Statistics show that 70,000 people in Scotland regularly suffer chronic migraines. For Gillian Patterson, Botox has provided her with much-needed relief.

Since being a university student, Gillian has suffered from excruciating migraines which meant she was forced to lay in bed for two or three days with the curtains closed, the lights off, paralysed by pain. The migraines also meant she was unable to hold a conversation or even think.

Speaking about those experiences, Gillian says: “Lots of things go through your head at times like that, such as 'I've had enough. I can't take any more.' But most of the time it was like a mental paralysis.”

Gillian, now 40 from Jordanhill in Glasgow was first diagnosed when she was 20, forcing her to give up her hopes of graduating in French and business computing.

Her first migraine struck after a kidney transplant operation. The World Health Organisation lists migraines as one of the world's 20 most disabling conditions.

Gillian has now been given fresh hope from Botox. Usually associated with anti ageing- the treatment is now being offered as a cure to migraines. Tests showed that patients who suffered from 19.1 days of migraines a month, suffered 8.2 less following Botox treatment.

Gillians first treatment included 33 injections to the head, neck and shoulders, paralysing the muscles so pain signals can't pass to the brain.

Since then, the amount of drugs she needs to control the migraines has been halved and has now undergone her second treatment. Gillian is safe to have three treatments per year.

A new report published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons has shown that the number of cosmetic procedures among men across the pond increased by two per cent last year, compared with 2009.

The report states that more than 1.1 million cosmetic procedures were carried out on males, including both minimally invasive procedures and surgical procedures.

Dr Phillip Haeck, president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, said: "Men are paying more attention to their appearance."

The increase for cosmetic surgery in men is being driven by men in their 50s and 60s. Haeck, commented: "These are really fit people who have paid a lot of attention to keeping their bodies in shape. They're getting a turkey neck which is something exercise won't get rid of. This generation has paid a lot of attention to how they look, and they don't want to grow old gracefully."

Information originally published in the Minneapolis Star Tribune states that Botox has already been successfully used in American dentistry procedures, such as temporomandibular joint (TMJ) complications.

The treatment, most commonly used in the cosmetics industry, is gaining more popularity in the dentistry industry.

Michael Skadron, a Doctor of Dental Surgery has suggested that, because of the rigorous studying of facial muscles that dentists are required to study, they are in a strong position to administer the treatment.

Use of Botox in dental treatments is currently restricted to a state to state basis.

Currently, dentists in the state of Minnesota can freely apply Botox in dental treatments; whilst in states such as California and Nevada, general dentistry professionals are prevented from doing so – allowing only for skilled professionals to undertake the application process.

The rumours follow the 42-year-old's appearance last week in Mexico City, where she was promoting her first fragrance.

Marc Mani, MD, a plastic surgeon based in Beverly Hills said: “Jen has a little more fullness under her eyes which could be from injections.”

Others have agreed.

Chicago-area based surgeon, Peter Geldner, MD added: “In extreme expression, I see a little extra fullness adjacent to her nose that's often a giveaway sign of fillers.

“There are mild contour differences in her lips as well,” he continued.

If the rumours are true, Jen will join best friend, Courtney Cox – who has long admitted to getting Botox treatments – as one of many famous faces to use the treatment.

The advert, filmed in Argentina for butter substitute I Can't Believe It's Not Butter, shows Cattrall looking younger and more wrinkle-free than ever before. According to the Mail Online, while it has been said the effects are due to 'soft lighting and expertly applied make-up', experts disagree.

The 54-year-old told a U.S. newspaper recently: “Enjoying I Can't Believe It's Not Butter is kind of like finding a deliciously gorgeous man, and then discovering he's single.”

In the past she has been candid about her use of Botox saying in an interview with the Sunday Times three years ago: “I think I look my age, but I don't want to be 20 anymore or even 30 or 40.

Besides, I'm too terrified to get any proper work so I've had just little things done. I have a big crease between my eyebrows and I use Botox to get rid of that, but that's kind of it.”

Whatever she has had done, Kim still looks incredibly good for her age and is a great advocate of Botox and its benefits.

According to gazettelive.co.uk, a little girl has become the first in the country to receive Botox as a treatment for cerebral palsy.

Five-year-old Amy Bolton has been receiving Botox injections at University Hospital of North Tees. The Botox has been injected into her calves to relax the muscles with the aim of giving her an improved stance.

