The Chris Whiteman / John Toomey Quartet is a fantastic group of musicians co-led by jazz guitarist Chris Whiteman and veteran pianist John Toomey. Whiteman, who grew up in Montclair, New Jersey, is a seasoned performer and educator with advanced degrees from the University of Miami. He’s played legendary spots like Birdland, the Blue Note, the Monterey Jazz Festival, and the Hollywood Bowl, playing with a clean, fluid phrasing that feels like a modern nod to masters like Herb Ellis. He shares the driver's seat with John Toomey, a powerhouse behind the keys whose long jazz resume includes touring with Maynard Ferguson's historic big band.

Toomey blends beautiful, melodic ideas with a hard-swinging style that locks in perfectly with Whiteman to shape the group's signature groove. Rounding out the group is a rock-solid rhythm section with Randall Pharr on bass and Aaron Binder on drums. Pharr is the group's anchor, laying down a deep, resonant pocket and navigating complex arrangements with easy precision. Binder provides the spark, bringing an incredibly versatile touch to the kit whether he's working the brushes, dropping a subtle bossa groove, or driving a straight-ahead swing. Together, the four musicians deliver a masterclass in mainstream jazz, bridging timeless classics with a sharp, high-energy post-bop vibe that stays completely accessible.

At its heart, the quartet is all about a relaxed, organic conversation on stage that makes any venue feel like an intimate, authentic jazz club. Their setlist is a rich mix of tunes, shifting effortlessly between driving original compositions, reimagined grooves from icons like Thelonious Monk and Wayne Shorter, and warm, spontaneous treatments of Great American Standards like "Stella by Starlight" and "All the Things You Are". Driven by a shared love for improvisation, the band serves up a groove-forward performance that balances incredible musicianship with pure, feel-good swing.

Opening with The Reveler, Chris Whiteman on guitar sets an excellent lead off for the live performance with a super hard bop track that immediately showcases the quartet's tight chemistry. Guitarist Chris Whiteman takes the first solo, weaving intricate, bebop-influenced lines that dance effortlessly over the walking bass line by Aaron Binder. Pianist John Toomey is definitely up to the task with percussive block chords elevating the energy of the room. Excellent opener. Jobim's, Triste, anchored by Binder and Randall Pharr showcases the ensemble's versatility as they tackle the classic bossa nova with a light, sophisticated, touch. Whiteman's phrasing and masterful touch really illustrates the track nicely, and an elegant, cascading solo from Toomey leans into subtle harmonic shifts of the composition.

Comin' Home Baby leans heavily into a soulful groove anchored by Randall Pharr's deeply resonant bassline. Whiteman has great phrasing instincts, reminding me of a young George Benson with perfect punctuation by Toomey who also adds a poised, thought provoking solo of his own and Binder shines brightly driving the rhythm forward with expressive accents. On Victor Young's classic, Stella by Starlight, Toomey gets the center stage, outlining the track in a somewhat classical manner. Whiteman, Pharr, and Binder join and the track is full bop with Whiteman just easy teasing the melody with excellent instincts. In full swing this track is really one of the top tracks on the release. I had the pleasure to see sax phenom, Nicole Glover, in concert recently and I can just see her closing her eyes, head bopping as these guys groove. Yes, it really is that good.

Closing with Warren and Mack's, There Will Never Be Another You, Whiteman lays out the game plan slowly and then kicks out the stops on tis solid grove. Pharr on bass plucks out a really strong solo with light accompaniment by Binder and Whiteman. Toomey turns up the heat with a really nice slot solo of his own. He really can get a great groove going and this is it. With hot fingers and hammer accents, this is really is super. Whiteman takes the final leg with an in the pocket groove that will definitely get you sitting forward and taking notice. Binder takes the final lap with tight rhythms and double timed drumming. What a great release!

The Technocats are a soulful, Michigan-based jazz collective built around a pretty cool mission: bringing the original music of composer Gregg Hill to life. Born out of the tight-knit scene surrounding the Michigan State University Jazz Studies program, the group is all about bridging generations, mixing seasoned jazz veterans with some of the most exciting young players on the contemporary scene. The band actually took its name from a Gregg Hill tune that captured the high-energy vibe of late-night jam sessions, and that same spontaneous, collaborative spirit drives everything they do. They lean heavily into a classic, straight-ahead jazz sound, but they keep things fresh with sharp, modern arrangements that feel like a nod to the past while pushing firmly into the future. Co-led by bass trombonist Chris Glassman and guitarist Nathan Borton, the band operates as a true co-op. Instead of handing things off to outside arrangers, the musicians themselves take Hill's raw lead sheets and tailor them to highlight the specific voices in the room. Through their studio records on Cold Plunge Records—like their self-titled debut and their follow-up album, Passionata—the Technocats have built a reputation for tight groove and sophisticated chemistry, often jamming alongside great guests like saxophonist Walter Blanding, trumpeter Skylar Tang, and drummer Keith Hall.

Opening with Normality, Walter Blanding on sax and Skylar Tang on trumpet play a fanfare with Keith Hall on drums. The track builds slowly with Javier Enrique on bass, then Bryn Roberts on piano. A loose bop track with a tight melody showcases Blanding on soprano sax, seemingly floating on the rhythm of Hall and Roberts. Excellent opener. Driving, Traffic Jam really rolls, with interwoven solos by Nathan Borton on guitar, Chris Glassman on bass trombone, Tang on trumpet and Hall on bass, all driven by bassist Javier Enrique. Tang cuts loose with a really adventurous solo punctuated by Hall and Roberts who also really rolls. A strong trombone solo by Glassman will have you back on your heels bopping as this track shows no weakness.

Funky, Horse Feathers, is brass led with a prominent bass line by Enrique and his pairing with Borton on guitar is magical. Round solos by Tang, Blanding and Glassman really give it that New Orleans feel but keeping it contemporary. Very cool. Technocrats has a lighter but still a strong rhythmic feel. Glassman with muted trombone takes a strong lead coaxed along by Roberts and Hall. Borton drops back with a nicely phrased solo of his own with Hall and Roberts holding the rhythm firm. Enrique steps up with another essential solo of his own before tying it all up with a bow.

