The Hardy Boys

2013-05-14T10:48:00.002+05:30

Meet Frank and Joe Hardy, the Hardy brothers. They are the sons of Fenton Hardy, a famous retired private detective in New York. Now, his sons are keen to follow his footsteps. They work together to tackle the most difficult cases, and always get the job done. They are assisted by their school-mates Chet Morton, Biff Hooper, and the like. Chet's love for food provides some comic relief in grave situations. Another peak of the series is the Boys' Aunt Gertrude, who despite her acid outward appearances, has a deep appreciation for the Hardys.

Here I'll be briefly reviewing the series, and then providing some download links.

Edward Stratemeyer, the creator

This series was created way back in 1927, and is still going strong, i.e. new books are still being released. This makes it one of the longest running book series in the world! This alone should be good enough reason to read these books. On top of that, there are a huge number of books in the series. As per my counting, there are a total of 420 Hardy Boys books across all series. This is huge! It would be a great challenge to try and read all those books. (Actually more challenging than you might think, because only a few of these books are available as eBooks...)

Now for the eBook links. Regrettably, only a very few e-books are available.

Books are in HTML format. Convert using DocsPal and/or CoolUtils. eBooks courtesy goanwap.com, which is, as far as I know, the only site having so many eBooks in this series. More eBooks are constantly being added, so the gaps in the table are gradually filled up.

The Original Series contains 190 books. Here is a list of the available books among them.

The original series ran from 1927 to 1979. In 1987 a new series was started, called the Hardy Boys Casefiles. This was a very controversial series, because it changed some of the key things in the series, which I will not discuss here. However, if you really like the original series, then you could try reading the Casefiles just to read more Hardy Boys books. Again, not all the eBooks are available. The books under the download HQ column are scans, and can not be read as text files.

These days, the current books in the series are the Undercover Brothers series, which actually stopped in Jan 2012. I can't seem to find these as eBooks, so just get them from your local library.

A video game entitled The Hardy Boys: The Hidden Theft was released for the Wii and PC. Download here and here respectively. Not played it myself. Check reviews before downloading.

All-in-all, the Hardy Boys Books are very memorable, and can make very interesting reads. For those of us outside the US, these books give an insight into contemporary American life. Also, the sheer volume of books available has made it a very popular series, lasting for almost a hundred years, and counting. The Hardy Boys have been placed in the same hall of fame that the mighty Sherlock Holmes occupies. I recommend these books to everybody.

Another surprising thing about the series is that though all books show the author's name as Franklin W Dixon, that is a collective pseudonym. The books have been written by a large number of authors using the name of Franklin W Dixon, which is a fake name. (This is kinda obvious since no single author could have been writing since 1927)

That's all for today, good bye!

This post was suggested by 'Hannah' who used the 'Request a Book' page on Book Shades to suggest the Hardy Boys. You too can suggest any books series for me to review and post download links, by using the Request a Book tab above.

Special thanks to goanwap.com for being such an excellent source of eBooks.

Artemis Fowl

2013-05-01T09:45:00.002+05:30

Twelve year old Artemis Fowl Jr. is the son of a rich Irish criminal warlord. He is also a child prodigy who is really one of the smartest persons in the world. But his life takes a turn when his father is kidnapped by the Russian Mafiya, who are jealous of his large share in Russian business. Artemis Jr. hatches a daring plan to rescue his father. He has heard stories of fairies and their Crock of Gold as a child, and browsing though the internet and the library, he found credible evidence for their existence. He decides to catch a fairy for himself.

Armed with his superhuman bodyguard, Butler, he visits Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, where there are rumours of a fairy. He finds a fairy, old with green coloured skin, in the basement of a house. He makes a deal with her and manages to get The Book of the People, the holy book of the fairies. But he decides that he wants a more important fairy for his next plan. He manages to capture another one, a female elf called Holly Short.

Eoin Colfer, the Author

Next the story reveals that the a huge population of fairies actually live underground, in large cities that they have built for themselves. They have a much more advanced technology than humans, masterminded by a smart centaur (yes, I said centaur!) called Foaly, who is the technological brains of the fairies.

Now back to the story. Artemis decides to hold the fairy he kidnapped for ransom from fer fairy friends. Artemis demands one metric tonne of gold. But at the last moment he decides against it and returns half of the gold. As the series develops, Artemis is seen as a friend of the People (fairies), and gradually stops all his criminal activities, helping the fairies to fight against evil.

