Managing your finances online with the help of Norton Internet Security is one of the biggest freedoms now. There are no more stamps to buy. No more bills and checks to mail. No more forgotten payments. But this new freedom that makes your life more convenient also makes cybercrime and identity theft more convenient. Gone are the days where identity thieves must sift through mail or steal from your mailbox. Now all they have to do is get you to open a web site, an email or download a file, and boom, they have all the information they need to drain your accounts and steal your identity. If you are doing financial management online for your budget, you should regularly monitor all of your accounts with the help of Norton Internet Security to ensure that cybercrime has not affected you.

In addition, you should always completely log out of your accounts and never let financial management web sites save your information, even if you’re using your home computer. The most important protection you can have is a comprehensive antivirus software like the new Norton Internet Security 2013, that can block cybercrime and identity thieves from latching onto your browser, your accounts and your passwords so you can manage your life and finances without worry. Norton Internet Security is a fantastic way to ensure that you are safe when you are surfing the internet. It is also a very cost effective way to keep safe when online too.

How many times have you found yourself coding again and again a pagination controls section for a project of yours?
Decide which is the page range that should be illustrated, center the current page within this range, include a jump menu, bind a click action to each button in order to actually do something and many more are aspects that we face again and again when building custom web pages including pagination logic.

tradpaginator plugin provides an easy and rapid way to append pagination buttons and controls letting you to state the parameters and taking care of all the rest.

tradpaginator illustrates the page buttons and controls and it lets you chain their functionality with the logic and structure of your application.

bootup.js is a JavaScript library that I found very useful when creating web applications. The library can help you reduce the load time of your pages by simply caching files to local storage and using them for offline use or just to improve the start-up time of you web app.

The library comes with two big options (files – an array of URLs to load, options: an object literal (this is optional)) and provides methods on both success and error. There is also a method that is called loaded which is fired when a specific file has finished loading. The full list of options and examples can be found here.

Back to our resource, today I have for you a responsive grid layout system that adapts beautifully to different screens (from desktop to mobile). It is fluid and floats perfectly regardless the width of the viewpoint.

The main difference from the old version of the responsive grid layout system is that now the items are using float and they are not positioning absolute anymore, thus making it compatible and scalable to any browser resolution.

As a college or even a high school student, you can jump-start your career advancement in the web development field by completing some formal Microsoft certification exams. The usual first step for formalizing your web development skills is taking the Software Development Fundamentals exam, which is the 98-361.

The next step would be to either complete the Windows Development Fundamentals (98-362) or the Web Development Fundamentals (98-363) exam. Either is a valid step toward documenting your skills as a budding web developer, and taking the 98-362 in addition to the 98-363 only serves to show you have broader skills that can be applied to other areas of the IT field as well.

With each of these Microsoft certification exams you earn a formal certification. Doing so makes you a more attractive candidate for internships and summer IT jobs, which will help you build your experience in the field even prior to graduation. The credentials you’ll earn are Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) certifications and by jump-starting your professional development activities, you also ensure that you’ll be a more attractive applicant for colleges or for full-time positions after graduation.

After Finishing your MTA Microsoft certification exams the next step in your professional credentialing process as a web developer would be the .NET Framework 4 exam (72-515), which will give you your first Microsoft certification in the technology specialist category for web development. With each Microsoft exam, you’ll need to commit to your studies to ensure you’re successful in taking the test. A good exam prep service like TestsLive.com is recommended.

HorizontalNav is a jQuery helper plugin that spans a horizontal navigation to fit the full width of its parent container. If you have the change to do this in a project, you know how hard and annoying is to make it and this plugin does the job very good. Works in IE7 also.

There are a couple of options you can set up like: responsive (true/false) – option will allow navigation to auto adjust when window is resized, responsiveDelay (100) – time to wait before re-adjusting the navigation, tableDisplay (true/false) – enabled modern browsers to use display:table, minimumItems (0) – minimum number of menu items required before auto adjusting.

Trevor Davis, a front-end developer has made a really cool and helpful plugin to make any content sticky on scroll that stops at a certain point (similar to the functionality that is on 9gag). The jQuery plugin can easily be added to your project supporting several options to get you started.

Options include the item you want to scroll, the parent container that you want the sticky content to placed, class added to the sticky item once it should start being sticky, class added to the sticky item once it has reached the end of the container and a couple more. Keep in mind that some small modifications to the CSS file are also required.

The plugin is free of charge and can be found on GitHub. A demo of the plugin can be found here.

Continuing with the PHP fundamentals, first we are going to talk about constants, what they are and what do they do. Basically, they represent memory zones referred by a name which initialized, it can’t change. In PHP, constants have the following characteristics.

They are created using “define” which gets 2 parameters. First is the name (must be string) and second is the constant value (can take any data type [we are going to talk later about them]).

Their name is case sensitive so be careful

They are available in all PHP files (they are global values)

The value of a constant can be only scalar (integer, float, boolean or string)

Some examples of constants can be found below.

