The other night I got to lead some worship @ Emanate in Franklin, TN with some friends including the lovely Jessie Parker (keys and vocals), the ridiculously vibey Josh Parsons (electric guitar), his groove-tastic brother Jesse Parsons (drums), and mr. solid and a rock Marcus Hendrickson (bass). The always-spot-on mixing man in the back was Justin Burns in case we forget how he makes us all sound better than we are. It was a beautiful night for all of us. Our goal really on these nights at Emanate has very little to do with performance or being the coolest/slickest/smoothest worship band on the planet with perfect transitions. Basically, in the most genuine way we know how, we try as a group of friends and worshippers to run as far into God's heart and goodness as we can. Whether that means we play 3 songs for an hour, or we make up songs for 15 minutes, or we don't play any songs at all and let the worship breathe, it's all the same goal: to love God and be loved by Him. We hope you enjoy the night as much as we did, but regardless.. we hope you will take 2012 as a year of discovering and rediscovering just how loved you are by the kindness man who ever walked the earth - Jesus of Nazareth, son of Joseph, son of God.

(*I just noticed as I was listening back and being blessed by the night that a female harmony comes in on the top of Jessie's voice for the word "stronger" in the phrase "your love is stronger, stronger" at 18:37 (min:sec) into the set... the craziest thing is that I'm the only other one in the room with a vocal mic, and I definitely was NOT the one singing that... hahaha luv it!! By the way, the first song was a John Mark McMillan song called "Dress Us Up" on his album called "The Medicine." Go buy it here: http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/the-medicine/id379151208!!)

Video clip @ The Jam in Nashville, TN 12.03.11..

My buddy Albert Kiteck (the man behind the iPhone 4S) tried his best to phase us with his up close videoing from a week ago at a gig, but to no avail! This is a little clip of us (Trent Swartzentruber, Josh Parsons, and Jesse Parsons) playing "The Song of Moses" @ The Jam Coffee Coffee House here in Nashville, TN for a Mercy 29 fundraiser. I got a chance to sit down with the founder, Lyle Phillips, the other day over lunch and heard the whole back story behind their ministry. It was amazing to hear how it all started, progressed, and to where they are today in housing over 400 kids in Africa and India, saving them from child prostitution. The night of music which included other friends Gabby DiPace, Steph Jones, and Lexi Adams was a raving success with over $500 raised for Mercy 29, mostly thru the donations of a few poor 20-somethings (now that's a pretty big deal!). For more info on Mercy 29 and/or to donate check out: http://mercy29.org. Thank you to Bethany Newton for opening up her coffee house and to everyone else who made the night a success.

Worship @ Emanate 11.28.11..

Here's a little update on what I've been up to. My friends (Josh Parsons - electric, Trent Swartzentruber - bass, Mike Wessner - organ, Jesse Parsons - drums) and I led some worship at Grace Center's Monday night young adult service called Emanate last night in Franklin, TN. The night was an absolute blast with some great moments... it's too bad the webstream went off line a bit and the whole middle part of the worship set was lost. Either way here is the first song we did which I wrote with my friend Anthony Skinner called "What If All You Need Is Love." I think you can also track down the last part of the service on their Ustream page, but by that point my voice was hashed/tired, and I kept singing outta tune [don't you love the typical musician disclaimers...]. Anyway, hope y'all are blessed in this holiday season. Enjoy and let me know what ya think!

Things I LOVED:
1. The artwork and cover.
2. Writing style - conversational,
3. Layout of text and thought.
4. How Rob explains that our concept of God directly relates to how we invest our life here and now
5. How important it is and the urgency to respond to the love of God in the here and now even though God will continually pursue us with His love. Our quality of life here and in the age to come will be directly related to whether we said yes to His love or not, with differing consequences.
6. His unique, fresh perspective on the gospel presented in a way that pressed past tired familiarity and religiosity.
7. His quest for truth, and a lack of a religious spirit.
8. His quest to help redefine Christianity in how it's expressed by believers and understood by the world.
9. His call to be those who release the kingdom of heaven now (not just escape to it when we die): to relieve suffering, to fight against injustice, to spend your life fruitfully building that which will endure thru the fire of eternity, where each man's work is tested and tried.
10. How Christianity is so much less about getting into heaven or escaping hell with a certain prayer you need to say and more about a life lived well, or not lived well.
11. His perspective on the older and younger son in Luke 15, and the call to believing the Father's story about you rather than your own... both your goodness and badness can separate you from the love of God. It cannot be earned. It can only be received and trusted in or rejected, but it's still always there.
12. His outside the box perspective.
13. He unapologetically talked about Jesus being the only way to the Father but didn't limit it in a western church mindset.
14. His call to lose your life so you can find it.
15. How you may get more opportunities down the road to respond to the love of God, but how you respond to the ones you're given right now is vitally important and matter more than we can begin to imagine for our quality of life both on earth and in the age to come. There's a reality that Jesus talked about in missing out on rewards, celebrations, and opportunities for greater pleasure in God and in His Kingdom.
16. Trusting God's love.
17. Jesus does call us to repent, to have our minds and hearts transformed so that we see everything differently.
18. The idea that sin and injustice actually goes punished/corrected and won't be let in to the eternal city is amazing. Nothing that defiles will be let in to the city, but at the same time the gates are never shut.
19. Interesting idea: "eternal punishment" in Greek is "aion of kolazo" which can possibly be translated "a period of pruning", "an intense experience of correction" (Matthew 25)
20. Interesting thought (whether I agree with it or not I don't know): The possibility that the love of God is so powerful that it could continually pursue people even in hell after death, softening even the hardest heart to turn and eventually say yes to God.
21. That in the end God will never overstep the bounds of love to violate or manipulate our freewill, and that He graciously gives us what we desire, even if that desire is hell.

