"Allegra Goodman's ... novel has so many appealing ingredients. Where, then, to start the list? Perhaps, as with food labels, it would be best to begin with the biggest: an irresistible story. Then add four strong characters: two sisters, and the two men who orbit them. Then there's the narrative voice: sweet but not cloyingly so, nourishing but not heavy, serving up zesty nuggets of truth. And the spicing is piquant but not too assertive, thanks to memorable appearances by (among others) a Bialystok rabbi, a bookshop called Yorick's, a collection of letters from a long-dead mother and a tribe of tree-huggers.

"The Cookbook Collector" might seem an old-fashioned concoction, with its obvious echoes of "Sense and Sensibility," Jane Austen's first published novel, which came out in 1811, its author listed simply as "A Lady." But although Austen's narrative forms the spine of Goodman's book — with two sisters of different emotional persuasions, wrong and right men, the seductiveness of real estate — this thoroughly modern story takes place at the brink of 9/11, in a world where old-school hackers have given way to a new generation of money-lusting geeks who draw venture capitalists like flies to honey."

This review, By Doris Mousdale, is our second review of Caleb's Crossing (see also the earlier BookTV.nz review by Carole Beu).

Geraldine Brooks takes a remarkable shard of history and brings it to vivid life. In 1665, a young man from Martha's Vineyard became the first Native American to graduate from Harvard College. Upon this slender factual scaffold, Brooks has created a luminous tale of love and faith, magic and adventure.

The narrator of Caleb's Crossing is Bethia Mayfield, growing up in the tiny settlement of Great Harbor amid a small band of pioneers and Puritans. Restless and curious, she yearns after an education that is closed to her by her sex. As often as she can, she slips away to explore the island's glistening beaches and observe its native Wampanoag inhabitants. At twelve, she encounters Caleb, the young son of a chieftain, and the two forge a tentative, secret friendship that draws each into the alien world of the other. Bethia's minister father tries to convert the Wampanoag, awakening the wrath of the island's strongest pawaaw, against whose ritual magic he must test his own beliefs.

One of his projects becomes the education of Caleb, and a year later, Caleb is in Cambridge, studying Latin and Greek among the colonial elite. Bethia, also in Cambridge at the behest of her imperious elder brother, finds herself enmeshed in Caleb's fate as he crosses between cultures.

Like Brooks's beloved narrator Anna in Year of Wonders, Bethia proves an emotionally irresistible guide to the wilds of Martha's Vineyard and the intimate spaces of the human heart. Evocative and utterly absorbing, Caleb's Crossing further establishes Brooks's place as one of our most acclaimed novelists.

What if the man you loved betrayed your brother?

Two thousand years ago, while a young Jewish preacher from Nazareth was gathering followers among the people of Galilee, his sister swept floors and dreamed of learning to read.

In Leslie Cannold's story, it is the women of Nazareth who take centre stage.

The rebellious, gifted Rachael, consigned by her sex to a life of drudgery.

Bindy, the crone who teaches her the skills of the healer.

Shona her sister, the victim of a harsh social code, and their mother Miriame, a woman seemingly unable to love.

When Rachael falls in love with her brother's dearest friend, the rebel Judah of Iscariot, it seems that at least one of the women of Nazareth may find happiness. Then a message comes from her brother in Jerusalem. And the events begin to unfold that will change not just Rachael's life, but the world—forever.

A controversial and timely book by BBC reporter and terrorism expert Peter Taylor In the course of a distinguished career spanning nearly 40 years, multi-award-winning BBC reporter and documentary-maker Peter Taylor has frequently come face-to-face with terrorists and their victims in his attempt to explain the actions of the individuals behind some of the world's most notorious terror attacks. As a green young journalist he was sent to Northern Ireland to report on 'Bloody Sunday' in 1972, and he devoted the next 30 years to investigating the Troubles, becoming one of the foremost experts on the subject.

In the decade following 9/11, he switched his focus to the far more deadly threat posed by Al Qaeda, breaking news stories about intelligence-gathering in the period up to the 7/7 bombings and the plot to blow up a series of passenger planes mid-Atlantic. What are terrorists really like? What motivates them? Should governments do the unthinkable and talk to them? How do the intelligence agencies elicit information from them? When does interrogation become torture?