Title track, Passionata has a cool, Latin overlay with a larger band feel. Glassman steps up hard with a strong bass trombone lead with mostly only Roberts and Hall in support. This gives his playing plenty of room to breathe and Borton again rejoins with fleet fingered soloing of his own, handing off to fluid lead lines by Blanding on tenor sax. Wrapping the release is Double Play with it's swinging bottom. Borton goes first laying in a really nice solo followed by Glassman, Tang, Blanding on tenor and Roberts on piano. This is a tight release with plenty of great instrumental work. Check it out.

"Antone’s 50th" refers to the milestone celebration of Austin’s legendary blues club, Antone's Nightclub, marking half a century as "Austin's Home of the Blues." Founded by Clifford Antone in July 1975, the venue became globally famous for nurturing blues prodigies like Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimmie Vaughan, while hosting icons like Muddy Waters, B.B. King, and Buddy Guy.

Rather than just a calendar date, the 50th-anniversary campaign manifested as a massive multimedia project and an overarching musical collective known as the Antone’s 50th Allstars.

1. The Historical Foundation Clifford Antone started the venue with a singular ethos: “The Blues is so big that no one person could ever learn it in a lifetime.” Over its 50-year history, the club operated as a cross-generational classroom. It wasn't just a place to watch music; it was a sanctuary where Chicago blues masters routinely played alongside and mentored younger, local Texas players. The 50th-anniversary banner was constructed to preserve and advance this exact spirit.

2. The 50th Allstars Anniversary Releases

To commemorate the golden jubilee, a series of archival and newly produced projects were coordinated by New West Records and Blues Till 2 Recording Co.: • Antone's: 50 Years of the Blues (Box Set): A definitive 5-disc, 41-track comprehensive box set. It compiled unreleased live archive tapes dating back to the club's 1975 inception alongside classic tracks from the venue's house label, Antone's Records. The box set was packaged with a 200-page historical hardcover photo book titled Picture the Blues by Susan Antone and deep-dive historical liner notes written by iconic Texas music journalist Joe Nick Patoski. • The Last Real Texas Blues Album: A new studio double-LP centerpiece featured inside the box set. It paired legendary older standard-bearers with contemporary roots musicians, including collaborations featuring Bobby Rush, Jimmie Vaughan, Gary Clark Jr., Ruthie Foster, Sue Foley, and Charlie Sexton. • Antone's 50th Presents: Chicago Bound: Co-produced by Zach Ernst and Jacob Sciba, this standalone road-trip-themed project capped off the formal 50th-anniversary calendar. It followed a spiritual blues map tracking from Louisiana and Texas straight up to Chicago. The record featured an elite cast of roots masters cutting live-to-tape sessions—including Billy F Gibbons (ZZ Top), Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood (The Rolling Stones), Doyle Bramhall II, John Primer, Ivan Neville, and Kam Franklin.

3. The Ongoing Legacy

Today, "Antone's 50th" serves as a working testament to a venue that survived shifting musical trends, location moves, and the passing of its founder in 2006. By standardizing the archives and bringing living masters back into the studio under the Antone's 50th Allstars moniker, the project successfully bridges the historical memory of 1970s Austin with the next generation of live roots and blues music.

Opening with a stripped down Chicago Bound, a hot boogie, featuring John Primer on vocals and lead guitar, and Steve Bell on harmonica. Primer delivers traditional, clean finger work and Bell winds it out. Great opener. On R&B infused, I Wouldn't Treat a Dog The Way You Treated Me Kam Franklin really digs on on lead vocal backed by Zack Ernst and Brad Stivers on guitar and Marc Franklin on trumpet, Alex Schuefrumpf on trumpet, Art Edmaiston on sax and Tom Link on sax. Really strong. On Houng Dog Taylor's, Give Me Back My Wig, Doyle Bramhall II has lead vocal and guitar really catching a surprisingly great take on the dog. With JJ Johnson and Jay Moeller on drums and Derek O'Brien on guitar, this is terrific.

Anson Funderburgh strolls on with Albert Collins' Backstroke and he really lays it out there. Loved this guy since I saw him on David Sanborn's show back in the late 80's. He has such great style and Mark Kazanoff really cooks on sax. Great track. Billy Gibbons is game too with low slung, Hangin' On A Cliff joined by Mike Flanigin and Chris Layton. Gibbons has a special lope to his style that just drags you into a groove. Super!

Lurrie Bell does a really nice guitar stroll on Act Like You Love Me trading riffs with Funderburgh and Derek O’Brien,and Nick Connolly on barrelhouse piano. With Moeller on drums, Scott Nelson on bass and sassy sax work by Kaz and Joe Sublett another great addition. Wrapping the release is John Primer and Lil Ed on Morganfield's, Got My Mojo Working. Steve Bell has the harp and winds it out pretty good and Lil' Ed on trademark slide guitar spars with Primer on single line lead. This is a strong closer with Rodrigo Mantovani on bass, Sumito Ariyoshi on piano and Kenny Beedy Eyes Smith on drums.

Clarence Hines is a trombone player, writer, and teacher who has spent his career playing all over the world and helping the next generation of players find their sound. Right now, he hangs his hat at the University of North Florida as the Director of the School of Music, where he keeps busy coaching students in jazz trombone and big band arranging. Over the years, he has shared the stage with a wild mix of music royalty, trading notes with everyone from pop icons like Frankie Valli and the Temptations to heavy-hitting jazz names like David Sanborn. Whether he is writing charts for major concert halls or clinics, he knows how to make a large ensemble feel alive and easygoing.

With his latest album, Along the Way, he finally put his own spin on the big band tradition by stepping out as a leader for his own jazz orchestra. Released on OA2 Records, the album is a collection of originals and fresh takes on old standards that gives his stacked 17-piece lineup plenty of room to stretch out and stretch their legs. The music avoids the stiff, heavy feel of typical big bands, opting instead for a bright, conversational style where the arrangements feel loose, natural, and fun to play. When he isn't steering the ship for his orchestra or working with his college students, you can usually find him traveling for clinics or sitting in with symphony orchestras and local jazz groups.

Opening with In Transit, an energetic, Latin rhythm infused track, Clarence Hines wastes no time establishing the orchestra's tight ensemble precision. With brass blazing and woodwinds bringing the temperature down to a simmer, tenor saxophonist Doug Stone steps up with a hard riffing statement that really cooks. Hines steps up with a lot of heat of his own really blowing a monsterous trombone solo. Joshua Bowlus on piano brings down the volume but not the heat with solid phrasing of his own before the rejoining of the band. Hot opener! A Tad of Thad highlights the drum bop rhythms of Jared Schonig with muted trumpets and warm sax melody, punctuated by Bowlus on piano. Clay Jenkins on trumpet starts the dialog with tenor saxophonist Doug Stone, who really swings his intense solo phrasing. Bowles rolls it all together on piano bringing back the flow for a tight summit.

