Warrior returns with yet another new, well-known singer, this time with the slot being occupied by former Krokus frontman Marc Storace. The years have been kind to him, as he does a pretty good job overall. Musically the style and feel is very similar to the band's past couple of releases, as there is good distortion and energy throughout. Consistent "Warrior" metal, once again.
The chuggy and flowing title track is a top highlight, as is the nonstop "Naked Aggression." "Hypocrite" has a tough attitude, and the majority of the other selections have their strong points as well, with "Love Above All" being a chunky notable.

These guys came out of nowhere striking like thunder and I can say that I was surprised to see this quartet sounding like a slaughterhouse. Relapse is lately investing more on other sounds and less on brutal as fuck bands (at least less than what it did in the past). If you expect experimental Hardcore or Metal sounds, then this band is not even close to what you are searching for.

The Swedish act has been around since 2003 and has only released two demos. It seems that Relapse’s scouting department quickly noticed their talent and "kidnapped" them before any other label does. Their debut album "The Severed Inception" is already out there, waiting for every extreme metalhead to go and buy it!

As I said earlier, their music is not experimental or anything close to it. It is just straight in your face Death/Grind music full of brutality, hyper-technical breaks and tempo that could easily break your neck. Do not even try to headbang at this speed! The only "experimental" thing someone can find in this album are the few "epic" passages the band has placed here and there, something that makes the whole album sound more diverse, as well as manages to make the approximately 34 minutes of this album sound not enough to satisfy the listener’s sick & twisted hunger (that’s why you will press the repeat button several times).

The heavy as fuck production, the clever compositions and the whole ORIGIN meets DECAPITATED vibe is enough to tempt every Death/Grind maniac. You should check these guys out and see that Sweden is not only about melodic Death Metal. The brutality still remains there!

Geist is a German black metal outfit that saw the unholy light in 2005, and with this ‘Galeere’ they come up with their third album. You don’t know them? Well, do not feel ashamed, neither have I, but I think that this will change because of this new album.
I would describe Geist as a typical exponent of German black metal. ‘Galeere’ brings forth a powerful produced album with five lengthy songs, which is certainly not suited for those who prefer it “true and produced down in the bassment”, yet more to the liking of those who prefer technically well executed black metal with lengthy songs full of variation. Vocalist Cypher D. Rex spits out his lyrics, drawing his inspiration from the everlasting human decline, in a grim German way (and not just because of the lyrics), and combined with the arrangements it makes me think of bands like Grabnebelfürsten, Farsot and Fen (just listen to ‘Unter toten Kapitänen’) regarding the atmosphere, just a bit more straight forward.

It is quite refreshing to hear a band which does not follow the Nordic acts too much (regarding the way it is brought, I can’t tell you about the influences when it comes down to the roots) and just puts down a typical German sound. Not too extreme, yet with enough intensity to be seen as black metal (no way that you can call this avant-garde). Minor influences from other genres enrich the songs on this well produced ‘Galeere’ and to those who don’t mind the label “intelligent” black metal yet who also want it to rage, I would suggest to try this ‘Galeere’ out.

ASHENT were formed in 2002 in Italy. After releasing a demo in 2003, their debut full-length, "Flaws Of Elation" arrived on the scene. "Deconstructive" is their second release, and shows the band gaining in maturity and evolving in a positive direction.

The sound of this album is generally progressive Metal, although there are also smaller influences from Power Metal and classic Metal; one can even hear a slight thrash and Goth influence in their sound. Even though ASHENT is from Italy, they thankfully avoid the over-the-top cheesiness of bands like RHAPSODY OF FIRE. The focus throughout the album is on melody, whether it is from vocalist Steve Braun or through the guitar and the keyboards. However, the band does not forget to add some rhythmic crunch through drums and guitar riffs that involve more than hitting the same note throughout the song. The band as a whole is very talented, and they are not afraid to show it, although they rarely go into the realm of self-indulgence.

One thing that the listener will notice is how short the song lengths are, considering that they are a prog Metal band. This works to their advantage, however, because they keep the songs short and concise and avoid dragging the songs with chorus repetition and endless soloing. The first single, "Imperfect" does a fine job of introducing anyone unfamiliar with ASHENT to their sound. The guitars and keyboards switch back and forth between the lead roles but neither overpowers the other and they actually work quite well together. "Sinking Beneath" is the perfect opener and "Starlinked Innerness" does a good job serving as the album’s only epic song.

"Deconstructive" is surprisingly consistent throughout; a few songs are weaker than others but I could listen to this album from start to finish. The only real negative aspect to the album is how awful and cheesy the lyrics are, but thankfully they rarely get in the way of the excellent music. ASHENT is one of the best Prog/Power bands coming out of Italy today, I would highly advise checking them out.

