är det här på pappret hans år. Sådant trashtalk brukar dock vara det säkraste sättet att sluta femma.

x (SWE 290, Henrik Stålheim) var fyra i fjol, en dryg halvminut efter Simonsson på korrigerat. Har bytt hemmavatten till Vänersborg men lär inte ha glömt vägen runt Tjörn. Att båten heter “x” gör den dessutom omöjlig att snacka skit om på ett meningsfullt sätt, vilket kanske är poängen.

Och en varning till samtliga: Whatever (Sonar, Joachim Stadig) slog hälften av Expresserna i fjol som femma i gruppen. Ingen Sonar har någonsin vunnit Tjörn Runt totalt, så motivationen finns. Favorit till att vinna klassen igen precis som 2019.

4. Kölbåtar (09:30)

IOD-flottan från Stenungsund = tio stycken International One Design. Det här är inte en kappsegling, det är något viktigare. Är Urban Ristorp fortfarande favorit?

Emma (Soling, Anders Åhman, Saltsjöbadens BK) är regerande gruppsegrare, och årets givna måltavla. Solingen är dessutom ingen sentimental gäst i sammanhanget: totalsegrare i Tjörn Runt både 1969 och 1988.

5. Kölbåtar (09:40)

Det här är gruppen där expertisen går bet. Tre helt olika vinnarprofiler, tre helt olika båttyper, och ett SRS-spann så tajt att det avgörs av vem som får finliret att stämma.

No Name (A22, Staffan Cederlöf, StSS)  har seglat runt Tjörn så länge någon kan minnas, tog hem priset för bästa doublehanded i fjol på sin Compis, och har nu uppgraderat till den ultimata långsmala raketen. En A22 med högst SRS i gruppen är ett tydligt statement: nu ska det gå fort på riktigt. Frågan är bara om raketen och Tjörn-rutinen hittar varandra redan första året? Nytt vapen brukar kosta en säsong eller tre.

Älvan (Smaragd, Johan Davidsson, LSS) är på pappret troligaste segraren i det här vädret? Davidsson vann Classic-banan 2017. Smaragden är för övrigt Tjörn Runts kanske mest pålitliga totalvinnar-båt genom åren; Sandberg tre gånger + Granhed 2022.

Njord (Melges 20, Søren Dalsgaard Rasmussen, Vallensbæk) var tvåa i klassen förra året och tillbaka för att göra klart ärendet. En Melges 20 är snabbast i gruppen den dag det blåser rätt, men och långsammast i fältet den dag det inte gör det. Dansken har med andra ord redan satsat allt på en väderprognos.

Grit (J/9, Mikael Bratt, GKSS)  har vunnit sin klass här tidigare och ser fram emot kryssen. En J/9 marknadsförs som daysailer, men verkar vara en sleeper. Ytterligare ett skäl att kalla gruppen omöjlig att tippa.

6. Kölbåtar (09:50)

Här behövs ingen krystad dramaturgi, förra årets resultatlista skriver den själv:

J/80-duellen: Veloce mot Han Solo. Federico Garofalo vann gruppen i fjol – double-handed dessutom. Fyra i fjol: alltid snabbe Fredrik Roos, som i skall undvika bleken. Full transparens: Roos är en del av Blur-teamet, så neutraliteten i den här förhandstippningen är exakt noll. Han Solo mot en italienare med titel att försvara…

X-332-duellen. Bertil Rohlen och Per Alexandersson var tvåa och trea i fjol, skilda åt av 43 sekunder på korrigerat efter fem timmars segling. Rohlen seglar med full besättning, Alexandersson double-handed, och båda slutade före båda J/80:orna. Revansch- och positioneringsbehoven är med andra ord jämnt fördelade över hela kvartetten.

X-99-duellen: eXile mot Xstream. Kellström var bäst av 99:orna i fjol som femma, i år utmanas han av Anton Larssons eXile från Stenungsund. Samma båt, samma vatten, en knapp hundradel i SRS-skillnad — det här avgörs av trim och beslut, ingenting annat.

Outsidern: Sleipnir (Concorde 38, Jesper Fog, Kaløvig). När båtarna ovan låser fast varandra i taktiska småkrig kommer dansken med det enklaste argumentet av alla: vattenlinje

7. Kölbåtar (10:00)

Lady Godiva (Dominant 105, Anders Dahlsjö, Lerkil) är storfavorit, och det är inte ens kontroversiellt. Fyra totalsegrar i Tjörn Runt: 2004, 2017, 2018 och senast 2024. Ingen aktiv seglare i startfältet har facit i närheten, och vädret ser ut att bli precis sådant som Dominanten och Dahlsjö trivs i. Alla andra i gruppen seglar om andraplatsen tills motsatsen bevisats och skulle han vinna igen är han uppe i fem, ensam i historieböckerna. Ingen press.

Vindrus (XP-33, Jesper Folkesson, De Tio Öarna) är båten vars optimeringsfrågor blev ett helt nybygge i Italien. Vindrus är såld, Costiera 353 tar form i Fano, och det här kan vara sista varvet runt Tjörn med gamla båten. Sålda båtar brukar för övrigt segla som befriade – inget att förlora, inget att vara rädd om. Eller?

Melges 24-hotet: JARVIS och Nn. Två av gruppens bästa team. Jonas Berntsson kommer dessutom direkt från en fjärdeplats på H-båts-VM på hemmavattnen, så formen är det inget fel på. Problemet är prognosen: en Melges 24 med SRS 1.046 behöver rätt vinklar för att leverera. Men kan man plana från Klädesholmens och hem kan man vara med i snacket.

8. Kölbåtar (10:00)

NIKE (Shogun 43, Martin Angsell, KSSS)  Stockholmsmaskinen är på promotionturné på Västkusten och vill garanterat visa vad den går för. Åtta man, SRS 1.257 och ett namn som förpliktar: just do it, som det heter. Ingen press alltså – bara hela fjordens blickar och ett rykte att förvalta.

Flash V (First 40, Erik Krister, Sandefjord) är stabilast i klassen, med nio man ombord och den sortens rutin som inte gör spektakulära misstag. Måste man tippa någon är det norrmännen som har lägst odds: en First 40 seglar hem sitt SRS-tal i de flesta förhållanden, och de vet exakt hur man gör det tråkigt för alla andra.

Draklunne (Bavaria 38 Match, Mattias Wilson, GKSS)  trivs i precis de här förhållandena, och en Bavaria Match med rätt genuatrim är betydligt elakare än ryktet. Lokal kännedom plus rätt väder är en kombination som brukar straffa tillresta favoriter.

Mini Ravenger (Club Swan 36, Juan Carlos Oliva)har högst SRS bland enskroven och ett namn som låter som en Transformers-skurk. Sweetaste båten på linjen, och de vet om det. Frågan är om det räcker hela vägen runt Tjörn.

Det är kul när folk i Blur-teamet seglar nya race.

Här kommer en rapport från Johan Fredriksson, som rundat Long Island.

Kul också att Josh Reisberg i J/120 Abilyn spikade DH-klassen. Vi hängde en delö när vi seglare Bermuda 1-2 mot varandra.

Att starta framför Frihetsgudinnan har alltid funnits på min bucket list. Så när jag sprang på Ken Wisdom – hans Arcona 435 var jag med på under ARC 2024 -och fick frågan “Would you like to come and join us? We need to be 8 in the crew” tog betänketiden ungefär två sekunder.

Detta var sex dagar före start, så det blev bråttom med flygbokning och packning av Gore-Tex. Att yngsta dottern kunde följa med gjorde beslutet ännu enklare.

Around Long Island Race (ALIR) körs årligen, och det här var 49:e upplagan. Välkomstfesten satte nivån direkt: fri bar och italiensk buffé med en ostbricka i XXL-format.

Banan är enkel att beskriva: runda Long Island om babord, 207 sjömil fågelvägen. Starten var desto svårare. Två knops ström och väldigt puffigt mellan Staten Island och Battery Park. Vi lyckades precis undvika lä-båtens ankarlina och kryssade långsamt söderut med Frihetsgudinnan om ena sidan och Long Island om andra. Planen var att hålla vänsterkanten, eftersom strömmen satte in mot Manhattan med 1–3 knop i den lätta vinden. In på det grunda vattnet, bara. Notera också vårt försök att bygga AWS med Code 0 – det kändes i alla fall snabbt.

I vår klass fanns sex ORC-båtar, allt från J/121 Habiru – nytt ställ varje år, till och med barlasttankarna urplockade – till First 50 Crocodile, plus lite annat skoj.

Första kvällens solnedgång sitter kvar: Downtown i motljus med Chrysler Building och Empire State Building i siluett på avstånd. Sedan dragrace österut med J/121:an 2–3 sjömil framför. Via AIS och trackingsystemet YB kunde vi se att vi höll ganska jämna steg med proffsbesättningen.

Morgonen dag två bjöd på mycket lätt vind. Vår game plan var att gå nära land för att undvika ström, men det visade sig finnas mer ström än väntat precis utanför Hampton Bays. Tre stora valar och flera stim delfiner höll humöret uppe ombord.

Jag åkte upp i masten för att se var vinden fanns, och hämtade faktiskt hem en del av försprånget till J/121:an – men på slutet, före rundningen av Montauk, hittade de mer vind och drog ifrån igen till ungefär sex sjömil.

Mer än halva racet återstod, så det var bara att pusha hela tiden och inte bli sittande med fel segel. Från J2 till J1.5, vidare till Code 0, tillbaka till J1.5, och så vidare. Bra killar ombord och kanonmat underlättar. Vaktschemat körde vi 3 timmar på, 3 timmar standby och 3 timmar off med helig vila under däck – samma upplägg som vi använt på Blur under bland annat Middle Sea Race.

Tidvattnet rinner ut ur Long Island Sound med 2–3 knop när det är som starkast, så det gäller att hålla sig i strömlä nära Plum Gut. Här har man genom åren sett båtar kasta dragg för att inte åka åt fel håll. Andra natten stod vinden ganska länge, men efter midnatt låg vi och stampade i 1,5 knops SOG. Kom igen nu, gubbs. 😊

Vindskiftet från norr kom tidig morgon och fyllde förstås så att J/121:an kunde hålla undan. De gick i mål någon timme före oss, efter 43 timmars segling.

Vi hade fått låna en boj av båten Golden Eye (mint condition) och firade med bad och bärs. Prisutdelningen hölls söndag eftermiddag i underbar atmosfär på Sea Cliff Yacht Club.

Resultat är kanske inte det viktigaste med kappsegling.

