As your mortal coil pushes 40 it certainly gets harder to go up and downhill for four days straight. You’ll start giving up on the idea of partying until closing time. You’ll curse the dubious choices of headliners and how late some of your must-sees are playing. You’ll also curse how early some of your must-sees are playing because it’s 30+ every single day. You’ll decide you don’t have to watch every single show of the festival even if you should because you’re working. You’ll slap your head in disbelief when you notice your gel insoles are too worn out and it’s too late to order new ones, you’ll search for keywords like “metatarsal pads”, you’ll bring your own pillow and fan to your accommodation (yes, you last pitched a tent in 2007). You’ll still end up with a neck strain. And as soon as you leave you’ll start making plans to come back the next year because no matter the lineup, the amount of kids smoking cigarettes like this isn’t the year 2026, the diminishing amount of friends making the trip as they get even older than you, the weather, or the amount of dust in your lungs, there is no place like home.

Trying to reduce four days (actually, seven) of a festival with upwards of 70 shows to a top 10 is always a tough endeavour. Shoutout to several acts that didn’t quite make the cut below but deserve a mention: Terraplana, Kurt Vile, Horsegirl, Wet Leg, CMAT, Show Me the Body, Hetta, Patrick Watson, Aldous Harding, or Hermanos Gutiérrez (saying their 11pm slot was some unfortunate scheduling is an understatement). But here’s our top ten:

Greg Freeman

It’s hard to win over an audience in a country where your record sales are likely still in the two digits. It’s extra hard when way too many groups are meeting for the first time as they arrive on site (please go meet somewhere other than the first couple of rows, buddies), when there’s an eclipse happening, and, well, when you’re mostly playing new tracks. Turns out those new tracks are perfect. The Aussies at the barricade were wired.

Underworld

Underworld? More like what an underwhelming setlist, right? That was the only thing holding their set back from being near the top of our list, because the visual show alone was worth the trip, and so was (obviously) the song everyone was waiting for. The only headliner worth the label that was pasted on them.

Sérgio Godinho

A show that wasn’t billed as a headline set – especially with its 6pm slot – but was produced like one. A stellar, star-studded (Manuela Azevedo, Samuel Úria, Ana Lua Caiano, and more) celebration of one of the biggest names in 20th century Portuguese songwriting. While he’s still alive. Opening this space on the lineup to celebrate the living was one of the best ideas this festival’s team ever had. Even António José Seguro, the recently elected President of the Republic, showed up side-stage for a very deserved homage.

University

One thing I didn’t miss about the festival was having to wait until 4 am for a rock band to take to the stage. That’s DJ territory. Sorry. Was it worth it, though? Absolutely. University were a breath of fresh air after a couple of sets of dubious taste and substance. The trio from Crewe isn’t playing Xbox on stage anymore; instead, they brought some much needed fast-paced, no-nonsense, guitar-bass-drums mathy emo to moshpit-hungry kids.

Dame Area

In the last few years, the after-movie shown after the last show of the main stage would be accompanied by giant Vodafone-coloured bouncy balls being launched off the balcony of the press area. Then they’re passed around the festival grounds in a festive mood, until ultimately meeting their fate being loudly popped at the after-hours set. It didn’t happen this year, but it would have been fun to see that contrasting with the dark, industrial, martial beats of Dame Area, in a show that felt less like a celebration and more like the continuation of the dark atmosphere brought forward by Prostitute, who played the same stage earlier (read on below). Couldn’t complain as I was completely entranced and ready for a very late night sarrabulho.

5. Friko

Oh man, straight up indie rock can be so nice. If you were around at the time, it can make you feel like it’s 2005. But it’s 2026 and there are internet connected mobile phones everywhere, and it’s increasingly rare that a webzine writer will convince you that some weird-ass album by a troupe of seven unwashed French Canadians is worth listening to. Friko come from the south side of the border (and thankfully they look like they enjoy daily showers) but they’ll bring that feeling back for you. Sometimes they sound like a young Conor Oberst fronting mewithoutYou, sometimes they sound like nothing you’ve heard before. Sometimes they’re anthemic, sometimes they sound urgent, sometimes they go “screw it, here’s a stellar version of New Order’s “Ceremony”” and above all they’ll never leave you bored.

