David Bowie's artistry exceeded his music, his love for fashion with a flare for flamboyance transformed him into an icon he was. Really, it was through his choices in clothing that I came to know who he was. Bowie's fierce gender fluidity transversed styles, trends and eras, whilst his bending of gender normatives was more for stage performances, it has inspired and into transcended to everyday-wear that is not only about comfort but fearless self-expression.

SIMON & MARY AW15

A few week ago while attending to my laundry, my hat found itself in the turbo drum for 45 minutes of a wash, a rinse and a spin, needless to say: all shape and character were lost. With various attempts in getting the hat to it's original crown yielding no desired outcome, I lost hope.

The Simon & Mary AW15 collection could not have dropped at more suitable time. Entitled Wonky, the duo introduces their first rage of crushable felt hats, whether you bend, twist or fold them; the bad boy will always regain their pure pressed crown. The AW15 range is available from the May 1st in the basic colours, also in the new chambray finish.

The hat has arguably became the most cognate accessory one could own. Whether you favour the trilby, bowler or wide brim fedora, a hat makes for an easy way to give character to your look. Photographer: Zander Opperman and Styling Jana + Koos.

LUMINANCE

Oscar de la Renta once said something in the lines of "I like light, color, luminosity. I like things full of color and vibrant", a quote that best defines the current offering from Caylin Wilsnach. Dubbed Luminance, the collection draws inspiration from the nature of visible light with elements of futuristic elements.

The futuristic appeal came from the use of opaque plastic or rather acrylic. I created pleats by hand stitching on the skirt. I also used reflective vinyl transfer printing on the garments which served both a futuristic purpose and tied in with the light concept.

Caylin Wilsnach, is a recent graduate from the Cape Town College of Fashion and was a AFI fastrack finalist. The collection was photographed by Cassandra Collett and modelled Ernania from Boss Models.

SALON 58 x PICHULIK

Salon 58 and PICHULIK joined efforts to celebrate the disposition of seven astonishing South African women. Jackie Burger, Anet Pienaar Vosloo, Mellissa Muringani, Lindiwe Suttle, Juanita Daniel, Doreen de Waal and Jenna Bruwer are the women whose individuality served as inspiration for the collaboration. A hallmark of Pichulik’s designs is her ability to bring the sacred and the meaningful to ornamentation. Similarly, photographer Kristin-Lee Moolman referenced religious iconography to create the series of bold portraits exhibited at the Salon 58.

A woman’s clothing and accessories reveal a lot about her and we conceptualized these portraits to tell their stories in a bold new way. Earrings are extremely intimate, more so than other types of jewellery, as they gently brush the neck. They frame the face and it was an honour to be able to create designs for such bold, brave and beautiful faces

This collaboration is the latest in a series of firsts for Pichulik this year. In January she was named as a finalist in Vogue Italia’s Scouting for Africa project. This was followed by an invitation to appear in the Marie Claire #MCNaked 2015 issue (out now) in support of Blow The Whistle, an initiative that campaigns against rape.

LUKHANYO MDINGI FW15 LOOKBOOK

I am always fascinated by the resurgence of minimalism, particularly taking into account that the trend never went away completely; however Lukhanyo Mdingi's AW15 collection redefines the nature of minimalism we have often encountered. Cleped "Macramé", the collection plays around with the use of different textures and fabrication yet maintaining the minimal aesthetic that’s based on creating strong and distinct pieces we have came to know. The range also draws influences from the Arabic knotting technique.

SOUTH AFRICAN MENSWEAR WEEK

06 days, 21 hours, 50 minutes and 31 seconds, the count down to the first South African Menswear week continues and I am oh-so bursting with excitement. The platform will showcase collection over 25 menswear designer, from design heavy-weights such as Craig Port and CSquared to young emerging designer such as Rich Mnisi and Lukhanyo Mdingi.

South African Menswear Week will launch on Thursday 5th to Saturday 7th February 2015 and features the collections of over 25 leading menswear designers in Africa. They plan on having this become a biannual event, with February and July showcasing the Autumn/Winter (AW15) and Spring/Summer (SS15) collections respectively. Having our own menswear week was created to celebrate the creative and commercial importance of South Africa and Africa’s menswear industry. More importantly, South African Menswear Week will work alongside the designers to develop business and profiling opportunities, according to their release, helping African talent to build brands and labels, increase exposure, which supports sales and assists in expanding business by creating job employment.

There is something I find rather vain yet charming about a woman who incorporate jewellery in her everyday ensemble. If there above shapeshifters collection by Black Betty is anything to go by, then one does not need an ensemble to exude charm, more especially if the refinery is dear to you.

Inspired by the notion of African Geometry, found in everything from the the cities’ overarching skyscrapers, Cape-fold mountains and interesting graphic patterns of the continent’s design language, the Shapeshifter Range is an expression of this fertile land and its evolving shapes. These silhouettes have been interpreted into angular-designed earrings, necklaces, rings and pendants using diamonds and black and gold rhodium plated silver. As the name suggests, although these facets of the city, it’s natural surrounds and textured products seemed fixed to the naked eye, they are continuously growing and changing and as the ages and decades pass so too does their energy and the way they are perceived, reminding us to do the same.

