Gun law a liability

Once again a Democrat wants to further restrict the rights of law-abiding citizens (“Conley takes aim at guns with strict new bill,” May 12). Suffolk District Attorney Daniel Conley wants to force gun owners to carry liability insurance. This will just make legal ownership of a gun prohibitively expensive in Massachusetts, thereby making gun ownership for many, especially the poor, all but impossible.

Any speculation that U.S. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) is of presidential timber is laughable (May 19). It is a notion doomed to fail, even if he did give the keynote address for a New Hampshire Republican fundraiser last night . His real agenda is to derail Hillary Clinton’s prospects. Beyond that, anytime President Obama says “yes,” Paul’s automatic response is “no.”

— Gerald Alch, Brookline

When Margery Eagan wrote: “What we’re learning about (President Obama’s) administration has undermined our basic trust in government,” I laughed (May 16). She and the mainstream media have finally awoken to the fact that this government is corrupt? Let’s face it, if the Associated Press hadn’t been thrown under the bus, the media would still be doing damage control. The hands that helped Barack Obama get elected and shine like a new penny, have finally felt some teeth.

— Mary T. Harrington,
Hyde Park

Caroline County, Va., is known as the birthplace of racehorse Secretariat, and now the burial place of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev (May 11). Since our area is a far suburb of Washington, D.C., we were strongly affected by the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon. We lost loved ones. Fort A.P. Hill is in Caroline County, and many soldiers trained here before going off to protect our nation. Now we have let a terrorist be laid to rest so near to us.

— Jennifer Pickerel,
Port Royal, Va.

I don’t get all this angst about where Tamerlan Tsarnaev was to be buried or what his brother’s college grades were (May 7). We are a nation of decency, and there are laws and due process in place to handle these kinds of situations. This is part of the reason why most people would prefer to live here rather than in any other country. We need to be strong enough and brave enough to continue our way of life. As for the brother’s college grades, I’m sure that authorized investigators have all the access they need to school records.

I do not see the Marathon bombing as terrorism, which requires one to attack for some political purpose. This is more a case of lazy, narcissistic men who wanted to express their dissatisfaction in a big way — with no political goal, except destruction. In contrast, Osama bin Laden at least had a belief system that informed his evil. And he went to war in Afghanistan against the former Soviet Union, leaving a comfortable life in a wealthy family behind. The Tsarnaev brothers apparently just had little and did evil.

— Michael Burke, Wakefield

Running to Boston

I will never forget the moment, at about the 100-yard mark of the 117th Boston Marathon, that I thought, with sunshiny clarity, “this is going to be the most amazing thing I ever do.” From the time I stepped onto the platform at Back Bay Station, Boston made me feel welcome, I was a part of your tradition and was swept up in your pride for three days in April. During the Marathon itself, there were hundreds or thousands of people who yelled out “Go Aussie Go!” — helping to carry me along those 26.2 miles.

No one in Massachusetts wants the body of Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the Marathon bombing suspect, buried in our ground (May 4). It would be a slap in the face.