4. Westside Cowboy

It’s never easy to be the band opening the main stage of a festival. It’s hot and attention levels are at their worst. But this is Westside Cowboy, a band that’s pretty much ready to headline a festival in the next couple of years on the back of a hype that brought them from opening for the likes of Geese and Black Country, New Road to a major label record deal. There’s a bit of both these bands on their live show (including the sharing lead singing duties of the latter) but they never sound derivative. Their debut LP It Goes On was just released and it deserves your attention.

3. Carolina Durante

It’s also never easy to open the main stage of a festival in any other day, especially when the temperature hovers above 30. Clearly on the last leg of their Elige Tu Propia Aventura album cycle, Carolina Durante takes to the stage – an office themed stage – to the sound of the Office theme song. It’s not even 5pm yet, it’s scorching hot, half of the audience consists of Spaniards who were anything but napping, and the lads are flying through their discography at neck breaking pace (“Joderse la vida”, “Tomé café”, “Monstruo” – complete with the sticky note “monster” stage invader as seen here). Temazos a mansalva. How is it possible that they’re still leaving hits like “Cayetano” unplayed? How many absolute bangers do these guys have? They didn’t even need to go the extra mile, but the middle part of the show features invited trumpet, violin, viola, and cello players. They probably didn’t need to go the extra mile for a 5pm show in Portugal, but they did. Next time they’re around they will certainly be the biggest band in the peninsula, and they’ll be totally deserving of a prime time slot. We’ll be there.

2. Prostitute

Dear western left-leaning artists. We all know where your sympathies lie regarding any conflict between what you deem a “Western” country and a non-western country. You don’t need to parade flags of foreign countries around (never your own!) and constantly remind audiences that you support the side that you think is “correct” for that quick dopamine hit when you get feedback from the audience.

Now, Prostitute are a political band. Provocative, too. Their name and lyrical content probably disqualify them from playing a sizeable part of the world, including where some of their members have roots. They’re not trying to cater for the most anodyne person in the audience. Definitely not trying to be the next Coldplay. I mean, these folks from Michigan are playing some very noisy rock music here. But, like their vocalist says the first time he addresses the audience, “we’re here to dance”. Not to lead feel-good chants that “prove” you’re “one of the good guys”, I would add. They were there to play what was, by far, the best show of the last day of the festival. The bass is swinging, the guitar is either hypnotising us with Levantine melodies or piercing our ears with some This Heat circa Deceit shredding. The industrial synths they brought along aren’t quiet either. Given the fact that the Thundercat show at the main stage felt like watching paint dry (it was some nice paint, though!), it’s no wonder the crowd was going wild. If there was an artist worth buying a Saturday day ticket, that was Prostitute. Go see them.

1. Ryan Davis and the Roadhouse Band

Very on brand (and very telling about the festival’s young demographics) that my favourite show was also the worst attended one, at least from the ones I saw. Davis and his Roadhouse Band were sandwiched at dinner time between the two proper headliners of the day, attracting mostly the real heads. These Americana-laced indie rock songs are long and winding (the only track on their catalog that’s under 4 minutes is a reprise of a longer song…), which often doesn’t sit well with a more, let’s say, “relaxed” festival-goer mindset. The Roadhouse Band ripped through a selection of tracks off Davis’ both post-State Champion records, without his pedalboard (thanks to American Airlines), but with the mighty and underrated Styrofoam Winos on board. “Do you think M.I.A. also has to tune in between songs?”, asks Davis at some point. I would have rather tuned into a Winos makeshift show backstage instead of whatever was going on at the main stage later that evening: certainly one of the worst shows I’ve seen there.

Hell, even seeing Dionysus hitting the urinal (for the less initiated, this is a real song reference) is a better use of my time than seeing the likes of M.I.A. or Kneecap on stage again. More Winos, fewer gimmicks and train wrecks, would be my request for next year. Which will be my 20th anniversary on holy ground. If KLM – the formerly great Dutch airline that will cease to provide free sandwiches even though they charged me almost 600 euros for an Amsterdam – Porto trip – doesn’t let me down or something. See you between 18-21 August 2027.