All This Time is a quiet, reflective, modal piece that showcases the orchestra’s ability to handle delicate, shifting musical colors. Trumpeter Clay Jenkins delivers an expressive solo that floats gracefully over the lush backdrop, complemented perfectly by a warm bed of saxs and Bowlus' expressive piano work deepens the song's late-night atmosphere. Wrapping the release is What's Up With That? with Schonig driving the band with a hectic pace. Todd DelGiudice on alto sax and Stone on tenor really create a driving groove trading emphatic phrases, framed by a solid bed of brass. Solid closer for a cool release.

Christopher Wyze is a seasoned blues singer, songwriter, and harmonica player who proves it's never too late to start a brand new chapter. For decades, Christopher held down a forty-year career in advertising while singing blues covers on the weekends. But everything changed in his mid-sixties when he took a few deep, immersive trips down to Clarksdale, Mississippi. Soaking in the Delta air, he started turning his own poems into original, swampy roadhouse blues. Fronting his powerhouse band, Christopher Wyze & The Tellers, his story-rich, natural songwriting quickly caught the industry's attention, turning this late-bloomer into a breakout voice on the modern roots scene.

Recording for Big Radio Records, Christopher and the band have been on a serious roll with a string of acclaimed releases. Their 2024 debut, Stuck in the Mud, was tracked at the legendary FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals and cooked up the chart-topping hit "Back to Clarksdale." They backed that up with a raw live album that took home the 2025 Blues Blast Music Award for Best New Artist Debut. Their latest project, Naptown Blues, drops them right back home in Indiana to tip their hats to 1920s Indianapolis guitar-and-piano legends Leroy Carr and Scrapper Blackwell. Mixing heavy Delta grooves with easygoing Americana, Christopher keeps things grounded, literate, and completely authentic.

Opening with Leroy Carr's, I'm Going Back to Tennessee Christopher Wyze is upfront on vocal accompanied by John Boyle III on electric guitar. An easy going shuffle, with Wyze spicing it up with harmonica this is a cool opener. Classic blues track, How Long—How Long Blues is another timeless Leroy Carr staple. With only a simple guitar vamp, Wyze's vocals shine and his harmonica phrasing, leaves plenty of room for moaning guitar work by Boyle.

Carr's, My Own Lonesome Blues has a solid groove with snappy guitar work by Boyle and solid, soulful harmonica work by Wyze. Scrapper Blackwell's, Kokomo Blues is my favorite track on the release with it's powerful melody and Wyze's best vocals on the release. Boyle really works the strings on this one and Wyze's harmonica work is aggressive.

Carr's, You Got to Reap What You Sow is really anchored nicely by Gerry Murphy on bass and Boyle's shimmery electric guitar work contrasts nicely with his own single string lead work. Another solid harmonica solo by Wyze balances his own lead vocal work for a strong best track. Original track, Birthday in Jail completes the set with strong bones. Boyle, who carries the structure on acoustic guitar, trades solos with Wyze on harmonica wrapping this solid blues set.

Oz Noy is an incredibly smooth Israeli-American guitarist who has spent the last few decades rewriting the rules on how jazz, funk, rock, and blues can play together. He started picking up the guitar back in Israel when he was just 10 years old, and he was so naturally good at it that he was playing professional studio sessions by 13. After becoming the go-to session guy for big records and TV shows back home, he packed his bags for New York City in 1996 to see what else he could do. Since then, he’s made a massive splash in the NYC scene, winning people over with a vibe that's all about deep, infectious grooves and wild sonic experimentation.
When he isn’t tracking or touring with massive icons like Sting, Cyndi Lauper, or drum legend Dave Weckl, he’s busy releasing his own killer records. Albums like Fuzzy, Schizophrenic, and his latest drop, Recreational Substance, show off exactly why Guitar Player magazine keeps throwing awards at him for being one of the most unique players out there. Fans absolutely love him for his insane pedalboard setups and his ability to make complex jazz improvisation feel like a house party. Ronnie Earl - Blues For The West Side

Ronnie Earl is the kind of guitar player who doesn’t need to rush. Born Ronald Horvath in Queens, New York, he picked up the guitar a bit later than most, finding his calling at twenty-one after catching a live Muddy Waters show. He eventually moved to Boston, soaked up the New England blues scene, and took the last name Earl as a nod to blues master Earl Hooker. By 1979, he was playing guitar for Roomful of Blues, spending nearly a decade touring and anchoring their big, swing-heavy sound.

In the mid-1980s, he decided to slow things down and focus on his own voice, forming his longtime band, The Broadcasters. Named after a classic early Fender guitar, the group became his musical home for the next forty years. Together, they developed a sound that moves easily between traditional blues, late-night jazz grooves, and deep soul.

What really defines his music is how much he leaves out. While other guitarists lean on effects pedals and fast solos, he plugs his vintage Fender Stratocaster straight into an amp and lets his fingers do the talking. It’s a clean, incredibly warm tone that relies completely on feeling. Over dozens of albums and a career that has earned him multiple Guitar Player of the Year awards, he has focused entirely on the heart of the music, proving that sometimes a single, well-placed note can say a lot more than a hundred fast ones.

If you’re looking for the sonic definition of a good time, look no further than Whanganui, New Zealand’s own BB & The Bullets. This isn’t the kind of blues-rock you sit down and analyze—it’s the kind that sounds best cranked up in a packed tavern or out on a back porch with a cold drink. Fronted by veteran guitar slinger and singer Brian Baker, the band is held down by Stu "The Glue" Duncan on bass and Brad McMillan behind the drum kit. As a power trio, these guys have that rare, unspoken chemistry where they just lock into a groove and let it roll, a vibe they’ve been perfecting across local stages and late-night jams for years.

They caught a massive wave with their 2025 debut, High Tide, turning enough heads to get picked up by the legendary French label Dixiefrog Records and proving their brand of fiery, slide-heavy blues can translate anywhere on the map.