Men att de stämmer, och att de kommer medans man fortfarande sitter i sittbrunnen och bryr sig – det är värt mer än vi låtsas om. I vilken annan sport väntar man ett par dygn på att få veta hur det gick?

Arrangörer brukar säga att det är krångligt och tar tid. Sant.

Men det går, om man vill.

På Marstrand Big Boat bestämde vi oss för att göra resultatrapportering till en grej. Med rätt setup kunde vi läsa upp resultat på VHF mellan seglingarna, ute på havet. Seglarna trodde inte det var sant. Vi hade också satt som mål att varje båt skulle få utskrivna resultatlistor i handen innan de hann kliva i land, och även det gick med lite logistik och en printer.

Dessutom visade det sig finnas en poäng i att hela teamet tittar på samma papperslista i stället för att var och en sitter böjd över sin mobil.

Nordön Race Week kör Google Sheets. Tävlingsledaren matar in målgångstider och alla seglare ser listan sorteras i realtid. Cred till Thomas Ottosson för. Ett kalkylark och viljan att visa vad man håller på med. Mer behövs inte.

Vad har hänt 2026?

I år har någonting hänt.

Eller snarare: en massa saker har hänt på olika ställen som tillsammans bildar ett mönster.

ORC Double Handed World Championship blev den första stora internationella smällen kring Weather Routing Scoring. Tyska GAIA gick i mål som tvåa och klassades sist efter WRS-korrigering. Protesten avslogs. Men diskussionen som följde handlade inte om räknefel — den handlade om att scoringmodellen kan producera utfall som seglare uppfattar som orimliga, utan att någon kan förklara varför.

Færderseilasen lyckades med konststycket att ha två olika resultatproblem samtidigt. Först administrativa fel: felregistrerade målgångstider och priser till fel båtar. Sedan en separat WRS-diskussion där KNS själva meddelade att valet av scoringsystem ska utvärderas: “Vi har fått tilbakemeldinger på en del feil i resultatene, og må bare beklage på det sterkeste at det har blitt slik.”

Sandhamn Open hade svårt att få fram resultat överhuvudtaget. Fyra timmar efter sista målgång kom en screenshot. De officiella resultaten dök upp dagen efter.

Gotland Runt funkade generellt bra – ända fram till prisutdelningen, där ORC-pokalen gick till fel team. Kalabalik på scen innan det rättades till. Man hade tittat på hur ORC-båtarna rankats i SRS.

Newport Bermuda Race toppade alltihop. Ett programvarufel i beräkningen av Forecast Time Correction Factor gav felaktiga resultat, flera omräkningar och en försenad prisutdelning. US Sailing var ovanligt öppna: “US Sailing recognizes that the software-related issue affecting the corrected-time calculations has had a significant impact on competitors.”

Så där står vi.

Vi har ambitiösa arrangörer och funktionärer. Vi har kommittéer som sitter och funderar på sådana här saker under vinterhalvåret. Vi har mer teknik och datorkraft än någonsin…

Men också en säsong full av sena, felaktiga, omräknade och obegripliga resultat.

Sex frågor jag inte kan släppa

Har vi blivit sämre trots bättre teknik? En klubbtävling på 80-talet med papper och penna levererade snabbare än flera stora event 2026. Den ekvationen stämmer inte?

Är scoringmodellerna för komplexa? När varken seglare, funktionärer eller jury kan förklara varför en båt vann – vad har vi då byggt? Observera att det inte handlar om matematiska fel. Modellen kan räkna helt rätt och ändå misslyckas, för att ingen förstår eller accepterar svaret.

Varför är resultatet en black box? Nordön visar att motsatsen går utmärkt. Så varför publiceras inte indata, mellanresultat och beräkningar löpande? Vad är det vi skyddar, egentligen?

Kan resultaten reproduceras? Om två personer tar samma målgångstider, samma väderdata och samma mätbrev – får de då exakt samma resultatlista? Om svaret är nej finns inget förtroende att bygga på.

Vad är rimlig ledtid? Klubbsegling inom tio minuter, SM inom en halvtimme, offshore inom några timmar. Orimliga krav? Eller har vi bara vant oss vid att vänta?

Hur mycket komplexitet tål sporten? Hela handikappidén bygger på att seglare accepterar att de inte alltid vinner på vattnet. Det är ett rätt stort mentalt åtagande redan där. Gränsen går inte där modellen räknar fel – den går där resultatet slutar kännas begripligt. Och jag tror vi passerat den gränsen?

Vad är egentligen viktigast?

Att resultatet är matematiskt så korrekt som möjligt?

Att det är begripligt?

Att det går att verifiera?

Att seglarna litar på det?

Vi har optimerat stenhårt för det första. De tre andra åkte ut på vägen.

Och en enklare modell som alla förstår slår antagligen en perfekt modell som ingen litar på.

Hej Peter,

Jag seglar och hobbyrejsar min Xp33 Tärna med stort nöje. Jag seglar nästan uteslutande shorthand, och anpassar gradvis båten för detta. Just nu är fokus på ergonomi för rorsman. Jag har precis gjort om arrangemanget för trim av vagn, fintrim storsegel och akterstag så att de är enkelt åtkomliga för rorsman sittandes på styrplatsen.

Xp33ans sittbrunn är generös, men vid längre sträcker med lite stökigare förhållanden har jag svårt att hitta position där jag kan sitta säkert utan att det blir jobbigt. Det kokar ned till två sammanlänkade problem; 

1) Vid krängning (särskilt när det är lite sjö) vill mantåget trycka ned rorsman i sittbrunn

2) För att motverka detta får en försöka sitta så långt in mot centrum som möjligt, vilket ger för liten sittyta och dessutom kommer en för nära fotstöden, vilket blir jobbigt för benen.

Nu är jag på jakt efter inspiration, tankar, åsikter på temat; Vad är viktigt för att få god ergonomi för rorsman på en rorkultsbåt? Vilken båt har den skönaste styrplatsen? Vad bör en undvika? 

Är justerbara rörfotstöd som på Figaro 3 nåt att ha (eller blir det mest snubbelrisk)? 

Är eluppvärmd sittdyna som på Aspect 45 ett måste? 

Är JPK 1050 übergrova gummimönster flip eller flop?

Every spring you haul the boat and face the truth: whatever speed you had last season is living under a layer of slime and barnacles. So you grind it back and start over. No rocket science. Just willingness to spend time in the shed. Or to get help.

If you race offshore in the Baltic, Gotland Runt is a rite of passage. Like the Fastnet, the Bermuda Race or the Sydney–Hobart, it’s one of those races you have to do at some point, and everyone walks away with their own story.

I did my first one in 1991, on a tricked-out Sweden Yachts 38. I suppose that was also my first proper pro gig – Pär Lindforss and I were brought in to make the boat perform. We came second in class and the owner was delighted. Since then I’ve done it on just about everything, from an Albin Nova to a Swan 65 (I’ll admit I really enjoyed having my own cabin and a chef aboard).

And I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with the race. It’s not long enough to get you into the “600-mile bubble,” and the legs have felt too short to make any real strategic gains – yet still long enough to get boring. KSSS captured it pretty well in an article this year, What is the deal with Gotland Runt, really?, which calls offshore racing “perhaps the world’s most uncomfortable way to get completely exhausted.” The line that stuck with me, though, is the one that sums up doublehanded racing perfectly: “Onboard, the individual is erased. You become completely dependent on the person next to you making the right decision in the middle of the night while you yourself are asleep.”

But this year was different. Full on from the gun, with three genuinely challenging weather transitions to solve along the way.

For us, Peter Gustafsson and Mattias Bodlund, it was our first real offshore race with the J/99, and a good chance to find out whether all the preparation and the new sail inventory actually added up.

It turned out to be one of the most fun races we’ve done offshore.

Preparations and the start

We used our delivery from Gothenburg to Stockholm as preparation, sailing a lot of it in race mode – about 500 miles, non-stop, first with three aboard and then two-handed from Simrishamn. We tested the boat, our watch system, sleep, food. It made us feel genuinely well prepared, and it also shrank the mental size of the thing: 350 miles around Gotland feels a lot more manageable once you’ve just done a delivery like that.

These days I try not to look at the forecast too early. I used to study it days out, and the only thing it ever bought me was stress: first a few days of worrying it would blow too hard, then a few days of worrying it wouldn’t blow at all. An emotional rollercoaster with no upside. So now we’ve built a little tool that logs observations and compares them against the different weather models, which means we don’t miss the data – but I deliberately leave it alone until three or four days before a race. Then I look at what actually happened over the past week, which models seem to be tracking reality, and how the macro picture looks.

For this year’s Gotland Runt the macro picture was clear: a huge high had parked itself over a Europe that had been baking for a week, with record temperatures in Sweden too. The one thing trying to disturb it was a low over Iceland, but the high held its ground beautifully. In a flat high like that the isobars spread out, you get little wind, and – importantly – there are no stable low-pressure tracks to forecast against. Weather just forms. So the fundamental uncertainty was which models would be right: we had several running in parallel, and none of them quite agreed. That left three unanswered questions:

• Should we expect a sea breeze on the east side of Gotland?
• How easily would we be able to switch from offshore night tactics to daytime mode closer to shore?
• What would happen with the trough that had already hit Copenhagen and southern Sweden with record thunderstorms?

We’d been through this before. The year before, a similar system had threatened the start and Race Management made the right call to postpone – a front came through with +20 m/s in Sandhamn and total chaos. This year looked identical, so we expected delays. They came. The first postponement pushed the start two hours; the second, as the rain intensified and lightning lit the harbour, pushed it to 17:00. We sat on the boat watching the radar, adjusting mentally with each announcement. By 15:00 the trough had passed and the rain eased. The wind on the back of it was light and uncertain, but at least startable.

We motored out to the line, and at 17:00 we finally got to sail.

The start

The doublehanded fleet started first, 33 boats on the line, and because it was so soft everyone stayed close. It was a running start eastward from the new start line south of Sandhamn – a bit of a scramble, with maybe 60% taking the favored port gybe and the other 40% holding starboard for right of way.

We managed to thread our way through and find some clear space in a group of boats at the northern end of the line.

A few boats got away nicely: the XP-44 Xar from Skåne, big, fast, symmetric kite; a Whitbread 30; a couple of others with pace in the light. We came away okay, maybe sixth or seventh of 33 at the first gybe, which we were happy with.

The start isn’t the most important thing in a 350-mile race, but it’s still nice to be in it from the gun and not have to claw your way back.