For our 13th consecutive edition: it’s that time of year again! Vodafone Paredes de Coura 2026 takes place from August 12 to 15, at the usual spot: the Taboão river beach, right off the village of Paredes de Coura. Daily tickets (€60) and full festival passes (€130, plus fees) are still available, and unlikely to sell out; the festival pass includes access to the camping area. Good luck finding a flat at this time of the year, but there are options, even if outside the village. As always, we’re there early, since part of the charm of the festival is spending some quiet times at the Coura town centre. Or not so quiet if you’re there at night. There’s a whole slew of shows and DJ sets before the main part of the festival starts, Sobe à Vila. Plus a couple of unofficial all-nighters by friends of bolachas, hosted by local heroes MostraCoura at the legendary Xapas, who are also curating the Sunday Sobe à Vila shows.

Some quick notes about this year’s lineup. Everyone who’s ever read these pages knows we’re almost exclusively focused on the smaller print, on the artists that we cover on our website during the rest of the year. Since the last edition of the festival we had Kurt Vile, Aldous Harding, Maruja, Greg Freeman, and Ryan Davis “headlining” our weekly playlists. In that regard, this is another stacked lineup featuring some of our favourite artists of the past few years.

The downside of this year’s lineup is how underwhelming the headlining material is. Other than seeing Underworld tearing it up late at night on the main stage on Thursday night, prime time at the main stage is reserved for acts I’ll personally be quite happy to skip. As the festival director mentioned in a recently released interview, switching this year’s festival to an earlier week in August to avoid an overlap with big Western European festivals such as Lowlands or Green Man meant overlaps with Scandinavian mainstays such as Way Out West or Øyafestivalen instead. Scarce flights between the northwest of the Iberian peninsula and the Nordics posed additional logistical challenges, and instead of having fun with Geese we get to suffer through M.I.A. (in 2026!) and Kneecap sets. The poor sales of day tickets – contrasted with a higher percentage of full festival passes – reflect the lack of some proper big names that help sell tickets.

We’re not complaining, though. We’re just here to see our favourites battling the heat during their early sets at the main stage, gathering a few hundred devotees mid-evening at the second stage – this year named Coura Sem Paredes, a wordplay meaning «Coura Without Walls» which is probably also a nod to how locals really dislike whenever outsiders shorten their town’s name to “Paredes” instead of “Coura” – while the masses struggle to find a good spot to see the headliners, or at the after-party. There’s also a near-total (98-99%) solar eclipse to see at 7:30pm on Wednesday! As always, here are our classic printable timetables in xls and pdf formats. Hetta (Sun 9, 00:30, Sobe à Vila)

Before a single note plays on the festival grounds, Hetta do Montijo might make some locals complain about the kind of bands they’re booking on the freely accessible program right by their homes. That means they’re loud as hell, and the main reason why everyone should be at Coura as early as they can this year. The post-hardcore band has spent a few years perfecting their craft on basements all around the country (and outside, too – check out their Bandcamp Daily writeup from 3 years ago) and they’re now ripe for a bigger stage. We were lucky to see them light up Lovers and Lollypops’ garage around Christmas last year on their debut LP’s release party, and can’t wait to see them tear the village’s main street apart. Not literally, though. I love hanging out there for the rest of the week and I don’t want it to look like a war zone. Behave, kids.

Rufia Terno (Mon 10, 22:30, Xapas Lounge)

We barely started but it’s already time for a short detour. This is not part of the festival programme, but this vinyl only set is essential for anyone who calls themselves a music lover (like that Destroyer song) and is around Coura on Monday night. Alto Minho legend Amílcar Rodrigues has been to 20+ editions of the festival, a bunch of those as a journalist and as one of the jesters behind GPSS (the aura farming, eurodance-positive collective taking the stage the following night that I might or might not also be part of). Last year he pulled a legendary all-nighter at the smaller bar room of Xapas Lounge and this year he’s taking his decks to the bigger club room. Expect lost Brazilian bangers that you don’t want to pay Discogs prices to own a “VG” copy of, disco classics, and maybe the Smiths, I guess.

