Richard originates from Portugal and lived for a period in South Africa. As far as I can tell his only weakness in life is good coffee, and he can often be seen in the local coffee shops of Ealing when he isn’t training his clients!

If you train with Richard you are likely to be pushed quite hard, but he does it with a smile on his face!

Here is what one of Richard’s clients says about him……..

“I started training with Richard on returning from cycling the coast of Britain. Although relatively fit from this, I have never been able to get any significant tone in my arms and stomach. Richard’s knowledge and commitment have enabled me to achieve results I never thought possible. His drive and motivation have pushed me every session to get the best out of my body with noticeable success. Since we began training together at the end of 2012, I have gone from a solid size 10 down to a size 8, losing fat and gaining muscle.‬

‪Training on my own worked up to a point but to achieve that extra something he’s been invaluable. My overall physique has slimmed down and with Richard’s expertise he’s helped me get rid of that hard to budge fat. Every session is focused but fun, and any trainer who can make me laugh while I’m on my third ‘super set’ and secretly wanting to quit, is worth his weight in gold.‬

‪Because of the dramatic affect on both my body and mind, I will continue to train with Richard, as he makes the sessions so manageable. He knows his stuff through and through and makes it his mission to get you the results you want, end of!”‬

Check out this short video clip of Richard training one of his clients outside our studio. Interesting, don’t you think……..??

Last week, Tony Welford, one of our top Trainers at Bodyline, was the subject of a client’s blog post. This week Tony gives us his top tips for strengthening your glutes and changing the shape of your bum!

Can you fire up the gluteus muscles without your hamstrings contracting………?

Lying face down, one thumb pressed into your bum cheek, two fingers pressed into your hamstrings, see if you can contract one without the other. This is a good a pre glute workout exercise to get your mind switching on to the glutes that you want to be activating.
I would also advise doing 2 sets of single leg body weight squats first.

Hypertrophy:

If you want to add size and better shape to the glutes you need to be thinking about hypertrophy sets, reps, rest times and tempo. Doing 100 body weight squats in the morning and 100 body weight squats in the evening is not going to give you that bum you want, sorry. It’s going to be much harder work than that. You are going to have to overload the muscle and aim for progression with the weights your lifting. Hypertrophy can be 4-5 sets of an 8-12 rep range, very close to failure with good form on each set. Each set should last approx 40-60 secs, with a 60-90 second rest between each set.

Also if you’re on a restrictive diet and not getting enough good quality proteins and calories, you’re going to be banging your head against a brick wall trying to build some muscle in the glutes.

Strength:

I would make sure you have been through a good strength training phase before a hypertrophy one. Otherwise you could be hitting plateau after plateau with your next training phases. Maybe a 5×5 routine for at least a 4-6 week block of under 6 reps, maybe creeping up to 8 reps in the last 2 weeks would be good.

Exercises:

Back Squats, but with feet slightly wider to activate more glutes and you MUST get your bum below your knees.

Glute Raises in bridge position with a bar across your hips, lower bum to floor raise up and contract. Shoulders are on a bench.

Sumo Squats with both feet raised up on steps, feet wide, toes pointing outwards. Hold a dumbbell in both hands between the legs and, again, bum must go at least below the knees for this to work fully.

Step Back Lunge off Step, carry dumbells in each hand and doing one leg at a time to create the right amount of tension in the glute ensuring the back knee bends below the level of the front foot.

Tony working with a client on their Sumo Squats

“So, I’ve just done my first month with my new PT and I wanted to share what I’ve been up to. PT isn’t new for me. I’ve had a trainer since I moved to London in 2010. But something feels different this time. I feel more ready to make some real changes. Firstly I know PT isn’t for everyone. It’s a significant financial commitment which not everyone can justify. I’m fortunate enough not to have any other commitments like kids and a house, so I can manage it.

Tony working with a client at Bodyline Fitness

Everyone’s reasons for having a trainer are different. It’s fair to say that since my early teens I have suffered some crippling self confidence issues and developed a damaging and entirely irrational relationship with food. Luckily this all started to subside when I hit my 30s and with the help of my amazing friends and mum I came out the other side pretty content.

For me, personal training is not just about exercise. Sure, you’ll never have a better workout than when someone is pushing you. And with a PT obviously comes the comfort that you’ll be doing the right training to meet your specific goals. These people are experts so it makes sense. For me personally though PT is therapy. I wonder if that sounds weird to you or if you can relate? Sod counselling and CBT. I have found all the therapy I need in the gym.