The series is excellently written in a very simple language. Good humour is another important factor in making this series fun to read. Artemis' mastermind plans and daring escapes create a feeling of awe among the reader. The author has also created a wonderful and original new world filled with wonderful new creatures. Another must read. Don't miss it.

There are eight books in the series, which was completed only in 2012. Here are the download links. Convert using docspal to a format of your choice.

The Artemis Fowl Files is a companion book to the series. I features several side stories that are set in between the main stories. Get it here (login required, create one).

The first two books were released as graphic novels (comics). Not an ideal substitute for the main books, but good graphics. Grab 'em here:

The eBooks were also released for the Nintendo DS as part of the Flips eBook series. If you have a DS or use a DS emulator, you can download the ROM here. Load it using your emulator, or flash it to your DS using a Flashcart such as SuperCard.

That's all for this post. Hope you enjoy reading the eBooks. Do let me know your comments about my blog.

The Three Investigators

2013-04-26T22:25:00.000+05:30

'The Three Investigators' - sounds like a dull-and-boring little kids story with an unimaginative title, doesn't it? Well it isn't. It is one of the best series ever written. It was originally conceived as competition to the ever-popular Hardy Boys series, and boy did it outshine that! Now let me tell you about it, then you can download the free ebooks.

This series follows the adventures of Jupiter Jones ("Jupe"), Peter Crenshaw ("Pete") and Robert Andrews ("Bob"). They are a team of juvenile detectives in the fictional town of Rocky Beach in California, set to prove to the world that children can be as smart as adults, if not smarter, in solving the toughest of criminal cases. Jupe is the brains of the trio, and having once been a child actor, he still possesses a acting talent, and can talk his way out of any situation. Some people call him fat, though he prefers to be referred to as 'stocky'. Pete is the athlete, and is aptly suited to any fieldwork that their cases may call for. Though he has an understandable aversion to Jupe's usually daring plans, he is ready to support the Three Investigators in every way he can. Bob is more of a studious character. Having broken his leg when he was younger, he is not much of an athlete. He is the Records and Research man of the team; he performs research in the Town Library, where he has a part-time job. He also maintains records of the Investigators' cases for future reference.

Robert Arthur, the creator of the series

One of the main reasons this series is so enjoyable is because the leading characters have distinct personalities, which makes it easier to keep track of what's happening in a story and enjoy reading, rather than rack your brain trying to figure out which character is where. The plots are highly original, and involve fantastic themes such as whispering mummies, talking skulls, a walking scarecrow and a headless horse.

This series has actually been written by a large number of authors, each of whom gives his/her own distinct touch to the plot. An excellent site containing in-depth analysis of the series can be found here.

Now for the eBook downloads part... Since most of the books except 11 are out of print, it was pretty easy to compile the list of downloadable eBooks. Let me walk you through the different books in this excellent series.

The Original Series

The original series comprises of 43 books written by various authors including Robert Author (The creator of the series), William Arden, Mary V Carey, and Marc Brandel. This series the main one, and perhaps the most interesting. So here we go, the books are in HTML format. So just do a Ctrl + S and save the HTML to your computer. And then just convert it to a format of your choice using a combination of DocsPal and CoolUtils. Then again, you might choose to read it in html format itself. It's all up to you.

1. The Secret of Terror Castle

The Crime Busters Series

This is an series that was published from 1989 onwards portraying the Three Investigators as 17 years old. They now drive cars, use modern language, and are more grown up. I really don't like this series, because it spoils your whole idea of the Three Investigators. But don't let that stop you from seeing for yourselves.

1. Hot Wheels
2. Murder to Go
3. Rough Stuff
4. Funny Business
5. An Ear for Danger
6. Thriller Diller
7. Reel Trouble
8. Shoot the Works
9. Foul Play
10. Long Shot
11. Fatal Error

The Find Your Fate Series

Have you seen those new Give Yourself Goosebumps books where you have those choices that you've got to make at the bottom of every page, and you yourself are a character in the story? Well the Find Your Fate books are the exact same. In each book you are just, well, yourself, and you have to assist the three investigators to solve a case. It's quite fun, and it feels that you really are in the story. I myself have read only the first book in the series, as a hard copy. The eBooks are not available for obvious reasons. Imagine scrolling through a PDF file searching for a particular page... Well here's the list of books. Buy them on Amazon if you want to.

