On this page, I have tried to provide the details of various scholarships available in India. These fellowships in India and abroad may be offered at various levels of study like graduate level, postgraduate level, doctorate level or post doctorate level in various streams of study. Most of these doctoral fellowships, postdoctoral fellowships and other scholarships in India are meant for the needy and meritorious students so that financial constrains do not become a reason for discontinuing education.

But some of these scholarships are meant to encourage students to pursue research and some fellowships are meant to promote cultural interaction among students from different countries.

These fellowships in India may be provided by both the government and the private organizations. While most of the scholarships in India are meant for Indian students, some institutes also offer fellowships to foreign scholars.

Careers in aviation grow but sector faces slowdown

New Delhi: The Indian aviation sector may have hit an air pocket because of an industry slowdown and rising airfares, but a leading travel and tourism training institute says that this is temporary - the sector will boom, and jobs abound. The Kuoni Academy of Travel, the Mumbai-based training institute that is part of the Kuoni Travel Group, has tied up with the Britain-based Cabin Crew Direct and the Dubai-based International Airline and Business Academy (IABA) to train cabin crew aspirants. It is offering a four-month diploma course comprising 18 modules designed in association with leading international airlines to meet training standards across the world. "We have tried to ensure that our courses meet the highest standards of quality. The tie-up with Cabin Crew Direct and IABA underlines our commitment to provide Indian students with world class content which can help them with their careers," Kuoni Academy principal Smeeta Gulvady said. The International Air Transport Association (IATA), in its latest estimates, reckons India will be the driving force behind the world's civil aviation business that is globally expected to grow from $5.1 billion to $5.6 billion this year. The current market size of the international air traffic in India is nearly $5 billion (Rs 21,000). Industry insiders forecast that it is expected to grow phenomenally, creating a huge need for skilled manpower. "There is such a huge demand for cabin jobs and a vast number of such jobs are available, not necessarily in India at the moment due to temporary problems," John Ellis, chief executive officer of Cabin Crew Direct, said. "International airlines open a great career option, offering an opportunity for the cabin crew to visit different countries and continents that they could ever dream of," he added. Ellis also said that Indians perform better as cabin crew than many nationalities across the globe because they are highly educated. "They adapt well to training, they are very presentable, and India is the nation that speaks English best though it is not the country's first language," Ellis said. "The best types of applicants are those who are well-educated, very presentable and enthusiastic and have experience in customer service. Other criteria include height, weight, eyesight and, as most airlines demand, the ability to swim, " he said. "The average Indian applicant fulfills a lot of these criteria being a very hospitable, intelligent and friendly race. However, the ability to swim is not as high in India as compared to some other countries. And this is an area where the Kuoni academy will be helping the candidates," he further said. Overall, Ellis said, the quality of cabin crew from India is world class, as can be seen from international airlines who recruit from them in large numbers

English introduced as a subject in engineering colleges!!!

Sensing that poor communication skills in English might be holding back engineering students in Uttar Pradesh from getting good jobs, authorities have decided that the subject would be introduced in engineering colleges and institutes in the state, an official said on Monday. Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU) that governs over 230 technical institutes across the state will introduce the subject for engineering students, the official added. "At times, our students, especially those coming from rural areas, are unable to get good jobs owing to poor spoken English skills," said a senior UPTU teacher, preferring anonymity. "60 per cent of students are not able to get satisfactory jobs because of their poor interaction in English language," he added. In the last academic session, over 40,000 students were enrolled in the four-year B.Tech stream of engineering, officials said. According to UPTU officials, the varsity will not provide degrees to those students who score less than 30 percent marks in English. "To introduce English as a subject, we are consulting the varsity's executive council members," said V K Singh, examination controller of the varsity. The subject is likely to be introduced from this academic session. (IANS)

All India MCA Common Entrance Test (AIMCET)

All India MCA Common Entrance Test (AIMCET)

The All India MCA Common Entrance Test (AIMCET) is the entrance examination generally conducted by IIT's for admission to Master of Computer Applications (MCA) Program offered by IIT's and many leading Universities and Colleges.

The All India MCA Common Entrance Test (AIMCET) is a National Level Test being conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee on behalf of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. This test shall be for those institutions that are presently holding their own entrance test and admitting all their students or a certain percentage of them on all India basis. Students admitted on All India basis in the State level institutions shall be admitted only through the AIMCET. However, all the States shall continue to hold their own common entrance tests for admission to MCA programmes in institutions within their States as before. The objective of conducting the AIMCET on all India basis is to identify meritorious and motivated candidates through a single common entrance test for admission to Master of Computer Applications programmes being run by various institutions in the country. The admission is to be granted by the individual institutes as per policy applicable to them and the score of AIMCET.

