Last Tuesday morning I drove down to Mornington for a fish from my kayak. The weather was perfect for it and I managed to catch 4 small snapper and a 39cm barracouta. Below is the video from the session.

As mentioned in my previous post, I took the mountain bike out for a ride on Tuesday morning. This is the video.

I had yesterday morning off, but it was too windy (25-35km/h) to take the kayak out, so I decided to take the bike out instead.

The ride out was fantastic. Mostly downhill with the wind behind me. The ride back was hell! The wind had picked up and I was averaging 10-15km/h into it!

I have filmed about 20 minutes of helmet cam footage which I will edit and post here soon.

And finally…

I spent 9 hours brewing beer. I brewed 4 different beers totalling 80 litres of beer.
I spent 41½ hours fishing, lost 9 lures and caught 6 different types of fish including 16 blue swimmer crabs, 5 trout, 2 bream, 1 mullet, 1 eel and 1 eagle ray.

Yes, January has been a very quiet month when it comes to blog posts. Why? Because we have been moving house. Again. And we will have to do it all over again in June.

For those who don’t know, we sold our house last year. We always had a 5 year plan for the place – it was small with not much yard for the kids, but at the time the Mrs was pregnant so I was paying the mortgage alone. Now we both have full-time jobs, so we decided to upgrade a year earlier.

Originally we were going to build somewhere, but with the housing market crash in Australia, house prices dropped but building prices did not. Only a week after selling our old place, we found a new place, put in an offer and got the offer accepted. The catch – a loooong settlement; June to be exact. So, for the next 4½ months, we will be living with the in-laws (also known as the “out-laws”).

Since getting back from Fremantle early in January, we have been packing and moving small amounts of stuff in the car. The past 2 weeks have been manic, packing boxes, throwing away clutter and moving furniture. It all came to a head on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday morning! Three truckloads of stuff! (Small truck to be fair!) Moved!

There are some pros to living with the out-laws. Great food, ironed shirts, good wines, a pool, close to work. The cons? Long drive to the kids’ school, no aircon except in the TV room, the out-laws…

But the best part is… no home loan for the next 4½ months!!

It’s been 5 days since we arrived in Fremantle and today was our first day of relaxing.

We arrived last Thursday night and have been on the go ever since. Christmas Day was the biggest day followed by a Boxing Day picnic with the whole WA family. It was great to catch up with aunts, uncles and cousins from the other side if the family.

We also spent a day down south in Busselton and Bunbury. Busselton has the longest wooden pier in the world and it stretches 1.8km out into the sea. We walked to the end with the kids.

This morning started with an 8am trip to the beach with the kids, followed by a trip into Freo’s CBD where we discovered the 2011 Beer Venue of the Year – The Sail & Anchor.

The Sail & Anchor has 43 craft beers on tap and we tried 5 of them. The last one to pass my lips was the magnificent “Iron Brew”, a strong English ale measuring 7.5%ABV.

Tomorrow we are catching the ferry to Rottnest Island to discover the Quokkas!

I’ve finally got a new brew in the bottle – a Czech pilsner!

After 10 days in the fermenter, I finally bottled the beer and now it is bottle-conditioning in my brew fridge at 18°C. It should be ready in about 3 weeks, but I will be away on holiday in Perth so the beer will have to wait almost 5 weeks. Not such a bad thing – it will only get better!
