When I read this article in the paper today, it reminds me of a meeting my hubby and I had with his niece. She was trying to get us to join into a scheme similar like this. The scheme sounded unbelievably easy, except that I'm a total paranoid when it comes to MLMs and such. Before we went to meet her, my hubby and I discussed and decided that it's not a good time for us to invest our money in such things, as we were expecting the birth of our first child, and basically, me being the pessimist.

So, when we got to know of the scheme and the products involved, I just couldn't comprehend the benefit I would get for charging downlines a fee of RM2K++ to join it. To me, if I want to sell an honest. transparent business selling aromatherapic lamps, oils, etc, I could just do a business proposal, get a loan from the bank, rent a shoplot and run my business!! (By now you would know which I am referring to). Yes, it's hard work, but what isn't? Cheating money out of people's pocket, that is! It's just a marketing strategy when you try to approach your ex-schoolmate whom you haven't met in light years to come and do business with you. But for some, it is out of desperation trying to make the money works for you in a quick, simplest way you thought possible.

Some MLMs do have trustworthy products to go by... To know which, you can simply identify what products stand the test of time in the market without having to commercialise them in super/hypermarkets. I particularly like AVON, Tupperware (to name a few) that actually serve their clients well. Trusted brands need no promotion nor bulky capital. They have a proper marketing strategy, step-by-step guide to selling their products, AND they don't base the business on recruitments.

MLMs aside, affiliate marketing is a different marketing practise, which actually mushroomed in surge of the digital age, and still going strong. According to wikipedia, "The concept of revenue sharing—paying commission for referred business—predates affiliate marketing and the Internet. The translation of the revenue share principles to mainstream e-commerce happened almost four years after the origination of the World Wide Web in November 1994." Affiliate allows people to gain commission by ensuring hits, clicks and allowing promo in their blogs, webpages, and now their spaces (facebook, MySpace, etc) It's like getting paid for allowing a banner to be placed in your home la, basically. Comprendo? (Oh, at last I make good use of the Spanish lessons) At the moment I'm trying an affiliate program which have a 'main kutu' element to it, which I think could work really well if I have a specific, regularly-maintained blog. So if you have lotsa time at hand, go for it!

So, friends, be aware of what you're joining, as there are always fine prints that you need to look into. Business opportunities are vast, it's just a matter of finding our niche and knowing what we love to do the most. Taking a 10 mins time off in the midst of office tasks to write this is unacceptable. But I really need to pass the message.

1. Use of Threats and Punishment
Punishment is simply a bad and generally ineffective leadership tactic. The goal of punishment is to STOP undesired behaviors. It does nothing to encourage positive, productive behaviors in employees. People who are punished, or threatened with punishment, feel resentment and want to get back at the source of the punishment.
From the leader's perspective, punishment is ineffective because it turns you into a "police officer," constantly on guard to catch any and all offenders (punishment is only effective if it occurs immediately and consistently after each violation).
Threats can only be effective if a boss is willing to follow through with the threatened punishment ("do that again and I'll fire you"). If unwilling or unable to follow through, then it will be seen as an "empty" threat, and the leader will lose control.

2. Use of Fear Tactics
Leaders sometimes use fear to try to get followers to toe the line, or as a motivational strategy ("if production doesn't pick up around here, people are going to lose their jobs"). Similar to threats, this strategy can often backfire. Fear can cause stress, and in extremes, reductions in performance and efficiency.
A common use of fear occurs when leaders create an "us versus them" mentality. We have seen this used by political leaders when they create an atmosphere of fear from threats outside of the group or nation (e.g., fear of unnamed terrorists; statements like "they are out to get us"). Fear can cause groups and organizations to "hunker down" and go into a self-protective mode that can stifle creativity and innovation.

