This is our new design with two integrated number plates, one at each side. Both parts are fabricated using an autoclave, this provides a superb quality that you feel when you have the parts in your hands. The XR1 kit default seat and fueltank are built using glass fiber, and we will sell these carbon fiber parts as options.

After showing the BOTT XR1, we received some emails asking if it was possible to mount the front number plate with the two headlights on a Buell XB. Rodrigo from Madrid wanted to go a little bit ahead and he asked us to customize his Buell XB in order to make it look as much as possible as a BOTT XR1, but without making big modifications. This is the result, we named it BOTT XR2. We added a front XR1 numberplate, with the same headlights. Unlike the XR1, here we kept the radiator in its original position. We added a Motogadget Chronoclassic display (in this case Rodrigo wanted the dark edition). Brake master cylinder, clutch levers and electric switches are from ISR, and the throttle is an ACTIVE. The rear number plates are modified ones from a Buell XB12STT. The bike has also a fiberglass single seat, black painted, and a black anodized aluminium sprocket cover. We made a set of small interface cables, so the display, the electric switches and the headlights are connected to the original Buell wiring loom, through our interface cables. In this way it is really easy to install all those elements, without having to cut or weld any cable, and of course it is easy as well to switch back to the original components if it is necessary. We are creating also a XR2 kit, which will consist fundamentally on the front head (the front number plate with the 2 headlighs), and the Motogadget display and ISR buttons as options. We are very pleased with this BOTT XR2 and we want to thank Rodrigo for choosing us to customize his bike!

Although the BOTT XR1 kit is not officially on sale yet, we are building a few “trial production” units which will be sold to customers with high mechanical skills. We want them to assembly their XR1 and give us their feedback to help us to improve our product. The first kit is already built and ready to be shipped to his owner in the United States. In this case the customer wanted the fueltank and the seat painted in glossy black, and the footrests in raw aluminium. The frame and subframe are black powder coated. As you can see we have created a new seat with two number plates, one at each side. The original seat had only one plate at the right side. This new design is closed at the rear, while the previous one was open. The kit has five carbon fiber parts. Both the top fueltank and the seat are fiberglass, although they can be built with carbon fiber as an option. The kit includes a lithium Ballistic battery (much smaller and lighter than the original one), the oil radiator with the oil lines, a Motogadget display, the headlights, and all the bolts necessary to assembly the kit.

Last 14th of February we took profit that all the World Championship Moto2 and Moto3 teams were testing in Valencia (they spent 3 days training there) to organize a small test with Anthony West riding the BOTT XR1 in Cheste circuit. We arranged the test at 5 in the afternoon, once the official IRTA tests were finished. We rented the track for half hour, it wasn’t possible to rent it for more time because there was not enough sunlight. Of course with such a short test the objective was not to break the lap record, or to push the XR1 to the limit. We just wanted Anthony to ride some laps and give us his opinion about the bike behaviour. Anthony made two runs of 5 laps each one. The bike worked perfect again and we didn’t have any problem. Anthony’s comments about the bike were very good, so we went back home very happy one more time. We want to thank Anthony West for testing the BOTT XR1 (he also tested our moto2 bike some time ago). Also to the QMMF (Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation) Team for allowing West to ride our bike. To the track for allowing us to lap once the IRTA tests were finished. To Jaime Olivares for taking these cool action photos. And to Ramon Bellosta for allowing Anthony to ride his beloved bike (and also for all his help, ideas and for his collaboration in this project helping us to making the XR1 come true). In Cheste we had also the guys from Agarra Aire filming again, so in a few weeks we will have another video in which we will give more information about this test, and we will listen Anthony feelings just when he get off the bike.