In Talking to Terrorists, Taylor wrestles with these complex questions in a fascinating personal journey that has taken him from the Bogside in Northern Ireland to the notorious US prison camp at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. In the process he sheds much-needed light on a phenomenon that has become part of the fabric of all our lives.

Fifteen years ago, southern Afghanistan was in even greater chaos than it is now. The Russians, who had occupied the country throughout the 1980s, were long gone. The disparate ethnic and religious leaders who had united to eject the invaders -- the famous mujaheddin -- were at each others' throats. For the rural poor of Kandahar province, life was almost impossible. On 12 October 1994 a small group of religious students decided to take matters into their own hands. Led by an illiterate village mullah with one eye, some 200 of them surrounded and took Spin Boldak, a trucking stop on the border with Pakistan. From this short and unremarkable border skirmish, a legend was born. The students' numbers swelled as news of their triumph spread. The Taliban, as they now called themselves -- Taliban is the plural of talib, literally 'one who seeks knowledge' -- had a simple mission statement: the disarmament of the population, and the establishment of a theocracy based on Sharia law. They fought with a religious zeal that the warring mujaheddin could not match. By February 1995, this people's revolt had become a national movement; 18 months later Kabul fell, and the country was effectively theirs. James Fergusson's fascinating account of this extraordinary story will be required reading for anyone who wishes to understand the situation in Afghanistan, now and for the future...

"... An incredibly readable story of the city," says reviewer Doris Mousale of Arcadia Bookstore.

"... Montefiore takes the history of the old city from its beginnings as a fortified village through every conquest or occupation -- Canaanite, Israelite, Assyrian, Babylonian, Persian, Macedonian, Seleucid, Roman, Byzantine, Ummayad, Abassid, Fatimid, Seljuk, Crusader, Saracen, Tatar, Mamluk, Ottoman, British, Jordanian and finally Israeli. Rival places of worship were destroyed and new ones constructed with the stones of earlier buildings, thus making Jerusalem the most complicated archaeological site in the world. Populations were slaughtered or sold into slavery, then later replaced by new waves of immigration. Montefiore's book, packed with fascinating and often grisly detail, is a gripping account of war, betrayal, looting, rape, massacre, sadistic torture, fanaticism, feuds, persecution, corruption, hypocrisy and spirituality." -- Guardian UK.

The latest novel from the writer of the international bestseller The History of Love. From The Independent's review:
"Great House is more ambitious in scope than The History of Love. It straddles four cities -- Oxford, London, New York and Jerusalem -- with the intertwined stories split between past and present and its five narrators.

We first hear Nadia's voice, looking back at her life as a 24-year-old novelist, although now more than double the age of her younger self. The story of how she inherited the desk ("an enormous foreboding thing") from a Chilean poet, Daniel Varsky, reverberates throughout the novel. The year is 1972 and, although he intended to return to New York from Chile to reclaim his furniture, he is brutally murdered and becomes one of Pinochet's "disappeared".

Daniel's ghost haunts the novel just as Nadia's passionate but brief encounter with him haunts her life. When his supposed daughter reclaims the desk in 1999, Nadia goes to pieces. Such "black waters of unknowable depth" wash through the rest of the novel. Daniel reappears in the story of Lotte Berg, who arrived in England from Germany on a Kindertransport with 86 other children. She writes jagged and disturbing short fictions rather than Nadia's safer New York romans à clef. Lotte's life-story is told from the viewpoint of Arthur Bender, her long-suffering husband, who, with bitter irony, taught romantic poetry at Oxford. Both Lotte and Nadia are in thrall to their "instincts and vision", although only Nadia attempts to burst into life at the expense of her fiction.

Krauss is at her best when she reveals the intricate links between past trauma and the present lives of her characters. " The full review is at http://ind.pn/qwDBYC.