1. Eligibility Criteria

Candidates with a Bachelor's degree of minimum 3 years duration in any discipline with Mathematics at the (10+2) school level or at the Bachelor's level are eligible. Those candidates who are appearing at the Bachelor's degree examination in 2004 and fulfil the aforementioned criteria are also eligible but they will have to furnish the proof of having passed the Bachelor's degree examination (provisional certificate will also be acceptable) at the time of admission to the respective institutes. Indian Nationals are only eligible to apply.

2. Schedule of Examination Test:

Test is scheduled to be held on June of the academic year

The test is proposed to be held at the following cities. Common Admission Test (CAT) Entrance Examination

Entrance Examination for admission to various IIMs.

The Common Admission Test (CAT) is jointly conducted by the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) - Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Indore, Kozhikode, Lucknow. Some of the most prestigious Indian Business Schools such as SP Jain, MICA, and T A Pai also take CAT score as an important criteria for their selection process.

Eligibility

Students who have completed their graduatation or who are going to complete their graduation the following year are eligible to apply and appear for the CAT Examination.

CAT Syllabus

The syllabus for the CAT Examination changes every year (or is tentative to change). Generally, questions from the following categories are frequently have appeared in the past: Verbal ability and reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Quantitative skills, Data Interpretation and Analytical and Logical reasoning.

Examination Dates

The CAT examination is generally conducted on the second Sunday of December. However, the previous Common Admission Test (CAT) was held on Sunday, November 20, 2005

Scholarships/Financial Assistance

It is the endeavour of all IIMs that no student be denied opportunity to pursue the Post-Graduate Programme in Management for want of adequate financial resources. Substantial need-based scholarships are available for students belonging to economically disadvantaged families. (Please see the write-up on each IIM in the CAT Bulletin for details.)

Reservations

As per Government of India requirement 15% and 7½% seats are reserved for SC and ST candidates, respectively. 3% seats are reserved for Persons with Disability (PWD). The three categories of disability are: a) low-vision/blindness, b) hearing impairment, and c) locomotor disability/cerebral palsy.

Generation information on selection process

The examinations were conducted in a very strict sense and have the reputation of being one of the best exam conduction and student selection system round the world. One IIM Director once said that he received letters from ministers and high authoritians but he categorically declined them all. This shows that even an IIM Director could not influence the selection process.

Be careful while selecting a college for Higher Education

It is every student’s dream to graduate out of the best college available. Many reach their goals while some, despite working hard, aren’t able to make it. Then the dejected students look out for other colleges. They consider every other college as just another run of the mill, out of which if they pass out, nobody is going to acknowledge them. This is a false belief. There are many colleges worth the respect and honor that IITs and IIMs get; you just have to widen your horizons. After all it is the students that make the college.

While selecting a college there are a few things that you have to be careful about. Before short listing a college, you need to make sure that it has the AICTE approved or the UGC grant in case of a university. If you graduate out of a non accredited institute you will not be considered for registration as a professional and you won’t qualify for any scholarship or education loan either. Lists of colleges and their curricula, including accreditation information, are available at school and public libraries.

Other important areas to look out for are the infrastructure, the faculty, living areas (if you plan to stay in the hostel), placement records and job assistance offered by the institute. Visit the college official website and get the required information. You can then confirm it from a student presently studying there or even from alumni. You could find where the alumni are currently placed. The best way to get the right information is the students of the college. They will guide you in the right way because once bitten, twice shy.

If possible you should go for a campus tour to the college. Nowadays, many colleges offer this facility (provided you register well before hand). When you personally visit the college it becomes easier for you to take the decision.

The decision should be made after careful investigation of all opportunities available, and consultation with persons familiar with the college. Catalogues outlining courses of study and entrance requirements should be requested from the colleges you are considering attending. Join a college only when you’re sure that it’s going to be the best for you and your career. Don’t lose out on good colleges just because of the heavy tuition fees. If you search well you will definitely bag a scholarship, and if that doesn’t work you always have the option of education loans. Remember that money may be an issue but quality education is important

Mumbai: Junior college admissions have gone online for the first time in Maharashtra, spelling relief to nearly half a million anxious students and their parents. The state government on Thursday created a special website, www.mumbaiapplication.com for the purpose, which nearly 500,000 students seeking admissions for the next academic year can use.

