GOD’S BOSTIN’ RULES:
1. “Ar bin the Lord yaar God, yow cor ave ova daft un’s befower me”

2. “Dow put stuff befower God”

3. “Yow cor tek the naame o’ the Lord yaah God in vain”

4. “Git yaself to Sunday meeting ay it”

5. “Honor ya dad un ya mom”

6. “Yow cor kill con ya”

7. “Yow woe av it off with sumone elses missus/bloke”

8. “No pinchin’”

9. “Dow mek out ya muckers dun it”

10. “Dow get jealous of ya maates stuff”

via theologicalscribbles.blogspot.com

And a little background:

Apparently there is a Black Country Bible which starts along the lines of “In the beginning there was the Word. And the Word was Bostin”

The Black Country is an area of the English West Midlands conurbation, to the north and west of Birmingham, and to the south and east of Wolverhampton, around the South Staffordshire coalfield. It has a combined population of around one million.

By the late 19th century, this area had become one of the most intensely industrialised in the nation. The South Staffordshire coal mines, the coal coking operations, and the iron foundries and steel mills that used the local coal to fire their furnaces, produced a level of air pollution that had few equals anywhere in the world.

It is popularly believed that The Black Country got its name because of pollution from these heavy industries that covered the area in black soot. There is an anecdote (of dubious authenticity) about Queen Victoria ordering the blinds lowered on her carriage as the royal train passed through. However, historians suggest that it is more likely that the name existed even before the Industrial Revolution; outcroppings of black coal scarred the surface of the local heath, and the presence of coal so near the surface rendered the local soil very black.

The Black Country is also known for its distinctive dialect, which differs slightly in various parts of the region.

Get your Black Country t-shirts here>>

via bostin.org.uk

"Bostin" has become a slang-term of the Black Country. What was it before it was a slang term? That's for another time. Enough history for today.
Cheers,
Bostin

Was responding to a blog post by Dino Dogan this morning about the concept (and book) of “Radical Honesty". As I was responding I wanted to include something about my lifelong pursuit as a storyteller for “the moment”.

I started by crafting this sentence:

I'm an actor/director who's on a life long quest for the "moment" as in - being present and open enough to have a truthful experience filled with depth & meaning (this includes laughter btw) which creates a connected and unique experience.

I like it as a beginning in terms of defining it for me. A draft, if you will. I don’t think I’ve tried to put it to paper before. I’ve talked about and discussed it, but never tried to “senti-size” it before.

Would love to hear how you define “in the moment” (whatever your pursuit in life is)….

###

R.I.P. James Gammon, Character Actor Adept at Shepard Plays, Dies at 70 via Playbill.com (with my personal comments)

James Gammon, a rangy, gruff character actor who found his natural mileau in a slew of plays by Sam Shepard, died in Costa Mesa on July 16. He was 70 years old.

With his grizzled, weather-beaten face and hoarse voice, Mr. Gammon was a natural resident of the mythical and mourned American West Shepard used as the backdrop of many of his plays. Squinting under what seemed to be a never-setting Oklahoma sun, Mr. Gammon would alternately growl, mutter and bark his lines in such plays as Curse of the Starving Class, The Late Henry Moss, and the New York premieres of A Lie of the Mind and Simpatico.

Click the link above to read the whole story

"Shut Up, Dorn"
Probably one of my favorite movie lines ever, and one I consistently mimic.
This actor was simply one of my favorites. He always gave me good vibes and great hope as a character actor myself.
I saw him a few times on stage, most notably in Simpactico at the Public Theatre and Buried Child on Broadway, where his Dodge was just brilliant.
Also, saw him at a SAG Conversation a couple years ago. Awesome fellow. Out here in LA he was an early pioneer of making good quality contemporary theatre.

This news make me really sad...

R.I.P. James Gammon

Trent Hamm's 14-part Series (in order) on David Allen’s Getting Things Done (GTD)

I really enjoyed discovering Trent Hamm's mutli-part series (14 of 'em - that's commitment!) on David Allen's methodology for getting one's life under control first espoused in the book Getting Things Done. The articles are linked in sequential order at the end of this post.

Now commonly referred to as GTD, Hamm offers a serious primer for those interested in learning more about it and how to get started as well as maintain it over the course of time. What I enjoyed most about his series was his introduction and explanation of how he specifically engages the concepts and theories of Allen and puts them into practice, from managing his freelance writing career to building a shed and cooking his family dinner, Hamm breaks down the components of GTD and explains them in language everyone can relate to.