Opening with blues rocker, Midnight Rider, Brian Baker on lead vocal and guitar sets the pace with Stu Duncan on bass and Brad McMillan on drums. A track definitely spawned from the roots in southern rock, Baker's guitar riffs keep the train moving. Freak Show, is a cool track with a lumbering pace, exaggerated by McMillan on drums. Baker on lead vocal keeps things moving with a tidy guitar recurring guitar riff and backing vocals by Duncan and McMillan add depth to the track. Bakers double stopped guitar solos and McMillan's rock solid bottom gives this track a definite edge.

Title track, Wrong Side Of The River is a strong, slower paced blues ballad with a dark melody and nicely blended vocals. Baker breaks loose with a soulful guitar solo working nicely with his own lead vocals and blended really nicely with Duncan and McMillan. Peter Green's, Oh Well is up next with a rockier, less psychedelic version of a pretty strong track. I really enjoy hearing this old classic and what BB has done to bring it up to date.

Black Crow is an almost reggae track with a rhythmic guitar/ drum chemistry anchored by Duncan on bass. I like how Baker stretches on guitar giving it just a nudge more edge. Possibly my favorite track on the release. Wrapping the release is rocker, Crawl Right In with it's driving feel. A strong bottom, reinforced vocals on the refrain and scorching guitar riffs really gives the track a unitary feeling, the driving guitar riffs and McMillan's heavy handed drum work gives the track a heavy edge. Powerful closer.

Greg Chako is a veteran jazz guitarist and composer who has been letting his instrument do the talking for over forty years. Born in Cincinnati, he caught the jazz bug early, eventually packing his bags for the Berklee College of Music to hone his chops. From there, his musical compass took him far beyond Ohio. He spent nearly two decades gigging, recording, and leading bands across major Asian cultural hubs like Hong Kong, Singapore, Shanghai, and Tokyo. Those years on the international circuit shaped his signature warm tone and easygoing, lyrical style on the fretboard. Life threw plenty of curveballs along the way—including standard musician hazards like carpal tunnel and some serious health battles—but Chako always found his way back to the music. After returning to Cincinnati, he kept the momentum going by signing with Mint 400 Records, earning a well-deserved spot in the Cincinnati Jazz Hall of Fame, and even writing a memoir about his journey. With more than two dozen albums under his belt, his record Hard Bop: For the Record is a perfect example of what he does best. Stepping into a piano-less quintet format, Chako lets his guitar handle the heavy lifting for the band's harmony, seamlessly blending classic bebop grooves with smooth Latin rhythms. It’s the sound of a musician who completely respects the old-school masters but is perfectly content carving out his own path..

Opening with Mozambique a super Afro-Cuban groove that features the two-horn frontline of Brooks Giles on sax and Spencer Merk on trombone and Alex Merk on drums. Greg Chako steps up first delivering a straight up solo that really stretches the track superbly. Giles steps up with a muscular, fluid run that establishes the track's driving energy and Spencer Merk is not far behind with a really nice trombone solo that will blow your mind. David Lloyd on bass stretches the track with some deep grooves before the band pulls back in and Alex really splashes on drums for the close of a super opener. Ballad To The Bone features Spencer delivering a deeply soulful phrasing on trombone, joined by Giles on sax. His continued lead gives this track a beautiful, lyrical darkness, punctuated by Lloyd on bass. Chako's own understated, blues-tinted guitar phrasing floats on the melody, giving the track just the perfect balance. Very nice.

Soar With The Wind is an uptempo, hard driver opening with Giles and Merk in tandem. Chako takes the first solo showing his lyrical precision with a bouncy phrasing that bounces cleanly over the driving rhythm section. Giles continues the work on sax with really strong work of his own and Spencer on trombone keeps pushing without breaking a sweat. Alex really ties it all up with an extended drum solo bringing back the chorus. Time To Play is an understated track built over the solid bass work of Lloyd. Giles and Spencer set the stage but it's Giles who really breaks this thing open with a stunning sax solo and Spencer's follow up trombone work is tops. Deceptively strong.

Mellow-Dee has an easy 3/4 time with Giles and Spencer laying the groundwork before Spencer belts out a really strong trombone melody. Chako stays in blues territory with a soulful, nicely phrased guitar solo and Giles really tears it up with a frantic soprano sax solo that gives the piece a real counter. Wrapping the release is soulful rocker, For The Record with it's warm melody courtesy Giles and Spencer. Lloyd and Alex really develop a nice funky groove and Giles is the first one anchoring the theme. Chako on guitar really widens the pocket with bluesy phrasing and jazzy chords and Merk on trombone really sails. Lloyd steps forward with another fine bass solo backed by Alex on rim shots and coming back out really funky with Glies and Spencer closing. Solid closer for a really nice release.

Lately, Eric has been taking his music to a whole new level by heading down to the hallowed grounds of FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Opening with title track, I Don't Belong With You, a soulful ballad featuring Eric Jerardi on vocals. Cindy Walker and Marie Lewey really add a lot of richness with their warm backing vocals and Jerardi's vital punctuation on guitar turns into a tone laden solo with real grit with Michael James on guitars and Eric Colvin on keys, drums and bass. Excellent opener. A Man Ain't A Man Until His Father Dies, really has a spiritual feel with genuine reverence for the subject matter. Walker and Lewey again play a key role in accentuating the depth of the track with excellent lead vocals by Jerardi. With strong vocal presentation, super composition and overall restraint, this is a top radio selection.

Hard Being There has a understated back beat and again power backing vocals by Walker and Lewey combined with Michael James on keys, and guitar reinforcement with knife like precision. Your Birthday may be the greatest composition on the release with it's beautiful styling and presentation. It just has a special melody, sentimental lyrics and a deeply dug guitar solo. ("I've never seen that shade of blue on you" is just one of those special phrases placed perfectly...). Excellent!

Another track that has me sitting up listening in particular is Light Danced Through Your Window... just has a special glow with Jerardi on lead vocal singing the call and Lewey and Walker singing the response with the warm keywork of Colvin keeping it tight, and then the lush guitar soloing by Jerardi...masterful. Wrapping the release is uptempo, When Nature Speaks with springy vocal delivery by Jerardi and super drum work by Colvin. Solid closer.