3. Self-Serving Use of Power
How often have we heard the phrase "power corrupts"? Actually, power only corrupts when it is used for self-serving ends. Often leaders become "intoxicated" by the increased power that their position gives them. Bad leaders let that power go to their heads and do things that are in their own best interests without considering the interests of the collective.
Corporate leaders who ensure that their salaries and bonuses are secure, while freezing employees' pay or using layoffs to decrease expenses are recent examples of the self-serving use of power.

4. Creating Factions: Ingroups vs. Outgroups
Although there is nothing wrong with creating "A team" of top performers, or favoring your best employees, there is a delicate balance between creating healthy internal competition and blatantly playing favorites. Bad leaders, however, reward ingroup members not because they are top performers, but because they show loyalty or "kiss up" to the leader.
Bad leaders cultivate their ingroups with favors, and that makes it difficult for outsiders to identify bad leaders, or for followers to dislodge the leader from the position of power. The ingroup followers defend the leader and work to keep him or her in power. Bad leaders often exist because their followers allow them to remain.

Kalu terbaca tajuk kat atas ni, of course akan teringat masa-masa closing di opis lama dahulu... Hujung tahun memang tak boleh duduk senang, panic attack melanda dan yang paling hampeh ialah aku dan staff sama-sama kena kejar supplier for the bills.

Tapi hujung tahun ni agak lengang. Lengang sebab kerja hampir selesai. Yang belum selesai kena carry forward lah. Masalahnya nak mendapatkan maklumat daripada agensi masa hujung tahun ni tak yah haraplah... Sebab semuanya dah pergi bercuti monsoon holiday! Lengang juga sebab bos ramai dah bercuti. Lengang juga sebab takde motivasi nak duduk sini lama-lama...

Agak-agaknya lah, bila aku akan dapat pindah balik ke Kuching??? Dua hari lepas dapatlah berita menggemparkan.. Akibat perasaan tamak haloba, habuannya kena soalsiasat SPRM lak... Tak berani cerita lebih nanti ada yang terasa... So adalah insan yang ikhlas meng'update' kekosongan di Kuching nun... Masalahnya nanti, nak kena 'cuci' segala 't**i', sampah yang dah dilakukan oleh jahanam sekalian tadi. Tak sanggup rasanya nak membersihkan kerja orang. Nak start dari awal?

Apa-apa pun, big boss sini memang dah siap bagitau dia tak akan release aku, berdasarkan komen2 membina ex-bosses yang memang kawan rapat dia dulu.. Tapi, tak bolehkah pertimbangkan masalah aku yang berada di perantauan serta berjauhan dengan suami, dan anak yang masih kecil???

Kepala hotak dah pening memikir semua ni... Kira bernasib baik sebab tak kena penyakit tekanan darah tinggi. Sebab aku ni memang tekanan darah rendah.. Pening memikir belanja bulanan yang asyik habis digunakan untuk beli tiket terbang balik Kuching.. Pening memikirkan yang aku kehilangan a large part of my daughter's life. Her growing up years.

Apa yang aku tak buat? Segala macam kabel dah guna. Dengan broadband segala. Kabel paling atas memang on sentiasa.

Apa lagi yang aku tak buat? Hantar surat emel sana sini. Merayu pun dah tak kira masa dan ketika...

Apa yang patut aku buat lagi? Follow up, follow up, follow up.

Apa yang aku tak perlu buat?Menyalahkan takdir?

Senangla orang lain cakap dan tengok. Kena kat batang hidung sendiri, baru korang tau. Senangler nak cakap, "Ala, takpela tu.. Duduk sini kejap..." "Bawakla anak pi sini", "Suruhla suami cari kerja kat KL..."
Cuba pulak ko buat???

Aku dah penat sebenarnya. Kalau tak memikirkan anak, tak tahula apa yang aku akan buat. Aku dah buat segala yang lurus, ikut peraturan, masih tak nampak hasilnya. Orang yang buat jalan pintas, bengkang bengkok, tai chi master tu pulak cepat dapat.