Cerebral palsy is an abnormality on the brain which affects posture, movement and co-ordination. Amy walks on tiptoes at the moment but it is hoped that the Botox treatment will help her walk from her heel instead, relieving the pressure on her hips.

Her mum, Joanne Bolton, 35 told the website: “To begin with I thought Botox? - What are you going on about? She is five years old, she has no wrinkles - I said I will have it as well thank you very much!

“But once you understand the theory you can see why it will help and I have total faith in the doctors at North Tees.”

After being discovered as a treatment for cerebral palsy in the 1990's, this is great news for sufferers, with hopes that it will become a more popular treatment for the condition.

More and more 'average men' are turning to cosmetic surgery for enhancement treatments than ever before according to the winnipegfreepress.com.

The figures have suggested that men are not only opting for a little Botox here and a filler there, but actual cosmetic surgery procedures are on the increase.

Statistics released today from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) have shown that male cosmetic procedures are up by 2 per cent.

"I think that it's fair to say that the demographic in cosmetic plastic surgical procedures is changing in a variety of ways," said Dr. Mitchell Brown, a Toronto plastic surgeon. "And I think one of the things that we see is that there are more men that are considering cosmetic plastic surgical procedures."

Last year there was a 14 per cent increase on the number of facelifts performed on men, 11 per cent rise in ear-shaping surgery and 7 per cent in fat-removing liposuction.

In today's society standards of appearance are vitally important for men and women, with more time and money being spent so people can look their best.

According to privatehealth.co.uk, women spend on average each year £2,055 on their appearance. £717 is spent on their bodies, whilst £289 is spent on Botox treatments and creams to help improve their complexion.

In recent years, cosmetic clinics have seen the number enquiries for mole removals significantly rise. This rise is from both men and women looking to gain perfect skin.

Moles are very common. It is generally thought that people with white skin on average have around 30 moles, with some people having up to 400. People are more likely to get a mole removed if it's raised from the surface, catches on clothing or looks odd in any way.

A spokesperson from a UK cosmetic surgery clinic, said: "We are definitely seeing a massive increase in mole removal enquiries this year. We know that men and women are spending more on face and body maintenance, and simple mole removal can be very effective where there is a troublesome mole. We offer mole removal carried out under local anaesthetic as a simple day procedure by our expert cosmetic surgeons, so patients can be assured of a good result."

There is currently an on-going debate on whether alternative practitioners besides doctors and nurses should be allowed to deliver Botox injections and now the debate is stepping up a gear.

The British Association of Cosmetic Doctors has spoken out against the CITA (Cosmetic Treatments and Injectables Association), a new association that has been formed this month, whose purpose is to challenge the Independent Healthcare Advisory Services (IHAS) and its Treatments You Can Trust Register.

Mike Comins, President of the BACD, said: “the BACD has always viewed injectables as medical cosmetic treatments with recognized medical complications.

“Although injectable serious complications are uncommon they can occur. We therefore urge anyone thinking of having these treatments to ask about potential risks and whether the practitioner has the medical expertise and qualifications to manage these risks.”

One-day training events which are currently being run to teach practitioners the correct methods of administering the treatments are not enough training for anyone according to Dr Samantha Gammell, President Elect of the BACD, she said: “None of the major suppliers and manufacturers of cosmetic injectables support the use of their products by non-medically qualified practitioners so why are beauty therapists so adamant that they should be able to use them?

Botulinum Toxin is a prescription only medication and fillers are medical devices, therefore as their name suggests they are fundamentally medical procedures requiring a detailed knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and dermatology together with specialist training in each procedure.”

US celebrity Michaele Salahi has checked out of rehab only to 'check-in' at the nearest cosmetic clinic as she requests a full cosmetic make-over.

The star who has just completed a celebrity rehab stint has said that all the stress and strain in her life is starting to show on her face and wants it sorting out quick sharp.

She said: “Today, I'm really excited.

“I'm meeting the doctor and I'm going to have Botox… a little Juvederm - fill in the fine lines.

"This is congress. This is the White House.”

According to the star none of the cosmetic treatments were painful thanks to the expertise of Dr. Michael Niccole, who performed the procedures.

And as for Salahi, well a little more reality TV could be in-store; she said: “I'd love to do 'Dancing with the Stars.”