Mike Dangeroux is a strong guitar player, singer, and all-around musical powerhouse who has been tearing up the Chicago music scene for years. Born right in the windy city, he eventually headed out east to sharpen his chops and graduate from the world-famous Berklee College of Music in Boston. Since then, he has put in serious work on the stage, earning himself a well-deserved induction into the Chicago Blues Hall of Fame as a Master Blues Guitarist. You can still regularly catch him blowing the roof off the place at Buddy Guy's Legends, one of the most iconic blues joints in town. Over the years, Mike has shared the stage with a massive lineup of legends, jamming alongside everyone from blues icons like Buddy Guy and Koko Taylor to funk masters The Commodores and reggae royalty The Wailers. The guy has a crazy deep catalog of over five hundred songs in his back pocket, allowing him to easily switch between intimate solo acoustic sets and leading his full, high-energy Mike Dangeroux Orchestra through a mix of blues, rock, soul, funk, reggae, and jazz. When he is not playing live, he is a total studio rat, running his own independent label called Raw Dawg Records where he writes, produces, and engineers his own records while playing almost all the instruments himself.

Opening with It Feels So Right the album starts off with an upbeat, soul-infused track with Dangeroux sounding quite like Donald Fagen. Smooth organ and piano lines establish a tight pocket and a tight little guitar solo wraps it up. Nothing's Gonna Keep Me Away is a laid back blues rocker with a real nice melody, warm keys and a nicely structured guitar solo.

Where's My Money is a high energy rocker with driving drums and vocals, warm keys, and solid guitar riffs giving the track a real zing. You Can't Break Me is a standup rocker with a fine guitar solo allowing Dangeroux a real opportunity to show what he's got.

Bluesy ballad, The Silence Is Talking uses a standard blues format with a straightforward melody. A firm bass line and nicely woven organ work deliver Dangeroux's vocals and a flamey guitar solo delivers the goods. Wrapping the release is funky pop number, Right Love Wrong Time Again has a contemporary, radio approach with synth horns and drums carrying some of Dangeroux's best vocals on the release.

Martin Luther McCoy—who often just goes by Martin Luther—is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist who has spent years carving out his own lane in modern soul. He is probably best known for his work alongside hip-hop legends The Roots and neo-soul pioneers like Cody ChesnuTT. He also turned a lot of heads when he stepped onto the big screen, playing the Jimi Hendrix-inspired character "Jo-Jo" in the movie Across the Universe. McCoy keeps things fully independent, putting out his music through his own label, Rebel Soul Records. His sound is all about mixing the raw, gritty vibes of 1970s funk and rock with smooth R&B rhythms and thoughtful, conscious songwriting.

Opening with Reimagine The World, MLM on lead vocal sets a funky, hip hop rhythm with Rhodes keys, doubled vocals and a tight kick drum. Howard Wiley pushes the track nicely with a soaring saxophone solo that expands the envelope nicely. Martin Luther McCoy steps up under his alias Martin Luther "The Real McCoy" to deliver a fiery electric guitar solo over a bed of warm Rhodes keys. Now is a really strong R&B track with rich vocals and complimentary backing vocals over keys and a simple drum snap and a strong yet understated guitar solo by MLM. Very nice.

Welcome Back Love really develops a funky, Funkadelic like groove with simple drums and rhythm guitar but serious deep bass sound and a guest vocal from Stic of Dead Prez on rap. Better Than Alright is one of my favorites on the release with a Curtis Mayfield/Impressions feel. Producer Dave Council anchors the song's texture with a fluid, electric piano, organ and synth fills.

Turning 21 is a strong vocal track with cool, Stevie Wonder influences. Dave Council works the synth and piano really rounding the track nicely. Widowmaker is another of my favorite tracks with a strong taste of my man, D'Angelo (RIP). The rhythm syncopation, lagging drums and excellent vocal blending is spot on. This track alone could carry the album for me. Wrapping the release is Black Sugar, with a serious message but delivered over a contagious groove. Dave Council on bass, and drum programming by Chris Paxton drives this groove with nicely interwoven backing vocals. Solid closer.

Opening with Runnin' Ragged Jeni Grouws shows her tradedmark vocal styling set up over a contemporary country rock format. Brian Allen on bass drives the bottom with Casey Wasner on drums, Mike Hicks on keys and stinging guitar riffs by Johnny Duke. Setting up a nice bass line, Allen paces the track and Grouws pairs with Kyshona for some really smoothly vocal harmonies on When I Get Back to You. Keeping it mellow, Emmanuel Echem on flugelhorn, Roy Agee on trombone and Evan Cobb on sax form a warm backing for this definite radio player.

Let Your Eyes Lay Low really has a cool slinky feel with lush vocals, a Latin rhythm and super guitar effects by Duke. Hicks keyboard work adds a lot of tension and Anne Harris' violin adds just the right touch of style. Very nice. Radio track, Fool , has a solid melody and country pop arrangement. A strong showcase for Grouws vocals, with Drew Smithers laying down some really soulful slide guitar and Dukes on acoustic guitar, a solid entry to the setlist.

Heartbreak and Misery is a nice clean radio entry to the set with a strong melody sassy vocals and warm backing by Echem, Agee and Cobb. Duke really nails some of his best work on this track with excellent phrasing and tone. Wrapping the release with Make Your Way, Grouws picked her best track for last. A solid ballad, features Grouws on acoustic guitar and lead vocal, paired with Kyshona and a strong, suspenseful bottom by Allen and Wasner on drums. Duke weaves in some light, tasty guitar lead and Hicks on piano makes the track glisten. Strong closer.

I don't typically do this but I am reviewing a single so no, you aren't mistaken. One of my regular promoters sent this new release, Cape Cod Girl, a single from a new to be released album, Demise. Featuring one of my favorite guitar slingers, Monster Mike Welch on lead guitar, Brooks Milgate on piano and organ, Brad Hellen on bass, Marty Richards on drums, Sax Gordon Beadle on bari and tenor saxes and Alan Arena and Joe Russo on vocals, this track is obviously headed for the radio. With a solid groove and heavy guitar riffs from Welch, this is a real stinger. Looking Forward to the release of Demise.

When she isn't touring or recording, she hangs out at Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music, teaching the next generation how to nail those classic fingerpicking styles.

Opening with ON MY WAY HOME, a cool, acoustic instrumental track , showcases Donna Herula on a National Tricone slide guitar while Tony Wittrock provides the supportive acoustic harmony lines and Jon Shain contributes complementary guitar work. Solid opener. Title track, COLD FEET, a funk rocker bringing to mind the great groove of Creedence featuring Herula on lead vocal central soloist with sharp electric slide guitar fills cutting through a steady backing with Wittrock and Shain on guitars, Marc Edelstein on bass and Beedy Eyes Smith on drums. Backing vocals by Kary Ream, Rebecca Toon really add nicely to the mix on this super radio track.