Westside Cowboy (Wed 12, 17:25, Vodafone)

This Manchester indie rock four-piece is on a list like this for the last time, since they’re already signed to Island off the strength of their two EPs, the confidently titled This Better Be Something Great and last January’s So Much Country ‘Till We Get There. Their debut album, It Goes On, lands the week after the festival. The first time I saw them was opening for Geese at Paradiso in Amsterdam a few months back. I’m sure the next time will be on a main stage somewhere. And I hope none of those crowds aren’t as chatty and obnoxious as the Geese one and let them play that quiet song (was it “Shells”?) in peace.

Greg Freeman (Wed 12, 18:25, Coura Sem Paredes)

After the success of last year’s excellent Burnover, high on our end-year list, Freeman left Burlington, Vermont (another of those random places in the US where there must be something in the water – I can’t wait for that new Lily Seabird LP) for the American Southwest. There, he recorded All Set the Bone, my most anticipated album of 2026. And all I’ve heard from it was “Indu”, a ridiculously catchy indie-country-rock tune that I’ve listened to about 30 times already (it will be closer to 40 by the time this gets published). His music mostly calls for comparisons to Jason Molina or MJ Lenderman, but if we’re to believe the press material for the album which namedrops Unwound, Fugazi, Mission of Burma, and The Drones, I’m calling it AOTY already. Don’t miss this.

Horsegirl (Wed 12, 20:15, Coura Sem Paredes)

The Chicago trio isn’t here to blow you away or anything. No one’s asking or expecting them to “save rock and roll” or whatever. Their Cate Le Bon-produced second album on Matador, Phonetics On and On, out last year, is another great Traditional Indie Rock album, and that’s why you should be there. Standing still, paying attention, hopefully in a spot devoid of chattering folks, maybe bobbing your head a little. I don’t know. I’m not going to tell you how to enjoy this. But if you’re a fan of anything good ranging from Wilco to Pavement, you will enjoy this.

Aldous Harding (Thu 13, 19:00, Vodafone)

Four years is a long gap even by Harding’s unhurried standards, but Train on the Island — out in May, once again with John Parish behind the desk — picks up close to where Warm Chris left off. Labeled as “best contemporary artist” not by some magazine but by one of the Bolachas staff who helps curate our playlists, the New Zealand singer-songwriter is probably too big to feature a list of “smaller artists you must see”, but we can’t help it. Each of her shows is a happening and we better show up.

Friko (Thu 13, 20:00, Coura Sem Paredes)

Oh, look, another Chicago-based indie rock band we all love around here! We were gutted that they had to cancel 2024’s edition fresh off their excellent debut Where We’ve Been, Where We Go From Here, so here they are again. That album was all shouted hooks and orchestral flourishes that sounded like it was released around Peak Indie Rock. Something Worth Waiting For, the kind of noisier follow-up, arrived this April via ATO to general acclaim, and although we wish we could have one set for each album, we’re fine with the best of. Provided they show up.

Kurt Vile & The Violators (Thu 13, 21:00, Vodafone)

Three features in a row, on what’s definitely the best couple of hours of the festival. Probably the most well-known artist of the bunch, but an essential mention anyway. Philadelphia’s Been Good to Me, his latest album, was just released a few weeks ago. It’s exactly what you expect ten albums into his discography. Nobody does the whole faux-slacker goofball thing like Kurt Vile, the nicest man on the lineup.

Bassvictim (Thu 13, 03:45, Coura Sem Paredes)

After a full week of shows at last June’s Primavera Sound (the Barcelona one), I had the great idea of going to one of the post-festival Sunday shows despite the fact that I was dying for a quiet night in bed that did not happen. It did not happen because I was a victim of the bass. Producer Ike Clateman was sitting behind the decks, cross-legged on the floor, and MC Maria Manow was everywhere. If you think I’m starting to describe the dreadful Crystal Castles, thankfully, I’m not. The beats can be abrasive, too, but they sound denser and less glitchy, and the vocal melodies are sometimes reminiscent of pre-tinfoil era M.I.A. (listen to “Alice” and the nod at Gigi D’Agostino). It’s going to be packed, though.

