Government Focuses on Getting “Back to the Islands” in 2011

NASSAU, The Bahamas – Jan. 19, 2011 – Propelled by the most successful promotion in its history, arrivals in 2010 to The Islands Of The Bahamas jumped nearly 15 percent above 2009 figures, landing just north of five million total visitors – only the second time the islands-nation has achieved this milestone. Guided by data showing that air arrivals alone were up 4.1 percent in the first 10 months of the year – an increase of almost 45,000 visitors over 2009 – The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism & Aviation (BMOTA) was able to identify Saturday, Dec. 18, 2010, as the date on which it would welcome its 5 millionth visitor for the year. The Ministry of Tourism feted Grand Bahama Island visitor Randy Holmes of Vancouver, British Columbia, who received the honor and an all-expenses-paid opportunity to return to the Bahamas island of his choice.

In 2010, cruise arrivals grew by more than 18 percent and the ever-important stopover numbers have grown an estimated 5 percent, signaling that Americans are interested in traveling again and willing to spend on memorable experiences. Those record-breaking figures are attributed to the highly successful “Free Companion Airfare” offer, designed by the BMOTA and accounting for nearly 300,000 room nights sold. Other developments that attracted travelers include the reopening of the legendary Bimini Big Game Club, Pelican Bay Hotel’s new conference facility on Grand Bahama Island, and the opening of upscale Sandals Great Exuma.

The BMOTA digested the statistics with an outlook shaped somewhat by a look back:

“In stopovers, we still need to get back to 2008 numbers to begin to feel comfortable with our achievements. Given the level of unemployment in our largest markets in both the United States and Europe, 2011 will continue to be a challenge even though we expect continued growth in both cruise passengers and stopovers,” said Minister of Tourism, Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace.

Healthy arrival numbers are an important source of business opportunities for Bahamians, helping to attract large-scale investments such as the 1,000-acre Baha Mar resort complex scheduled to open in Nassau’s Cable Beach community in 2013. Development is the major theme for the BMOTA in 2011 as the destination celebrates the renaissance of Nassau/Paradise Island, including the revitalization of its downtown area; a new airport set to open in March 2011; new deep water harbor; new Straw Market and a public green space on the location of the current straw market site; the new Gateway Highway and a connecting road system with the replacement of tens of thousands of feet of new water, power and communications infrastructure underneath; and a new national stadium and associated sporting facilities.

With Nassau/Paradise Island well positioned to welcome millions of travelers in 2011, the BMOTA is focusing its efforts on the 15 other key islands of The Bahamas, including The Exuma Islands, The Abacos, Andros and Cat Island, often referred to as “The Out Islands” or “The Family Islands.” With a “Back to the Islands” – approach, the BMOTA is working closely with other government agencies in the commonwealth to focus on further increasing government services to attract more Bahamians and expand the available workforce on these islands. The BMOTA is also acquiring software and strengthening the transportation and electronic reservation infrastructure to allow international visitors to experience the many beachside vacation homes, villas and cottages on the various islands beyond Nassau.

Summing up long-term goals, Minister Vanderpool-Wallace explained, “These developments also expand the tourism offerings in the Bahamas in a way that has been long contemplated. Cruise lines have discovered the multiple destinations of The Bahamas and those different experiences are easily accessible by ship. Once we put the sea, air and electronic infrastructure in place, The Bahamas will also be accessible for multi-island vacations by land based visitors and more importantly become attractive to those long stay vacationers.”

NASSAU, The Bahamas, 20 January, 2011 – The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism & Aviation has announced that Copa Airlines will begin nonstop air service from Panama to Nassau as of June 15, 2011, with both departing and return flights scheduled for travellers every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. Copa Airlines has enlisted the aircraft Embraer E190 for the flights, carrying 94 passengers. The new flights will depart Panama City at 9:18AM, arriving in Nassau at 1:03PM and return flights will depart Nassau at 3:25PM, arriving in Panama City at 5:02PM.

The new service is expected to offer a President and Economy Class of service with some 84 seats offered in economy and 10 seats in the President Class Premium. The addition of the carrier to the region is expected to bring some 14,500 new visitors to The Bahamas in the first year and generate some 37,000 room nights that will boost hotel room revenues by just over $7 million in its first year. The potential spend in the economy overall from this service is estimated to be valued at just over $17 million.

“The new Copa Airlines service will attract more visitors from the Latin American region with immediate connections to and from The Bahamas. Expanding airlift with Copa, The Bahamas is aligned with a carrier offering the youngest and most modern fleet in the region. Direct linkage to their hubs provide leisure and business travellers from some 20 Latin American destinations direct access. This service will be a boost to not only our tourism sector but also our financial services and other business sectors," said Minister of Tourism, Hon. Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace.

