Now a days, everyone seems to be looking for a way to save some money. As easy as it may be to try and save money by not getting a cell phone cover, don’t. Cell phones are so expensive; the best way to protect them from scratches and nicks is to keep them in a cell phone cover. If you would like to save some money, why not consider creating your own cover out of fabric.

If you were to go to the store to buy a cover, it would most likely be made out of vinyl. If you wish, you can use vinyl to make your own cover, or pick a fun fabric to make something a little more unique. To make things even easier, consider using a fabric with a little bit of stretch to it.

Purchase a portion of clear plastic as well. This plastic should be just thick enough to provide protection for the phone, but not so thick that it is hard to sew. A great place to pick this up is a local home improvement store.

To begin, take measurements of the phone. First, measure the distance from the top most part of the phone screen to below the final row of keys. Next, measure the entire width of your phone. Cut the clear plastic to match these measurements. Next, measure the phone from the top part of the pnhone screen to over the very top part of your phone and just about 1/3 of the distance down the back portion. Cut a piece of vinyl to match these measurements. Finally, measure from the bottom row of keys and around the bottom portion of the phone and all the way up to the upper most part of your phone. Cut another piece of vinyl to match this measurement.

Begin by sewing the bottom part of the clear plastic to the piece of vinyl measure from the bottom. Next sew the top vinyl piece right to the top most portion of the clear plastic. Next, sew a Velcro strip or down to the underside part of the top piece (the portion that wraps right around the back). Now, sew yet another piece of the Velcro to the back part of the vinyl. You should now have a stitched piece that fits around the cell phone. It should fasten at the back.

Use a small piece of colored elastic in the same color of the vinyl or fabric you are using for the cover. Ideally, the elastic will be ½ inch in width. Cut two lengths of elastic, each just a bit shorter than the length of the side of the phone. As a guideline, try and make the elastic and inch from both the top and the bottom of your phone. Don’t forget to figure in the volume controls if there are any located on the side of the phone.

Sew in the elastic by attaching to the front side of the cover. Sew the opposing side of the piece of elastic strip to the backside. Cut a small slit to allow for your phone charger. For a finished look, consider stitching this slit.

To add welt, be sure to do so prior to sewing on the elastic strips. Sew it around the complete perimeter – both the back and the front. By attaching a piece of colored elastic vertically on the back portion of your phone, you will be able to easily attach and remove your phone to a belt. Alternatively, use a small piece of metal, formed like a small tongue depressor to fashion a pocket. Fold the metal in approximately in half. Using glue, attach one half to the interior of the pocket. Use the remaining side for attaching the phone to your pocket, belt or purse.

There are literally thousands of web directories available today. Almost every day a new web directory is being created and it is difficult to judge the quality and relevance of these websites. But you never know which website will be ranked high by the search engines when the next round of indexing happens.

Today the site may be free and ranked low but next week the same site may be ranked high in the search engines with high page rank and become a paid service! So, how to judge free directories to submit to?

Here are some factors to help you judge the free web directories

1. Are the directories search engine friendly?
2. Do the web directories provide static text links to the website? Many directories use javascripts, which are not search engine friendly. So you won’t get any SEO benefit. But if it a high traffic web directory then you can still consider placing your link on the web directory to get targeted traffic.
3. Has the directory been around for a long time? Search engines value older directories more than newbie sites.
4. Quality of the web directory.
5. Quality of sites linking to the directory.
6. Human edited directory, response time to questions.
7. Are the directories listed in the top search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN?

A Few Top Directories That Are Search Engine Friendly

dmoz.org – The Open Directory Project
yahoo.com – Yahoo Directory
botw.org – Best of The Web Directory
sbd.bcentral.com – MSN Small Business Directory
joeant.com – Joe Ant
tygo.com – Ty Go.com
skaffe.com
wowdirectory.com
goguides.org
01webdirectory.com
abilogic.com
allthewebsites.org
topicalbeach.com
sitesnoop.com
web-beacon.com
yeandi.com
rlrouse.com
elib.org
portalboost.com
linkopedia.com

Some are free directories to submit to and others accept only paid listings. Some like DMOZ are difficult to get into but once your site is listed you can expect a big boost in your rankings and traffic.

Many of the directories on the list are highly regarded by the search engines and getting listed on them gives your site more credibility, visibility and a better chance to get higher ranks in the search engines.

These directories are crawled frequently so your sites will be indexed lot quicker. These one-way links are much better than reciprocal links in terms of seo value and your site is sure to rank better in the search engines. With thousands of free directories to submit to you can get tons of one-way links pointing your way some of them from top-quality web directories. With so many links search engines have to take note and your rankings will dramatically improve.