Leg 1: Start → Svenska Högarna

Sun 28/06 17:00 → Sun 28/06 21:44 CET. Weather: Light to moderate southwest, 11 knots (6–13) and gradually backing after morning rain. No frontal weather yet, pressure flat around 1013–1014 hPa.

After the opening run and a short jib reach, it turned into a long run north toward Svenska Högarna.

We ran a geometric S2 and did the leg generally well, passing a few boats and holding level with others.

This is where it became clear who we’d be fighting: right from here we were sitting very close to the J/11S Sleeper (the shorthanded version of the J/111), XP-33 Tärna, plus the usual Figaros and a few other very active Stockholm doublehanded boats we’d end up racing the whole way round.

We also had an early eye on the Pogo 36 Boxer – a boat that’s gone well for years and knows what it’s doing, but a lot faster than us.

Boxer pulled away in the freshening breeze and led on the water, Figaro 2 Amazigh second. We rounded Svenska Högarna in third, at 21:44 – just ahead of Tärna at 21:46. A little bad luck with the wind shifts right at the end didn’t go our way, but on corrected time we’d actually sailed the leg fastest in class, and led on handicap. Happy with that.

Leg 2: Svenska Högarna → Fårö

Sun 28/06 21:44 → Mon 29/06 11:35 CET. Long night leg. SW 10 knots veered gradually to NW (+90°) and died away in a dawn lull down to 4 knots near Gotska Sandön. Pressure crept upward (1014→1016) as the high took over.

Passing JPK 1030 Tenet.

A long starboard leg down toward the north end of Gotland. We started out with jib, then code, then alternated jib and code as the wind came and went. Some boats had it easier than others: the XP-33 went well against us here because they had a narrower Code – a 65% half-width, which rates very well in SRS. We carry a 75% IRC code, technically bigger, but the shape isn’t optimal for the angles we had. Against the JPK and a few others, though, we did well and pulled away.

Being too close to Gotska Sandön cost Joyride, Tenet and a few other boats the race. Amazigh was quickest on the water through the dark. Tärna found a better lane and sailed past us early morning. They rounded Fårö third to our fourth, and won the leg on corrected time too, though we stayed close. Third on handicap now.

Leg 3: Fårö → Östergarn

Mon 29/06 11:35 → Mon 29/06 18:00 CET. West wind backed hard to SE and then SSW and collapsed to a 4-knot hole mid-leg before a new southern gradient filled in.

This was the first real transition, and our best leg of the race.

Coming in toward Fårö we could see on AIS that the boats ahead had suddenly slowed, with a lot of them tucking in tight to land and a few sitting completely stopped further out to sea. The rule of thumb, especially in daylight, is that you want to be in toward Gotland to catch any sea breeze, so we committed fairly hard to staying close to the coast – or at least staying right of the fleet and not drifting too far east.

Through a series of small transitions with bands of calm to punch through, the boats furthest west and closest to the coast were clearly the ones going best.

We also knew that down at Östergarn it might fill in from the southwest, so we badly wanted to stay right – to be among the first into the new wind.

Just north of Östergarn there was a very clear transition: everyone ahead had to tack to get through the sound inside Östergarn, while by the time we arrived, first Tärna and then we could hook straight into fresh breeze. I think managing that one transition well is a big reason we placed so high overall. On corrected time we sailed the leg fastest in class through the collapse; on the water Tärna still held us off and Boxer got punished hardest.

Leg 4: Östergarn → Hoburg

Mon 29/06 18:00 → Tue 30/06 01:07 CET. The passage — the turning point of the race. A trough passed during the evening: S 10 knots veered to NW and built toward 20 knots while pressure rose sharply (1016→1020).

On the far side of Östergarn it turned into a beat, and here we showed we had a small speed edge on Tärna. We caught them and passed, and were careful to stay right, because at some point the southwesterly would let us crack off toward Hoburg, and we absolutely wanted that shift before Tärna so we could use it to extend. So we had a proper tacking duel, tight in on land – we ducked them, they ducked us. Fantastic racing.

We got a little lucky and took the shift when we were furthest inshore, which bought us a couple of hundred metres.

Then a long leg south with code, very even with Tärna – sometimes a tenth or two to us, sometimes to them.

It lightened right up near Hoburg and turned into a beat that slowly built from 2–3 m/s to 7–8. It had gone dark by then, close to midnight, and this is where we discovered that the J/99 is a genuinely happy boat on this kind of beat. It felt great, and we pulled out a decent margin, which was fun.

The fast boats got paid in the fresh NW – Amazigh and Boxer quickest on the water, and Joyride actually won the leg on corrected time — but the thing that mattered was that we passed Tärna on the water at Hoburg (01:07 to their 01:15) and took third back. Second on handicap.

Looking back, we should have tacked in as soon as we had some decent breeze. You’ll quite often get lifted on starboard closer to land, and the Mumm 36 Shogun played that well. But we chose to stay with Tärna and consolidate our lead instead.

Leg 5: Hoburg → Visby

Tue 30/06 01:07 → Tue 30/06 08:04 CET. Post-frontal northwest. Steady W/NW 16 knots (12–20), steady direction and rising pressure toward 1022 hPa as the high-pressure ridge built – the hardest and most predictable weather of the race.

Here’s where I badly misjudged what came after Hoburg.

I’d run a bunch of routings and knew it would be a reach, and there was a debate about how good it would be. I had it up, but I never expected it to be that windy. So the plan had been to push hard to the rounding and then rest, eat, relax on the way up from Hoburg toward Visby. Instead we came round into 10 m/s at TWA 60–70; brutal, wet sailing where there was no resting and no eating, and we both had the feeling of, okay, we’re going to get soaked and stay soaked.

We talked about it: should we take a reef, go to the J3.5? Make it more comfortable? But the boat was flying. It felt like a great angle for us, just miserable, so we did another weather analysis, saw it would probably blow hard until around four in the morning, and decided to just grind it out – a couple of really overpowered hours before it would ease as we came up toward Stora Karlsö and bent in toward Visby.

Somewhere in there is the whole point of offshore sailing: there are stretches where you just want to quit, sell the boat and never touch the sea again, and this was one of them. Amazigh flew in the NW and won the leg. We held third on the water, stretched on Tärna and now moved ahead of them on corrected time too. Second into the return.

Leg 6: Visby → Almagrundet

Tue 30/06 08:04 → Wed 01/07 02:10 CET. Long light return. The high-pressure ridge suffocated the wind and it backed throughout the leg from W to SE (−133°) in just 4–11 knots. The decisive leg.

Exactly as forecast, the wind dropped as we came up on Visby. We could crack off – but our energy was completely gone, because the rest we’d planned simply hadn’t happened. We’d just gassed it the whole way. We looked at each other and wondered whether we had it in us. We got the code up, sailed in past the Visby buoy and started north.

Between Visby and Almagrundet we knew there’d be an interesting picture: the wind going from west to some flavour of southeast/east/northeast – something from a completely different direction – and obviously you badly want to nail that. It was also clear by now that the Figaro 2 Amazigh had gone brilliantly when it blew harder, so they were well ahead and leading the class comfortably. Our whole job on this leg was to close the gap to them intelligently.

For an hour or two we more or less just sailed straight around under Code while we worked to understand the weather, and we each got an hour’s sleep to be a bit sharper and think straight.

Then we went into attack mode.

It became a question of where and when that shift would happen. The routing looked very clear to me: at some point you’d cut a long way west to get the shift cleanly, then gybe and reach into Almagrundet in the new wind. We had one priority – minimise the distance to Amazigh – because we knew that if we could get within range and sail roughly the same weather as them, we had a good chance on corrected time.

Tärna was maybe an hour behind us, which felt reasonably safe. And, like every transition, we didn’t want to do this one half-heartedly. To get full value from a routing or a shift you have to commit fairly hard. There’s a version where you just sit on the rhumb line and take whatever weather you’re given, and a version where you’ve got a clear idea and commit to the corner. The common mistake is landing somewhere in between: not quite trusting the routing, not quite trusting the model, so you end up between the rhumb line and the optimal – which is often the worst of both. It feels safe, but it’s neither the shortest way nor of any real use in the weather.

We found several models that all said roughly the same thing, and settled on two we trusted – the Finnish one and a Nordic model. Both pointed the same way, and in hindsight we sailed almost exactly on those routing lines. When it lines up that well it’s extra satisfying. We chose not to go quite as far west as the routing wanted – that probably would have been faster to the finish – but our strategy was Amazigh and the gap to them, so we took maybe 80% out to the corner and then aimed hard at them. By the end of that manoeuvre we’d gone from 10–12 miles behind to 5–6, and it felt like we were now inside an hour, which would beat them on corrected time.

Nice to hear afterward from Odd Lindqvist and Roger Nilsson – both of whom have sailed Gotland Runt more times than anyone can count – that from the outside it was obvious we’d committed to a strategy and executed it. Getting that feedback from two legends was a real kick.

From there to Almagrundet the wind was all over the place; code and A3 at TWA 90/100/110, shifting constantly – so it was a running question of whether to let the pilot steer to compass and re-trim continually, or steer to wind angle so we could rest a little while the boat wandered ten degrees high and low. We tried both and found something that worked.

On corrected time we won this leg by 24 minutes over Tärna and more than an hour over Amazigh, and took the class lead on handicap. I’m super proud of the team for staying 100% focused this late in the race, after the grueling stage up to Visby.

Leg 7: Almagrundet → Finish

Wed 01/07 02:10 → Wed 01/07 05:13 CET. Final stretch into Sandhamn in light southeast, 5 knots (3–7). A short, nervous finish leg.

As everyone who’s sailed Gotland Runt knows, the thing is very often decided between Almagrundet and the finish, and it’s fatally easy to arrive at Alma and think the job’s done.

For us it was a genuine nail-biter.

The wind shifted a lot and, worse, it lightened right off.

We had good boatspeed most of the way, but 300–400 metres from the line – after the whole pack ahead had already finished – the wind basically died.

We were doing about a knot, sitting there with the KSSS photo boat, the clock running, and what had looked like a safe class win a hundred metres earlier suddenly felt thrown away.

But there was just enough breeze to creep across.

We knew Amazigh was about an hour ahead on the water and that we’d taken them on corrected time, and on AIS we could see Tärna five miles back – they had to give us about 20 minutes and wouldn’t make it. So it felt reasonably safe.

But as always, you don’t actually know until the results are up and every boat is in. So we waited.

Results

First in Double Handed (SRS) and first cruiser/racer in SRS.