My mornings have always started with a routine -- on the laptop, air my office room, get a nice, hot cup of Milo and start reading the online news. The favs would be The Star and Berita Harian. Occasionally I would glance at Malaysiakini, or Borneo Post, just to have some news at home... But today's headlines totally caught my attention and I cannot help but wonder if people are getting more selfish nowadays???

1st headline was the comment made by our PM on Cuepacs demand for a 2-month bonus in this very critical economic crisis. I quote "...it is morally wrong for Cuepacs to make such a request when the Government is making efforts to ride out of the global economic crisis..."

Being a govt servant myself, I am so glad that my allowance have not being cut. Instead the govt decided to extend the RM500 to grade 41-54, which I dare say is a very brave move. Although the govt has been known to allocate a large sum for its operating expenditure (which of course comes from the rakyat) maybe the rakyat has to realise, that's where the free services comes from. Even banks and telcos charge us to print our statements! Govt have been so frugal in it's spending, that even some have to work weekends without OT. Because the rakyat wants them to. Because the rakyat wants us govt servants to work our a** off like we are no humans but robots.

I have work in both private and govt, and it is obvious that govt nowadays are so much different from the 90s and before. Work piles up on your table, meetings have to be done in such a hurried way (we had to do it like Google.com).. Although there are certain level of govt servants that are not so busy, or have some attitude problems, the rest are simply overwhelmed with work.

Which is why I have to cut short my yakkings this morning.

To My Dear Friends, You Know Who You Are...

I was compelled to write today, to commemorate a friend's brave action. Being the rebel with a cause, she had the nerve to go against the SOP, and yet her actions, to me, were justified. I couldn't detail out what she did, else I would be breaching against the code of conduct as a government servant. But I fully supported her in whatever she's doing, because I believe what she did was right.

Maybe somebody up there shouldn't be so emotional and quit thinking about oneself. Instead think of the service as a whole and be responsible for every decision you make. Fear the God instead of the HUMAN acting like God. We humans are disposable anyway, and we will be remembered for what we did and said.

I could only pray that my dear friend will survive this cruel service with the guidance of a good boss and in the company of good friends. I hope now she knows that no matter much we want to trust people, it is best to trust the Creator...

I also pray for my dear friends who has been with me all the way, regardless of our posts or pay or background... For you gave me the strength to be what I am today...

Lunch With Mr Banjo!

Curiosity kills a cat. Not in my case today. My curiosity of the new cafetaria operator in B1 sure managed to drag my lazy bum out of the office. Went to have lunch there with my colleague, Derm, and both of us had Burger Banjo, or Banjo Burger, whatever you may want to call it. Since I already took down a heavy breakfast this morning, I agreed to have an egg burger instead.

Basically it's an egg burger, with mayo and slices of cucumber, cabbage and blackpepper sauce.

Quite nice, since I'm gulping it down with a tall glass of Milo Peng.

Oh, the cafe actually serves mixed rice, kuihs and soupy meal.... But again, I am full.. Maybe tomorrow. Rain check with Derm again...

And once we finished our meal, we stopped by the entrance to find an optical promotion. Wanting to try, but too lazy to wait for our turn...

Comel kan layout yang baru ni?? Got it from blogger templates site.. Alaa.. yang free itu.. Cuma sekarang kena reset balik all my links sebab ia akan automatik delete all the previous links.. I experimented with a few templates (as there are hundreds of them!!) And this one fits my title the best.. Actually it's not just the layout I'm revamping, I am actually thinking of a subject matter to fill up my future posts.. Hi everyone!!

It has been a long weekend... Full of activities, events and work waiting to be done. Didn't go back to see my darlings this weekend since my ex-schoolmate, Laura, and herFriend Helga, are having their hen nite @ bachelorette party. Practically I'm a 'mak-ayam' since I'm married, :D, luckily there's another friend in the same boat as I am... Was held at a serviced apartment in the heart of BB, all girls, 11 of us. Basically it's like having a western meal - the cold appetiser, then came the main dish and ends with the dessert. Wouldn't detail it out, still waiting for the pictures from a dear friend who's still jet-lagged in UK. Tunggu jak lah.