Skip James', CYPRESS GROVE BLUES begins with atmospheric darkness but develops into a cool, contemporary blues track. Herula develops the tracks nicely with her adept use of her resonator and nicely orchestrated electric slide guitar work by Wittrock. WHAT YOU GONNA DO? is a cool, sassy track with soulful vocals by Herula and featuring Steve Eisen on sax and BB King like phrasing by Shain.

THINGS CAN CHANGE is my favorite track on the release with it's R&B rhythm and some of Herula's best vocals on the release. John Jochem on harmonica adds some real depth and the rich organ work by Alton Smith and backing vocals by Candy LaFlora make this the whole package. Wrapping the release is a fired up cover of Elmo James', DUST MY BROOM with Herula ripping on slide. With Wittrock keeping rhythm, Edelstein on bass, and Beedy Eyes holding it tight, this is an excellent closer for a power filled release.

Luther Dickinson is an incredible guitarist, singer, and producer who really channelled the spirit of the Deep South when he co-founded the North Mississippi Allstars. Growing up as the son of the legendary Memphis producer and musician Jim Dickinson, music was practically in Luther's DNA. He spent his formative years soaking up the raw, hypnotic hill country blues vibe directly from local icons like R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough. In 1996, he and his brother Cody hitched up to form the Allstars, blending those old-school acoustic blues traditions with a heavy dose of psychedelic rock, jam-band energy, and funk. They instantly shook up the roots music scene, landing multiple Grammy nods and turning their live shows into legendary, high-octane celebrations.
Outside of the Allstars, Luther has been all over the rock and roots world as a go-to collaborator. He spent a killer four-year stretch as the lead guitarist for The Black Crowes, ripping solos on records like Warpaint and touring the world. He’s also the kind of guy who can't sit still creatively; he’s jumped into supergroups like The Word, dropped soulful solo acoustic projects, and produced a ton of records for up-and-coming roots artists. Whether he’s sliding on a cigar box guitar or keeping the traditional sounds of Mississippi alive, Luther is all about keeping the music honest, loose, and moving forward.

Ron Vincent is a seasoned veteran of the New York jazz scene, widely respected for his smooth feel and tasteful control behind the kit. A Rhode Island native, he started carving out his musical path at the Berklee College of Music back in the early seventies. After graduating, he hit the highway to pay his dues across the country, spending a few formative years gigging around Kansas City before making the definitive move to New York in 1982. He quickly became a go-to sideman in the city's competitive club circuit, eventually tracking on roughly one hundred records alongside jazz royalty like Phil Woods, Lee Konitz, and Art Farmer.

Vincent’s profile jumped to the next level in 1989 when he locked down the drum chair for the legendary baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan. He spent seven years anchoring both Mulligan's Quartet and the Re-Birth of the Cool Tentet, keeping that tight musical partnership rolling until Mulligan passed away in 1996. When he isn't touring or playing, Vincent is big on passing the torch to the next generation. He runs masterclasses at universities across the states and teaches percussion on the faculty at Manhattanville College. Now, he’s expanding his legacy by stepping right into the spotlight as a composer and arranger, marking a fresh chapter as a bandleader..

Opening with Duke Ellington’s Angelica, Dave Brandom on alto sax, Tim Armacost on tenor sax and Matt Garrison on tenor sax set the stage with a warm melody underpinned by Ron Vincent on drums and Bill Mays on piano. With a swinging Latin beat, Garrison steps out with a super sax solo followed by the mastery of Mays on piano and Steve Cardenas rolls in on guitar with clean, warm guitar runs. Solid opener. On title track, Ray's Hat Trick, Armacost lead on bass clarinet with it's deep throaty sound. Matt Garrison on soprano saxophone fleshes out the melody with an intermediate solo of his own before passing to Brandom on alto. Cardenas hits the road running with really nice guitar phrasing and Dan Johnson and Vincent create a great swaying groove.

Bill Mays' ballad Still Life has a very delicate texture, almost orchestral in composition with Armacost on the bottom again with his bass clarinet and really beautiful piano work by Mays. Dave Brandom joins with a wispy flute solo that floats gently over Armacost on clarinet, and Cardenas' guitar work borders on classical. Very nice. Cardenas has center stage on his own composition, New Moon with quiet guitar expressions and fluid piano soling by Mays.

Shuffle, Mike, has a cool easy feel with Cardenas and Brandom on flute leading the way on melody. This really is a nice track and Brandom really has a chance to spread his wings on flute, followed by a meaty bass solo by Johnson. Mays picks up the baton, leading on piano with plenty of swagger and joined back with the full boat... Armacost on bass clarinet, Garrison on tenor and Vincent on drums. Strong track.

Wrapping the release is Wee, and Vincent opens with a crisp drum solo feeding the groove to Cardenas who gives it wings. A brisk yet thoughtful piano solo by Mays and passed man to man through Brandom, Armacost and Garrison. Vincent takes back the reins for a late session workout before the final blowout with Brandom, Armacost and Garrison. Strong closer.

Gerry Hundt is a total musical shape-shifter who’s been tearing up the Chicago and Midwest blues circuits for over twenty years. Most blues fans first caught wind of him back when he was the secret weapon in Nick Moss & The Flip Tops, touring hard and proving he could play pretty much anything with strings or keys—switching seamlessly between guitar, harmonica, bass, and Hammond organ. He’s got a massive respect for old-school acoustic styles and post-war electric grooves, which even scored him a couple of Blues Music Award nods for his crazy good mandolin playing. These days, he’s running things out of Northwest Indiana, putting out raw, unpolished roots music on his own terms under his Steady Groove Music label.

Opening with Pimenta, a energetic instrumental, Gerry Hundt creates a bell like solo crafted primarily from harmonics over a solid rhythm supplemented by a steady drum beat Tom Lehnert. Chicago style shuffle, Caught In The Middle, a Chicago-style blues is up next and Hundt crafts a real tasty Elmore James (Lil Ed) style solo on slide under his own vocals backed by Renaud Lesire on bass and backing vocals and Lehnert on drums.

Kid Man Blues, really has that vintage blues sound with Hundt on mandolin showing definite stylistic influences of mandolin player Johnny Young, complimented nicely with his own harmonica. Very cool. Eddie C. Campbell's, Runnin' Wild, has a real driven spunk with forceful rock guitar rhythms and low octave guitar work with country riffs and traditional blues structures, anchored by Lehnert's drum and the steady hand of Lesire on bass.

