The group now has an illustration, which e_vra has been kind enough to let us use. It was taken in Thessaloniki (aka Salonica) in the Macedonian region of Greece in November.

As it turns out, this really isn't the best way to build a group, at least not at present. I tried it, and what happened was that the flow of photos into the group went down, and the rate at which new members joined dropped through the floor. This pattern repeated itself in a number of my other groups. Whether this is because people found the more streamlined introductions too impersonal, or because something is broken and the group invitations aren't being seen, I don't know, but what I do know is that this experiment didn't work out very well. I'm just going to go back to posting the invites in the comments section. Still, thanks for the suggestion. It was an interesting idea, even if it didn't work out.

You invited me to post my photo of a melon ball cocktail. Usually I am invited to post a photo and don't have to join the group to do so. But you got my attention, I joined the group and posted 12 beverage photos that have some green. I thought the photos looked nice all lined up together in harmonizing colors on your first page.. Maybe I'll come back later and post an all-blue lineup!

What I'm going to do is use the invite function just for people who are already in the group. Even somebody with just one cocktail photo might take others, later. Later on, having not joined, the prospective member might have difficulty remembering exactly where we were.

That would seem to be supported by what I saw today - the pool continuing to grow, while membership numbers plateaued. Making the process more convenient for the person I'm inviting is something I'm certainly in favor of doing, but I am a little concerned that an invite arriving without a welcome message is going seem a little impersonal, like a letter arriving without a salutation, maybe? But if I send an invite to the group, an invite for the photo, and a welcome message, perhaps that's a little too much.

A photo, no matter how good it is, remains an inanimate object. To invite the photo, but not the member, perhaps sends a very bad message to some - that I'm more interested in the object created than I am in the person who created it. That's not a message I'd ever want to send. Had I not been up all night, and overeager to get the task at hand complete, with a clearer head, I would have thought about that, before acting.

Just added mine per your request :-) I agree, definitely start using the invite option. The only problem with that is that then people will add their photos but won't join the group. Maybe use the invite if they have only one cocktail photo, but if they have many, ask them to join the group?

Some people will just click to add the image other will find the group to their interest and join the group. I think that is the best way to build a group.