Huge thanks to KSSS and everyone who organised, and to everyone who followed along. And thanks to those who make it possible: B&G, Happy Yachting, Henri Lloyd, J/Boats, J/Composites, North Sails, Liros and Spinlock.

Our class position on corrected time, mark by mark: 1st at Svenska Högarna, 3rd at Fårö, 2nd at Östergarn, 2nd at Hoburg, 2nd at Visby, 1st at Almagrundet, 1st at the finish. A race with two faces – two faster boats (Amazigh, Boxer) led on the water almost the whole way while Tärna and BLUR traded blows again and again- and it came down to the long, light return, where the light air suited us and we could finally make it stick.

Gap to the class leader – the whole fleet

The story is in the shape. BLUR led out of the opening leg, then paid for the light dawn passage to Fårö and slipped to 17 minutes behind Tärna — the only real dip of the race. From the east coast of Gotland onward the line climbs back toward zero, and at Almagrundet BLUR and Tärna finally swap for good. The two genuinely fast boats, Joyride and Boxer, run away toward the bottom: quick on the water, but never able to save their rating in the light.

Blur vs Tärna – the match within the race

For four marks Tärna had us – never by much, a couple of minutes at Hoburg – but they were in front. We lost them at Gotska Sandön but then reeled them in. Equal at Hoburgen, 32 minutes ahead at Visby, 56 at Almagrundet after the routing paid off, and 33 minutes at the finish.

What we learned – and tips for next time

On the weather models. The regional, higher-resolution models earned their keep. FMI HARMONIE and MET Nordic were consistently the best on the legs that mattered, often 1–3 knots and several degrees closer to reality than the global models. In light air below about 4 knots, resolution is everything. Two caveats we’d write on the bulkhead: no model caught the light hole on the east coast of Gotland — there, local knowledge beat every GRIB – and the models systematically under-read the wind, so in open water it’s worth mentally adding a couple of knots. Run several models in parallel to see the spread, and get comfortable sailing under uncertainty. It’s the messy, shifty, transitional stuff – “this is going to get really tricky up here at Östergarn, good” – where we tend to make our gains.

If I had to put my finger on the three things that made us sail well, it’d be these.

One: we always drive the boat hard. 

Doublehanded you’ve got less muscle aboard and have to do more with fewer people – but a lot of things also get simpler with two. It’s completely clear who’s responsible for sailing the boat, and usually there’s one person on deck sailing it actively with no doubt that that’s their only job. We’ve moved away from rigid two-on/two-off toward something much more dynamic – the way a lot of the French sail. Rather than watching the clock, we talk constantly about how much rest we need and how much is left in the tank. Sometimes it’s I sleep two, Mattias sleeps two; sometimes we both push hard on deck for four hours and only then start trading sleep, whether that’s 2+2 or 1+1 to keep it fair. We have different needs – Mattias often needs a bit more sleep, and I can run a long time on very little- but you have to be careful not to drive yourself into the wall entirely. And we protect time together: breakfast, lunch, dinner where we can, because that’s when the tactical conversations happen.

Two: we’re offensive with routing and shifts. 

We’re always trying to identify the zones where the race will actually be decided, and we want a distinct strategy for them. It isn’t about taking a lot of risk – we’ve got a quick boat and don’t need anything spectacular – it’s about being on the right side when things happen and not getting stuck in a hole. Commit to the analysis and sail it cleanly. The half-committed middle ground is usually the slowest place to be.

Three: sail inventory. 

None of this is new, but anyone who’s built a wardrobe knows it’s a pile of compromises – which jibs, which downwind sails, staysail or not, where each sail’s sweet spot is, and where the crossovers fall. The J/111 had a few sharp peaks where, with the right kite and angle, it would just take off. The J/99 is rounder and duller in the polar; I can rarely bear away ten degrees for a big gain, so we wanted a wardrobe that plays to that. We think we got the overlaps right – at 5 m/s and TWA 80 the jib works, the Code works, and it’s fine to sit with those sails without swapping – which meant we weren’t constantly changing to keep the boat in the groove. Also, we’re able to sail most angles without compromising performance, which makes routing easier. Between the French wardrobe the boat came with and the winter’s work with North Sails, especially on the downwind inventory, we pretty much nailed it in the conditions we had. I’ll write a separate piece on this later.

The last thing worth saying: the reason we sail well here is the fleet.

The Stockholm east-coast doublehanded scene is genuinely active, with a number of boats sailed at a very high level – people who know their boats, keep them tidy, have sailed together for years and done Gotland Runt many times over. Getting to benchmark yourself against them is fantastic.

Beating them is even better.

If you’ve been involved in offshore racing for a while, you’ve probably come across the new way of calculating results: Weather Routing Scoring (WRS). The idea: combine a boat’s theoretical performance (the VPP polars on its certificate) with a weather model for the actual race, then measure how close each boat got to its possible performance under the conditions.

Sounds good in theory. In practice – as we all know – this is not an exact science. The VPP isn’t really your boat’s true performance, it’s an approximation with some pretty large holes in it. And the weather rarely behaves the way the models think it should.

As the method has become more widely used, we’ve started to see some nasty side effects. At the recent ORC DH Worlds in Scheveningen, several results were very surprising. In Norway, sailors in this year’s Færderseilasen want their money back. There’s been talk of a bug for some time, but ORC has not responded – and as with the XR-41 case, it’s once again the tech-savvy designers and navigators doing the heavy lifting to actually figure out what’s going on.

The deeper question isn’t only the bug. It’s about transparency: should sailors be able to understand their relative rating before, during and after the race? And how much should the race committee’s choice of weather model, routing algorithm and scoring method really affect the result? At some point you have to ask whether a less scientifically ambitious rule that sailors actually understand is the better trade-off.

A small but telling data point from home: our last offshore race at Sandhamn Open. Not a single sailor I spoke to understood the results. And if you re-score the same race with different ORC methods, the order changes a lot – see the table below, scored five different ORC ways. Most boats shift one to four places depending on which method you pick. For a fleet of twelve, that’s not a rounding error – that’s the gap between a podium finish and the back of the pack.

To see what this can look like from the inside, here’s what happened to Team Gaia at the DH Worlds – finishing second across the line, scored last in the results. That’s what it looks like from a competing team in the middle of the storm. The frustration is justified . but it doesn’t tell us why the numbers behave the way they do.

For that, Nils Melsom Kristensen has done his homework. He sailed the recent Færderseilasen on the X-41 Saillogic, works as a scientist at MET Norway, and produced the official weather briefing for the event. He has dug into the actual mechanism behind the WRS output – and what he’s found is worth reading carefully.

How can we fix the ORC WRS?

Weather routing scoring could have been one of the best things that has happened to handicap racing in ages, but unfortunately it seems to be failing. Surprise surprise, it’s not primarily due to unreliable weather models, it’s a fundamental flaw in the weather routing module. Here is my humble attempt at explaining the problem in a way that is understandable to most sailors. All the work below is based on the recent Færder race in Norway.

Disclaimer: I was sailing the race onboard the X-41 Saillogic. I also work as a scientist at MET Norway and produced the official weather briefing for the event, but I am not directly connected to any of the weather models used in the WRS. So even if I might have a personal interest in the case, my only agenda is to fix the WRS, which is currently not working as intended.

To explain this, I will use the case of four X-41 sailing in the same class, same course, same start. Here are some facts about the boats and rating. All percentage differences below use Saillogic as reference.

It is expected to have some differences in the rating relatively between boats when moving from APH to WRS, since the polar diagrams are not exactly the same. However, to have One Design boats (like the X-41) with only slightly different sail configurations to change by 8% when moving from one system to another is something that should be grounds for a more thorough examination.

Let’s first look at the measurement certificates (link in table above). The VPP performance number (polars) can be found below.

Then, let us compare these two. See both absolute and relative differences in speed in the tables below. Positive numbers means Saillogic is faster, negative numbers means BarX is faster.

As we can see, Saillogic is generally faster than BarX, which is also expected since the APH of BarX is 0.8% less than Saillogic. The largest relative difference in predicted speed is 8.8%. This is reaching in 24kt TWS. The Færder race saw a maximum wind of about 16kt for a few hours, while the boats were sailing upwind or very tight reaching at TWA 50-90 deg.

According to the WRS routing prediction for Saillogic, the maximum wind used is 10.4kt. For BarX, the maximum wind is 10.1kt.

Then, looking at the relative differences in less than 10kt TWS above, we see the maximum difference is 5.1% in 4kt TWS. 

Again looking at the WRS prediction, we see both boats should spend no more than about 2 hours in wind below 5kt, and when taking into account that the predicted total sailing time for Saillogic is about 16 hours, and BarX about 17.5 hours, this accounts for very small parts of the race, and no difference in performance between the boats for the wind range used in WRS is remotely close to the 8.8% difference in rating.

So, let us continue the search. 

As was said during the official weather briefing, the weather was very uncertain due to the passing of a small local low pressure system that was passing over the race course during the race. In hindsight, the weather development was very close to the latest forecast that was used in the WRS scoring for the race. The low probably passed a bit further south than expected, giving a more stable breeze than expected, but directions were very close to the forecasted weather. It is common knowledge that forecasting weather is not a precise science due to a number of reasons, something every meteorologist is open and honest about. However, the forecast was generally in good agreement with the actual weather for the race. And, the real weather has no impact on the rating we have discussed so far…

There is no perfect forecast, no perfect weather routing, and no perfect rating system, but the WRS should theoretically be one of the better “simple” systems we can come up with, and it is therefore very surprising that the rating behaves so unpredictable.

Let us dig deeper…

If we look at the WRS output for the Færder race, and the four X-41’s, we can view their predicted courses in the map below.

Unfortunately, there is a lot of clutter from the mark names, but trust me when I say that the predicted optimal routes align very well.

So, why would the WRS predict that almost identical boats, sailing the same route, in the same wind perform so differently?

If we zoom in on the predicted routes, we see something strange. This is the crux of the matter. We can clearly see that the wind barbs are placed at different positions along the optimal routes. When using a grid-based routine algorithm, these wind barbs are usually placed at the start and end of the route segments, so we assume the same is the case here. In the example below, I have zoomed in on the part of the course between Moss and almost Færder. Now, take a close look at the “brownish” optimal route, and then the white, light grey and purple. The routes on the left are the ones going south, while the ones on the right are the ones returning north. On the southward routes, there are clearly very few wind barbs on the brown route. In fact, going south in this area, I can only spot two (I tried to mark them with red dots), whereas the purple have at least eight.