1. The Case of the Weeping Coffin

2. The Case of the Dancing Dinosaur

3. The Case of the House of Horrors

4. The Case of the Savage Statue

Radio Dramatization

The first two books in the series, i.e. The Stuttering Parrot and Terror Castle were converted into radio plays with sound effects and exact audio dramatization of the stories. The characters have very realistic accents, and the whole thing is excellently rendered. They are something every Three Investigators fan must listen to.
At the moment I can't find the site I originally downloaded it from. Since I don't think a radio recording can possibly have any copyright protection, I am sharing my own copy with you through Google Drive.

Click here to download an archive consisting of the two radio plays (The Secret of Terror Castle and the Mystery of the Stuttering Parrot). Press Ctrl + S on the Google Drive page that opens when you click on the link.

The Three Investigators Movies

Yep, you read that right! The Three Investigators have actually made it onto the silver screen! Popularity for the Three Investigators books got a major boost with the release of two full length movies, The Three Investigators and the Secret of Skeleton Island (2007) and The Three Investigators and the Secret of Terror Castle (2009). Both these movies are loosely based on the books of the same name, and when I say 'loosely' I am making an understatement. The director seems to have taken great liberties with the plot to make it seem more interesting for the general public. That said, the movie does bring out some of the highlights of the stories, and the personalities of the characters (Though Jupe is a bit too fat, if you ask me). Watch the movie with an open mind. Do not expect too much.

I will give you the links to download the whole movies via torrents. Use uTorrent to open the .Torrent files. Alternatively, you can watch the movies on YouTube, where they are in different parts.

1. The Three Investigators and the Secret of Skeleton Island (2007)

2. The Three Investigators and the Secret of Terror Castle (2009)

That's all for this post! I hope you too will become a Three Investigators fan like me. If you have any queries, complaints or suggestions feel free to post a comment below, or drop an e-mail to jayanth.rajakumar@gmail.com. I'll be back soon with more, have a great day!

The Pendragon Adventure

2013-04-21T19:49:00.001+05:30

14 year-old Bobby Pendragon is just an ordinary high school student who enjoys athletics. But suddenly, his life takes a strange turn that changes his life forever, and the world. His mysterious Uncle Press pays him a visit and tells him that the both of them are actually Travelers, an elite group of people who travel through space-time visiting distant and disconnected realms called "Territories". The series revolves around the amazing adventures of Bobby and his uncle, and their valiant efforts to save the world from an evil demon called Saint Dane.

DJ MacHale, the author

This is a series of 10 books by the author, DJ MacHale, and each book is better than the last. The language is quite simple to understand, and narrated in the first person by Bobby through a series of journals. The very funny way in which Bobby perceives the strange things happening around him and his witty one-liners are not to be missed. I enjoyed the last book the most, as it answers all the questions and suspense built up in the preceding nine books.

Out of 10, I would give this series and 8.5, because the plot does tend to get long and 'dragging-on' sometimes. But overall, an excellent read. Definitely recommended for those who have finished Harry Potter and are wondering what to read next.

Do not miss this series! To Download, just click on each title below (for file conversion, use docspal):

The Merchant Of Death
The Lost City Of Faar
The Never War
The Reality Bug
Black Water
The Rivers Of Zadaa
The Quillan Games
The Pilgrims Of Rayne
Raven Rise (Can't find the eBook again. Click here for the audiobook, or e-mail jayanth.rajakumar@gmail.com for help)
The Soldiers Of Halla

Download the eBooks immediately! Links are being taken down everyday by the anti-piracy people. So hurry, just download the eBooks before it is too late, even if you aren't going to read them right away.

Hope you liked this post. I'll be back very soon. Feel free to let me know your comments. Have a good day!

Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel

2012-09-09T18:15:00.000+05:30

The records show that Nicholas Flamel and his wife Perenelle died in 1418. But their tombs are empty...Over 700 years later, 15 year-old twins Sophie and Josh Newman discover a couple by the names of Nick and Perry Fleming living in the heart of San Francisco running a coffee shop and a book store. Could they be the same people?

Nicholas Flamel lives. But only because he has been making the elixir of life for centuries. The secret of eternal life is hidden within the book he protects—the Book of Abraham the Mage. It's the most powerful book that has ever existed. In the wrong hands, it will destroy the world. That's exactly what the evil Dr. John Dee plans to do when he steals it. Humankind won't know what's happening until it's too late. And if the prophecy is right, Sophie and Josh Newman are the only ones with the power to save the world as we know it. Click on "Read More" to read more.

Michael Scott, the author

Dr. Dee gets hold of the book, except for two vital pages which Josh manages to save. The series revolves around Dee's efforts to get the last two pages, and use it to bring back the ancient Gods called the Dark Elders, who now want to take over the world, and put an end to the human race.

