New Ambisonic Audio Rig

After a considerable amount of study and investment, a new 3d Ambisonic audio rig has been installed at The Boardroom studio. It consists of eight single driver speakers arranged in a tilted cube. Two in front, two behind, two above, and two below, driven by an 8 channel amp and supplemented by an active sub bass unit on the floor. This allows the rig to be stereo, and dolby 5.1 compatible as well as ambisonic. New software and plugins have been obtained that are more favorable to the multi-channel mixing environment used. This has been a completely new learning curve, as everything is different from the equipment and software to the mixing style.

As a consequence mixing has begun on forth coming releases, and will feature free ambisonic surround mixes too. It is hoped a full ambisonic surround installation and performances will accompany this release.

It has all been quiet on the site for a while, sorry for the lack of updates.

This has been due to research into Ambisonic recording and reproduction. The intention being to make recordings available in Ambisonic B format, with corresponding Binaural, and conventional surround and stereo mixes also available. These recordings will be performed and played back on installations that can reproduce periphonic (full sphere) sound fields. The technology and methodology was invented by Michael Gerzon, and is from the seventies, but never really caught on due to lack of recording material, and the failure of Quadrophonic surround. Ambisonics has the possibility to better current surround sound formats in the representation of recorded, and virtual sound fields. It encodes height, depth and width information of a single point in space (the sweet spot) using only four channels. These channels can then be decoded into any number of speaker feeds from one (mono) to any future number. This makes it a really great space saving way to store uncompressed 3D sound field recordings, that can be converted to any number of outputs used in the future (Dolby 10.1 etc). This is taking quite a large investment in a completely new set up, requiring multiple identical speakers, amplification, plugins, and a suitable balanced room to mix in. New microphones are also being researched for the coincident technique that is used.

It all sounds a bit technical we know, but once worked out it won’t be. It is thought that the recordings and installations that come about as a result will be worth it, and future Boardroom releases will be available in this format.

“Your Sun” wears its influences proudly on its sleeve, and then some. It’s got the stamp of Derrick Carter all over it, from the lazy, nasal vocal snippets through to the percussive momentum that propels it along. The whole track winds its way through a wormhole of wobbly synths and elastic weirdness, giving the impression that one is listening to a Jew’s harp on crack.

Under the circumstances it’s probably not too surprising that Carter’s Classic co-founder Luke Solomon is drafted in to remix, and while his version out boompty’s the original, it lacks its flow. The dub redresses the balance somewhat, but goes deeper. Something similar in objective seems to be afoot with Inxec & Matt Tolfrey’s two contributions although they are very different conceptually. If anyone hasn’t coined the term “Mogadon filter” yet, then maybe it’s time to: These versions, particularly the “SPF100 Mix” are out there in terms of disco clarification. An interesting piece of work from one-time Andrew Weatherall co-producer Steven Boardman and unsung DJ hero Dave Congreve, which has its dancing shoes on from start to finish, even if the dance is occasionally abstract and surreal.