While we were busy partying, the midnite news came with a shocking piece on Yasmin Ahmad death. Sempat gak we all pray in silence for 1 minute before resuming our party. She was so talented, sensitive to her surroundings and her stories are so full of love and forgiveness; not forgetting her heartbreaking ad for Petronas all these years. There will be no more Sepet, Gubra, Mukhsin, Talentime... No more sweet Tan Hong Ming and his girlfriend... I will truly miss her tearjerking ad, and I think of her as the utmost champion of unity long before 1Malaysia. All my love, Yasmin, and may you rest in peace... Truly a legacy!

Luckily I am still sober the next day to drive Laura home. And grab some curry puffs from Ikea. And rearrange the furniture in my rented apartment. Alih punya alih, i teroverhaul the dining area. Lupak ambik gambar sebelum, gambar selepas pun boleh juak nak?

The gerberas were from Ikea, same as the vase and the placemat. I took off the owner’s alas and replaced it with a shawl instead. Haha! Semua green.. At least I have a comforting home to return to...

Next week will be back in Kuching to see this girl....

Lamanya dah tak update post kat sini... Past few weeks betul-betul mencengkam sebab kerja menimbun... I am never an expert in research papers whatsoever... So a bit difficult to adapt to new work environment.. I'm operational, and would have preferred spontaneity in work. Research is dragging my legs...

Today I finished keying-in all the data from ministries, although haven't receive all feedbacks. I'm short of staff, as in semua staff dah cabut ambik post kontrak kat ministry lain. PKS pay is ciput, compared to kontrak. So now dah x ada PKS, ha menangisla kawan... 800++ kementerian, dengan average 50 item per kementerian. Sakit oohh...

I haven't updated my blog not because I'm lazy. Simply because I have very limited time to think about any constructive post to put here. So take note ah my dear frens...

The past week was hectic since I need to finish up my work before I can go off to Penang for my ex-classmate's wedding. (Apparently she's my hubby's first cuzzie, so there's no excuse to skip it) Had a blast there, meeting up old friends (pictures in ma FB) and going for that gastronomy journey at Gurney Drive. Foodwise, berbaloi lah. My hubby and I had Penang Kuey Tiaw and Nasi Goreng Chicken Curry. Sedap hingga menjilat jari!!

Thereafter work chases me again. Setakat hari ini I have doubled my training days (zzan, I could never achieve this masa di SUPS). It has only been 3 months and I have attended countless workshops, seminars and FG meetings. The problem now is the Knowledge Management to ensure that all those intellectual asset doesn't decay. This is supposed to be my master degree proposal. The thing about the current public sector is that it has all the technology and expertise, but it lacks security, and most importantly, the intellectual asset management plan.

However, to start with, I think I better manage my own blog first. I am actually thinking to limit my entries to a few categories, which I often write on, instead of undecided rants, ramblings or tantrums. How about that?

Last weekend I was back home sweet home in Miri with my loved ones. Although the weather was somehow wet through the weekend, we had an enjoyable trip to the beach. And I regret that I missed out on Elly's antiques..

Currently @ Mines, munching on some free Dunkin Donuts leftovers with my sister. As for tonite, I'm actually blogging from my hp, since there's plenty of time before the movie starts. Decided to watch 'Knowing' starring Nicholas Cage. I'm definitely a fan of his movies. First time was in the Face-Off, I think. Rasa cam nak tengok Talentime jugak, but we'll see if I feel like it tomorrow. Lagipun esok nak gi tengok KLCC blackout for one hour. Apa-apa pun, I'll prepare a full report on Sunday. In the meantime, kita enjoy!!