I'm Gone has a steady almost funky rhythm/lead guitar alternating under Hundt's vocals, creating a high stepping feel, developed during Hundt's time performing with the Corey Dennison Band (under the title The Deacon). Strange Things Happening is a cool pseudo rocker with interesting story telling lyrics by Hundt and nice surf bends mixed in. With everything in the stew including a key change, this is a cool track. Wrapping the release is End Of The Day Blues, a slow blues, dialed up to 9 with ultra cool effects, slide, and low octave soloing. Twisting Peter Green, Elmore James and Earl Hooker and squeezing it from Hundt's fingers, this is a really strong closer.

Skip James - I'm So Glad

The Skip James was easily one of the most haunting, brilliant, and uniquely eerie figures in the entire history of the Delta blues. Born near Bentonia, Mississippi in 1902, he didn't sound like anyone else of his era. While other bluesmen were stomping their feet and playing driving rhythms, James was casting musical spells. He tuned his guitar to a moody, minor-key open D, picked the strings with a lightning-fast three-finger technique, and sang in a ghostly, high-pitched falsetto that could give you chills. In 1931, he recorded a handful of absolute masterpieces like "Devil Got My Woman" and "Hard Time Killing Floor Blues." But bad luck struck hard: the Great Depression hit right as his records dropped, sales tanked, and a frustrated James walked away from music entirely. For the next 30 years, he lived a completely quiet life, working in lumber camps, doing some bootlegging, and even serving as a church minister, seemingly lost to history. Then came one of the greatest second acts in music. In 1964, a group of passionate young blues enthusiasts tracked a frail James down in a Mississippi hospital and convinced him to play again. When he stepped onto the stage at the Newport Folk Festival that summer, the audience was completely stunned. Despite three decades of silence, his eerie voice and intricate guitar skills were completely flawless. He spent his final five years finally getting his flowers—touring, recording new albums, and watching rock royalty like Eric Clapton and Cream cover his songs. Though he passed away in 1969, his induction into the Blues Hall of Fame cemented what music fans already knew: Skip James was an absolute original who helped shape the bedrock of modern rock and blues.

Russ Anixter's Hippie Big Band isn't your standard, straight-laced jazz ensemble. It’s an unconventional, hard-grooving 11-piece New York collective that takes the wild, improvisational freedom of late-1960s counterculture rock and smashes it together with the sophisticated horn charts of large-ensemble jazz. Formed in 2019, the band treats classic tracks from the Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Little Feat, and Miles Davis like raw canvases—stretching them out with massive horn arrangements, unexpected rhythmic shifts, and plenty of room for heavy jamming. The group keeps a tight, dedicated lineup of killer musicians who are regulars in New York’s elite studio, Broadway, and jazz circles. The whole project is the brainchild of veteran arranger, orchestrator, and trombonist Russ Anixter. Russ grew up in San Francisco during the peak of the psychedelic era, so his musical DNA was permanently shaped by the fluid, sprawling, cross-genre jams of hometown bands like Santana and the Dead. He eventually headed East to serious up his game, earning a Master's from the Manhattan School of Music. When he isn't fronting the big band, Russ is a massive behind-the-scenes force in the Broadway theater industry, spending over three decades supervising and preparing scores for massive hits like Wicked, Jersey Boys, and The Lion King.

Opening with the Beatles, I Saw Her Standing There, Russ Axiter's Hippie Big Band transforms this 60's pop icon into a pseudo, movie soundtrack with genuine jazz overlay. Guitarist Michael Aarons handles a ripping, rock solo, with vibraphonist Bill Hayes and a full horn section of Matt Hong, Stan Harrison, Frank Vacin on saxes, Matt Owens on trumpet, Audrey Flores on french horn, Dan Levine and Jack Schatz on trombones, Steve Count on bass and Scott Neumann on drums. Dr. John's, I Walk on Guilded Splinters really grooves with dense, dark congss by Hayes and syncopated horn punches interwoven just like the Dr ordered. Harrison really gets his clarinet rolling and a deep bass trombone by Schatz really hits the spot. My favorite track on the release.

The Dead's, Shakedown Street gets a full orchestral rework but maintains the funky dance feel. Saxophonist Matt Hong cuts loose with a soulful alto saxophone solo, and Matt Owens' synthesized trumpet solo gived the track a lighter feel but his solo is anything but, and Stan Harrison adds a healthy tenor sax solo of his own giving the track additional depth. Joe Zawinul's, A Remark You Made, showcases Levine on trombone and he kills it with excellent feel and tone. Hong on alto sax adds lush richness to the already wealthy composition.

Wrapping the release is Led Zeps No Quarter, coupled with Miles' Bitches Brew, Owens and Vacin create an interesting blend of the Prince of Darkness with the No Quarter vamp playing underneath highlighted by Hayes on vibes and the understated muted trumpet work by Owens blowing the melody. As No Quarter continues on, I love the soprano play by Vacin who literally blows the doors off. Leave it to Anixter fo pull off a Gil Evans like arrangement pulling it all back into shape for a final run to the end. Very interesting.

Russ Anixter's Hippie Big Band ingeniously morphs familiar rock and funk anthems into sophisticated, horn-driven landscapes, reaching its absolute pinnacle on a hypnotic rendition of "I Walk on Guilded Splinters" that stands out as the recording's definitive highlight. This collection is essential listening for the closing "No Quarter / Bitches Brew" medley alone, which pairs a legendary heavy-rock vamp with a brooding jazz fusion blueprint to deliver a staggering, reinspired climax.

Jeremy Green is a super talented contemporary guitarist and songwriter who has been making waves in the modern jazz fusion and rock scenes. Known for his clean technique, soulful melodies, and killer solos, he has a knack for blending complex instrumental setups with a smooth, groove-heavy vibe. Over the years, he has really grown as a bandleader, moving from straightforward jazz-rock jams into massive, layered studio projects. His overall style is all about great tone and sharp production, making him a standout independent artist for anyone who loves great guitar playing. His new release is a massive showcase for his personal growth as both a player and a musical director. On this project, he takes the lead as the main composer, arranger, and producer while guiding an absolute powerhouse lineup of guest musicians. Rather than letting the star-studded features overshadow him, his distinct guitar voice stays right at the center of the music, anchoring the heavy funk grooves and complex rock textures. The set show off his ability to balance high-energy shredding with a mature sense of phrasing and pacing.