This series has been written by the excellent Irish author Michael Scott and consists of six very excellent books. I would recommend this book to anyone who is into reading fantasy stories, and has just finished Harry Potter, wondering what to read next.

This time, it was terribly hard work hunting up links to these eBooks. It appears that the Copyright Law Enforcement people are quickly trying to rid the internet of all unauthorized files. So even these links may be gone at any time. So even if you don't have any intention of reading these books, PLEASE DOWNLOAD THEM RIGHT NOW, or you may never get a second chance. If an eBook is in an unknown format, convert it into a more useful format using an on-line file converter like fileconverter.

Unfortunately, 4shared.com now requires a login. It's free, so create one, and hope you won't be spammed. In another post, I will show you a cool way to create logins in websites without revealing your e-mail ID.

Enid Blyton

2011-05-16T10:48:00.046+05:30

Enid Blyton (11 August 1897 – 28 November 1968) has always been an all time favourite author with youngsters. Her books are for slightly younger children, so teens please excuse me. You'll probably find my next post much more to your liking, though.

She wrote hundreds of books for very small kids, but I prefer the books that are part of a series, and have more elaborate storylines. Click on the links in each sub-category to go to a different site to download the eBook. Please let me know about broken links or wrong eBooks.

The Adventure Series

Book Shades Rating : 7/10

This series features five children Jack, Lucy-Ann, Philip and Dinah. Jack's pet parrot, Kiki, provides wonderful humour, guaranteed to keep you laughing till the end of the story... The children, along with Kiki, have many hilarious adventures, and manage to escape in one piece.

Some of the books in the series have also been made into full length movies, and can be watched on YouTube (The River Of Adventure, The Mountain Of Adventure, The Circus Of Adventure, and The Castle Of Adventure) . The movies have been split into 30 segments, though.

The links each lead to a page with the eBook in HTML form. To download the eBook, click the links and press Ctrl+S to save the page, or do a right-click and Save Link As on the below links:

The Famous Five

Book Shades Rating : 5.5/10

Dick, Julian, George and Anne (and Timmy, of course!)

This famous series needs no introduction. This is a very long series, consisting of 21 books. This series follows the adventures of Georgina (a boyish girl, who prefers to call herself George), Anne, Dick, Julian and their dog, Timmy. The stories are set around an imaginary town called Kirrin. These stories, however, do not have much of an element of humour, but do not let me discourage you from finding out for yourself...

Most of the Famous Five books have been made into movies, which may be watched on YouTube (search the name of the book). Alternatively, you can also buy the movies as a pack, here or here.

Two series of Famous Five Adventure Game-books have also published, where you get to solve the mysteries yourself, by making the important decisions in the story. These, too are not available as eBooks, though you can buy them at Amazon for the same price as the Claude Voilier titles. Just search the book names on www.Amazon.com to buy them.

The first series of these, written by Stephen Thraves, featured stories loosely based on the original books. The gamebooks were titled as follows:

The Wreckers' Tower Game, based on Five Go Down to the Sea

The Haunted Railway Game, based on Five Go Off to Camp

The Whispering Island Game, based on Five Have a Mystery to Solve

The Sinister Lake Game, based on Five On a Hike Together

The Wailing Lighthouse Game, based on Five Go to Demon's Rocks

The Secret Airfield Game, based on Five Go to Billycock Hill

The Shuddering Mountain Game, based on Five Get into a Fix

The Missing Scientist Game, based on Five Have a Wonderful Time

The second series, written by Mary Danby, was entitled "The Famous Five and You". The books in this series were based on the first six original Famous Five books:

The Famous Five and You Search for Treasure!

The Famous Five and You Find Adventure!

The Famous Five and You Run Away!

The Famous Five and You Search for Smugglers!

The Famous Five and You Take Off!

The Famous Five and You Underground!

Over the years, a number of Famous Five short stories appeared in Enid Blyton's Magazine Annuals, Princess Gift Books and Comic, and a Weeties strip book. In 1999 a compilation book was published featuring all of the 8 short stories, called Five Have A Puzzling Time and Other Stories. See the Amazon link for buying the books below. I strongly suspect that this is available in eBook form, though I haven't found it yet. Watch this space for updates...
*Update 1*
I was right! Well, almost... This book is available for download as an audiobook. The link is untested, but many sites refer to it, so it's probably fine. I would appreciate anybody testing the links for me, though.