GTD has often been referred to (as even Hamm does through-out the series) as a "time management" system or "advanced to-do lists". Sure, one could put those labels on it, but it would really diminish what can be achieved using this methodology and the life changing potential it offers. Sure GTD will help you manage your time and can also help you with your todos, but it’s really a methodology for managing all the resources in your life and freeing the brain from “stuff” overload so that you can open the channels of creativity and have the potential to not only get things done, but thrive in the area(s) you’re truly striving for.

With Hamm's articles, it's really just semantics as he does discuss the potential that GTD has and in his clearly drawn examples, shows exactly how he tackles each component of GTD. His continued use of everyday examples clearly helps demystify the "process" of getting you into GTD and he's quite honest about what he does (and hence, what you could do) to get back on it should you fall a bit behind.

I'm especially enamored with the brain-dump as part of the weekly review. As Hamm's points out, I'm paraphrasing here, if things that you already brain-dumped previously are appearing again, it's a big clue that maybe these items might need some priority treatment from you in the coming week.

Excellent stuff. Enjoy.

Another great resource is the official public site for the David Allen Co., GTD Tiimes.

Have fun learning about GTD and then go and get some things done!

The quote in this slide above is from the famous Aikido instructor Kensho Furuya. Sadly, Furuya-sensei passed away a few years ago. His book "Kodo Ancient Ways: Lessons in the Spiritual Life of the Warrior/Martial Artist" is a very good read whether you are practicing one of the martial arts or not. The lessons are many. http://snipurl.com/zcoiq The image is from iStockphoto. The description for the photo on iStock: "Cormorant resting on the shore, feathers covered in pollution."

But after some diligent research and a whole lotta' back & forth on the merits and demerits, we've decided to start pulling all of our photos from Facebook.

Everyone has heard by this point all the hullaballoo about Facebook's privacy issues. What you may have missed is the issue of ownership. We've discovered bits of language in the Facebook Terms of Service that, frankly, disturb us.

When you post User Content to the Site, you authorize and direct us to make such copies thereof as we deem necessary in order to facilitate the posting and storage of the User Content of the Site. By posting User Content to any part of the Site, you automatically grant, and you represent and warrant that you have the right to grant, to the Company an irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, transferable, fully paid, worldwide license (with the right to sublicense) to use, copy, publicly perform, publicly display, reformat, translate, excerpt (in whole or in part) and distribute such User Content for any purpose on or in connection with the Site or the promotion thereof, to prepare derivative works of, or incorporate into other works, such User Content, and to grant and authorize sublicense of the foregoing.

What this basically means is that although Facebook allows us to retain ownership over our uploaded work, we also understand that Facebook declares it has the right to do whatever, whenever with our photographs. If Facebook wanted to sell our images, of our clients, to someone else, they absolutely can and we'll never know. But this isn't an issue of money or recompense; ownership over our work is something we take very seriously here at Little Acorn Photography, in both personal and professional stances. And its also an issue of protecting you, the client.

We can't, in good conscience, allow for a third-party entity to stake a claim to our work and potentially use images of our clients without our or their knowledge, so at this point, the best we can do to rectify this is by removing our photos from the L.A.P. page. This is a small part of why we started this blog, so we would have a different, and easy, way to share the latest images with everyone in one convenient area.

via littleacorn.posterous.com

I ran across this at the Little Acorn Photography website while doing some research on Posterous (slowly becoming my new interweb home).

Wow! is all that comes to mind. You still own your photos and other content, but if you read that inner blockquote carefully, you are authorizing the sublicense of ALL your user content to be used to promote or make derivative works from or incorporate into other work.

So, basically, if I'm interpreting this correctly, thefacebook could publish a book called "People of Facebook" and post any photos that have been uploaded. Or "Babies of Facebook 2010" and all the folks posting photos of their kidz would be granting a license to use those photos in a book, movie, video, what-have-you.

Now, would thefacebook actually DO that, in light of all the recent flack over privacy? I don't think they would, but they have the right to.

With the age of digital/mobile photos and insta-posting, who knows what the true ownership is anymore.

First my own clothing line and now my very own steakhouse! I'm quite the entrepreneur! And I love the fact it's in North Carolina where I went to grad school (not in the same town exactly, but who's looking at the map.).

If anyone is ever in Burlington and eats here, please take a photo and let me know! It's on my list next time I'm in the area, that's for sure!

The WSOP has started to allow people to text, etc. I guess, however, the rule is once the players are in the money, no more electronics allowed on the main floor, so be interesting to see in JRB can sneak another video or two out of it.

You may have read about CHOKE, the animated short I did with Terence Anthony, in my previous post about it’s creation (LINK).