Copa Airlines corporate executives made the announcement that passengers will now be able to have immediate connections to and from The Bahamas, points in Central and South America and Panama in a press conference earlier today. Addressing the public, Copa Airlines explained that not only does Nassau serve as one of the principal financial and business centers in the Caribbean, the island is also the hub of The Bahamas, providing direct access for travelers to visit and explore many of the destination’s 700 islands beyond Nassau and Paradise Island, including Eleuthera & Harbour Island, The Abaco Islands and Andros Island, among others, all offering world-class beaches. Visas are not required of Bahamians visiting Central and South America; or for residents of those regions bound for The Bahamas.

The Nassau/Paradise Island Promotion Board played a significant role in securing the new carrier, showcasing premium tourism product that provides great leisure appeal to visitors. Home to some of the world’s greatest resorts and hotels, including everything from the notable Atlantis on Paradise Island to the all-inclusive Sandals Emerald Bay on Great Exuma to the historic Graycliff Hotel, Restaurant & Cigar Company, The Bahamas holds great appeal for travelers as well as investors and developers. The destination’s involvement in global events such as The Miss Universe Pageant, to which Nassau/Paradise Island played host in 2009, is also key in generating interest from important markets such as Latin America.

The Ministry of Tourism & Aviation Director-General of Tourism David Johnson advised that they are working aggressively to increase airlift in key markets that they feel will be stimulated with new nonstop or convenient, one-stop direct service. The addition of the Copa Airlines service is evidence of progress in this regard, opening up for the first time ever The Bahamas to every major South and Central American market, including Mexico.

The addition of Copa Airlines and their extensive network is a positive beginning for the new and expanded Lynden Pindling International Airport, which has set a long-term goal of establishing Nassau as a major air hub for the Caribbean and access point to the Americas. Stage one of the new airport, construction of a new U.S. terminal and pier is set to be open to the public for previews on February 26, 2011 and expected to be fully operational by March 5, said Vernice Walkine, VP of Marketing and Communications at NAD, operators of Lynden Pindling International Airport.

NASSAU, The Bahamas – March 16, 2011 – Today, The Nassau Airport Development Company (NAD) in partnership the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism & Aviation is proud to announce the grand opening of the newly built U.S. Departures Terminal at Nassau’s Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA). The terminal represents the first of three stages in the $409.5 million airport redevelopment, arriving on time and under budget at $198.1 million – just 20 months after breaking ground in July 2009.

In a country where tourism generates 75 percent of the GDP, LPIA is the first tangible symbol of the Nassau Paradise Island of the future, described by the Hon. Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace, Minister of Tourism & Aviation for The Bahamas, as “the crown jewel and the most astonishing improvement program in our history.”

After indulging in water sports, cultural attractions and beachfront resorts, the new U.S. Departures Terminal will complete the Nassau Paradise Island travel experience with the following:

Efficient and architecturally engaging Check-In area

Food Court, including a Kafe Kalik® restaurant, Dunkin Donuts® and Quiznos®

Graycliff Lounge & Smoking Divan

Heineken® Lounge

Three al fresco dining areas

Eight retail stores and kiosks

Newsstands and book stores

“For far too long we ranked among the least efficient and least customer-friendly airports in our region,” said the RT Hon. Hubert Ingraham, Prime Minister of The Bahamas. “Today’s commissioning signals a definite change and a new direction.” Its aim, says the Prime Minister, is to “enhance the quality of life for Bahamians and residents and the visitor experience of guests to our country.”

Once complete, the $409.5 million invested will result in 585,000 square feet of terminal space, a 21 percent increase, as well as the ability to accommodate 50 percent more passengers. It will also include the addition of 34 gates, including one capable of handling an A380 aircraft. In all, this will provide Lynden Pindling International Airport with a capacity to serve more than 5 million passengers annually, necessary as The Bahamas welcomed a record number of visitors in 2010 and also prepares for the opening of the 1,000-acre Baha Mar resort and convention complex in 2014.

Next, LPIA will debut its new U.S./International Arrivals Terminal in fall 2012, followed by the construction of the International Departures Terminal and the 112,000-square-foot domestic arrivals and departures terminals by fall 2013.

The Bahamas continues to exceed visitor expectations in key performance areas

Arrivals to The Islands Of The Bahamas in 2010 soared past five million visitors – only the second time the islands-nation has achieved this milestone – and now exit surveys conducted by the Ministry of Tourism and Aviation reveal that visitors would recommend the destination to family and friends based on overall guest experience on Nassau and Paradise Island to The Abaco Islands, The Exuma Islands, Harbour Island and others.