Why does this matter, you say? Well it does. The wind at the start and end of the routing segment is the wind used to calculate the time spent for that segment based on the boat’s performance prediction. Either the wind at the start of the segment is used on the entire segment, or the wind is linearly interpolated between the two.

If the wind was stable, and did not change in time or space, then it would not matter how many of these routing points you had, since the sum of the predicted times for each segment would be the same as the value for the very long segment. But when the wind is changing, we get a kind of aliasing that would give a different sum of time for the same route depending on where, and how many routing segments you have. See a simplified example in the appendix below.

This type of behaviour in the routing algorithm is common knowledge among offshore navigators who use grid based routing software. When these long jumps occur, it is common to make small changes in the routing settings to try to avoid them. Why they happen, I don’t really know, but I guess there is a bug somewhere… As far as I know, these jumps do not appear commonly in isochronal based routing algorithms.

So, where do we go from here, how do we fix it? Well, only the provider of the routing can do that, but they should start by ensuring that the routing segments have a more evenly distributed length, and that they are not too long. Additionally, it would be wise of the ORC to admit the problem, and how this may have influenced the results of races that have been scored using WRS.

As I final note, even if I am very certain that this is the problem, I can be wrong, and I am definitely open to other explanations if anyone has one.

Appendix

Comparing the yachts that sailed the longest course, APH on x-axis, WRS on y-axis. Red line is linear regression, while the yellow are +/- 1 standard deviation and the green +/- 2 standard deviations. Yachts that fall below the red line have “better WRS than APH” , while the yachts above the red line “have worse”. Boats in blue generally behave as expected, while the red and orange are some that should be looked into. 

Overall, it is expected that relatively similar boats that are considered “all-round boats”, should have a similar relative relation between them if it is APH or WRS.

Average leg length (of the predicted route) vs absolute deviation from the regression line, minimum leg length vs abs_deviation and maximum leg length vs abs_deviation. See e.g. BarX has the longest leg of all yachts, over 18nm on a 88nm race…

Efter Marstrand Big Boat så var det dags att ta båten till Östersjön för Gotland Runt och RORC Baltic Sea Race. Ett bra sätt att värma upp, och att få segla lite mer tillsammans med hela teamet (de långa racen kör vi doublehanded) var att segla Sandhamn Open som också var SM i ORCi.

Eftersom offshore-racet startade 20:00 så hade vi dagen på oss att kolla så att allt funkade. Efter en kort kryss med J1.5 och en repa tillbaka med Code 0 så kändes allt på plats och vi kunde belöna oss själva med en tidig middag på Seglarhotellet.

Sedan dags för skepparmöte. Efter en vecka med ostadigt väder såg det ut bli fina förutsättningar för ett race på havet. Förutom vi som körde ORCi, fanns det två klasser i SRS; en för full besättning och en för doublehandedseglarna.

Samma startområde som Gotland Runt, söder om Sandön. Vi gjorde en bra start i lovart, men vinden vred med strax efter start och vi hade nog hellre haft vår A3 än Code 0. Det är också svårt att vara en av de långsammaste båterna, då man blir ifrånseglad av allt och alla. Och man vet inte riktigt om det är rätt eller om man skall göra något annorlunda 😀

Fin kryss söderut mot Dämban. Vi visste att det skulle vrida vänster, och ville hålla oss till vänster om fleeten. Här hade det antagligen varit bättre att segla på skiften, då vridet kom senare än vad vi hade gissat. Här tappade vi en del på Pro4U som rundade någon distans före.

Vi hade också svårt att nå våra targets i den korta sjön. Verkade som vi inte var ensamma dock.

Sedan en reachingbog tillbaka till Revenge (typ). Fantastisk nattsegling som alla borde få uppleva någon gång.

Perfekt för vår A3 där vi nu fått massa data att analysera. Men väldigt jämnt mot andra team. Bra fight mot Mumm 36 Shogun och Farr 30 Andiamo. Mycket nyttigt att försöka hänga med snabbare båtar.

Sedan ytterligare en bra kryss mot SO och Väderbojen. Här seglade vi mycket bra och halverade avståndet till Pro4U.

Soluppgång och lång läns norrut mot Svenska Högarna. Här mötte vi Pogo 36 Boxer som till slut blev 2:a i doublehandedklassen.

Kul också att se flera J/111 på banan. En sån skulle man ha 🤣

Med lite jobb med Excel och andra båtars mätbrev kändes som vi hade bra koll och jag gissade att vi var 2:a i vår klass.

Lång bog med TWA 75-90 där vi fick utväxling på vår Code. När det var brant så seglade vi jämt med Pro4U som körde jibtop och stagsegel, men när det gick över TWA 85 så var vi snabbare.

Avslutningsvis en kort läns in till mållinjen vid Skanskobb. Vi kände oss nöjda med vår insats och ytterligare ett bevis på att Pro4U inte gör särskilt många misstag.

Resultatrapporteringen dröjde eftersom KSSS också hade strul med TracTrac. 18:30, dvs nästan 5 timmar efter att sista båt gått i mål kom detta screenshot i WhatsApp-gruppen. Jag vet inte hur resultathantering kan vara ett problem 2026?

Det var samma issues på Marstrand Big Boat. Och på Færdern i år. Att seglarna inte har en aning om hur det går, vare sig på havet eller efter målgång kan inte vara så det är tänkt? Kommer nog ett separat inlägg om detta.

Så här blev det till slut:

Eftersom vi skall segla Gotland Runt på SRS, och inte alls är optimerade för ORCi, så räknade jag om alla båtars tider enligt SRS för att se hur vi presterat. Ganska bra visade det sig 🤣

Belöning!

Under söndagen planerades 3-4 banseglingar utanför Sandhamn. Prognosen var utmanande för tävlingsledningen då vindar skulle ticka från NV till S i samband med att en liten front passerade. Och massor av regn. Men det blev fyra riktigt bra race, där egentligen bara det sista blev riktigt skevt.

Framförallt starterna var svåra, med kort linje och massor av snabba båtar. Men vi gjorde det bästa av situationen och lyckades ofta ta oss ut rimligt ok i lovart.

Rent racingmässigt var det nästan en kopia av Marstrand Big Boat, väldigt jämnt på havet med Pro4U och massor av kul dueller. Men på korrigerad tid rår vi inte på dem. I alla fall inte under ORCi.

Men det är sjukt lärorikt att få sparra mot världens bästa båt!

Profilen SWE 8971 is the world’s first extruded yacht. SAPA, Scandinavian Aluminum Profiles AB produced it in 1981. The initiator of Profilen, creative impact photographer and sailor Lennart Hyse, initiated the idea, collected a crew, took the role as the project manager, documented the story and created a classic slideshow of the unique story. Efter förra årets övertygande serie 1-1-1-1-1 så var nog andras förväntningar ganska höga. Men vi visste också att nivån på fältet var ganska mycket högre i år. En annan faktor var att vi skulle segla ORCi, något som vår båt inte alls är optimerad för.

Ready to race.

Fredagen inleddes med North Sails Clinic. Mycket nyttigt att få se bilder på sina segel utifrån, och kunna ha en diskussion om hur stor och fock samverkar på ett bra sätt. Vi var ganska rätt ute med de referenser vi hade förra året, och som vi nu har justerat för vår nya garderob.

Nu fick vi också känna på First 36.7 Pro4U. De är ju regerande världsmästare i ORCi, kan sin båt utan och innan och har varit i en egen klass här hemma under många år. De är benchmarket som vi andra kan mäta oss mot. Och jag hade inga illusioner om att vi skulle rå på dem i deras paradgren.

På träningen kändes det som vi hade lite edge på kryss, men hade svårt att hänga med dem utför.

Kul att se Kwanza tillbaka. Nu i en FarEast 28R på hemmaplan (när man inte seglar ClubSwan 43 i Medelhavet).

Tätt även i träningsracen.

Skepparmöte och en prognos som kunde innehålla mycket vind.

Våra prognoser pekade på en sydvästlig gradient byggande till 14–17 kt över lunch, följt av en kallfrontpassage runt 15:30 med en dramatisk vridning från SSW till WSW och tryckfall. Sju av åtta vädermodeller var överens om mönstret.

Vinden byggde precis enligt prognos och toppade strax efter kl 12. Men fronten kom aldrig – den passerade någon gång under kvällen/natten som en utdragen process istället för det dramatiska skiftet vi var preppade för. Pre-frontal vridning började anas mot slutet av sista racet, men det blev aldrig något stort vrid.

Fantastiska förhållanden där vi seglade bra. När vi inte ställde till det för oss själva. Jag hade väldiga problem i starterna då det var en relativt kort linje och massor av stora båtar. Man undrar lite vad vitsen är att dela in i klasser om alla ändå skall starta samtidigt? Nu kunde ingen båt i Klass C starta vettigt. Visst, det är samma för alla, men jag hade tyckt det var tråkigt att transportera hit från Tyskland för att inte få en egen start…

En annan sak som var klurigt var att man körde kryss-gate i stället för ett märke med spread. Vi upplevde att detta gav upphov till fler farliga situationer där framförallt de snabbare båtarna ofta rundade det fördelaktiga högra märket och gippsatte vilket gjorde att det blev svårhanterliga situationer ett par gånger.

Dagens tema. Vi var före Pro4U i ett race, och tätt efter i de flesta. Men vi mäter högre än vad de gör, så de slog oss på korrigerat i alla race.

Vår serie efter första dagen: 2-2-3-2.

Klassisk regattamiddag på Såsen. Skönt att ingen blivit äldre sedan vi var här förra gången.

Äntligen en bra start… Då vart det så klart allmän omstart.

Mer på samma tema. Race 5 tyckte vi att vi seglade närmast perfekt och var var 1:24 före Patrik Forsgren i mål. Men ändå förlorade vi det racet med 17 sekunder.

Sista racet tappade vi skärpan lite och hade problem med farten ett par tillfällen. Dagens resultat: 2-5.

Totalt en andraplats efter världens bästa Class C-båt. Det måste vi vara nöjda med. Vi skulle säkert kunna optimera båten bättre om vi skulle segla mer ORCi. Nu är ju planen att segla doublehanded i IRC, så vi låter nog bli det.

Kunde inte låta bli att räkna om resultaten i SRS. Då hade vi slagit dem 🤣

Ansökan att representera Sverige vid OFFSHORE DOUBLE HANDED WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 2026 i Marseilles

Svenska Havskappseglinsförbundet öppnar ansökan om deltagande för att representera Sverige vid Offshore Double Handed World Championship 2026.