Initially, the online admission facility has been made available to all the 500-plus colleges affiliated to the University of Mumbai and students can apply from anywhere. Students seeking admission to first year junior college can register themselves online, select the college(s) of their choice, pay the application fees online, or through mobile phones and even make multiple applications.

However, the process of manual admissions will continue as before, the announcement added. Principal secretary, school education Sanjay Kumar said that 2008 has been declared the Year of Information Technology. "As part of that, the government wanted to take the gains of IT to the masses, since the largest single process of admissions is post-SSC, in the first year junior colleges, every year."

In Mumbai, students and parents face a harrowing time during admission season, carrying valuable documents on crowded local trains from one college to another, through monsoon rain - all within a very short time span.

The functioning of the new system was demonstrated to Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, deputy chief minister R R Patil, school education minister Vasant Purke, higher education minister Dilip Walse-Patil and minister of state Hassan Mushrif, according to an announcement in Mumbai on Thursday. Two new IITs launched, permanent campus awaited!!!

New Delhi/Ahmedabad/Kanpur: India on Saturday opened two new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) as part of plans to add eight such institutes, though both will have to wait for a permanent campus. While the IIT Rajasthan will initially function from the IIT Kanpur campus, the IIT Gandhinagar will function from the Government Engineering College in Chandkheda, near Ahmedabad. Since land is yet to be allotted for the new institute in Rajasthan, the human resource development ministry has asked IIT Kanpur to serve as its mentor institute for the time being. Addressing the first batch of IIT Rajasthan students in Kanpur, Minister of State for Higher Education D Purandeswari said, “The IITs have enjoyed the three basic freedoms of an educational institution - freedom to choose whom to teach, who will teach, and what to teach. The IITs also enjoy full cost budgetary support. The IITs remain successful so long as these amenities continue.”

The new institute is short of faculty and the recruitment process is on. Until this process is over, seven professors and five research assistants from IIT Bombay have been requisitioned for it. U A Yagnik, who teaches physics at IIT Bombay, has been appointed dean of student affairs and academic programme at the new institute. The first batch has 103 students from different parts of the country, studying in the mechanical, electrical and chemical engineering streams. In the next academic year B Tech. courses in civil and computer sciences would be included. The Gujarat government has spent Rs 7 million for upgrading the infrastructure of the engineering college to make it compatible to the IIT standards. The central government's site selection committee headed by Human Resource Development Ministry's Additional Secretary Ashok Thakur is expected to inspect the new site for the proposed permanent campus August 7. As many as eight new IITs are being set up in the country during the current academic session to impart high quality technical education. The new IITs are coming up in Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Orissa, Gujarat, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. (IANS)

GRE test training goes online in India!!!!!

Chennai: As many as 50,000 Indians take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) every year but many flounder - not because of lack of knowledge but because they are not used to taking computer based tests. Now, GRE training has gone online, enabling students to be better prepared.

The GRE is an online, timed test that qualifies a person to get admission to American universities and is considered a proficiency benchmark by several other countries and international institutions.

On Wednesday, Valued Epistemics Pvt. Ltd (VEPL) launched greedge.com, India's first online training for GRE aspirants.

"The online test was put on public domain after thorough research and development since 2005," says Anand Kannan, managing director of VEPL.

As many as 15,000 successful candidates have passed through its portals during its development process on its technology platform wizdom.in.

"The inherent advantage of an online platform is that students can learn at their own pace and convenience, making it truly an anywhere, anytime learning", he added.

The programme is supported by a feature called The Millisecond Technology, a software that captures information on how students answer questions, analyses the data and offers them feedback and recommendations to boost their score. This technology is pending patent.

"In an online test environment - where every millisecond counts for scoring, this technology plays a crucial role in helping students boost their scores," said Yogish Lavanis, director of students facilitation at VEPL.

Another key advantage of greedge.com is that the student counsellor understands the time available and the student's specific skills to customise a programme which both can adhere to easily. This mentoring facility is available in person as well as over the telephone.

Anyone who enrols in greedge.com is assigned a Student Facilitator and Analyst (SFA) who guides the student through the entire duration of the preparation for GRE.

"There are two aspects to the functioning of Millisecond Technology - data capturing and analysis. The most important difference is that it does the analysis in real-time," said Lavanis.