The survey shows an increase in traveler’s satisfaction between 2005 and 2010 with hotels seeing a five percent jump. Last year, 29.8 percent of visitors who said they are very likely to recommend The Bahamas noted that the overall hotel experience exceeded their expectations, compared to 24.9 percent in 2005. The service guests received away from hotels also recorded a significant increase of almost 3 percent from the same group of visitors.

In 2005, 27.1 percent of the “very likely to recommend” group perceived service away from hotels as “better than expected.” Last year, the figure jumped to 30 percent. Other categories that registered percentage gains from respondents were cleanliness, food away from hotels and personal safety.

Minister of Tourism and Aviation, Sen. Hon. Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace said “This is clear evidence that training efforts in both the private and public sectors have had an effect. We have invested a great deal in perfecting methods that enable us to learn what matters in visitor satisfaction and what affects intent to recommend The Bahamas to friends and relatives.”

NASSAU, The Bahamas – August 5, 2011 – Sailors prized them. Pirates hated them. Today they are romantic symbols of adventure, travel and solitude. Lighthouses still stand watch throughout The Islands Of The Bahamas and The Bahamas Lighthouse Preservation Society safeguards three of the world’s few remaining kerosene-burning, hand-wound lighthouses.

Built in 1863, the famed Hope Town Lighthouse on Elbow Cay, Abaco still guides boats and ships today. Boating remains a way of life in The Abacos and throughout The Bahamas and the lighthouses are treasured even if modern captains navigate by satellite. The Dixon Hill lighthouse on San Salvador and Southwest Point lighthouse on Inagua have also escaped automation and still must be hand wound every two hours by keepers who have tended their flames since the mid-1830s. You can explore these lighthouses and their proud tradition via a video at VisittheBahamas.

There are still two dozen active lighthouses in The Bahamas and many others that have been decommissioned; there are even a few faux lighthouses. Several are easily accessible and can be explored by visitors in search of their own seafaring tale or just a bird’s eye view of the island.

Hog Island Light

Originally built in 1817 and situated on popular Paradise Island just off Nassau, New Providence, Hog Island is the oldest lighthouse in The Bahamas and is also the oldest surviving lighthouse in the West Indies.

Pinder’s Point Lighthouse

Overlooking bustling Freeport Harbor, this red-and-white candy-striped icon was restored, relit, and reactivated in 2009. Grand Bahama also has two often-photographed “faux” lighthouses—Lucaya and High Rock.

Hope Town Lighthouse

In operation since 1863, Abaco’s red-and-white striped lighthouse is still hand-wound and accessible by ferry from Marsh Harbour where it is surrounded by Bahamian style buildings.

Hole-in-the-Wall

Also on Abaco, this British-style lighthouse is painted white on the lower third and red on the upper two-thirds and is home to the work of the Bahamas Marine Mammal Research Organization.

San Salvador Lighthouse (Dixon Hill)

Established in the mid-1800s and built in 1887, Dixon Hill is a very popular Bahamas lighthouse facility to visit because it is still occupied and operated by lighthouse keepers who refuel the 400,000 candle powered lighthouse by hand every 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Andros Lighthouse

Built back in the early-1890s, this Andros landmark was made famous in the Blake Alphonso Higgs (known as Blind Blake) song, “Run Come See Jerusalem,” which told the story of a 1929 hurricane when more than 20 islanders drowned near the lighthouse.

Eleuthera Point

The long island of Eleuthera has several lighthouses and this early-1900s version is a classic. The island also has several other active lighthouses, including North Palmetto Point, which is available as a vacation rental.

Southwest Point

Great Inagua’s classic all-white lighthouse near Matthew Town is popular with visitors who want to see the hand-cranked light and visit with local lighthouse keepers.

Gun Cay

Bimini’s famed 1836 lighthouse is alive and well, thanks to continued restoration. The island also features the recently reactivated Great Isaac Light, site of a late-1960s mystery when two lighthouse keepers went missing—and were never found.

Great Stirrup Cay

Built in 1863 in the sparsely populated Berry Islands, this historic lighthouse has become a popular spot for cruise ship passengers.

NASSAU, The Bahamas – December 14, 2011 – Elaborate costumes, handcrafted out of crêpe paper in a rainbow of vibrant colors. Distinctively Bahamian music, comprised of rhythmic goombay drums, copper bells and mouth whistles. Prepare to see and hear it all at Junkanoo, the festive celebration which occurs on Boxing Day (December 26) and New Years Day in Nassau as well as on Grand Bahama, Eleuthera, Bimini and Abaco. The festivities kick off in the early hours of the morning and go on for hours.