Carolina Durante (Fri 14, 16:55, Vodafone)

Gearing up to playing arenas in their native Spain, Carolina Durante are one of the country’s most successful indie rock bands of the past decade. There’s a language barrier preventing them from reaching stardom outside the country – although I can recall a diaspora-focused euro tour or two – but I’m sure the Galician contingent will arrive early and join forces with those who certainly had a great time at Primavera Porto last year. I have no idea what they’ve got in store for the next steps of their career, but if the next album is half as catchy as Elige Tu Propia Aventura and half as funny as their singles, I’ll keep ditching whatever famous anglo band is playing at Primavera Sound to go be the only foreigner in a 100 meter radius singing along to “Cayetano” (RIP Ciudadanos).

Ryan Davis & The Roadhouse Band (Fri 14, 19:55, Coura Sem Paredes)

Our most obvious pick for this year. New Threats from the Soul, the second LP from Davis’ post-State Champion career, was our favourite album of 2025. Having seen the Roadhouse band play three times last summer (two of them supporting, and sharing members with MJ Lenderman and the Wind), I can tell you they are as essential on stage as they are on your stereo. Davis is not a fan of comparisons to David Berman but it’s my job to let you know he’s the closest we’ve got to his lyrical genius. And how is it possible that after countless listens to both his “solo” albums I’m still discovering new details to be hooked on?

Cate Le Bon (Sat 15, 18:55, Vodafone)

Michelangelo Dying, her seventh album (with a guest spot from John Cale, no less), came out last September. Recently, the Welsh songwriter has spent most of her time producing other people’s records: we mentioned Horsegirl’s latest already, but she’s also been behind the desk for plenty of Coura alumni, including Kurt Vile and Wilco. On stage, I’ve seen her play all sorts of shows in all sorts of band configurations, and I never know what to expect; last show at Tremor festival wasn’t her most inspired, but I’m still intrigued on how this will be translated to the big stage.

Dame Area (Sat 15, 01:35, Coura Sem Paredes)

Taking one of the traditionally wilder sets in the entire festival – the big afterparty post-main stage grand finale – is Dame Area. The Catalan/Italian duo is one of the stalwarts of Humo International, one of the most exquisite European labels of the last few years (run out of Oviedo, Spain, and home of excellentm BCNR-ish .bd. or the uncategorizable Somos La Herencia). Silvia Konstance and Viktor Lux Crux have blown everyone away in such disparate festivals as Roadburn, CTM, or Dour; apparently, their industrial polyrhythms and freezing cold synth lines that aren’t often for everyone seem to be for a lot of different folks. Toda la Verdad Sobre Dame Area, released a couple of years ago, is the most fully-formed version of the idea so far.

Elsewhere, there’s a LOT more to be excited about. The “after hours” section of the first night is particularly interesting, with Bristol-based Viagra Boys-like weirdos (positive assessment) Getdown Services taking the stage right before their third LP is released later that week, followed by up and coming emo (the correct type) band University. These bands describe themselves on their Instagram bios as, respectively, “Britain’s Best Band” and “England’s most successful group”. Let them cook. Earlier on, Irish songwriter CMAT will play the first night time show of the fest (it’s 1/3 theatre, 1/3 stand-up, and 1/3 straight-up-bangers). Thursday is probably the most interesting day of the festival, and we could have flooded this preview with Thursday acts only; it features the most interesting prime time of the whole four days with back-to-back shows by Hermanos Gutiérrez (the only Ecuatorian-Swiss people you know, playing instrumental Latin music), the reunion of formerly extremely secretive art-rock band WU LYF, the proper rave of Underworld, and the abrasive Show Me the Body tearing the smaller stage down. The following day, Maruja will likely do the same at the same time slot, albeit perhaps in a slightly more conventional way. Earlier on, time for a celebration of legendary Portuguese singer-songwriter Sérgio Godinho at 80, complete with guests. And, before it all closes down late Saturday night, time for another noise rock demolition from American outsiders Prostitute. Before that, Hudson, the other Freeman, has the tough task of following another local favourite, piano extraordinaire Patrick Watson. On second thought, I’m pretty happy with the weaker headliners. My legs will love the added rest.
