The Portland Writing Center will be remaining open over the summer term in a remote capacity. Our writing consultants will be checking the PWC inbox (pwc@georgefox.edu) every morning, Monday through Friday, for any questions or papers that need to be reviewed. If you would like a person-to-person consultation, e-mail the consultants at pwc@georgefox.edu with some potential times, and we’ll respond to your needs as best as we are able.

The library staff wishes to thank the George Fox community for participating in the recent library service quality survey. Over the past few weeks, 887 students, faculty, staff, and administrators, or 22 percent of the university community, completed the survey. Many respondents also supplied written comments. Library faculty and staff will soon review the data plus all the suggestions and comments with great interest.

Technical glitch results in outdated e-nnouncement news

Due to a technical glitch, employees and students received outdated e-nnouncement and/or e-Colleague news on March 12. The mishap was a result of the system improperly categorizing 15 old e-nnouncements as new ones. The Office of Marketing and Communications apologizes for the inconvenience.

University celebrates inauguration of Robin Baker March 6-7

The inauguration of Robin Baker as the 12th president of George Fox University is this Thursday and Friday, March 6-7. This event marks a significant milestone in the life of the university and a tremendous opportunity for the entire community to come together in celebration. We hope that you will participate in the events of Robin’s inauguration, as they are designed for the entire George Fox family, particularly students and employees.

Schedule of Events
Thursday, March 6
1 p.m. - Student art exhibit opening reception
Roger and Mildred Minthorne Gallery & Donald H. Lindgren Gallery

4 p.m. - Installation ceremony
William and Mary Bauman Auditorium
Doors open at 3:30 p.m.

5:45 p.m. - Celebration dinner
Student Union Building; Ron Gregory Atrium in EHS; Stevens Center Atrium; Hoover Atrium

Each building will have the same menu, musical performances, and special inaugural activities. All students and employees are invited to attend. Employees may bring one guest with them to the dinner. (For additional guests, please contact University Relations at ext. 2131.)

Processional Information (for faculty)
All faculty, unless communicated with appropriate dean, will be processing in full academic regalia at the start of the installation ceremony at 4 p.m. on March 6. Faculty will gather in the Bauman Auditorium Greenroom starting at 3:30 p.m. and should be in regalia and ready to begin the processional at 3:45 p.m. The faculty processional will proceed down both center aisles. Faculty will be seated in the floor seats of the auditorium, not on stage. Mark Weinert will serve as faculty marshal.

Class Cancellations
All traditional undergraduate classes (including athletics) on the Newberg campus starting between 3:40 and 6 p.m. will be cancelled on Thursday, March 6, in order to allow students to attend and faculty to participate in the installation ceremony processional. Evening classes will resume at 7 p.m.

Changes to the class schedules for graduate and degree-completion classes in Newberg, Portland, and Salem are at the discretion of the individual departments. Faculty: please speak with your department head if you are uncertain of your situation and communicate appropriate class cancellations to your students.

Office Closures
All offices on the Newberg campus may choose to close at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 6, in order for employees to attend the installation ceremony and at 10:40 a.m. on Friday, March 7, in order for employees to attend the inaugural worship service. Offices should be open regular business hours during the rest of the inaugural schedule.

Apple Store on Bruindata offers discounted computer bundles

This is a good option for George Fox friends and family. The Computers Across the Curriculum laptop bundle that IT offers to students will include an additional discount.

Transition to Apple-only campus brings changes, new options

The Apple-only Computers Across the Curriculum transition is exciting considering the specs on the MacBook that will be given out (visit it.georgefox.edu/cac/2008.html). With this transition, many Apple changes are coming to the university.

Plans are formulating now for a big “Apple on campus” event in early April. But right now we want you to be aware of the iChat service available to anyone with a George Fox account and access to iChat on an Apple computer or a Jabber Client on a PC. 1098T Tuition Statements, for claiming educational tax credits, have been mailed to students who were charged tuition in 2007. The IRS requires that we mail forms to your permanent home address. We suggest that you ask your parents, or whoever resides at that address, to watch the mail for the 1098T. It will arrive addressed to you.

Feb. 1 is National Freedom Day

What holiday is celebrated on Feb. 1? It’s National Freedom Day. The purpose of this holiday is to promote good feelings, harmony, and equal opportunity among all citizens and to remember that the United States is a nation dedicated to the ideal of freedom.

Major Richard Robert Wright Sr., a former slave, fought to have a day when freedom for all Americans is celebrated. When Wright got his freedom, he went on to become a successful businessman and community leader in Philadelphia. He chose Feb. 1 as National Freedom Day because it was the day in 1865 that President Lincoln signed the 13th Amendment - the amendment to outlaw slavery - to the Constitution.

Wright gathered national and local leaders together to write a bill declaring Feb. 1 “National Freedom Day,” and President Harry Truman signed the bill in 1948 to make it official.

University seeks student projects for presentation at inaugural dinner

All George Fox University students (undergraduate and graduate), as well as alumni from the class of 2007, are invited to apply for the honor of presenting a project during the reception prior to the March 7 inaugural dinner for the university’s 12th president, Robin E. Baker, PhD.

Selected applicants will be invited to attend the inaugural banquet and will give casual presentations to attendees during the reception hour, answering questions and explaining their projects when people approach them.