In Bottpower we have a recurrent conversation theme, which is to build a high performance street superbike (also for the track, of course), with a modern 1000 cc. engine and high level components. A bike that would allow us to take the maximun profit of the electronics we are developing (which are already competing in 2013 World Supersport championship with Gabor Talmacsi). As you probably know, in Bottpower we always have been very interested in alternative front ends, so this is a solution that we also would like to use in our future superbike. Those of you who have been following this blog since the early years will know that 11 years ago I started working on the design and construction of a sport bike with a CBR 954 engine and a “funny front end”, it was called “the Morlaco”. This was a free time project, the bike building was very advanced but at that time I started working on the races as a second job and all my free time went there, so the bike was never completely finished and tested. Later on Bottpower became a small company and we started working on new projects: the moto2, the racing electronics, the XR1, and some more that we will show very soon. Years passed by and the Morlaco did nothing but accumulate dust, disassembled in a corner of our workshop. But some months ago we thought that if we want to build a modern superbike it would be interesting, as a first step, to finish and test the Morlaco. For sure that we can learn a lot of things from it before starting our new project. Moreover, it is important to finish what you start, and the Morlaco is a very interesting bike which deserves to be finished. The bodywork we designed years ago looks now a little bit out of fashion. We take aesthetics very seriously, so the first step has been to design new fibers for the bike (including the airbox and the fueltank). Basically, what you can see in the renders is the original chassis and front end with the new fibers. We added a set of magnesium OZ rims with Brembo discs (the same combination we use in our Moto2). Brake master cylinder and clutch lever are ISR and the display is a Motogadget. We also have added our CR2 electronics module in a hollow at the top of the fueltank. We are very proud of our CR2 so we thought that it would be cool to locate it in a place in which it could be seen. The starting point for this design was a sketch from our friend Carles (he doesn’t want to attract attention, so I won’t mention his surname). We liked it a lot! The black bike of the renders is quite different from the sketch one, because we wanted it to look more as a racer. So we made it more spartan, with “less design”. We also wanted it to have almost no covers, so the airbox and the fueltank are seen. There is no bodywork, only the windscreen and the airbox intake conduits. I can’t talk about the Morlaco without mention Hugo van Waaijen (Dutch designer who lives and works in Germany). Since we started this project in 2002 till now, he has provided hundreds of inputs, ideas and sketches. He is a very talented and passionate designer, an essential part of this project, I am very fortunate having him involved because working with him is a really cool experience. For sure that we will still make changes to this design. The intention of publishing this renders is to have your feedback. What do you think about this redesign of the Morlaco? Do you like it this way or do you think it should look more like the original sketch?

On the 31 of January we tested the XR1 for the very first time. For this test we chose a karting track in Albaida (a small town in the East of Spain), because unlike most kartings, this one is not very slow and it has some fast sections. Several world championship riders come here to practice supermoto. We were very lucky with the weather, we had a sunny day, without any wind and with a spring-like temperature. Ramón Bellosta, the owner of this bike, came to see the complete bike for the first time, and also looking forward to test the bike and check his feelings riding it. Another rider came to push the bike close to its limits. Alex Martinez, a rider with a lot of experience both in Motocross and road racing, came to Albaida. Alex raced World Superstock in 2005 and 2006 (this year he was Kawasaki Italy official rider). Two years ago he also was the first one to test our moto2 bike. We had more people in Albaida. The guys from “Agarra Aire” came to film a short video. Also photographer Kristina Fender came to shoot for Sideburn magazine, which are preparing an article about the XR1. The first one to ride the bike was Ramón. We asked him to take 2 laps slow, just to check that everything was ok. After it, he went back to the track and after 2 laps more his kneesliders were touching the asphalt. Good signal!. He didn’t stop lapping, increasing his pace lap by lap. We had to stop him for lunch. He had a big smile in his face. These were his feelings:“While riding the bike, you easily notice the helpful riding position. The bike geometries, the rake and weight, let you forget about the engine 1.200cc size. You place it wherever you wish, in a quite easy way. The XR-1 is extremely compact, the frame structure and rigidity favor an instinctive turn in. You can face the apex aggressively, but knowing that you can going even further. The engine seems to be built for this bike. You constantly feel its torque, however easily guided by your right hand. This, also shows the great job done on the electronics. This test has exceeded my expectations and the objectives pursued.” After Ramón, Alex rode the bike. He did it in a fast and agressive way from the very beginning. The tyres were screaming in every turn, and in some of them he was going into the corner quite sideways, in a supermoto style. At the chiqane exit his front wheel was always on the air. It was a funny show! We are very satisfied about how this first test came out. We checked that the bike performs really well on this kind of track. We were lapping the whole day and we didn’t have any kind of problem. Next test will be on a bigger and faster track, to check how the XR1 performs on really fast corners.
