Tilda Swinton brings erudite vampires to Cannes

CANNES, France — Tilda Swinton injects her own brand of otherworldly-cool into Jim Jarmusch's latest movie "Only Lovers Left Alive," an unusual comedy that puts a spin on the age-old vampire genre.

The film, the last English-language entry competing for the Cannes Film Festival's Palme d'Or, sees Swinton play Eve, a grungy but erudite vampire — who's married to a forlorn vampire musician, Adam, played by Tom Hiddlestone. Several-hundred-year-old Adam — of Biblical fame — has been living quite happily ever since being expelled from the Garden of Eden.

CANNES, France — After two weeks, 20 films and parade after parade down the red carpet, the Cannes Film Festival has not produced a clear-cut frontrunner for the Palme d'Or.

The prestigious award, given to the best film in competition, will be handed out Sunday night, decided upon by a jury headed by Steven Spielberg. And while this year's festival has boasted a cinematic feast, no single film is believed to have clearly set itself apart from the pack.

CANNES, France — For 66 years, the Cannes Film Festival's highest prize, the Palme d'Or, has been one of the most prestigious in movies. Winners have ranged from classic American films (Martin Scorsese's "Taxi Driver," Francis Ford Coppola's "The Conversation") to European classics (Federico Fellini's "La Dolce Vita").

'GRIGRIS' ENTRY IN CANNES BRINGS PRIDE TO AFRICAN NATION OF CHAD

Director Mahamat-Saleh Haroun stirred up some emotion and national pride when he premiered his new movie "Grigris," at the Cannes Film Festival this week.

The filmmaker, who was born in the troubled Central African republic of Chad, said the film received a 20-minute standing ovation from the festival audience, which included some Chad politicians.

LOS ANGELES — The Stone Temple Pilots accuse former frontman Scott Weiland of misusing the band's name to further his solo career and want a judge to strip the rocker of his ability to use the group's name or songs.

A lawsuit filed Friday in Los Angeles accuses Weiland of being chronically late to concerts while the group was together and having his lawyer attempt to interfere with the airplay of the group's new single "Out of Time."

Rare Superman comic found in house insulation

MINNEAPOLIS — It's considered the Holy Grail of comic books: Action Comics No. 1 from 1938, featuring the debut of Superman. And David Gonzales found one mixed in with old newspapers insulating a house he was renovating in a small town in Minnesota.

Gonzales did some research that confirmed the comic with a cover showing the Man of Steel holding a car over his head was valuable, though it's not worth as much as it could have been.

Latest 'Bachelorette' won't say if she's engaged

NEW YORK — ABC's newest "Bachelorette," Desiree Hartsock, says it's not hard to keep the details of her experience on the show a secret from her friends.

"Ironically, I'm kind of a private person anyway, so my friends know not to ask," she said in a recent interview.

Hartsock has some experience with the matter, although her last reality TV romance ended in heartbreak.

The 27-year-old competed for the affection of Sean Lowe on the last season of "The Bachelor." She was sent home after a disastrous date where he met her family.

Snooki: NJ Gov Christie 'just doesn't like us'

SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J. — New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was never a fan of MTV's "Jersey Shore," saying it unfairly cast the state in a negative light.

So when Nicole Polizzi, otherwise known as Snooki, got to meet the governor Friday and shake his hand, their exchange was a bit awkward.

Christie and "Jersey Shore" cast members appeared separately on NBC's "Today" show during filming in Seaside Heights, N.J., to talk about the state's recovery from Superstorm Sandy. Seaside is where "Jersey Shore" was filmed.

Memorial Day is coming and that means bringing out the grill for the season. Wild swordfish was in the market so I decided to grill it and serve it with a tarragon butter sauce laid over a bed of tomato succotash made with cocktail tomatoes grown by my friends at Backyard Farms in Madison, Maine. I had some corn I had shucked and frozen from last summer in the freezer and some edamame which I love. The dish turned out more than delicious so here is the"recipe" that I used. I use that term loosely since I just threw things together from what I had on hand.

SINGAPORE — Portraying USS Enterprise helmsman Hikaru Sulu in the latest "Star Trek" movie comes with big shoes to fill, but the man who played the part in the TV series and six films has given his blessing to the actor currently playing the role.

Even though George Takei — whose portrayal of Sulu made him a science fiction legend — said he had not yet had time to catch recently released "Star Trek Into Darkness" due to his busy schedule, he feels John Cho is the "ideal choice" to carry on Sulu's legacy due to the actor's "charm, intelligence, dash and sharpness."
