“Many thousand years ago, the first lunatic appeared. How or why he was produced I do not claim to know. People were natural and unarmored in those days they still felt nature in themselves and around them. They had no concept of “mental illness”; they could not imagine it. When the first lunatic appeared, these simple, natural people could not understand that there was something wrong with him. They listened to his hallucinations and delusions and accepted these visions as reports from a higher world. There were fantasies of demons and flames such as schozophrenics still experience today. When such myths were believed, the delusions of the first lunatic were believed also. Many biological drives, such as humans have in common with all animals, were called “Evil.” In the attempt to repress these drives, muscular tension and respiratory blocks developed: and out of this armoring of the biological being, secondary drives of a perverted nature arose-sadism and masochism. Furthermore armoring was then created to contain these destructive forces. The human race became completely unnatural, robotic, emotionally plagued. The process has continued and worsened over the centuries. There is no political solution to the problem: no matter who is in power the armoring continues and sadism and masochism continue. People do not know what they are doing or what is going on around them. In order to oppose the emotional plague, people must first know that it exists; in order to liberate themselves; people must first understand how they have been enslaved; in order to realize a jail-break, we must first realize we are in prison. Since we know none of these things we continue acting out the fantasies of dead lunatics. We are mad, and have the delusion that we are sane. We are robots and have the delusion that we are free. We are obsessed and have the delusion that we are scientific and rational. To state these facts bluntly is to insult the vanity of every man and woman on the planet, and to be denounced as a fanatic, an extremist, an anarchist. But if we are to have any chance of survival at all at least one person must speak out frankly and tell the truth about the horror of the situation. No matter how it offends religious dogmas about our own rationality, or political dogmas that the problem exists only in some other country full of bad people. The problem exists in each and every one of us. In your shallow breathing. In your tense muscles. In your anger at hearing the truth about yourselves. That is why I have been condemned again and again, and why I will be condemned one more time tonight.”

Howard Menger’s “Authentic Music From Another Planet” (1957)

I am Howard Menger. The following statements which I shall make are true facts that can and will be verified at the proper time.

The music that has been recorded on the reverse side of this record has come to me from outer space. I have been instructed by a person from another planet to bring this music to the attention of the people on this Earth. I have had direct contact with people from other planets, and have spoken with them on many occasions. I have riden in their space ships; they have taken me to their planets, and have brought me back to Earth again several times. I have seen how they live, what they wear, what they eat, and how they look. They are friendly people, and are by far more advanced spiritually and physically than the people of this planet. At the present time they are observing us. They wish to help us to help ourselves to attain a higher understanding of life and its meaning.

Many people from this Earth have already seen some of their space craft, which they call flying saucers, and other flying objects, which they cannot describe. These objects are real, and are space crafts from other planets. There are people in them, and many of them have already landed on this Earth. They are now in our midst, mingling with you, and observing you without your knowledge. As I have said before, they are only here to help you: they are peace loving people, and worship the same infinite creator that we do. This shall all be proven at the proper time.

Now, getting back to the music that has come to me from another planet.

One day, while driving alone in my car, I suddenly noticed that I had no control of the car whatsoever. I kept riding for miles through the countryside under the direction of a higher intelligence. I knew that my car and I were being assisted by someone from outer space. I did not know where I was being taken. When I finally came to a stop, I saw an old cabin in the woods. It was the only cabin in sight for miles around, secluded and obscure. While I was standing outside the cabin, I heard the strangest music from a piano being played from within the cabin. I was entranced. I walked in and there sitting at the piano and playing was a man who later introduced himself as someone from the planet Saturn.

I looked at the piano and saw that it was entirely different from our conventional pianos. The instrument was much lower and closer to the floor, and the keyboard was much longer and contained many more keys than our piano keyboards. The keys had strange markings on them, which I did not understand.

I heard the music played only once, and yet it remained in my mind as if I knew it before. I was then told by this man to play this music on a piano, and bring it to the attention of the people here on Earth. I never before knew how to play the piano, yet it seemed that some strange force guides my fingers to play the music that I heard in the cabin.

I stayed with the man who said he was from Saturn, and with the two other wonderful men who said they were from Venus. I stayed with them through the early morning hours. There were other fascinating instruments and gadgets in the cabin. I asked many questions, which were answered, some of which will be revealed in my book.

Before turning this record over you will hear two selections. The first selection is titled “Marla” - she is the young lady pictured with me on the album cover. She is the sister of the beautiful blonde Venusian who spoke to me many years ago, who was my first contact from outer space. The whole story will be found in the books entitled “From Outer Space to You”, written by me, and “My Saturnian Lover”, written by Miss Marla Baxter. The second selection is called “The Theme from The Song from Saturn”. These two selections are interpretations that are taken from the actual music that has come to me from another planet.

We will now hear “Marla”, followed by “The Theme from The Song from Saturn”.

You may now turn the record over and listen to “The Song from Saturn”, as it is played by me while my fingers are guided by this strange force. I have also been instructed to tell the people that those hearing this music would get a feeling, would reach an awareness — it would act as a mental assist to release something from their subconscious, and they would react in their conscious state with understanding and spiritual love for each other, toward mankind on this planet Earth. Striding buoyantly across the low-gravity surface of the moon, there may someday be strange new men — part human, part machine — like the ones above. They will have a strange name: CYBORGS (for CYBernetic ORGanisms). Cyborgs, according to the daring new idea, will be men whose body organs and systems are automatically adjusted for life in unearthly environments by artificial organs and senses. Some of these devices will be attached, others actually implanted by surgery. With their aid cyborgs can dispense with clumsy, easy-to-puncture space suits in which earth conditions are recreated. Instead they can move about safely wearing not much more than they would at home.