By including attention grabbing titles and key word descriptions your website might even get some amount of traffic. Most important if the human editors do not modify your descriptions you can a lot of links for the desired keywords and phrases, which gives you an added boost in the search engines.

Do not neglect the newer web directories especially niche directories even if they do not have page rank or search engine rankings. Niche directories that cater to your particular area of interest will tend to attract people who are looking for what you are offering.
I have a high degree of admiration for Twitter’s CEO, Ev Williams. At the Web 2.0 Conference he was interviewed by John Batelle, where he asked what everyone wants to know, “How will Twitter Make Money?”. The answer that Ev gives is an example of why he is such a successful entrepreneur.

He says that they focus 97% of their time in making Twitter “better”, instead of looking of ways to make money, then he subtly hints at the point that the “magic” of making money is on having a large user base. He understands that without a large and growing audience, you can’t make money at all. Just like Microsoft, Google and any other resilient business, you must have a large installer base, so that you can reap your riches. What good is Twitter if only a couple of users are on it? However, Evan Williams understands that if they keep making Twitter better and they keep attracting more-and-more users, whatever monetization strategy Twitter comes up with, can be successful because they will be able to tap into an “existing” large customer base. They have USERS. They power is in having not someone, but an entire community of thousands to millions of people use your technology, service or product, so that you can make money.

My 2 cents

Josh has a lot of good ideas about what the app is going to be like. In his post, this bit stuck out to me:

…these mobile platforms may eventually become dominant ways to read the site, perhaps even rivaling the number of people who read TPM on the web. It would provide resources for building these different applications and customized versions, which isn’t cheap.

As a rule, I say never say never with technology. If anything, the minute you say building a better phone or news-reading platform can’t be done, it’s then destined to happen. So, in this case, I won’t say it’s impossible, but as the iPhone and computer are now, respectively, I think the computer will be a much more comfortable way of reading the news.

I love my iPhone but it definitely has its limits and I tend to use it to read the news when I don’t have my computer and/or a stable internet connection handy. The problem with the iPhone is that you can’t really skip around the internet as fast as you can on the computer. This is partially because there isn’t a large keyboard on the iPhone like there is on the computer. But also because even on a good day, a strong 3G connection isn’t quite as comfortably fast as a strong wireless or broadband connection. Additionally, there’s something about being able to have open tabs on a computer that makes reading the news much more pleasurable —I think the sensation has to do with the fact that some news and feature sites update automatically and you can notice as they do while focusing most of your attention on something else. That just doesn’t happen on the mobile phone browsers.

These critiques could (and I bet will) change sooner if not later but as it stands now I think the optimal way of surfing the news is on the computer, not the iPhone or Blackberry or whatever.

If you are hosting on a Wordpress blog that blocks installation of plug-in, but you want to show your Facebook statuses, pay close attention. This article will teach you a proven method to help achieve the task you desire. This method uses the Wordpress RSS widget as well as the Facebook status feed. If you have your own self-host Wordpress blog, you can still use this, however there are some better plug-in that you may be interested in. Some that might be a lot easier and nicer.

Follow these steps to achieve the desired outcome that you wished to get.

Step 1

First off, you most log into your Facebook, and place your cursor under profile. Once you have clicked profile, look for something called Mini Feed and once you’ve found it, click on See All.

Your browser may not support display of this image.

Step 2

Once you are under Mini Feed, take your mouse and click on “Status Stories”, located on the right column. You will then click on “My Status” which is positioned at the bottom.

Your browser may not support display of this image.

Step 3

The next step is to copy the My Status link. We will then use this in Wordpress blog. The link that you will copy will look something

Your browser may not support display of this image.

Step 4 (Wordpress)

Once you get under the Wordpress Admin, you then need to navigate your page over to Design >> Widget. After reaching this page, look for RSS Widget and proceed to add it onto your side bar.

Your browser may not support display of this image.

Step 5

You now need to paste the URL that you copied inside, and then you must proceed to give it a name and save it. After you have completed this, your Facebook status or statuses will be visible on your Wordpress blog.

Your browser may not support display of this image.

Following these simple steps will allow you to be able to show and view your Facebook statuses on your Wordpress blog. This will come in hand for many things, and is as simple as 1,2,3.

Here are some of the discussion threads with panelists comments in bold (paraphrased) and my thoughts following each in italics.

Dan Smith (Go2 Media)- The current climate is much better now to raise money than it was say. last October. Deals will take longer to get done both inside and outside. Entrepreneurs should spend their time on the numbers and on capital efficiency. VCs want to see your cash flow beyond your projected first and second rounds. They want to see what if scenarios- what if your expectations are wrong? How will you get through your cash? Today’s environment requires more interactions on your part just to get to a funder. You may be close to getting a term sheet but if the DOW is up or down all of a sudden, don’t be surprised if you get delayed. Market conditions are impacting the time we have to look at pitches.