Mästerskapet går 2026 i Marseilles, Frankrike den 23 september till 2 oktober med av Svenska Havskappseglingsförbundet nominerat(de?) lag. Lagen ska bestå av en kvinna och en man. Båda med erfarenhet från liknande segling och skall som individ och lag uppfylla övriga ställda krav.

Arrangör är Union Nautique Marseillaise (UNM) tillsammans med Cap Regatta som förser evenemanget med båtar av typen C30 (Sun Fast 30 One Design) under World Sailings regi.

Nu finns den formella inbjudan ute och vi har i dagsläget en troika med intresserade  team från Sverige till detta Världsmästerskap. SHF har fått i uppgift från SSF att nominera och anmäla upp till 2 Svenska lag!

Jag uppmuntrar alla initiativ som får ut fler människor på havet, och jag gillar folk som tar action istället för att bara prata. Madeleine Lithvall gör båda delarna med Gybe Set.

Hon köpte en Diva 399 förra sommaren — Est! Est!! Est!!! — och har lagt vintern på att uppgradera båten till en bra plattform för kölbåtskappsegling. Egen ingång till sporten var familjesegling och sjöscouter, inte den klassiska jollevägen, plus några år som coach och skeppare. Hon vet vad som saknas i början av en kappseglingsresa eftersom hon stått där själv. På meritlistan finns bland annat sju Gotland Runt, brons i Baltic Sea Race double-handed, pallplatser i X-41 och J/111 och match racing på WMRT.

Formatet är en crash course på tre kvällar, team om åtta personer ombord, hands-on. Det avgörande är att alla får testa allt: styra, trimma, fördäck, taktik, navigation.

För 2026 körs kurserna i intro- och fortsättningsnivå, plus två tävlingar i programmet: Lidingö Runt och Ornö Runt som clinics. Det finns platser kvar till Ornö Runt. Madeleine driver dessutom Gybe Set, som lyfter tjejer i sporten globalt.

Me during the Bermuda 1-2, just south of Nantucket. Tricky conditions for any autopilot.

After more than 7 seasons with the H5000 across two boats, countless hours on Sailing Anarchy threads, B&G’s own advanced training materials, and conversations with people who set these systems up for a living, I’ve collected a set of insights that would have saved me a lot of time. Many aren’t obvious from the manual. A few I had to learn the hard way.

Written from the perspective of doublehanded racing on a 33-36 ft performance yacht (J/111, now J/99), but the principles apply to any H5000 installation where the autopilot matters.

Before anything else: update your software. Running the latest H5000 Pilot Computer software (currently version 2.0.0.2) is essential for getting the best performance out of the system. Many of the issues people still describe online were addressed in this release. Download it here, and read point 3 below carefully – there’s one setting you need to disable after the update or you won’t see the improvement.

1. There are actually two different pilots inside your H5000

This is the single most important thing to understand, and it isn’t always obvious from the documentation.

Perf 1 is essentially the same algorithm as B&G’s standard cruising pilot, the NAC-2. No sailing-specific intelligence. It behaves like a classical PID controller, which means three things happen at once: Rudder Gain (proportional) sets how much rudder per degree of heading error. Big error, big correction. Counter Rudder (derivative) watches how fast the error is changing and brakes the turn before you overshoot. Think of it as anticipation. AutoTrim (integral) slowly learns a steady-state rudder offset to compensate for persistent weather helm. Cruising Speed scales all of this by boat speed (see point 4). That’s the whole algorithm. And that’s what AutoTune calibrates.

Perf 2-5 gradually blend in something different: the “Performance Sail” algorithm, which uses an internal mathematical boat model with fixed gain tables you can’t see or adjust. The blend isn’t linear either. Experienced users describe it as more of an exponential curve than a volume dial: the step from Perf 2 to 3 is small, but from 4 to 5 it’s large.

Why this matters: AutoTune mainly calibrates the Perf 1 algorithm. If you run Perf 3 (which handles most conditions on a boat our size), your Rudder Gain setting has diminishing effect. If the pilot steers poorly at Perf 3 and you start tweaking Rudder Gain, you’re adjusting a parameter the system is mostly ignoring. The problem is almost certainly somewhere else.

On top of the steering algorithms sit the Expert Systems, and understanding what they do is just as important. Gust Response and TWS Response don’t change how the rudder is controlled. They change the target TWA that the pilot is aiming at. When a gust hits, Gust Response shifts the target a few degrees lower (bear-away). When the gust passes, it slowly returns. TWS Response does the same thing but for sustained wind increases, and it stays low as long as the wind stays up.

The exception is Heel Compensation, which acts directly on the rudder as a fast-learning weather helm compensator. It tracks average heel and reacts to rapid increases. Think of it as a much faster version of AutoTrim that responds within a gust cycle rather than over 60 seconds.

For troubleshooting: if the boat bears away too much in gusts, look at Gust Response gain before Rudder Gain. If the boat rounds up in gusts, look at Heel Compensation before the Perf level. Wrong layer, wrong fix.

This is also the principle behind products like Pixel Sur Mer’s Exocet system, which takes external target management much further. Their overlays can steer to heel angle, target speed, or polar-optimised wind angles, using data the H5000’s internal systems don’t have access to. Pixel Sur Mer have been B&G’s development partner for many years and the collaboration has improved the H5000’s own algorithms. If you’re racing at a level where the built-in Expert Systems aren’t enough, their Exocet Essential is worth looking at.

2. Don’t turn everything on

It’s tempting to enable every feature; Gust Response, TWS Response, Heel Compensation, Auto Response, Recovery Mode, because they all sound useful. Don’t.

Start with the basics: Perf 3, Wind Mode Auto, everything else off. Sail the boat. Understand how it steers with just the core algorithm. Is it holding course? Tracking through tacks? Handling waves?

Then add features one at a time. Enable TWS Response first (generally more useful than Gust Response for sustained conditions). See if it helps. Then try Heel Compensation. Then Gust Response. Each time you add a feature, sail enough to understand what it does to your boat in your conditions.

The reason this matters: the Expert Systems interact. Gust Response and TWS Response can fight each other if their gains overlap. Heel Compensation at too high a gain looks exactly like oscillation from too much Rudder Gain. If you turn everything on at once and something goes wrong, you have no idea which feature is causing the problem.

B&G’s own Level 300+ training material says the same thing: only activate advanced features one at a time.

3. Turn some things off

Two settings should be off by default for racing, and one commissioning step is easy to overlook.

Turn off Adapt — especially after the 2.0.0.2 software update. This is the single most important setting change you can make, and the one most people miss. Adapt is a background learning function that continuously refines the pilot’s understanding of how your rudder translates to turn rate. The 2.0.0.2 release came with a Technical Bulletin specifically calling out that Adapt should be disabled after the update, but in practice most owners haven’t picked up on it, and they don’t see the performance improvement the new software is supposed to deliver. If you’ve updated and feel like nothing changed, this is almost certainly why. Go into the Pilot menu and turn Adapt off. Re-run AutoTune any time your boat’s characteristics change significantly (different keel position, rig tune, bottom state).

Turn off leeway-corrected wind for the pilot. The H5000 can include leeway in its TWA calculation, which is great for navigation displays and tactical decisions. But for the pilot it can create a feedback loop: leeway changes with heel, heel changes with gusts, so if the pilot steers to a leeway-corrected TWA, every gust shifts the target angle. The pilot chases this moving target, producing constant rudder activity and unstable steering. Keep leeway correction on for your displays and Expedition, but verify it’s off for the pilot input via the H5000 web interface.

Save Rudder Drive settings before commissioning. This step is documented in B&G’s Level 300+ training material but easy to miss. Before starting Dockside Commissioning or the Rudder Test, you have to visit the Rudder Drive settings page and press Save, even if all settings are already correct. Otherwise your settings aren’t stored, and downstream steps (Rudder Test, AutoTune) may not behave as expected. I suspect this explains some of the “I can’t get my pilot to work” reports on forums where people have done everything right but the system refuses to cooperate.

4. Cruising Speed is not what it sounds like

The name is misleading. Cruising Speed is the reference point around which the PID controller scales its response. Below this speed, the pilot applies more rudder (the boat is sluggish, needs more authority). Above it, less rudder (the boat is responsive, needs less). It functions as a gain reference more than a speed setting.

B&G’s guidelines: 5-6 kn for 10m, 7 kn for 12m, 10 kn for 20m. In practice, many racing setups run higher; a SunFast 3300 (10m) uses 8-12 kn. Our J/111 ran 6-10 kn. Experiment, but know what you’re actually changing. It also serves as the failsafe speed if both BSP and SOG fail, so don’t set it to something absurd.

5. The pilot watches you steer for 30 seconds before it takes over

When you press AUTO, the pilot doesn’t start from zero. It samples your average rudder angle over the preceding 30 seconds or so and uses that as its starting weather helm offset. That becomes the initial value for AutoTrim.

Practical consequence: steer straight and steady for at least 30 seconds before engaging. If you hand over during a luff, a course change, or while fighting a wave, the pilot starts with a wrong baseline. It will steer poorly for up to 60 seconds while AutoTrim re-learns the correct offset. On a doublehanded boat where you engage the pilot to go do something on the foredeck, those 60 seconds matter.

6. AWA isn’t always best upwind

The conventional wisdom (and B&G’s default Auto mode) is AWA upwind, TWA downwind, switching at 70° TWA. Works well in moderate conditions. But there are two situations where TWA can be better upwind.

Light air (under 8-10 kts): AWA fluctuates constantly with every puff and lull. The pilot chases these fluctuations, producing constant rudder activity that costs speed. TWA is more stable, giving smoother steering. Some experienced pilots use TWA upwind most of the time for this reason.

Heavy air (18+ kts, TWA 55-62°): when sailing wider angles for safety and speed, TWA provides more stable target tracking and prevents the pilot from pinching in lulls.

Our default remains Auto mode, which works well for the J/99 in 10-18 kts. But it’s worth experimenting at the extremes.

7. Check your hard-over time

One setting that doesn’t get much attention: how long it takes the rudder to swing from full port to full starboard. B&G’s spec is 12-15 seconds for 30-90 foot yachts, never above 25 seconds. Performance boats are usually toward the lower end.

Several owners on Sailing Anarchy have reported that their pilot steered noticeably better after slowing the hard-over time to around 12 seconds, especially when it had been set faster. The mechanism isn’t obvious; the drive speed is something the PID values are implicitly calibrated against, so changing one without retuning the other might be part of it. Either way, worth knowing your number.