When students log on to greedge.com and start working on GRE model tests, the Millisecond Monitor, which is embedded on the page, records the way students select their answers. With the help of predictive analytics technology, the data is "sliced and diced".

The information the SFAs gather about the student's behaviour from this process is then crystallised into intelligent feedback on their strengths and weaknesses, helping them understand where they are losing time and help them in correcting it.

NRI/PIO scholarships common test to be held in October

New Delhi: A common entrance test will be held on October 26 in 40 countries to select overseas Indian students for the government's scholarships for pursuing undergraduate courses in India, the ministry of overseas Indian affairs (MOIA) announced on Tuesday.

The test will be held in 40 countries which have a large concentration of non-resident Indians (NRIs) or persons of Indian origin (PIOs), the MOIA said in a press release.

This is the first time the date of the test has been changed. So far, the test was usually held in April-May. But, as the academic year here starts in July-August, the ministry decided to give students enough time to make a decision regarding their educational career.

India offers 100 scholarships for undergraduate courses in sciences, humanities, engineering and commerce streams. The amount of scholarship is 75 percent of the institutional economic cost or $3,600, whichever is less.

Only candidates whose family income is not more than $2,250 per month are eligible for it.

The scholarship scheme was started in 2006 and targeted NRI/PIO children from developing countries with inadequate educational facilities, lesser opportunities for higher studies and countries where there is a significant concentration of the diaspora population. So far, 220 children have availed these scholarships

"She would never have been born if her parents had not wanted a daughter." This copy went along with a small photograph of Indira Gandhi as a young girl. It was one of the prize-winning entries nearly two decades ago in the Ashok Jain Awards for Public Awareness Advertising. It was also a direct attack on the growing practice of female foeticide in India, driven by the then-new medical technology called amniocentesis. This added to the already rampant practice of female infanticide in some parts of the country and led to a sharp fall in the sex ratio biased against females.

The 2001 Census shows that the sex ratio is continuing to drop at an alarming rate all over the country though the degree might differ from one state to another. According to some estimates made by Population First, a non-government organisation that works on population and health issues in India, approximately five million female foetuses will be aborted every year over the next five years. Child sex ratio statistics in the 0-6 group has been showing a continuous decline over the last four decades, growing sharper since 1981.

The current all-India sex ratio in the 0-6 group is 927:1000, which is a dangerous sign of a demographic catastrophe on a nation-wide scale. This fall, from 976:1000 in 1961, is alarming because the country is registering an upward growth in many other areas. This underscores that economic prosperity and education have no bearing on the sex ratio, or, in other words, the traditional preference of sons over daughters. It also points to the fact that modern medical technology is being used for purposes that are at complete odds with the stated goals of healthcare.

India's largest Information and Communication Technology Conference inaugurated

New Delhi: "The Central Government will launch a new scheme called 'National Mission in Education through ICT' to provide connectivity to the learners so that they can link themselves to the knowledge world in cyberspace and to make these learners 'Netizens' in order to enhance their self learning skills and develop their capabilities for online problem solving."

Stating this while inaugurating India's largest ICT conference, 'e-India 2008' at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi today, Union Minister of State for HRD (Higher Education), Mrs. D. Purandeswari said that the 'National Mission in Education through ICT' would also work for creation of knowledge modules with right contents to address the personalized needs of learners.

Emphasizing the importance of Information and Communication Technology in attaining the goal of a knowledge-based society, she said that in order to deliver the benefits of ICT-enabled learning, the National Mission would focus attention on achieving technological breakthrough by developing a very low-cost and low-power consuming access device, making available free bandwidth for education propose to every Indian.

Purandeswari said that the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development would like to build knowledge network between institutions of higher education and also within these institutions.

Mrs. D. Purandeswari further said that India's educational scene today is at a tipping point where opportunities abound and yet the challenges are also unprecedented.

This scenario calls for dovetailing efforts at the Information and Communication Technology level into efforts of providing quality higher education.

She said that, "We Indians are fortunate that our demographic profile is dominated by the youth, thereby providing an ideal opportunity for maximizing the benefits of ICT. Investing in education, particularly higher education, through ICT, also makes business sense for the corporate sector as this will give immense benefit in the long-run."

Giving an example, Purandeswari added that develop countries like the US, the UK and Australia have not only invested significantly in higher education but have also made this sector as one of their largest export earners.