<?php
define('course','PHP');
define('me','Bogdan');
define('age',27);

//to print them you can use "echo" but without the $.. examples below.
echo "My name is " .me; // My name is Bogdan
echo "My age is " .age; // My age is 27
?>

PHP data types

The data type a PHP variable has at a specific moment can be determined using two operations:

The last value assigned to the variable. For example, along the way a variable can change its type from string to boolean (if needed).

Last conversion applied. For example, a variable can change its type using the predefined function “settype()“

PHP data types can be divided in the following categories:

Scale data types – variables that can memorize only a single value

numeric values – int and float

true or false values – boolean

char strings – string

Composed data types

array – key -> values pairs where the key can be integer or string and the value can have any data type

object – an entity that has collections of data but also functions necessary to process them

Special data types

resource – data types for variables that store information that is not within PHP gained by using special functions

NULL – used to tell that a variable does not have a value

Ok, we know what types of data are in PHP, lets talk about them a little bit. First we start with bool or boolean data types which are used to store true or false values. The two values are case-sensitive and you need to be added without ” or ‘. Examples below.

<?php
$test = true;
$testFalse = FALSE;
$sum = (7>3) // $sum will become a boolean variable with the value true (or 1)
?>

The boolean true or false values are also used in more complex functions that return a true/false condition depending on the situation. For example

<?php
if($age > 100) {
     echo "invalid age";
     //returning false because is hard to find someone over 100 years.
} else {
     // return true
}
?>

int or integer data types are used to memorize numbers. There is a limit that int or integer can have and it is memorized in the PHP_INT_SIZE constant. If int/integer have values that are over the maximum limit of this data type, the variable will automatically transform to float. Lets see some examples.

<?php
$a = 4;
$b = -123232;
$c = 0x5a; // or $c = 90 - hexazecimal
$d = 067; // or $d = 55 - octal
?>

A hexazecimal number can be recognized by the “0x” in front and a octal number can be recognized by the “0″ in front.

float data type is used to memorize numbers with decimals. The number of bytes used to storage in memory is as int or integer, dependent of the platform. float data types examples are below.

<?php
$me1 = 5.14;
$me2 = 514E-2; // 514 x 10(-2)
$me3 = 0.232e3; // 0.232 x 10(2)
?>

string data type is usually used to stock in memory char strings. Many programs out there are construct from many strings and in PHP, a string data type variable can contain a series of binary data (can contain letters, numbers, etc).

We can use the string data type in many ways and we are going to talk about them a bit. The value that is entered between “” will always be considerate as string. Keep in mind that using “” in a string in a different way can cause problems (check the examples bellow for more details).

<?php
$s = "string me"; //correct form.
$s = "string me "a string" on me";
// the first set of " will be considered as final delimiter thus
// resulting in an error
?>

To be able to use quoted text into a string you need to escape them. The easiest way to do that is by using the \ char. See example bellow.

<?php
$s = "This is a string with \"escape\" function";
?>

The \ character has also other roles like when you want to add a new line in a series of strings you can use the “\n” (newline) snippet or use the “\t” for tab. “\” is also used to escape variables inside a string. Check example below.

<?php
$a = 10;
$s = "The value of \$a is $a";
echo $s; // The value of $a is 10
?>

We learned that a charset will automatically transform to string when we use the “” chars. But if we use the ” what happens? Well, almost the same thing. The charset inside the ” will transform into a string but the special variables inside the string will not be transformed anymore. Meaning, if we have $a inside a string that is ”, it will output $a and not the value of the $a variable.

When you have a string, you can access every bit of it. Lets say for example we have a variable $s = “test me”. Using $s[2] will return the letter “s” ($s[] is transforming our string into an array of elements. Every array starts with 0, thats why $[2] returns “s” and not “e”).

In some cases you might need to concat some string variables so it would output a phrase or something else. For example, if we have 2 variables: $a = “I am “; $b = “sleepy”; and we create another variable $c = $a.$b, then $c will become “I am sleepy”. Notice we have a space after “am” so the output of the concat string will be readable.

PHP data conversion

You can easily convert any variable from a type to another (as we mentioned before) but there are specific cases where you can get the integer from a string. For example…

<?php
$s = "3 flowers are in the left side";
var_dump((int)$a); // will return 3.
?>

So looking for a plugin related to responsive layout I ended up finding another plugin that seems very helpful and wanted to share with you guys. Freetile, the jQuery plugin allows you to easily organize your content in a efficient, dynamic and responsive way. The plugin can be enabled and applied on a container element making him arrange the children in a layout that makes optimal use of screen space packing them in a tight arrangement.

Lets see some features of the plugin. First of all, it allows for any size of elements to be packed without using a fixed size column grid. The plugin also provides a smart animation routine to distinguish elements and many more.

The project can be found on GitHub and a demo of the plugin can be found on the plugin’s webpage.