For someone with body issues, an hour a week in which you focus on what you can do rather than what you can’t do is amazing. To have that hour where it’s all about me and my body gives me the chance to spend the rest of my week focusing on other things. To have someone point out what your body is good at, for me, gradually undoes years of self loathing. I don’t know my PT that well yet but so far he has been kind, friendly, supportive, patient and genuinely interested in me and my goals. He doesn’t take any nonsense though and definitely will not let you off the last set with an eyelash flutter. I learned that the hard way…

So anyway. The facts.

My plan is basic. Ditch the hours of steady state cardio, of running round the streets all day and night doing my knees in and do this instead.

3 weights sessions a week

2 x 20 minute high intensity interval training sessions (sprintervals!)

And that’s it for the exercise. Although sometimes I bung in a 5k round the block when I feel like it.

Diet (and there’ll always be a diet element I’m afraid) is also very simple : 40% of total calories to come from protein and the rest an equal split between fat and carbs. I use My Fitness pal to track and it’s simple.

Also I’ve ditched refined sugar and bread but that’s just good sense.

So in a month what have I achieved?

The scales say pretty much the same thing but that’s cool because:

my jeans have got too big!

I feel stronger and firmer

I’m starting to get people asking if I’ve lost weight

I have more energy than I’ve ever had IN MY LIFE!!!

I no longer get that mid afternoon energy slump

my mood has become much more balanced

my skin looks better

I’m not hungry all the time despite eating far fewer calories than before.

I feel incredible physically

I feel incredible mentally

All that in my first month. I know this is hardly rocket science and if you’ve found this post from my Twitter, you’re probably doing most of this stuff already. But I’m very excited right now and I wanted to share what I have been up to.”

How does this compare to your experience of Personal Training? If you are thinking of getting a Personal Trainer has this post encouraged you to do so? Please feel free to leave any comments below.

The things I like about Jon are that he is always willing to get the coffees in and he is quite happy to get the cleaning spray out and dust down a few machines!

As we celebrate our 10th year in business in 2013, we give you………………..

“The Bodyline 10k Fun Run” on Sunday June 30th!

The idea, during our 10th anniversary year, is that the 10k is just a good, old fashioned fun run with no official timings, no stress and no pressure to perform on the day. It is more about just getting a group of clients together to do a 10k in the best time that each client can do.

The Run will be held in Walpole and Lammas Parks starting at 10am on Sunday 30th June, consisting of 3 laps of each park with a small “prize” for every runner and is completely free to enter.

Walpole Park, Ealing

There will be Bodyline Personal Trainers on hand to stay with all the runners from the first to last, so don’t worry about getting left behind, infact some of the Personal Trainers should be a bit nervous about their 10k times!

The race is only open to Bodyline clients and the spaces are limited so please book your place as early as possible via email or call Roy on 07921 777477

Once you have booked your place you will receive a training schedule (should you want one!) and you will, of course, get lots of support and advice from your Personal Trainer.

We will also be having a picnic in Walpole Park at the end of the run, which no-one is allowed to start until the last person comes in! There will be alcohol and unhealthy foods included in the picnic, so dont worry!

Some Bodyline Clients at Gunnersbury Park Run last year

So, book your place, get your training in and come along and enjoy a bit of exercise followed by a nice picnic afterwards!

Our theme on our Facebook Page at the moment is exercises you can do at home and we have been posting a couple of exercises each day. In this Video Blog we are putting some of those exercises together in one workout.

As you may know, we are celebrating our 10th year in business in 2013 and so we have called this routine “The Bodyline 10 Workout”:

The video shows you 10 exercises and each exercise is performed 10 times before moving on to the next one, and all the exercises are done with 10kg weights (they can, of course be lighter, or heavier!)

The Bodyline 10 Workout covers all the major muscle groups in 10-15 mins and you can repeat it as many times as you like of course.

So, take a quick look and let me know how you get on with it; I expect each of you to try it at least once!!

Looking forward to your comments and feedback………

Dina Slavensky

Dina is a Level 3 Advanced Personal Trainer and originally certified in 2005 as a Fitness Instructor through the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America. She enjoys working with those new to, or returning to exercise after long periods of inactivity, but also loves to find fun ways to challenge people wanting to take their fitness to the next level. She specialises in fat reduction and strengthening.

Recently Dina has had particular success with one client, Jo, and this is what Jo has to say about Dina:

”At the first consultation, Dina and I discussed my exercise history and established my goals during our time together. She also asked me to keep a food diary for a few days and gave me insightful feedback on it. Coming to Dina with a weak knee (torn meniscus) and dodgy shoulder (after-effects of frozen shoulder) I was hesitant as to how far we would be able to progress – how wrong I was!