Even the Asian economies such as Singapore and UAE have experienced the competitive advantage provided by a world-class higher education infrastructure.

In this context, Purandeswari said that an amount of Rs.85,000 crores has been provided for the expansion of higher education facilities during the 11th Five Year Plan.

"In the coming years the thrust will be on the use of Information and Communication Technology to strengthen the system in the mode of open and distance learning as well", she added.

Purandeswari also inaugurated an exhibition on e-Governance and Digital Learning.

The 3-day conference organized by the Centre for Science, Development and Media Studies (CSDMS), is spread over a number of sessions to be addressed by leading professionals and senior bureaucrats entrusted with the spread and implementation of e-Governance and e-Learning.

The highlight of the conference is that it will focus the importance of Information and Communication Technology not only in the fields of Governance and Education, but also in the realms of health, environment, rural development and agriculture.

Maharashtra to open 1,600 colleges to clear admission problems!!!

Mumbai: The Maharashtra Government has decided to open 1,600 new colleges all over the state this year to provide relief to thousands of students who have recently passed out of school but have not secured admission to junior colleges.

Education Minister Vasant Purke announced this while responding to a discussion on schools and higher technical education and the plight of students, initiated by the opposition parties in the state legislative assembly on Friday.

Assuring that "not a single student will remain without admission this year", Purke said that since the pass percentage of students in the state was higher this year than in 2007, more divisions and more colleges were needed.

He said that while the decision to start more divisions in existing colleges was already taken, the government will go ahead and start 1,600 new colleges from the current academic year. The government was committed to ensuring that each student who passed out of school this year gets a seat in a college of his or her choice.

The list of the new colleges with the number of seats, their locations and the courses offered would soon be announced and displayed on the state government website, he said.

MBA seems to be the most sought after post graduation option nowadays. So, if you are a doctor you must have contemplated this choice while thinking of MD or MS. How to Deal with Ragging ?

Although ragging is a punishable offense, we still see youngsters hanging themselves to the ceiling. A bully will always do what he is good at, but what is topping you from defending yourself? If not anything, you should atleast learn to defend yourself against any potential danger of any magnitude. The world will always suppress the weak, but you have the choice to be weak or well built.

One man with courage makes a majority. If you want to protect yourself you should first change the way you think. If you think you are too feeble you will always be dominated and bullied. You have to tell yourself that there is nothing more important then yourself respect. If you can’t defend yourself you lose all rights to be respectable. It is always better to jump in the battlefield and then die fighting rather then dieing without even trying.

It is true that no one makes you feel inferior without your consent. Nobody will rag you unless you allow them to. Don’t allow anybody to scare you, believe that you are mighty enough to scare them all. Once you let it happen to you, you will never have the courage to fight it. If you are unable to do it yourself you can always resort to help. If you are alone and nobody is in sight when you are being ragged raise an alarm and shout for help. You can be sure that you’ll be heard. A drowning man will clutch at a straw.

Most of the time, the ones ragging, are the ones who put up a strong face but are uncourageous, actually. Like we say, empty vessels make the most noise. Because ragging usually takes place when you are a fresher, being extra alert then can be of help. Learn a few basic self defense mechanisms. Keep things handy that can help you protect yourself like pepper spray or if needed, a Swiss knife.

Remember that facing your fears is the best way to fight them. Might is right!

Sky high cut-offs in Mumbai colleges leave students pondering

Mumbai: Even 90 percent did not seem enough for students aspiring for a junior college seat after the fifth cut-off list was declared here on Wednesday.

At some of Mumbai's well-known colleges, the difference between the first and fifth cut-off list was only one percentile.

Mumbai's most reputed college for Science stream, D.G. Ruparel College, lowered its cut-off by a mere one percentile in the fifth cut-off.

The cut-off for the first admission list at the college was 96.55 and for the fifth list it was 95.38 percentile, much to the disappointment of many aspirants.

St. Xavier's College too said the same story. The cut-off for Humanities stream dipped by just one percentile from 90 in the first list, to 89 in the second list.

The cut-off for the first merit list at H.R. College of Commerce and Economics was 91.59 percentile, which dipped to 89.8 in the fifth list.

The State Education Department has, however, said that it may consider a second round of admissions if seats remain vacant even after the first round.

Sheila Tiwari, Deputy Director of Education, Mumbai division said, "We have asked all colleges to prepare a list of vacant seats after admission procedures are completed on Thursday."