I'm a human diplomat, I would always try to find a soft way to tell you how I felt, no matter how BAD or how DIFFICULT you are. Somehow, I think I am in this alone. Hari ini rasa-rasa cam nak speaking Malaya plak. After all, kita hendaklah memartabatkan Bahasa Melayu yang menjadi bahasa Kebangsaan negara kita.. Chewah.. Tergagap-gagap tu. Memandangkan sekarang ni tengah aktif menulis kertas kajian, kertas kerja dan sebagainya, maka Kamus DBP menjadi teman setia, thesaurus Oxford pula untuk menambahkan lagi bunga bahasa. (it's getting harder you know...) Dahla BM aku setakat A2, payah juga nak flashback zaman sekolah dulu...

Hari ini bos takde, kena menghadiri bengkel di Melaka. So, takde gangguan sangatlah dan kerja boleh diteruskan dengan lancar. Kena siapkan dua minit dalam masa tiga hari... Kalau minit dalaman takpe, ni minit yang nak kena edar ngan agensi-agensi lain.... Kat sini strict giler2 pasal minit ni!! Siap ada daftar minit dengan tempoh edaran gitu.. Sakit jiwa!!!

Hujung minggu ni pulak kena hadir kursus Business Process Reengineering di PD. Lama dah tak menjenguk PD ni... Kat Kementerian dulu memang takde tempat lain lah.. Asyik-asyik PD, sebab tak boleh pergi jauh2... Tapi duduk State best, pegi KK lah, Labuan lah.. Rasa2 nak pergi KK lagilah...

I've been in KL for some years before I returned to Kuching last time. I enjoyed working here, cuma masalahnya tak tahan berjauhan dengan family... I have to admit, I'm a family-woman. Hahah!

I'm going home (to Miri) today... Can't wait to see Elly and her Dad. She's started her swimming class with her auntie Pila, so hopefully I can bring her to the beach sometime soon..

Workwise ok plak. I'm lucky I have such considerate bosses, so far. Just that some red-tapes high above need to be re-colored to transparent.

Anyhow, I'm patiently waiting for my transfer letter... Harap-harap dapat balik ke Sarawak soon. Thank you Dato' N, Tan Sri B. Love ya all!

Slumdog Millionaire

Last weekend my bro and I went to watch this movie (have been waiting forever for it to be screened). It doesn't need a rocket scientist to figure out why it is the most amazing film to date. Most importantly, it reflects the ugly side of MUMBAI (despite the glamour and all), and the movie explore the activities that most people living in MUMBAI would want to deny. My heart pours for the kids, who had to fend for themselves in slums, dumpsites, and I sincerely feel that it does not only happen in India, but our part of the world as well...
I totally enjoyed the movie, and I think the kids are brilliant in their acting (if I need to compare with the heroine, Freida Pinto). She only appears after 1 hour plus into the movie! Dev Patel is definitely the guy to watch for, and I hope Danny Boyle will keep on making movies lkihe this. It's no wonder they won 8 Oscars, incl. Best Director, Best Picture, Best Original Song and Best Original Score, among others. Here I'll give you some background on the movie, taken from wikipedia (oh, I know some of you are just too lazy to wiki it).

A saturday is supposed to be d sleeping in day.. Ya know.. Waking up later than weekdays, spring-cleaning and such... but my department decided to have the launching of the sport's month today! My precious saturday is gone again, sadly. But did not fret though. Had fun with my bosses and subs. So it was a well-spent saturday morning, nevertheless. Elly had fun with her grandma. They went for an early breakfast, and in the evening attended the annual dinner. Wah, Elly doesn't misses mummy?

I was promoted and came to Putrajaya (again). Reported for duty last week but unfortunately caught the bug and have been coughing ever since. My hubby says I'm missing my baby, tu yang sakit tu...

It's a different environment and culture altogether. I was so used to routine chores that my hands itching for something to do. In the end, I ended up blogging (although I'm not suppose to do that here) but since somebody is reading, so kena fill up the blog-lah, right?

After a full three years of sabbatical break, I resume my post of an amateur blogger... No more a singleton, in fact I'm married and blessed with a beautiful girl, and plenty of pounds gained. Hehehe! Will start off with short postings, since the vocab is pretty much limited nowadays... But will post more pix of my dear family in the future...