What’s the case with Sweden, anyway? You can’t get enough of good Metal music delivered by Swedish bands the last...dunno...30 years!?!? IN SOLITUDE is another example of how you can release classic Metal music without being accused as ’copycat’ or ’retrolust’. Had bought their "Hidden Dangers" 7" single a year ago or so, swallowed their notable 2-track offering and waited eagerly for the debut assault. Here it is, finally: "In Solitude" definitely is a good proposal to remember what was the spine of Metal music years ago. Let’s turn some hell on.

The 7" single presented a first draft picture of IN SOLITUDE’s beliefs. Vintage European Heavy Metal with enough of reference to MERCYFUL FATE (mainly), GLORY BELLS, OVERDRIVE and PARASITE, plus BLACK SABBATH and the ’dark’ side of the NWOBHM movement (WITCHFYNDE, ANGEL WITCH etc). "Kathedral" is again featured in this debut album’s tracklist, building up a set of eight (in total) songs that shall make you moan if the above ’reference list’ sparkled your interest. "The longer the writing process took, the darker the songs got. We ended up with a perfect mix of catchy old Heavy Metal and pure hell", drummer Uno Bruniusson says in a Press release, and this comment can sum it up to the whole vibe of "In Solitude".

Pelle Ahman does sing both high-pitched and normal, he gets ’evil’ at times and does a good job in narrating in the songs when needed. A couple of growls do fit in the songs’ scope, plus he sounds ominous enough in the mix, resulting in constructing a persona bringing the early days of King Diamond to mind, but in no way letting loose comparison thoughts; hence, mission accomplished. The music itself overlaps such a contrast, with the guitars assembling an immense wall of riffs and leads (many dual ones, too) while the rhythm section is as traditional as possible giving backing to the guitars themes to be unveiled in pure metallic dignity and gloom.

The production of the album fits like a glove to your old-school European needs, bringing on enough of dark, evil and mystique atmosphere. Would not label anything here as ’Epic Doom Metal’, but fans of bands like e.g. CANDLEMASS and GRAND MAGUS shall take the chance and listen to this album, too, since there is some common fire crossing paths. Still, the base for songs like e.g. "Witches Sabbath", "Kathedral" and "Faceless Mistress" is – again mentioned – the legacy of MERCYFUL FATE and the 80s Swedish Metal scene (linking to the NWOBHM magic); that also reminds me that the chorus melodies here are outstanding, carrying this unique Swedish tradition.

Initially out on LP (via High Roller Records) a couple of months ago, "In Solitude" is now unleashed on CD format via Pure Steel Records and I’m already looking forward to watch the Uppsala-based quintet at Keep It True XII festival late next month. The songs must be killers performed live.

Do not miss the chance to purchase this top-class traditional Metal album, I’d strongly recommend. IN SOLITUDE deserves a big transaction with the Metal fans keeping the 80s flame.

Bump up Them! in your Netflix queue because Texas’ leading purveyors of arthropod grind are back another crusty slab of six legged metal goodness.
Insect Warfare leave the boundary pushing to someone else on their full length debut, World Extermination, instead ripping out 22 minutes of prime Earache style grind.
From the squalls of guitar that kick off the disc, this is a hot stepping slab of relentless insect grind. Unlike fellow Texans Kills the Client, Insect Warfare don’t cut their delicious chocolately grind with caramel sludge. The most you can hope for area few scattered peanuts of punk beat (“Dead Inside,” “Human Trafficking”). (This review has been brought to you by Snickers. Never write while hungry, kids.)
Grind lives and dies by its energetic production, and World Extermination sounds like it could have been recorded by a young Scott Burns, with a tighter, cleaner sound than Insect Warfare’s past EPs, which had more of a blown out sound. Think Utopia Banished spooning World Downfall this time instead of Extreme Conditions Demand Extreme Responses giving Reek of Putrefaction a reach around.
Even the artwork radiates that throwback vibe: a black and white drawing of Old Grim getting all Godzilla on an unnamed metropolis with the assistance of his giant bug menagerie. Sure it looks like Jeff Walker’s design for the Scum cover, but who’s gonna quibble about 100 percent originality when you’re being warfared on by monstrous insects?