SELFI SS15 LOOKBOOK

I have came to know Selfi for the youthful minimalism that is sometimes sharp with clean folds, a celebration of thy self that is not only wearable but timeless.

Selfi makes a transition away from muted tones for its Spring/Summer 15 with the use of bold colors and print. A somewhat androgynous collection that draws influences from the 90's with tailored shirts and oversized shift dresses. The cut and folds of the garments create a windswept the illusion. Taking inspiration from 1920s abstract expressionism, collage art and the work of late Spanish painter and sculptor, Joan Miró, Selfi presents a playful, dreamlike state of mind by incorporating abstract elements from nature. I lead a very active lifestyle; well, relatively active. Residing within close proximity to work means, I can walk to and from the office on most occasions which I find to be rather difficult in my slip-ons or moccasins . Also, working in a traditional office environment, injecting a bit of casual spirit in your formal attire with a per of sneaks can be greatly frowned upon. That's why I love the direction Nike has taken with the new Air Max, they are one way of adding the casual spirit into your office wear and get away with it.

I love the all black colourway with an added crocodile patent leather ornament in the paneling and upper with a sleek nubuck finish. The sneaks are said to be available in South Africa this December at selected Sportscene outlets. The croc pack is only available for women; so, here to hoping sportscene will cater for women with size 8 feet.

Anisa Mpungwe, designer of Loin Cloth and Ashes continues her journey with MRP with yet another collaboration. The collection plays with visual that draw influences from traditional Africa striking prints in bold and bright hues with Nigeria being a major focus.

I recently travelled through Africa where I was seduced by the energy of African cities. During my travels, I attended a wedding in Nigeria where I noticed how people embrace colour. They weren't afraid to be loud and expressive, both vocally and in dress! I also enjoyed how people followed current fashion trends while staying true to their African roots.

I absolutely love the energetic print juxtaposition in straight and structured cuts yet still conscious about feminine form. The range is available at selected MRP stores and online here.

#SAFW | ANMARI HONIBALL

So here a thing, I have never gave much heed to South African Fashion Week (SAFW) and one of the prime reasons is that; I was never afforded time to be present at the event (~~Likewise MBFWJ and MBFWA~~). The state of ennui that I have succumbed, has lead me to the programme which accelerated my jaws to the floor at terminal velocity by the unfamiliarity of designers who showcasing. Do not get me wrong, I have a close association with most of the designers on the programme ( and by close association I mean; I can familiarise the name from a bar of soap) and one such designer that I have a close association with is Anmari Honiball.

I was initially introduced to Anmari Honiball in 2012 when she was selected as a finalist for the ELLE NEW RISING STAR design awards and have grown to appreciate the beauty underlined in her work ever-since. The AW15 collection plays with colour (Think: red, pink and blues) in a childlike manner. I am absolutely obsessed with the use of bright play dough-like, amoeba shaped collage-esque detailing, especially on the black black drop,

Amazing local jewellery brand Pichulik freshly launched their S/S15 Lookbook. Habitually drawing influences from the rich, vibrant and eclectic continent of Africa, the brand remains true to this aesthetic while the delicate craftsmanship progresses further North and the Middle East.

Baraka is the beneficent force from god that flows through the physical and spiritual spheres as prosperity, protection and happiness. This collaborative capsule collection is informed by Islamic Mailian architecture of North Africa and the garb of Islamic tribes that wander these lands.

DKNY celebrates the city and the women who reside in it, as part of the new fragrance MYNY. As part of the festivities Elle Magazine South Africa has asked young, up and coming female photogs to translate what puts their city on a global creative map through visual narrative. One such creative is fully time photog and my favourite blogger Amy Scheepers.

I find that living in a city like Cape Town affects your way of dressing in so many ways. The biggest way, in my opinion, is how inspired you always are by the people around you, the city’s beautiful architecture, busy schedules, and general creativity. How can you not take it all in and come out with a sense of style that is uniquely you? I photographed 5 women who not only have very distinct and different styles, but are also all amazing creatives and inspiring people. To go alongside their image I deconstructed their outfits into a few key pieces and ‘dressed the city.

Garwood and Grace is the up-and-coming young designer swimwear label that has until now been known to just a handful of style, sun and beach loving Capetonians. The s/s14 range of tailored, quality swim shorts has a distinct St. Tropez just- stepped-off-my-yacht appeal, which is not surprising given founding partner Tiphaine Alston’s credentials: a BA Hons from the UK’s Ravensbourne College, a Masters at the Royal College of Art in London and work experience and commissions from Burberry, Alexander McQueen, Roksanda Ilincic and Victoria’s Secret. But why men’s swimwear? Alston explains:

When Simon, my husband and “the business brain behind the brand”, and I moved to Cape Town two years ago, we noticed that most men are wearing baggy, unflattering board shorts. As a result, Garwood & Grace came about because I wanted to introduce a tailored, European sensibility to South Africa’s beaches with swim shorts that will be equally at home at a beach bar or restaurant.

The Summer 2014 prints were inspired by plant textures found in and around Cape Town, by the indigenous fauna found in the North of the country and by rock art observed in the mountain and nature of Cederberg. Shop the collection online here.