With this eagerly anticipated debut novel, a masterful follow-up to his internationally bestselling short fiction anthology, Legend of a Suicide, Vann takes up the mantle of Louise Erdrich, Marilyn Robinson, and Rick Moody, delivering a powerfully wrought, enthrallingly emotional narrative of struggle and isolation.

For a sassy young woman used to blagging, blogging and slogging her way through dreary London, the call of a glamorous, tax-free lifestyle in sunny Dubai just couldn′t go unanswered.

Over the course of two years, while an entire city rose from the dust Becky Wicks scaled a good few rungs of the hard-to-climb career ladder. She became a celebrity editor in a land where sex definitely does not sell and spent most nights in a five-star blur of champagne luxury. Dubai offered everything, but things soon got messy -- not least because a wealthy Arab man made Becky his mistress. These days, shamed rule-breakers and failed entrepreneurs are a dime a dozen in Dubai, yet the city retains its allure.

Becky Wicks lifts the burqa on the razzle-dazzle and reveals some of what goes on in the world′s fastest up-and-coming city and shopping Mecca. Based on her blog at http://beckywicks.wordpress.com/.

Synopsis

Rachel has always loved being at the centre of her large family. She has fiercely devoted herself to her three sons all their lives, and continues to do so even now they are all grown up. They are, of course, devoted to her -- she and Anthony, their father, hold the family together at their big, beautiful, ramshackle house near the wide, bird-haunted coast of Suffolk.

But when Luke, her youngest, gets married, Rachel finds that control is slipping away. Other people seem to be becoming more important to her children than she is, and she can no longer rely on her role as undisputed matriarch. A power struggle develops which can only end in unhappiness; her three daughters-in-law want to do things their own way, and so, to her grief, do her sons...

"Probably the most extraordinary novel I've ever read," says reviewer Carole Beu of The Women's Bookshop. Multiaward winner including the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and 2010 National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction.

Bennie is an aging former punk rocker and record executive. Sasha is the passionate, troubled young woman he employs. Here Jennifer Egan brilliantly reveals their pasts, along with the inner lives of a host of other characters whose paths intersect with theirs. With music pulsing on every page, A Visit from the Goon Squad is a startling, exhilarating novel of self-destruction and redemption.

The monster showed up just after midnight. As they do.

But it isn?t the monster Conor's been expecting. He's been expecting the one from his nightmare, the one he's had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments, the one with the darkness and the wind and the screaming...

The monster in his back garden, though, this monster is something different. Something ancient, something wild. And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor.

It wants the truth.

Costa Award winner Patrick Ness spins a tale from the final idea of much-loved Carnegie Medal winner Siobhan Dowd, whose premature death from cancer prevented her from writing it herself. Darkly mischievous and painfully funny, A Monster Calls is an extraordinarily moving novel of coming to terms with loss from two of our finest writers for young adults.

Multi-award winning ROOM by Emma Donoghue is the story of a five-year-old called Jack, who lives in a single room with his Ma and has never been outside. When he turns five, he starts to ask questions, and his mother reveals to him that there is a world outside. Told entirely in Jack's voice, ROOM is no horror story or tearjerker, but a celebration of resilience and the love between parent and child.

An international bestseller, ROOM has won the Commonwealth Fiction Prize (Canada & Carribbean Region), and been shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, the Orange Prize, the Kerry Group Irish Fiction Award, International Author of the Year (Galaxy National Book Awards) and the Governor General's Award. It won the Hughes & Hughes Irish Novel of the Year and the Rogers Writers' Trust Fiction Prize (for best Canadian novel). The NEW YORK TIMES named it as one of their five best fiction titles of 2010, and Salon gave it a Salon Book Award for Fiction.

The second collection of stories from Yiyun Li, author of the Guardian First Book Award-winning A Thousand Years of Good Prayers and The Vagrants, are a report from the frontline of a changing world. Set in China of the 21st century, where economic development has led to situations unknown to previous decades: residents in a shabby apartment building witnessing in awe the real estate boom; a local entrepreneur-turned-philanthropist sheltering women in trouble in her mansion; a group of retired women discovering fame late in their lives as private investigators specializing in extramarital affairs. Underneath the veneer of prosperity and opportunity, however, lie the struggles of characters trying to reorient themselves in the unfamiliar landscapes of modern China, their fates are affected as much by the historical moments in which they reside as by the choices they make.