Being such a young death metal band, I am surprised to hear such a good record from Ignominious Incarceration. The first two songs are reasonable and have the listener's attention with a slightly more blackened death metal riff in opener "Avarice" and the technical aggression of "Deeds of Days Long Gone". However, it's not until "Elegance in Aggression" that these Brits show their stuff with a chugging riff that leads on to quite a memorable four minute ordeal of melody driven death metal. Their blending of fast and slow tempos, melody and devastating power is what sets them above other new death metal acts. With songs such as "Solitude" to rip through crowds and a dual guitar attack in songs like "Dynasty Damnation", there is surely no stopping Ignominious Incarceration if they set their minds to carry on evolving their sound while maintaining the crisp production that really sustains the sound of "Of Winter Born".

Cool thrash similar to another British band- Xentrix; these guys are perhaps more ambitious, with longer songs and more twists. The singer has a powerful voice which, when going for the higher registers, will remind you of Messiah Marcolin. The music is more effective in the shorter tracks which are nice little thrash gems of the mid-paced variety; a really good band from the British metal underground.

Tragedy hits some bands harder than others. The death-toll in Cali-based Insanity went up to 2 band members on 14th November 2007 when Insanity´s longtime drummer Bud Mills passed away, suffering from esophagal cancer (stage 4). According to the band´s Myspace site, they are luckily getting back to their feet again, slowly but surely anyway.

CHRONICLES OF THE CURSED by Insanity, is the most luxurious product from a rising Chinese underground metal label AreaDeath Productions / Xmusick League; a 2-CD digibook compilation featuring Insanity´s material from 1985-94 - this including their impossible-to-find DEATH AFTER DEATH album (originally released on M.B.R. Records in 1994), a 4-song re-mastered 8-track recording, the band´s most classic 3-track demo from 1985, many live + rehearsal songs, etc. - basically covering the band´s entire catalog perfectly. Plus, this 36-page hard cover digibook comes with liner notes (written by Exhumed´s Matt Harvey and Napalm Death´s Barney), a long and in-depth interview of Insanity vocalist & guitarist Dave Gorsuch, lyrics written both in English and Chinese - and all this added with tons of killer photos from the band´s past years, some of them being really rare and probably even never published before prior to this fantastic release.

But that´s enough about what this release contains and how it overall looks. What about Insanity´s music then, I am already hearing you whining anxiously? What?! You haven´t heard of Insanity before? Are you kidding me? Oh my, shame on you! Well, let me just say that when Insanity started back in 1985, they were one of the most relentless, vicious and aggressive death/thrash metal bands on the face of the earth. No kidding! In fact, I would say they were right there with bands like Possessed, Hellwitch, Slayer, Exodus, etc. – playing a high-velocity death/thrash metal with such intensity and aggression that absolutely dropped some jaws wide open. The music was pure brilliance in terms of their very well executed and skilfully played songs that got many people to bow in front of them in sheer amazement. Songs like “Blood for Blood”, “Ultimate Death”, “Fire Death Fate” and many other Insanity songs became instant classic numbers among their fans that they always demanded Insanity to play live. For those who never got an opportunity to see the band live, I think it was a very good call from the band to include some of that live material for this luxury compilation CD, just giving a taste of how tight and aggressive they already were when playing live shows back in the day. The sound quality of those live tunes varies quite a lot, but that´s only a minor point because Insanity truly slaughtered live.

However, much like Hellwitch from Florida, US, Insanity never got a chance to take those few, last important steps to bring them to the same league as bands like Possessed or Exodus, but they always stayed more or less as a relatively unknown underground force that somehow missed all opportunities to bring things to the next level. Signing a deal with the German M.B.R. Records wasn´t probably one of their best choices they have made in their whole career, but at least they got their debut album released eventually unlike many of their fellow bands from those days.

CHRONICLES OF THE CURSED is nothing but a mandatory package for every Insanity fan – and actually for everyone else for that matter, who can still appreciate the past times of some of these finest and most talented underground metal bands that quite never made it big for themselves, but whose destiny was to stay as an underground act for their entire lifespan. Get this while you still can because this is limited to 1000 copies only – and probably a very limited die-hard version (a fancy-looking box, limited to 200 copies; including also an Insanity patch, a longsleeve shirt and a button) is already sold out.

This band was formed by Ron Mcgovney after he left Metallica. Unfortunately, unlike Dave Mustaine, he couldn't break it big despite the recruitment of the drum wizard Gene Hoglan and Katon W. Depena from Hirax on vocals. The style is actually not too distant from Hirax consisting of short speed/thrash outbursts, but is a bit more technical and aggressive. Looked like a beginning of a successful career, but...

A melodic blend of thrash/crossover and classic heavy metal; has its similarities to Suicidal Tendencies, but is far inferior. Later the guys changed their name to Uncle Slam, and started playing some really cool thrash/crossover with a much sharper edge.