Well, it’s been screened a few times and now makes it’s home at IndieFlix. A cool distribution portal for independent filmmakers.

http://www.indieflix.com/film/choke-31100/

Here’s a little teaser clip of me as PHIL, a not so nice co-worker of LYDIA. Stream it or order a DVD to support Indie Filmmaking and to find out what happens to Phil...

Via LIFEHACK.ORG - A New Productivity for the Smartphone Era? (with response from me)

About a year ago, I published a question in a Blackberry forum asking how the devices had helped to make professionals more productive.

The responses I received were typified by the one that I remember the most: “I am more productive because I can check my email on the train to and from work.”

This seemed like a reasonable response at the time. As a person who gets a bit nervous when I have nothing productive to do, I could relate. While I don’t take the train, the value of converting “down time” to productive time is a pretty attractive one.

And apparently, I’m not alone.

A recent survey of 1 million users in 34 countries showed that 62% believed that their work productivity was “much better” due to new technology. 75% consider the opportunity provided by devices such as smartphones and laptops to remain in constant contact with work as a positive development.

Apparently, “productivity” has been redefined.

According to our new definition, productivity has something to do with two things: converting “down time” to work time, and being able to “stay in touch” with what’s happening at work at all times. This kind of commitment used to be associated with “Type A” executives, but nowadays anyone with the right tools can join in the fun.

“Fun” might be a strong word, but many of us like to find new ways to be effective, and like to feel as if we’re getting better at managing our time.

However, what’s actually happening in the life of many professionals is not amusing at all. Their companies have taken the opportunity given them by technology and the recession to convince employees to spend more “down time” doing work. At the same time, they send a subtle message that “staying in touch” with work also means being available 24 hours a day for 52 weeks of the year.

Converting “Down Time” Nowadays, it seems, everyone with a smartphone has gotten into the habit of continuously trying to convert “down time” into useful, work time. Here are some everyday examples of ways in which many professionals are converting their “down time.”

- a manager driving on the highway at 70 m.p.h. sends a text to his team (while spilling hot coffee into his lap)

- an engineer in a meeting that’s going slowly, checks her email and replies (missing two action items assigned to her)

- an accountant watching his child play baseball on Saturday morning closes a deal in the fourth inning via cellphone (and lies to his son about seeing him make his first catch ever)

- a supervisor attending 3 days of personal productivity training is unable to leave her smartphone untouched for more than 15 minutes (and later complains that the trainer was ineffective)

- a consultant speaking to a client on the phone remembers that he should have sent an urgent message to a colleague, and quietly does so (even as the client notes the sudden lapse in attention and interprets it as a lack of interest in continuing the relationship)

- a hard driving attorney once again takes his smartphone to the urinal where he can multi-task (… and is noticed by his boss’ husband who happened to borrow his smartphone just five minutes earlier)

- a family cheers in unison when executive-Mom forgets her smartphone at home 5 hours into the annual vacation (and falls into despair when FedEx delivers it the next day)

I recently asked a client: “How did your big presentation to the executive team go?” She responded: “OK… but the CEO spent the entire hour on his (expletive) Blackberry.”

This was bad news for my client, whose project was now being viewed by the CEO as another chunk of his “down time.”

If these are all examples of attempts to convert “down time” into useful time, take note of the way in which “down time” has been expanded. This is more than filling in the time that would be spent sitting on a train. The habit has invaded every nook and cranny of our lives, sparing no-one, and costing us dearly.

At this point, many of you reading are probably shaking your heads at some of the poor etiquette on display. I did the same, until I began to think of the mindset of the employees involved.

All the habits listed above were developed by professionals who were well intended — they were trying to boost their productivity by converting “down time” into something of value. Unfortunately, once we humans are hooked on a habit, it’s hard to stop, and we end up employing it inappropriately, much to the annoyance of others in our lives. In that moment, the fun has disappeared and the habit has become an empty, automatic practice that does more harm than good.

The worse part is that in many companies, executives are leading the way by example, as they are often the first users of these devices and the employees most likely to squeeze work into every available minute of their lives.

They are also the ones who are unwilling to sever the connection between themselves and their colleagues, even for a few hours each day.

Staying in Touch With Work A friend of mine once told me the story of a manager of rambunctious employee who was essential to the organization, but frequently complained and threatened to leave. In the space of a few months, he got married, bought a house and had a baby.

After these happy events, his manager passed my friend in the hall on hearing the latest it of happy news and whispered conspiratorially: “I have him now!” In other words, with his new family and financial obligations, the rambunctious employee was unlikely to raise more trouble, and would probably settle into a comfortable routine of corporate service with a steady eye on his pension, benefits and 401(k).