About the Author
Napoleon Hill was born in 1883 in a one-room cabin on the Pound River in Wise County, Virginia. He began his writing career at age 13 as a "mountain reporter" for small town newspapers and went on to become America's most beloved motivational author. Hill passed away in November 1970 after a long and successful career writing, teaching, and lecturing about the principles of success. His work stands as a monument to individual achievement and is the cornerstone of modern motivation. His book, Think and Grow Rich, is the all time bestseller in the field. - Source: The Napoleon Hill Foundation, www.naphill.org

"A really funny story ... a good romp," according to BookTV.nz reviewer Doris Mousdale. Milo Burke, a development officer at a third-tier university, has "not been developing": after a run-in with a well-connected undergrad, he finds himself among the burgeoning class of the newly unemployed. Grasping after odd jobs to support his wife and child, Milo is offered one last chance by his former employer: he must reel in a potential donor—a major "ask"—who, mysteriously, has requested Milo's involvement. But it turns out that the ask is Milo's sinister college classmate Purdy Stuart. And the "give" won't come cheap. Probing many themes— or, perhaps, anxieties—including work, war, sex, class, child rearing, romantic comedies, Benjamin Franklin, cooking shows on death row, and the eroticization of chicken wire, "The Ask "is a burst of genius by a young American master who has already demonstrated that the truly provocative and important fictions are often the funniest ones.

A generational novel which opens memorably in a fur storage house in Los Angeles with its American protagonist as a boy trying on Marilyn Monroe's coat. When he grows up, Stephen goes to Oxford as a Rhodes scholar, and stays on to avoid the draft and Vietnam. He marries an Englishwoman, and they experience many of the things the baby boomer generation went through. Later the torch is passed to their children. In addition, Stephen's father Si makes a dramatic reappearance after Stephen's mother dies. This is a big, capacious novel, bursting with wonderful characters and ideas.

Deborah Cadbury tells the story of her own family history. For generations British chocolatemakers were in competition with the likes of Hershey and Mars. Cadbury were literally last man standing but now they too have been eaten by a bigger company Kraft, and the original ethics, eccentricities and vision of the Quaker family who began making chocolate nearly 200 years ago are fast disappearing. More than a biography of a business, the Chocolate Wars is an important piece of social history.

A fascinating, research-based look at the impact of social media on businesses and consumers around the world, and what's in store for the future.

Welcome to the world of Socialnomics—where consumers and the societies they create online have a profound influence on our economy and the businesses that operate within it. Online word of mouth and the powerful influence of peer groups have already made many traditional marketing strategies obsolete. Today's best businesses and marketers are learning to profitably navigate this new landscape.

Brands can now be strengthened or destroyed by the use of social media. Advertising is less effective at influencing consumers than are the opinions of their peers, making direct-to-consumer marketing messages less valuable each day. But savvy companies are using online networking sites as massive focus groups and as an efficient means of communication with consumers. If social media isn't a part of your business strategy, you've already fallen behind the curve—and your competition.

In Socialnomics, Erik Qualman offers a fascinating look at the impact of social media on business to reveal what the future holds and how businesses can best take advantage of it. He explores how social media is changing the way businesses produce, market, and sell products; how it eliminates inefficient marketing tactics and middlemen; and how businesses are connecting directly with their customers through popular social media platforms.

Social media will continue to change the way businesses market products and how consumers and businesses interact with each other. If you're a marketer or business owner, the big question is whether you'll keep up with those changes. Socialnomics is an essential resource for anyone who wants to understand the implications of social media, and how to tap its power to increase sales, cut marketing costs, and communicate directly with consumers.

A very popular book which hit the shelves just prior to Christmas much to the delight of followers of the very well-known Grey Lynn cafe. Now you can recreate their famous dishes at home. The book is part of any dinner party conversation just now and plenty of foodies are adding Ripe recipes to their repertoires and getting lots of accolades from family and friends.
A must for any cook book fancier and definitely a book you will cook from time and again.