To check yours, put the pilot in NFU (Non Follow Up) mode, drive the rudder fully one way, then start a stopwatch as you drive it the other way. If you change the setting, re-run AutoTune afterwards.

8. Troubleshoot in layers, not parameters

Think of the pilot as a stack. Hardware at the bottom, target intelligence at the top:

• Layer 5: Expert Systems (Gust/TWS Response, Heel Compensation)
• Layer 4: Steering algorithm (PID at Perf 1, PS algorithm at Perf 2-5)
• Layer 3: Mode and target (compass, AWA, TWA)
• Layer 2: Sensors (BSP, heading, wind)
• Layer 1: Drive (motor, ram, rudder feedback)

When the pilot misbehaves, resist the urge to jump straight to Rudder Gain. Work from the inputs upward instead.

Start with the sensors. Is BSP correct? Compare to SOG in zero current. Is heading calibrated? Is wind data trustworthy? A fouled paddlewheel produces the same symptoms as bad PID tuning.

If sensors check out, look at mode and target. Are you in the right mode? Is TWA calibrated for the current conditions?

Then look at the Expert Systems. Are Gust Response and TWS Response interacting badly? Is Heel Compensation gain too high? That looks exactly like oscillation.

Only then consider the steering algorithm itself: Rudder Gain and Counter Rudder. And only if you’re running Perf 1-2. At Perf 3+, these have limited effect.

Finally, check the drive. Is Motor Output sufficient? Is the ram hitting its end stops? Is battery voltage holding up under load?

The most common mistake I’ve made is adjusting the steering algorithm when the real problem was a sensor. Fix the inputs first.

Sailing Anarchy startades av Scot Tempesta runt 2000 som en reaktion på den traditionella seglingspressen. Jag gick själv med tidigt 2005, när forumet var som ett stökigt klubbhus för kappseglare: respektlöst, initierat och ofta gränslöst.

Eftar att ha sålt (?) SA så är Scot på gång igen. Nu på Rule 69, som vi minns som Magnus Wheatleys kontroversiella blogg. Vi skrev om den när den lades ner 2008. Detta känns som en ganska naturlig återkomst: mindre PR-filter, mer åsikter, mer nerv och förhoppningsvis inte bara provokation.

Skall också bli intressant att se hur detta står sig i ett modernt medialandskap?

Okay, here we go! This is the first and somewhat wordy, Rule 69 podcast, an introduction to what I have in mind for Rule 69 going forward. I want this new platform to by dynamic, interesting and entertaining. I know there are a lot of options to occupy your eyeballs, and I know that if we aren’t entertaining at the very least, people won’t care. We have not had a ton of time to get the site where it is ultimately going to be, but we are happy with what we have so far, and hope that you enjoy it!

As the founder of the other place all those years ago, I learned one hell of a lot, both what to do and what not to do (I’m still getting the hang of what not to do – haha). We are going to have more content from a variety of excellent writers, and given that we are brand new, I really want to ask our small (so far)community to contribute content they they like. Stories, anecdotes, pics, videos, jokes, insults, lengthy diatribes and ball busting are all welcome. Hell, we’ll take poetry. Dirty of course – haha.

Inför Paris 2024 säkrade Emil Bengtson en svensk nationsplats i ILCA 7. Men han kom ändå inte med till OS.

Inför SOK:s årsmöte har Friidrottsförbundet utmanat själva modellen för svenska OS-uttagningar. Och det här är inte bara en friidrottsfråga. För seglingen är det högst konkret: ska en nationsplats räcka, eller ska SOK fortfarande kunna säga nej?

Idag kom årsmöteshandlingarna inför SOK:s årsmöte. Där finns Friidrottsförbundets motion om att låta internationella kriterier och kvalgränser styra vem som får åka. SOK har också lämnat ett förslag till beslut (avslag).

Problemet för kritikerna är inte att SOK har kriterier, utan att kriterierna i praktiken bygger på prognoser, bedömningar och egna nationella filter ovanpå de internationella kvalsystemen.

Jag fattar så klart argumentet att SOK vill bygga en konkurrenskraftig trupp. Men jag har svårt att förstå logiken när Sverige först kvalar en plats – och sedan väljer att inte använda den.

I grunden handlar det här väl mer om maktfördelningen inom svensk idrott än om de som tävlar: ska tolkningsföreträdet ligga hos internationella förbund, de nationella specialförbunden eller SOK?

Och vårt förbund skall nu rösta i frågan.

Ska SSF rösta för en modell där internationell kvalificering normalt ska räcka — eller för att SOK även fortsättningsvis ska kunna säga nej till en redan kvalificerad svensk plats?

Vem ska få representera Sverige på OS?

Inför OS i Paris 2024 valde Sveriges olympiska kommitté (SOK) att inte ta ut en svensk seglare i ILCA 7, trots att Sverige hade kvalificerat en nationsplats i klassen. Även i flera andra idrotter fick aktiva stå över deltagande trots att det fanns möjlighet att skicka dem till spelen. Samma fråga har också aktualiserats i andra sammanhang, bland annat inför vinter-OS.

Det här har lett till en bredare diskussion om hur svenska idrottare ska tas ut till olympiska spel. Svenska Friidrottsförbundet har lämnat in en motion till SOK, och inom seglingen finns nu ett behov av att samla in medlemmarnas synpunkter. Syftet är att ge Svenska Seglarförbundet (SSF) ett tydligt underlag inför SOK:s årsmöte den 28 april 2026, där SSF har en av 32 röster.

Sveriges modell skiljer sig från många andra länders

I många andra länder innebär en säkrad nationsplats att landet också deltar i grenen. I Sverige är en nationsplats inte automatiskt likställd med att en aktiv får åka till OS. Uttagningen bygger i stället på en bedömning enligt SOK:s riktlinjer.

I riktlinjerna används återkommande formuleringen att den aktive ska bedömas ha möjlighet att nå en viss prestationsnivå. Det betyder att uttagningen inte enbart grundas på redan uppnådda resultat, utan också på en prognos över hur den aktive förväntas prestera under spelen.

Så fungerar kriterierna i dag

SOK:s riktlinjer utgår i huvudsak från följande principer:

Grundkriteriet

Den aktive ska bedömas kunna konkurrera om minst en tolfteplats på OS.

Framtidskriteriet

En aktiv som ännu inte bedöms nå topp 12 kan ändå tas ut, om personen anses ha stor potential inför kommande olympiska spel.

Undantag

Undantag kan göras om den aktives nivå sammantaget anses motsvara grundkriteriet.

Det som nu diskuteras

Den centrala frågan i debatten är vilken vikt som ska läggas vid faktiskt uppnådda resultat jämfört med framtida bedömningar. Kritiker menar att dagens modell ger SOK ett stort tolkningsutrymme, eftersom uttagningen i hög grad bygger på prognoser snarare än enbart på kvalificering och resultat.

I den analys som Friidrottsförbundet gjorde efter OS i Paris lyftes exempel där aktiva, som inte togs ut med hänvisning till att de inte bedömdes nå topp 12, senare visade sig ha resultatnivåer som hade räckt till just detta. Det har förstärkt frågan om hur rättvis och träffsäker den nuvarande modellen är.

För seglingen väcker detta samma principiella fråga: om Sverige har kvalificerat en plats, vilken betydelse ska det då ha i själva uttagningen — och vem ska avgöra när en aktiv har gjort tillräckligt för att få chansen?

Slören är ju kända för att ha Sveriges bästa måndagsseglingar?

Jag var inbjuden för att prata på deras årsmöte. Temat var “Hur man kan utvecklas som kappseglare?” och jag hade lovat “praktiska tips, vanliga misstag och metoder som faktiskt funkar”.

Många är ju riktigt duktiga seglare, och alla har ju koll på teorierna, så jag ville hitta en lite annan vinkel.

Jag fokuserade i stället på de tre vanligaste misstagen jag ser när jag kommer ombord på andra båtar. Och ibland dyker de upp hos oss också. Och vad man bör prioritera om man vill bli lite bättre efter årets säsong.

Vi har alla varit där. Båten känns okej, trimmet ser ut ungefär som i trimguiden och besättningen jobbar på. Ändå glider den där konkurrenten förbi med några grader bättre höjd eller en tiondels knop mer fart… Oftast skyller vi på materialet – nya segel, kolfiber eller dyrare block – men efter 10 år som “nybörjare” i J/111:an och många distans internationellt, har jag insett att de största vinsterna nästan alltid ligger i hur man gör saker.

Jag fick börja med en brasklapp. Vi är ju kända för att vara ganska datadrivna i vår segling (precis som de flesta riktigt bra seglare). Segling är ju trots allt en av världens mest tekniska sporter. Men det är inte själva instrumenten som är det viktigaste 😮 utan att jobba metodiskt, gå från tro till vetande, och skapa förutsättningar för lärande och förbättring.

1. Bristande prioritering: fokus på fel saker

Det här är kanske den viktigaste nyckeln till framgång: att fokusera på det som gör skillnad på riktigt. Att gå från “huvudet i båten” (instrument, trim, målfart) till “huvudet utanför båten” (taktik, vind, konkurrenter). Att gå från saker som gör liten skillnad till saker som gör stor skillnad. Att veta vad som är viktigt i varje läge.

Misstaget: man fokuserar på fel saker. Man pillar med skotpunkter precis innan start, man fastnar man i taktik precis när man behöver 100% fokus på båtfart, eller så sitter hela besättningen och debatterar ström samtidigt som båtarna i lovart plötsligt får en annan vind.

Lösningen: lär dig ställa om. Olika saker är viktiga vid olika tidpunkter:

• Innan vi lämnar bryggan: vad är målet med dagen? Vad vill vi uppnå? Saker att fokusera på? Lära oss?
• Innan start: vart vill vi på första benet? Vad har vi för hypoteser om väder? Var vill vi vara på linjen?
• I starten: fokus på tid, position och att komma upp i fart snabbt. Och att inte ställa till det.
• Direkt efter start: 100 % fokus på fart eller Target Boat Speed (TBS). Hitta fri vind, rätt “mode” och börja exekvera på vår strategi. Hålla koll på vad som händer med vinden.
• Sedan: tillbaka till den stora bilden… Och så vidare.

Nyckeln är att veta när fokus skiftar.

Som jag skrev i mina 7 steg för att få upp farten, så är just transaktioner en av de svåraste, men också viktigaste, sakerna att bemästra.

2. Passivt trim: “Standard” är sällan snabbast

Många seglare hittar ett trim som “känns okej” och stannar där hela racet. Eller hela säsongen. Man seglar på de referensmärken man fick av segelmakaren och hoppas att de ska täcka alla förhållanden från 4 till 24 knop.