RG- I know that among the entrepreneurs I have been talking to the past six months, a larger percentage are realizing they have to bootstrap the initial stages of their business before they seek funding, even from angel investors. Business plans, cash positions, pitch decks, what if scenarios, and ideas on how to scale all have to be thought out ahead of time.

Dev Gandhi (Nexage)- In today’s environment you need to be a broader play. For us, April and May was bad timing, but we did it! We signed over 25 customers in the past six months and have had good traction. But you can’t focus on a single area any more. Many startups are still weak in management. You have to show your potential investors some efficiency, some traction, in addition to your vision. Ad networks are a five year old business model, so for us, signing up customers was critical. For any startup, signing up customers should be the biggest focus of your plan, not the idea itself. You will have to fight a little to get your series A round, but if you survive and are growing, you will be taken care of in your series B.

RG- The feedback from many investors these days after they are pitched is “show me a client base” followed quickly by “show me a distribution model.” Today’s startups need a well thought-out multi-year and multi-stage game plan of how they will grow with capital, what their requirements will be at multiple stages, how they will grow their customer base, and inevitably deal with churn, which everyone deals with in mobile.

David Beisel (Venrock)- There is still a lot of carnage in mobile. You have to deal with carriers, disparate devices, figure out your revenue model, and further out, deal with your burn rate. The web has an ecosystem but it is not as disparate. The bar is much higher in mobile and you have to address the gray areas. You have to determine how big is the market opportunity and what is your role in it? There are a lot of developers in the Boston area but it’s not appropriate for VCs to invest in them. As a mobile entrepreneur you need to realize that there is more to it than just the money. What do you bring to the table? Seek VCs for their connections, they will be part of your management team. As far as valuations, both inside and outside they are lower than expected. Terms are much more stringent these days.

RG- Yes, in mobile there are now five major ecosystem platforms— Symbian, iPhone, Android, Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, each with their own app store, and to a lesser degree there is still Palm. Couple that with four major carriers— Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile, and a host of lesser carriers, and you have a degree of complexity that is not there on the web. Startups needs to find expertise within their investors. VCs who invest and step back are not the kind of resources you need these days. You need VCs who will roll up their sleeves, take an active role in your company, and you need to give up some ownership for this.

Ryan Moore (GrandBanks Capital)- In 2002, as a VC, you invested in a space to learn about it. Not anymore! There are at least five or six capital players in every different mobile space today. Revenue is spread out. When we look at a space, we look at who will break out of the pack. Who has something to differentiate? We will fund them more aggressively. You also need third party validation, not necessarily just revenue. A startup needs carriers, publishers, and a network to validate it. It is also easier to raise multiple millions of dollars than it is to raise your first $500,000. And an angel round of $500,000 doesn’t get you very far because you have to go back for so much. Professional capital is very expensive, is diluted, and there needs to be an agreement with the entrepreneur on what to do with it. As an entrepreneur, you need to be aware of what you are getting into, that it’s other people’s money! And everything is compressed these days. If you think you need $5 million, you will get $2.5 million. Everything will take five to seven years. Terms will come up in later rounds.

RG- Over the last five years, I have seen many startup pitches, as an executive industry analyst at IDC. Many firms in front of me were both funded and pre-funded. Over time, you started seeing the same solutions or same approaches, trying to solve some of the same fundamental problems, with very little differentiation, other than many be a tweak in a business model here or there (via revenue sharing). Or even worse, startups that were basing their businesses on solving problems that they said that “customers didn’t know they had yet.” In this economy, it is clear that you need to solve a fundamental problem, you need to provide value, show some initial customers, have a well thought out revenue sharing plan (splitting revenue with others such carriers, device vendors, and developers), and also think through how you will scale a distribution model over the next three to five years. The days where your idea is your elevator pitch along with a two year exit strategy are long gone!

Q&A:

Q: Is there focus on value at exit?

Ryan Moore (GrandBanks Capital)- Seventy-five percent of M&A activity occurs at $125 million and below. That’s the ceiling. There is series A optionality. Take the monye, exit in two years, or accelerate and raise a bigger round.

David Beisel (Venrock)- There is compression on exits. There are multiples of public companies as competitors or acquirers. Ultimately it’s a reflection of what happens in public markets.

Q: What makes for a critical revenue mass?

Dev Gandhi (Nexage)- More revenue is tough. The focus is to keep the break-even point the same, be efficient. Less revenue means you have to burn less cash. But what else is measurable? Gaining a large customer base, having big advertising impressions are key, especially when the ad market rebounds.