The exact origin of Junkanoo has long been debated, but many variations of the story trace the origin to the short leave allowed to 18th century slaves at Christmas. These three days of freedom were celebrated with dancing, costume dress and visits to friends. This informal procession may be the roots of today’s Junkanoo Rush Out. Junkanoo has grown into a national celebration and serious competition among various crews including “Valley Boys,” “One Family,” “Fancy Dancers” and “Saxons.”

Junkanoo crews, arranged in large groups of up to 1,000, are organized around a particular theme and their costumes, dance and music reflect this theme. Each group member creates his her own costume and it may take up to a year to complete the intricate designs. Although the rules require that only one person carry each costume, some can weigh upwards of 40 pounds. The Junkanoo competition in Nassau, which populates Bay Street, is hotly contested and at the end of the procession, judges award cash prizes for the best music, best costume and best overall group presentation. It attracts an audience from all walks of life, from well-known celebrities to tourists and local Bahamians.

The Iconic Bahamian Straw Market is Back and Better than Ever

NASSAU, Bahamas – Dec. 20, 2011 – Visitors in Nassau can now explore Bahamian culture in the new $12 million Straw and Craft Market. Set to officially open its doors on Dec. 21, 2011 the new Bay Street establishment will house over 450 vendors, making it easy for visitors to bring pieces of authentic island crafts home.

Designed by Patrick Rahming & Associates the market contains two sections allowing for hundreds of vendors. The 37,000 square foot ground level space (4,500 square foot mezzanine) not only showcases straw vendors but accommodates 34 specialty booths designed to encourage experiences such as authentic Bahamian music, dance and fashion. Shoppers can also enjoy ATM access, public washrooms and wireless technology for the processing of credit card sales.

Straw work has been an important element of the Bahamian economy since 1720. Straw plaiting techniques, styles and materials vary from island to island, but the Nassau market allows visitors to see many styles in one place. Local artisans will offer everything from handmade hats, mats and bags, to woodcarving, baskets and even local guava jellies.

Due to the straw market fires in 1974 and 2001, extensive fire safety measures have been taken for vendors and tourists protection at the new venue including a sprinkler system with on-site water storage and fire hoses. There is also a full-service generator for use in case of emergency.
NASSAU, The Bahamas – Jan. 27, 2012 – Engaged couples considering options for their big day should add destination wedding to the top of their lists. According to a recent survey commissioned by the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism*, not only are most Americans likely to accept invitations to a destination wedding (78%), but they consider them a better value for their money than traditional wedding receptions (56%). This is good news for the betrothed who have always dreamed of saying “I do” in a tropical locale but feared that a wedding away might hinder the size or style of their nuptials.

The Islands Of The Bahamas offer an endless array of options for destination weddings. With 16 island destinations to choose from, there is something for every couple, whether they picture a celebration with friends on a spectacular beach, a gazebo overlooking the ocean, or a mix of traditional ceremony and tropical touches. Based on the survey results, other reasons why couples should consider a destination wedding in The Bahamas include:

Location, Location, Location: 45% of respondents prefer to attend a destination wedding in a tropical beach setting. With an abundance of breathtaking pink and white sand beaches, The Bahamas has that covered.

If You Invite Them, They Will Come: A common misperception is that guests will not travel far or spend the money to attend a destination wedding. On the contrary; more than half of respondents (53%) are willing to travel up to five hours to get there, while a quarter will spend $1,000 or more to attend. Just be sure to give them plenty of notice. 73% of those polled require between one and three months advance notice. No worries; guests can reach The Bahamas in as little as 30 minutes from South Florida and have any number of hotels and resorts to choose from to fit all budgets.

Picture Perfect: Not only will the setting make for beautiful wedding photos that will be cherished for a lifetime, but the guests will look better too. A quarter of Americans say they are more likely to go on a diet before attending a destination wedding than a traditional wedding.

Getting to Know You: Couples can relish the fact that all of their loved ones are in the same place at the same time… and are enjoying each other’s company. 68% of respondents say they are more inclined to be more outgoing and get to know other guests at a destination wedding.

Yes, it’s better in The Bahamas: Don’t forget to invite plenty of single friends. Nearly a quarter (21%) of respondents fess up to partying harder at a destination wedding and (coincidentally?) the same percentage say they are more likely to get friendly with a bridesmaid, groomsman or other guest than they are at a traditional wedding.