Misstaget: Man blir passiv. Man skotar lite för hårt i lättvind (för att man vill peka högt), seglar med lite för lite twist i byig sjö eller planar inte hem riktigt ordentligt när vinden ökar. Att segla 0,2 knop långsammare än båtens potential känns ganska ok. Men det är förödande om jag gör det under ett helt race.

Lösningen: Våga testa extremer och ha koll på farten

• Rodertrycket är ofta facit: Om du har för mycket tryck i rodret på kryssen, beror det antagligen på gel trim. Planare segel, mer twist, eller något annat? Hitta farten först, hämta hem höjden sen. Målet är att ha lagom tryck. Typiskt kanske 4 grader.
• Skilj på känsla och faktiskt fart: väldigt ofta kan det kännas dött men loggen visar att man går riktigt fort. Och tvärtom; det känns kanon, men vi gick fortare förut. Framförallt på modernare båtar så behöver jag lära mig detta.
• Aktivt trim: skot skall inte sitta fast en hel bog, besättningen är lätt att flytta och trimlinor åstadkommer mer än du tror. På Blur pratar vi mycket om att trimma efter vågor och puffar. Varje förändring i tryck kräver en förändring i trim.
• Iterera: ha en hypotes, testa, lär er någonting. “Det känns tungt i rodret” – “skall vi testa att twista lite mer?” – “flyttade ut en markering på spridaren” – “hänger med med storen” – “blev det bättre?” – “farten ökande med 0.1-0.2” – “skall vi testa lite till”. Och uttala den lärdom man kan ta med sig till nästa gång.

3. Brus istället för kommunikation

Segling är en av de mest kommunikationsintensiva sporterna som finns.

Ändå är det ofta här det fallerar under press.

Misstaget: Det pratas för mycket, men om fel saker. Onödigt snack om gamla märkesrundningar eller vad som händer på andra båtar. Detta tränger undan det som är vitalt just nu. Information om vindpustar når inte trimmersen, och rorsman får inte veta att man närmar sig layline förrän det är för sent.

Lösningen: strukturerade kommunikationsloopar om fart, taktik och båthantering. Som vi diskuterade i artikeln om kommunikation ombord på Blur, handlar det om att filtrera informationen:

• Rollspecifik info: prata aktivt och specifikt om det som påverkar fart (eller taktik/båthanteriung).
• Loopar: stäng kommunikationsloopen. När taktiker säger “vi slår på nästa vrid”, ska rorsman bekräfta. Men tveka inte heller att hålla dem igång om ni är osäkra. Iterera ett varv extra för att få med fler perspektiv och öka förståelsen ombord.
• Debrief direkt: Kör en “15-sekunders analys” efter större manövrar. Vad gick bra (WWW – What Worked Well) och vad gör vi annorlunda nästa gång? Vänta inte till bryggan; då har detaljerna glömts bort. Funkar extremt bra på slag eller gippar som man lätt kan göra 1% bättre varje gång.

Sammanfattning: Vad gör du nästa gång?

Att bli en bättre kappseglare handlar sällan om stora revolutioner. Det handlar om att metodiskt beta av dessa misstag.

Min sammanfattning från Slörens årsmöte blev kort och ganska kostnadseffektiv:

• Börja med att rengöra botten. Bästa båtmecket.
• Innan ni lämnar bryggan, prata ihop er om vad ni vill bli bättre på eller lära er mer av för att alla skall vara happy – och sätt tydliga roller för vem som tittar vad under racet.
• Våga trimma aktivt även när det känns bekvämt.
• Efter målgång. Kölr en ordentlig debrief och sammanfatta vad ni lärt er: vad funkade riktigt bra och vad går att göra bättre nästa måndag.

Målet är enkelt: att gå från att tro att man seglar bra till att veta varför man vinner.

Det är en fråga jag ofta får.

Nu senast på SailExpo, där Eric Segerlind frågade igen.

För alla er som har seglat racet en eller ett par gånger är svaret nästan självklar. Men samtidigt svårt att sätta ord på för den som står på land.

Varje år, när man sitter där i Smögen med ett dygns segling i kroppen, mörbultad efter en lång kryss ut från Uddevalla eller en nattlig fight på Kosterfjorden, så lovar man sig själv att det räcker nu.

Ändå är man där på startlinjen igen nästa år.

Så, varför gör vi det?

100% segling + 100% Bohuslän

Receptet är egentligen enkelt (och oslagbart): man mixar världens finaste skärgård, Bohuslän, en rejäl utmaning och massor av fin segling. Att komma in i Fjällbacka när solen går upp eller finlira genom trånga sund är en upplevelse som toppar de flesta internationella race jag kört. Det är en mix av havssegling och skärgård som man inte hittar någon annanstans. CNN Travel rankar vår skärgård som en av världens vackraste,

CNN listar Bohuslän på sin list över världens finaste vildmarker, och det är lätt att förstå varför när man tittar upp från sjökortet.

“If you’ve ever fantasized about gliding silently through the water on a kayak, camping on deserted beaches, enjoying the midnight sun, spotting seals and soaking up the spirit of the sea, you’ll find no shortage of experiences here. This sublime stretch of coastline extends to the border with Norway and is dotted with an archipelago of some 8,000 islands and islets.”.

En lagom utmaning för många seglare

Bohusracet handlar för de flesta inte om att vara först till Smögen. Det är ett race som kräver allt: koll på navigation och ström vid Brattön, taktiska beslut kring var man skall gå mellan Hätteberget och Smögen och förmågan att hantera båten shorthanded när det blåser lite mer än man tänkt sig på Marstrandsfjorden.

Det är här man verkligen lär sig sin båt. Efter över 30.000 nm med J/111 kan jag konstatera att race som det här gör oss till bättre seglare även i andra sammanhang. Man tvingas vara proaktiv, hantera trötthet och fatta beslut när hjärnan funkar som sämst.

Kontrasterna

Ena stunden parkerar man vid Dyrön och glider baklänges medan man febrilt letar efter kårar på vattnet. Nästa stund planar man fram i 15 knop med allt vad båten håller för. Det är den där blandningen av total frustration och ren eufori som är beroendeframkallande. Och för allt slit får man en tallrik fisksoppa. Och på något sätt är det värt det.

Gemenskapen och stämningen

Det finns en speciell stämning kring Bohusracet. Från ”trash talk” på nätet innan start till respekten mellan konkurrenterna på banan. Trots att vi tävlar finns det en grundmurad hjälpsamhet. Vi är alla där av samma anledning: för att utmana oss själva och för att vi älskar den här typen av segling.

Man behöver inte ha den en optimerad SRS-racer för att vara med. Eller ens ha kappseglat på två tidigare. Det viktiga är att man lär sig sin båt och vågar utmana sina egna gränser. Ni som inte har gjort det – sätt upp det på er bucket list. Det är jobbigt, det är blött och man blir galet trött. Men det är kanske det race som bäst nyttjar Bohuslän som kappseglingsbana.

• Bohusracet 2017 – blåsig start, men fint race. Klasseger.
• Bohusracet 2014 – bra segling och 2:a totalt. Igen. 182 anmälda.
• Bohusracet 2013 – en av de mest intensiva upplagorna med 100% racing från start till mål.
• Bohusracet 2011 – reflektioner från ett år där små marginaler avgjorde.
• Bohusracet 2010 – 2 minuter efter totalsegrarna. Extra nogrann Debrief.
• Bohusracet 2009 – jobbigt race. Men ett av de roligaste.
• Bohusracet 2008 – första gången vi körde, då med J/109. 12 båtar på linjen.

Det är den tiden på året när SRS presenterar sina nyheter. Inga stora saker…

Frågan är om det har hänt något bakom kulisserna?

Följande ändringar gäller i SRS 2026

1. Definitionen av försegel som halsas akter om förtriangelbasens förliga mätpunkt (stagsegel) ändras för att SRS reglerna inte skall vara i konflikt med reglerna för ORC och IRC. Detta innebär en ändring av KSR54 i det att alla segel angivna för inre halsning (stagsegel) får halsas på valfri plats inom förtriangeln. Användning av stagsegel (alla segel halsade akter om förtriangelbasens främre punkt som inte är HWJ eller stormfock) kommer att påverka respittalet med ca +0.002.
2. Klassreglerna förtydligas om att antalet trysails, storm och hårdvindsfockar man får ha ombord utan att räknas i antalet segel begränsas till en av varje. En stormfock får inte användas samtidigt som något annat försegel eller flygande försegel
3. SRS-klassregeln ändras för att förtydliga att en mätbrevsbåts SRS-mätbrev får ändra SRS C.1.1.a (mantåg), KSR 51 (Flyttbar ballast), 52 (Handkraft) och 55 (Sätta och skota segel).
4. Effekten av antalet försegel+flygande segel justeras något. Den ungefärliga effekten på respittalet blir enligt tabellen nedan.

5. Effekten av att ha både spinnaker och gennaker justeras något. Effekten blir främst att båtar som har stor gennaker i kombination med en relativt liten symmetrisk spinnaker får något högre respittal

Jag måste erkänna att jag inte hade jättehöga förväntningar på SailExpo som ersättare för den nedlagda båtmässan.

Hur många skulle egentligen orka ta sig till Jacy’z en helg i februari, framför allt när göteborgsvädret var slaskigare än någonsin?

Men jag tyckte att man hade fått med sig det som jag gillade med mässan, och nu gjort det ännu bättre.

Det har ju länge pratat om att mässan borde vara mer av en mötesplats. Genom åren så gjorde man ett antal försök med “seglarbar” och olika typer av scenprogram”, men man föll alltid tillbaka på det klassiska mässformatet. Här tycker jag att man hade fångat precis det som jag tror många har efterfrågat:

• Intim miljö där man kan träffa och prata med andra seglare.
• Lagom stora utställningsytor där fokus låg på bra samtal.
• Ett bra föreläsningsprogram där många sessioner blev överfulla.
• En bra helhet där det finns förutsättningar att göra ännu mer.

Finns det något man skulle kunna ändra på så skulle det kunna vara lite mer space mellan föredragen för diskussioner och möten. Och så vill jag ju lyfta idén om en riktigt stor seglarbal på vintern där vi delar ut priser och umgås. Borde inte den kunna ligga samma helg…

Man hade tydligen sålt 1000 biljetter vilket var bra. Man har tydligen kapacitet till 1500 lördag och lika många söndag, och jag skulle bli förvånad om man landar där nästa år?