Dan Smith (Go2 Media)- Solve a need, don’t make one up! Go2 is a disruptor. We provide a local entertainment guide. We’re not just a mobile pure play. We’re building mobile and then expanding to the web, instead of being web and trying to go mobile.

Q: Is a carrier deal required?

Dan Smith (Go2 Media)- The distribution model is changing. Three years ago everyone had to work with the carrier and you had 50 people in front of you. Search is now a viable way to discover and there are the app stores. We all have carriers we deal with, but get to the next one through acquisitions. Carriers are not as key. Quality content, value proposition, and appreciation for application platforms are really important.

Dev Gandhi (Nexage)- Carriers bring huge distribution, but off-deck is growing. Is now a good time to build a mobile only company? This is the best timing to build a platform to adapt rapidly, with radical innovation to other platforms. And you also need to focus beyond North America from day 1!

Q: What are the biggest limiting factors as well as opportunities?

Dan Smith (Go2 Media)- Carrier’s data plans! Usage-based is an obstacle. The level of engagement is 10x with data users, but we need to figure out new business plans. If you build a business without a carrier your bottom line is better!

Ryan Moore (GrandBanks Capital)- Average volumes are hige but revenues are not! So you must be capital efficient to get across the desert today, and you share it at least three ways— with carriers, with ad networks, with the OEM or publisher. And oh, the VC too! Your footprint will get you value. That’s a build to revenue plan.

Q: For mobile advertising, are there any recommended platforms? Is Google it?

Dev Gandhi (Nexage)-There are lots of mobile ad network platforms— Quattro here in Boston, AdMob, Millennium Media. There are like 28 world-wide. At Nexage we connect to them all.

Dan Smith (Go2 Media)- Google will give you revenue per CPM. People will pay a premium around targeted advertising, but the smaller the audience, the lower the CPM. But if you can amass a large local audience you may get $10-$15 per CPM.

Q: How about Android? Things in the cloud? Did we learn anything from Danger?

Dan Smith (Go2 Media)- iPhone changed everything! It set the bar for other devices. Apple showed you don’t have to go through a carrier. The ramifications of that have trickled off to Rim, etc. An iPhone app now may be a step backwards. On PCs, everything had to run on the machines. You went to the browser, you used Ajax, you use SaaS. But it took 25 to 30 years to get there. Mobile will evolve similar but it won’t take 30 years. But we have 50+ environments and need to get down to five or six.

Ryan Moore (GrandBanks Capital)- Well, Android flies next to the BlackBerry! Advertising is based on repeat buys so the sponsorship model works to some degree.

Q: Has the opening of the ecosystems lowered the need to raise so much capital? $5 million instead of $50 million? And the ability of angels?

David Beisel (Venrock)- Yes, we saw it on the web first. But up and running versus building a sustainable business are two different things. From a VC’s perspective, it’s great that entrepreneurs have started companies and have hatched real businesses. Three years ago it was just “ideas.” The house that in India that helped you port to an iPhone is now gone! Angels are highly competitive. When you get a spark you need new capital more quickly. Angels make sense. $500,000 leads you to a VC round. Angels help you figure it out, while VCs are your rocket fuel!

Dev Gandhi (Nexage)- Angels get excited if you can get to the VC round.

Q: There is a high incidence of bootstrapping these days. What drives it?

Dan Smith (Go2 Media)- Mobile is easier! There is a lower barrier to entry now, so it’s driving more bootstrapping. The billing systems are more integrated to the platforms— SMS, WAP, or app stores. People are now paying for an application on mobile, they don’t on the web. You have to look at hybrid models though. Ad only models are still hard to make money on.

Q: Is there a need for more analytics? As a tool to evaluate your effectiveness?

Ryan Moore (GrandBanks Capital)- Validation can happen in an app store, beyond analytics. There are a lot of emerging mobile analytics companies though, like MediaLegs in New York and Localytics here in Boston.

Q: Where is the smart phone opportunity?

Ryan Moore (GrandBanks Capital)- The US, India, China, Russia, and Brazil!

Dev Gandhi (Nexage)- The US leads in smart phones due to the unlimited data plans. Europe is still expensive. US carriers have the cheapest data plans, but the iPhone is a data hog! In India the networks are behind and the data plan is a challenge. In the US we’ve had quick adoption and replacement rates are running 18-24 months on average. Japan and Korea are interesting but they are such small markets now.

I came away from this event, pretty much in agreement with much that was said. There were the usual opinions about the role of the carriers, app stores, and where things were headed. I couldn’t help thinking though about two names that were noticeably missing from the morning’s conversation thought. One was Windows Mobile. After all, the event was being held at Microsoft Labs in Cambridge. The second was Nokia. It was the absence of that name, even during the smart phone and development platform discussions was big, that made me think about how much perception and value still needs to be created. By both firms.