The artificial senses of cyborgs will measure changes inside the body and outside in the environment. They will signal artificial glands telling them what to secrete for regulating normal body functions. Then body temperature may fall to that of a fish in ice, or the pulse may quicken like a robin’s in flight, but the human organism will survive. Fantastic as the idea sounds, its originators (see next page) think that it is feasible and that much of the knowledge needed already exists.

The Freeman painting is described:

ON MOON cyborgs unreel cable to explosive for seismic blast. On front cyborg’s belt, tubes pump chemicals to blood to control (from left) blood pressure, pulse, energy, tranquility, blood sugar, body temperature, radiation tolerance. Pumps obey sensors like radiation counter in his left thigh or blood-pressure gauge in his right thigh. Heart, in X-ray view, sends blood to the implanted converter which remakes oxygen and carbon from CO₂, taking place of lungs. ON back of other cyborg are food supply (top), master fuel cell, food processor and wastes’ canister.

And what of the CYBORG’S CONCEIVERS, Dr. Nathan Kline and Manfred Clynes (seen below, showing a computer tape predicting a man’s pulse rate from his breath rate; from left to right, wiggly lines showing breath rate, the actual pulse rate, the predicted pulse rate)?

A PAIR OF CREATORS: The cyborg idea, presented recently to an impressed Astronaut conference, was conceived by an unusual partnership of doctor and computer engineer. Dr. Nathan Kline is a famous psychiatrist and researcher in mental drugs at New York’s Rockland State Hospital. Engineer Manfred Clynes does computer studies at the same hospital on body cybernetics: the interrelationship of the body’s check-and-balance systems.

For cyborgs, Kline and Clynes dispense with most conventional space flight plans. Cyborgs will wear sealed skintight suits but will travel in unsealed cabins exposed to the near vacuum of space. Ordinarily, at these low pressures the blood would boil and the lungs explode. But cyborgs’ lungs will be partly deflated and their blood will be cooled. To keep from getting numbed their brains will be warmed or fed energizers. Their messages to one another will be picked up electrically from their vocal nerves and transmitted by radio. Their mouths will be sealed and unused. Concentrated food will be piped direct to their stomachs or blood streams. Wastes will be chemically reprocessed to make new food. Totally worthless end-products will be kept in small canisters on their backs. Kline’s and Clynes’ motives in developing cyborgs are not all astronautic. Kline wants to work out the problems involved because the solutions will have vast implications for medicine as a whole. Clynes, an accomplished pianist, feels the artistic experiences to be had in space should not be overlooked. “Imagine,” he says, “what leaps a ballet dancer could take on the moon.”

In 1957, LIFE photographer Ralph Crane covered George Van Tassel’s “Fifth Interplanetary Spacecraft Convention” at the Giant Rock in the California desert, capturing dozens of images that have found their way into the Google-hosted LIFE archive. In attendance were the likes of Daniel Fry, Orfeo Angelucci, Howard Menger, Evelyn Smith, Truman Bethurum, and a few others BSRF followers may just recognize.

Unfortunately, this particular gallery is thoroughly disorganized, tagged only with the description “Flying Saucer Convention”, the year 1957, and the photographer Ralph Crane. We’ll be continuing to browse and search through it for ourselves in the days and weeks to come, and encourage all interested parties to do likewise.

After highlighting Max Freedom Long’s genesis of Huna, we feel it would be remiss of us to neglect the other side: “Huna is not Hawaiian.”

Teaching universal oneness, positive thinking, and the law of attraction, Huna has inspired generations of seekers to use its techniques to achieve health, wealth, happiness, and peace of mind. In the early days of the Borderland Sciences Research Associates, Meade Layne worked closely with a scholar of Polynesian mysticism (and BSRA co-founder) Max Freedom Long, dedicating extensive coverage to Long’s pamphlets and articles on Huna in the Round Robin. One of the first featured pamphlets, reproduced in an abridged format across four or five issues in 1946, was called “Huna – The Workable Psycho-Religious System of the Polynesians”, and it offers a simple introduction to the studies of Max Long and his colleagues, “explain[ing] in fairly general terms a part of the basic theory [of Huna] and its methods of application.” In the pamphlet (and in later books), Long claimed to have uncovered the ancient knowledge of the na kahuna, clues to which had “come largely through a study of the meanings of the roots of the Hawaiian words”, and proposed that by using the knowledge, he could now link the kahuna’s powers of fire-walking, healing by touch, and other sacred wisdoms to the psycho-spiritual model of the day — “Huna worked for na kahuna. It should work for us.”

You may recognize the plasma lamp, a popular item designed by Bill Parker in the 1970s, without knowing it was originally developed by Nikola Tesla in the late nineteeth century. What Tesla called the “inert gas discharge tube” was just one novel product of his on-going electrical experimentations, a life-long work that inspired and laid the foundations for our modern technological world. While some may applaud his development of alternating current and radio, or marvel at the effects of Tesla coils and plasma lamps, these must be seen as the beginnings, and not the ending, of what are Tesla’s great contributions to science and society, and there is much left to be learned from his research.

As far as we appear to have come, there is further to go if we are to understand, recreate, and expand on the theories and technologies he envisioned. There is more to Tesla than meets the eye.