Opening with In Motion, you immediately hear an incredible groove by Will Lee on bass and Keith Carlock on drums locking down a tight groove with punchy horns by Mark Levron, giving Jeremy Green an excellent fertile bed of funk to just rip the doors off. Hard driving, He's Grinding, rides on the massive drum rhythm of Carlock and Green's absolute comfort throwing down lush guitar phrasing and ripping runs. There's no competition between Carlock and Green... what a team!

Jazz legend Mike Stern steps in on Where The Sun Shines The Brightest joining Rich Brown who really plays his butt off on bass. Carlock is explosive on drums and Green takes the track for a super ride with lush, creative guitar solo leading to Stern's unimatable signature sound who pushes the boundary even further. Brown lays down an exception solo of his own supported primarily by the intense work of Carlock making this certainly one of my favorite tracks on this release. Terrific!

And Ah WHAT? is another extremely strong track anchored by Jimmy Haslip and Carlock. Guest Allen Hinds is an excellent partner for Green exchanging explosive guitar riffs with Green, and Haslip adds his own signature trademark sound giving this an over the top aura. Wow!

Funky bouncer, Tee Shot features another guitar fusion phenom, Oz Noy pushing Green even further to great resolve. Chase Baird is up on this one with some lush sax and Green's guitar work slices through the melody like a sabre. Wrapping the release is Sir Robin, with a smoother, more lavish composition featuring Baird on sax and Haslip with crisp lead bass phrasing. Green sails over the melody with focused solo phrases and Haslip interjects dome really nice phrases of his own before Baird cuts loose with some of his nicest sax work on the release. The track is very cohesive with nicely woven packets of explosive instrumental genius for a solid close of a totally enjoyable release.

Bywater Call is a powerhouse seven-piece crew out of Toronto that’s been tearing up the Southern soul and roots-rock scene since 2017. Fronted by Meghan Parnell’s raw, whiskey-and-honey vocals and Dave Barnes’ greasy slide guitar work, these guys embrace a super loose, jam-heavy vibe that makes every live show feel completely spontaneous. They’ve got this killer, free-flowing chemistry where gritty blues-rock, gospel keys, and jazz-funk horns just bleed together into a soulful Americana stew. They're basically road warriors, constantly touring the world and dropping acclaimed records like Shepherd and their latest jam, Broken Souvenirs. If you dig organic music that isn't over-rehearsed and actually has some room to breathe, this is your new favorite band.

Bywater Call opens their latest release, Broken Souvenirs with Hold Me Down, a deep soul grooving track that immediately establishes the band’s loose, trademark. Lead vocalist, Meghan Parnell’s vocals are front and center, backed by Claire Davis and Joanna Mohammed, oozing with soul, with authentic trumpet backing by Stephen Dyte and anchored by rock solid drums by Bruce McCarthy and Mike Meusel on bass. On No One Else Here, Parnell is way out front with Andrew Moljgun on keys and Dyte on trumpet, providing a punchy rocking track with Dave Barnes wailing on guitar under the track.

Way To Go, has a driving rhythm with powerful vocals and grinding guitar riffs by Barnes. Backing vocals by Tafari Anthony and punchy horn work by Dyte really gets the track cranking and Barnes winds up the slide really giving this track a true 70's soul vibe. Ballad, Clutter, has a country framework with Moljgun on banjo and and Parnell leading the way on vocal with rich backing vocals by Davis and Mohammed. Very nice.

How Long is my favorite track on the release with a soulful, pseudo funky groove by McCarthy and Parnell just riding the wave, backed by Anthony and with Moljgun on keys. Wrapping the release is Yardsale, a slower track with powerful vocals by Parnell, Davis and Mohammed. Another strong radio likely track with a solid melody, features Moljgun on keys/strings, Alex McMaster on cello. Solid closer for a cohesive soulful release.

Cedar County Cobras are an Americana duo from Eastern Iowa known for mixing Delta blues, early country, folk, and rural Americana into a lively, distinctive sound. The band has been performing for over a decade, building a reputation for energetic live shows. Guitarist Tom Spielbauer and multi-instrumentalist April Dirks are at the heart of the group, bringing together guitar, banjo, mandolin, upright bass, and vocals to create their rich, handmade sound. Their latest release, "Sinner & Saints," continues to showcase their blend of rootsy storytelling and musical craftsmanship, offering both longtime fans and new listeners a fresh taste of their Americana style.

Opening with Matches & Gasoline, Tom Spielbauer on lead vocal and guitar joins with April Dirks on bass with high-energy instrumentation. Dirks also plays Mandolin injecting some hot runs and Tom overlays lead riffs over his own rhythm track. On Bessie Smith's Last Ride, Tom's deep raspy vocal is promoted by Heath Alan on bari sax and skillfully layering banjo, saxophone, and backing vocals.

Get Right Church combines lively gospel influences with soulful organ and piano by Tanner Taylor, rocking electric guitar tone and lead vocal by Tom, drums by Bryan Vanderpool and solid backing vocals by Tom, April, Monica Faye and Krista Guillaume. Guitar Zero is my favorite track on the release with it's driving guitar rhythm, and spoken vocal, with April on mandolin just jamming away.

Wrapping the release is Precious Lord with it's easy electric rhythm, Tom on lead vocal, April on bass, Bryan on drums and warm backing vocals by Monica and Krista and stellar B3 by Taylor. Solid closer.

Shirley Horn, who lived from 1934 to 2005, was an acclaimed American jazz singer and pianist celebrated for her smoky contralto voice and her masterful ability to perform exceptionally slow, intimate ballads while accompanying herself on the piano. Born and raised in Washington, D.C., she was a child prodigy who trained classically at Howard University before transitioning to jazz and forming her own trio at age twenty. She rose to national prominence in 1960 after legendary trumpeter Miles Davis discovered her debut album, Embers and Ashes, and adamantly insisted she open for him at New York’s Village Vanguard. Although she recorded with major producers like Quincy Jones, Horn famously chose to step back from heavy touring and industry pressures during the 1960s and 1970s to remain close to home and raise her daughter. She experienced a massive global career renaissance after signing with Verve Records in 1987, ultimately earning a Grammy Award in 1999 for her tribute album, I Remember Miles, and cementing her legacy as one of the ultimate musician's musicians of her generation.