The point of the story? There are executives and managers who are blithely offering the gift of smartphones to their employees, and in some companies it’s seen as a reward, and a status symbol.

What many of them know, however, is that when an employee accepts the device, they are likely to join the group of the always-reachable, and engage in many of the behaviors that their higher-ups are practicing, such as: – sending and receiving messages at 2:30 am – using weekends, vacations and holidays to conduct company business – implicitly agreeing to respond to all messages within a short time-frame – interrupting ANY activity to “find out what my boss wants”

(If the stories told on YouTube and on blogs are true, then _anything_ can be interrupted nowadays by smartphone use!)

To put it in more Machiavellian terms, companies have found a way to take time and attention that employees used to spend on their own, with their families and with their friends, and convert it to company time. It starts with the gift of a smartphone.

While I truly doubt that there is some master plan, don’t doubt for a minute that a manager doesn’t know the difference between her employees who are always-reachable from those who aren’t. Companies can make big gains in productivity by simply giving away smartphones to their employees, while ignoring the added stress that gets created.

There are some companies that are noticing what is happening, however.

Enlightened companies take a page out of the medical profession, which has long realized that it’s important to maintain some kind of boundaries in their professionals’ lives. Companies can put in place policies that clearly delineate time spent “at work,” “on call” and “away from work.” They recognize that these are three distinct modes that must be enforced if employees are expected to function at their best.

Most employees, however, find themselves in un-enlightened companies and must make their own way, starting with 3 steps they must take.

Their first step is to identify the unproductive habits in their time management system. They can do the kind of analysis I describe on my website (www.2time-sys.com) to find the strong and weak spots.

The second step is to create an improvement plan that outlines the habits to be changed, along with some target dates. This gives them some realistic goals to heard towards.

The third step requires them to create an environment to make the habit changes easier to effect. Unfortunately, most habits do not change easily or quickly, and the right blend of supports can make all the difference.

Employees who have begun this personal journey need to make a plan to enlighten the executive team. Most smartphone use started with the CEO and her direct reports, and they are the ones who, in all likelihood, introduced, for example, a culture of 24 hour availability to the organization.

In an effort like this, employees need allies at all levels to help demonstrate that bad habits developed in the executive suite can wreak havoc when rolled out to an entire company. (There is a growing body of data available that can be used in this effort.) In an intervention, executives can be asked to imagine an all-company meeting in which half the attendees spend most of the meeting on their smartphones, lost in cyber-space. (Some would simply argue that they are following the fine example of their CEO!)

If the executive team can be convinced that these behaviors are destructive, then the company can move to specify some specific changes.

For example, the US Federal Government has banned the use of cell-phones by its employees while they are driving and conducting government business. In part, that’s because of obvious safety reasons.

From a productivity stand-point, however, it makes perfect sense. Other policies can be introduced to limit the use of smartphones and laptops during off hours, for starters. (In some companies, turning off all messaging devices between 12:00 am and 6:00 am would be a major step.)

Each company needs to look at its culture, as well as its strategy, and phase in these changes in a way that makes sense. They need to allow for the fact that habit change takes time, and that a new culture could not be born in an instant.

The single employee who decides to change their company has a very difficult task on her hands, however, as she realizes that smartphones have done more to change company culture in the past few years than any vision statement or 2 day retreat. She needs to appreciate that some executives may decide that they like the way things are going, and don’t want to change a thing. Those companies who take this route probably won’t see any immediate fallout as employees cling to their jobs for fear of losing them, but they’ll pay later. At some point in the future, productivity will be impacted on a large scale, as employees burn themselves out and the bottom line suffers.

It’s much better to make the small, enlightened changes now, than to wait until the cost is higher and the effort required seems to be impossible to garner.

All it takes to get started is one or two employees who are willing to redefine what productivity means for themselves and their companies, in favour of long-term results that are sustainable.

via feeds.lifehack.org

This kind of thinking has become prevalent in the show biz world as well. Actors are being told that there is no excuse for not "being available", that they "should" have a smartphone so they can get emails at all hours, because "you don't know when something might come in". This is kind of sickening.

Seriously, everyone, slow down!

Yes, smartphones give you easier access when out and about and they do come in handy, but seriously, to be making it a "requirement" - Come on! Personally, I do have a iPhone, but the email feature is set to NOT alert me. I check the email on my schedule (usually every couple hours, but sometimes less). If it's important, they'll call. And that's a thought for another time ("you don't HAVE to answer the phone"), so for now, take it easy, slow down. I'm not saying disappear for days at a time, but don't be a slave to the technology.

###
