Fidelity wins healthy workplace award

The National Business Group on Health, a nonprofit association of large U.S. employers, today honored Fidelity Investments with the 2013 Best Employers for Healthy Lifestyles award at a leadership summit in Washington, D.C. for its commitment and dedication to promoting a healthy workplace.

Fidelity was among 65 U.S. employers that received the award. This marks the first year the firm has received a Healthy Lifestyles award.

EdX adds 15 schools to online roster

Bernanke forecasts gains from computer technology

WASHINGTON — Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke says pessimists who are forecasting that the economy will not reap sizable benefits from the computer revolution are likely to be proven wrong.

Bernanke told a college graduating class Saturday that the long-range practical consequences of innovations such as faster computers and the Internet are hard to predict. But he said inventors have only scratched the surface of the commercial applications that can be obtained in such fields as medicine and clean energy.

OMAHA, Neb. — Investor Warren Buffett encouraged young workers to find jobs that they are passionate about, as he offered career advice online Tuesday on a variety of topics.

Buffett regularly takes time out of his schedule every year to meet with groups of students from about 40 colleges to answer their questions on life and business. Tuesday's online forum gave him the chance to offer advice to a broader audience.

Today marks National Teacher Day — a way to commemorate the lasting contributions teachers have on their students.

A recent survey conducted by kars4kids, a national educational nonprofit, measured the effects teachers had on U.S. adults. According to their findings, 80 percent of adults recognize that their work ethic, time spent as a community volunteer and even their career choice was a direct result of teachers who inspired them in the classroom.

Cheeseboy looks to hire 30 for Downtown Crossing shop

Local grilled cheese franchise Cheeseboy said today it is seeking to hire 30 team members for its new brick-and-mortar store in Downtown Crossing.

The 1,200-square-foot restaurant, located at 280 Washington St., is expected to open this spring. Applicants must be at least 16 years old, officials said, adding applications can be submitted at www.cheeseboy.com.

Currently, Cheeseboy operates eight other locations, including four in Massachusetts -- at South Station, the Prudential Center Mall, South Shore Plaza and the Natick Mall.

President, first lady asks companies to hire vets

WASHINGTON — First lady Michelle Obama says companies participating in a program to help veterans find work have hired or trained 290,000 veterans and military spouses, nearly tripling the original goal of the program with about eight months to spare.

Obama said Tuesday that the program called Joining Forces has also generated pledges from businesses to hire or train another 435,000 in the next five years.

The jobless rate for those veterans who served after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks fell from 12.1 percent in 2011 to 9.9 percent last year.

Fishermen can’t fathom catch cuts

Local fishermen and elected officials are calling on the federal government for disaster assistance to ease the financial pain they anticipate will start tomorrow, when catch limits are set to be cut by as much as 78 percent.

At a rally at the Boston Fish Pier, more than 100 fishermen and supporters said the new limits would cripple already struggling businesses and have ripple effects for on-shore businesses and seafood consumers.