Dina designed a programme of exercises specific to my needs and at each session she put me through my paces, increasing the intensity and number of repetitions. With her encouragement and motivation I kept surprising myself how much I could achieve! Thanks to Dina I discovered a love of the rower, which I had always avoided up till then. The sessions at Bodyline were fun and enjoyable and time just flew by. With each session I could see the progress I was making.

Dina also gave me regular advice on nutrition and my diet and spent time in my kitchen explaining the nutritional content of food stuffs and how to eat more healthily – what an eye opener! She also went the extra mile by keeping in touch with me in between our sessions with added suggestions for recipes and nutrition website addresses. She introduced me to the benefits of using the foam roller for stretching exercises, “my best friend”, as she called it and I’m getting used to it now!

I have benefited in many different ways from our sessions – my strength has improved all round, but especially in my knee and shoulder. My general fitness is better thanks to the cardio workouts and my weight has gone down due to my improved awareness of my nutrition. I appreciate and value her advice and support and warmly recommend her as personal trainer.”

You can find out a bit more about Dina by visiting her website http://www.justmovefitness.co.uk/ where, should you wish to, you can book a free consultation or simply email Dina with any health & fitness related questions you might have.

This week an old friend of mine from back home in Portsmouth was on Facebook bemoaning the fact that she was having yet another night of no sleep. She could think of no specific reason for this so I contacted her and emailed over some tips that have worked for people I know in the past.

This made me think that this could be a good topic for a short blog, so here are my top ten tips for a restful night’s sleep:

Stop any work or “taxing” stuff at least an hour before bed

In the last hour before bed relax by having a bath, watching TV, reading a book/magazine or whatever it is that chills you out

In bed, read a book or magazine that is quite light and allow your mind to slowly wander off into sleep

Lavender Oil: Put it in your “pre-bed” bath, sprinkle it on your pillow and burn it in a candle holder in your room for an hour before bed

Dont use a laptop an hour before bed

Dont have any electronic equipment in your bed room, switched off or otherwise

Make your bedroom a really lovely, quiet, spacious room; throw out any stuff that doesn’t belong in a bedroom. Give it a spring clean!

Dont have anything in your bedroom that isnt related to being relaxed and calm ie no business stuff like bank statements or bills etc just nice books magazines, flowers, photos of loved ones etc

Try a relaxation/meditation CD and play them in bed, you can use headphones so as not to disturb anybody

Drink Camomile tea or equivalent before bed, and obviously no stimulants like coffee, tea or alcohol

Some of these will be familiar to a lot of you, but maybe there are one or two points here that you hadn’t thought of.

So, do let me know if you have any good ideas that have worked for you, after all we all need a good night’s sleep! Get in touch in the comments box below or email info@bodylinestudios.co.uk

During the first few weeks of this new year it seems that most of our blog posts have been dealing with more holistic matters; so far this year we have looked at meditation, relaxation, well-being and life coaching. I regularly attend a networking group where one of our members, Jo Simons, is a qualified Hypnotherapist and Jo recently gave us all a very interesting talk about how Hypnotherapy can help us all in our daily lives.

Like a lot of people, I wasn’t really sure how Hypnotherapy works and was, perhaps, a little sceptical however Jo’s presentation really opened my eyes as to how helpful it can be in all aspects of life.

Take a quick peek at this very short video from Jo’s website and it will give you a really good insight on just how helpful hypnotherapy can be………..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=zofTSkY6xsw

As most of us know hypnotherapy can help with addictions, phobias, fertility issues etc, but the area that Jo concentrated on with us was “Goal Setting”. If you have a specific goal to achieve, personal or business related then you go through a very specific questionnaire (PACER Exercise) which helps you to establish exactly how you will achieve your goal, how you will feel when you have achieved it etc.

I applied the detailed questionnaire to one of my business goals and found the process really helpful in planning out how I will achieve that goal.

Our networking evening ended with a 10 minute relaxation “class” which just focussed on Jo talking us through some basic relaxation techniques whilst some very quiet music played in the background. In a one-to-one session Jo would speak about whatever specific issue was being dealt with.

The hour or so we spent going through our goal-setting and the 10 minute relaxation part at the end really enlightened me on hypnotherapy and, possibly, how effective it could be on the issues I see every day from my personal training clients.

If this blog has aroused some interest you can find out more directly from Jo’s website

I would love to get your feedback on this subject; have any of you used hypnotherapy at all and has it worked for you? Please let me know your thoughts in the comments section below.