*Update 2*
Link tested! File size is 72 MB, and audio quality is very good. This is, in fact the original audiobook published by Hodder Children's Books, with reading in a flawless British accent.
*Update 3*
Unfortunately, the file has now been removed. Now you can listen to them for free on Youtube in five parts. Please follow these links:

In Enid Blyton's Adventure Magazine, seventeen of the 21 original Enid Blyton books were adapted into full colour comics. At present, four of these are available as comic-scan eBooks. The eBooks are in .cbz format, which actually an RAR archive file. After downloading the file, change the file extension from .cbz to .rar and extract it. The comic will be present as multiple scanned images. You may read them as it is, or print them to a common PDF. Click on the link to download.

*Update*
Unfortunately, all the below links are dead. I'm still trying to find other links.

Enid Blyton Five Go Down To Sea - Comics

Enid Blyton Five Go Off To Camp - Comics

Enid Blyton Five Get Into A Fix - Comics

Enid Blyton Five Have A Mystery To Solve - Comics

There are also 5 Famous Five games, that are not based on any of the books. I have tested NONE of the links below, and am not responsible for their quality. I would appreciate anybody testing the links for me. Having read a few reviews about the Famous Five games, I am convinced that the first game, Treasure Island, is not worth downloading, as it runs on DOS with mediocre graphics. the other games are published by a good publishing company (Ravensburger Interactive), and contain the latest graphics. An interesting to note is that the settings, including the houses, lighthouse, farm etc. are exactly the same in the games 2, 3, 4 and 5, and it is only the storyline that changes.
*Update*
The Rapishare Filestube link for Famous Five 3: Kidnapped has been tested, and it works fine.

Five On A Secret Mission Game

The Five Find-Outers and Dog

Book Shades Rating : 8.5/10

The Find-Outers Trail a Suspect

This is the series with the highest rating in this post, and by far the best Enid Blyton series.
This series follows the adventures of five young children : Pip, Bets, Larry, Daisy, and Frederick (Affectionately called Fatty, for reasons that become obvious as soon as you start reading the books), and Fatty's brilliant dog, Buster. They solve local mysteries in the fictitious little town of Peterswood, assisted by their friend, Inspector (later promoted to Superintendent) Jenkins, a "high-up" in the district police department. Mr. Goon, the bumbling local policeman, who has a serious grudge against Fatty because the children manage to solve cases much faster than him, and gain Superintendent Jenkins' trust and friendship.

The Find-Outers are assisted in later cases by Ern, Mr. Goon's nephew, who always manages to annoy his uncle by helping the Find-Outers instead of his uncle. The main highlights of this series are the amazing intelligence and detective skills of Fatty, which manage to astonish even his fellow Find-Outers! The silly antics of Mr. Goon and his vain efforts to thwart the Find-Outers are hilariously funny, and you'll be laughing till you drop.

In 1986, Stephen Thraves wrote four Solve-It-Yourself Mysteries featuring the Five Find-Outers and Dog, where you get to make the important decisions in the storyline, and try to solve the mystery yourself. I have not yet found these books in eBook form, though you can buy them at Amazon (The prices seem quite steep, but they might come down soon). See the links below for buying the Solve-It-Yourself Mysteries:

	1. The Five Find-Outers and the Shadowy Figure http://www.amazon.com/Find-outers-Shadowy-Figure-yourself-Mysteries/dp/0583308937
	2. The Five Find-Outers and the Faked Painting http://www.amazon.com/Five-Find-Outers-Faked-Painting/dp/B003Y8QN42/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1305476179&sr=1-1
	3. The Five Find-Outers and the Note from Nowhere http://www.amazon.com/Find-outers-Nowhere-Blyton-yourself-Mysteries/dp/0583308929/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1305476237&sr=1-1

Enid Blyton also wrote other books for children, like The Secret Seven, Malory Towers, 'R' Mystery Series, St. Clares' Series, and the Secret Series, and billions more, which would be quite readable for young children (Ages 7-10). To get these eBooks, go to the Enid Blyton eBooks list at GoanWap.com (The site is safe). Of these, the 'R' Mystery Series can be quite interesting even for children up to 12 years of age, and deserves a Book Shades Rating of 8/10.

I hope you enjoyed my first ever blog post. Be sure to type your comments below. I would certainly appreciate error corrections, and more eBook links related to Enid Blyton. My next post will probably be about eBook readers, and eBook software for PC, and you can expect it some time around mid-June.
