I had some outdoor lighting that needed to be swapped out over the weekend and I don't know if other people have to deal with old bolts and screws as often as I do, but when me and the Makita get to work sometimes I like to chalk up the lessons learned.

This weekend's lesson? Bolts and screws can often become corroded and fused together. In some instances this can be reversed by using the following procedure:

1. Soak the fused bolts or screws with penetrating oil. You may need to do this several times over 48 hours.

2. Use a monkey wrench and spanner to gently remove the bolt.

3. If the screw and bolt do not move, you can use a nut splitter (as per the below picture) that will cut through the bolt.

Anyone else have handy outdoor tricks? I'm not just about piercing myself, knowing how to pierce my home's exterior also has its benefits!

How the Roles have Reversed

I’ve been watching “Nanny 911” since it first
aired. Nanny Deb is by far my favorite. She’s
compassionate, yet firm. She knows how to set limits with children
and how to effectively teach resistant parents to do the
same. “Supernanny,” on the other hand, has me a bit concerned.

I watched it for the first time this evening and was
appalled at the advice she offered the struggling parents. I had
heard from some friends about Supernanny’s “naughty seat”
technique. I watched these friends use it on their two year-old girl
when we visited them, and it made me uncomfortable. First, my
friends struggled with her to stay in the naughty seat. Second, a
naughty seat has the same connotation as a dunce cap. (Maybe instead of
the seat we should just make the kids wear a big scarlet "N" on their
chests.) Tonight, Supernanny replaced the naughty seat with the
“naughty corner.” Again, the television parents struggled to keep
their little girl in the corner – which is not surprising since this technique
practically invites a power struggle. And, what was this little girl’s
offense? She didn’t listen when told to go to her room for
nap. Is this really a punishableoffense??

When Tod-lar refuses to go to his room for nap, I give him a
choice: he either walks there on his own, or I pick him up and take him there
myself. He has until the count of “five” to choose. Nap is what
I consider a “non-negotiable.” Tod-lar knows this now,
too. He still verbally protests sometimes, but he walks to his room
on his own every time. He doesn’t need punishment. He just
needs to experience the natural consequences of his choices. And, the
first few times he protested, he experienced me taking him to his room.

After several minutes in the naughty corner, Supernanny then
forces these children to apologize for not listening or whatever
offense they committed. Toddlers – even preschoolers – do not understand
what “sorry” means. Forcing them to apologize teaches them they can
get away with doing whatever they want as long as it’s followed by a “sorry.” What
they don’t learn is the lesson that’s truly intended – empathy.

Last summer, when Tod-lar was only 12 months, I brought him
to a beach party. There was a two year-old boy there who, without
provocation, pushed Tod-lar. The kid’s father immediately jumped up
and forced him to apologize and kiss Tod-lar. As soon as the father
walked away, the kid pushed Tod-lar again. Father and son went through
the same sorry routine. After the third time, I moved Tod-lar as far away
as possible from that kid and his ineffective father, who was only teaching
that saying “sorry” wipes the slate clean. If Tod-lar and I hadn’t
moved, I would have pushed thefather.

It’s funny. You’d think Fox – the network that
brought us “Married With Children” – would be responsible for spouting this crappy
advice.

I’m sticking with Nanny Deb. Supernanny ain’t no
hero in my book.