Things I DIDN'T love as much:
1. Presenting verses a bit out of context while lacking the exact scripture reference in parenthesis.
2. Not making a lot of clear this is true or this is not true claims.
3. A writing style that made it a bit difficult to understand what he was actually saying - sometimes presenting ideas that other people hold to but conveying it in a way where it takes a bit of detective work to understand whether he is referring to a conclusion he has come to or still laying out the groundwork for presenting a case/argument.
4. Not presenting a full case on hell, where all the scriptures were referenced and how he limited all the references to allegorical, metaphorical interpretation. The case for his argument about what hell is or is not was weak.
5. His quick, slightly obscure reference about Satan (leaving room to possibly imply that he's not necessarily a real being).

Final observations:
1. I like Rob Bell and I'm glad he's a part of the body of Christ.
2. Rob Bell's strength is not necessarily as a line-by-line teacher, but as a thinker and philosopher.

Last Letter Artist Series: Brady Toops "Lift Your Eyes"

After a long drive from Franklin, TN the day before, this ended up being a great night with some new friends. I played some tunes, we worshiped, shared stories, and enjoyed some great fellowship. Even though I played alone here in the Sullivant home, it was a killer time... Thanks Amira for helping set up this night!!

House Tour #1 (CD Release Night) 3.1.2011

This begins my video blogging updates of the House - House Tour... It's been amazing!! I'm currently a bit over half way through and am just now getting around to posting some updates, because of how slammed I've been the last month playing, traveling, speaking, playing, driving, sleeping, playing, sleeping some more and playing. This first night at "The Firehouse" - Grace Center's Youth building in Franklin, TN on 3.1.2011 was incredible. Fifty of my Franklin/Nashville, TN friends packed into a little intimate room with dim lighting and candles up front. Anthony Skinner and his wife Mary Keith graced the stage with me as we played the tunes from the record and worshiped together. Josh Parsons also killed it on the electric guitar the whole night. I was so blessed to be a part of it, and want to throw out a special thank you to Ryan Wegenast for organizing the whole experience and making it happen - a great way to begin the tour!! Here's a bit of an update and info about the upcoming house tour...

I'm currently finishing up my new ALBUM here in Franklin, TN and starting to put together all the details for a 'House Tour' in March and April (possibly part of May too). The tour won't be limited to just living rooms, (there will be churches, youth groups, and college groups as well) but I want schedule in as many houses as possible. The reason is that in my experience doing this, there's nothing quite like packing in 30-75 friends, family, and neighbors into a living room to experiencing God together. My goal is to schedule in 50 house shows in 2 months! And we've already got about 20 spots lined up - spanning a number of states including TX, OK, AR, TN, GA, MO, MN, and ND.

DETAILS:
What will it look like?
1) 6:30-7pm start, last about 1.5 hours (probably 2 hours w/ everyone showing up and leaving)
2) Any night of the week (specific nights will be determined when final schedule is all put together)
3) Me and probably an electric guitar player (still to be finalized)
4) I'll have a small portable sound system that's perfect for these settings; quick & easy to set up
5) We'll play my new tunes, share stories, do some worship.. every house will be different!
6) Lastly, we'll take up a free-will offering to help us cover the expenses of the tour (the new ALBUM will be available for sale as well!).

What is required of you?
1) A decent sized living room (or other room in your house)
2) Invite 30-75 of your closest family, friends, and neighbors (Facebook Event invites work great for this!)
3) Provide or help us find a place to sleep for me and friend (male)

So basically, if you're interested in hosting a worship/concert/story night at your house contact me via email at: booking@bradytoops.com. Include your contact info (email & phone), city/state, and basic location set up (ex. house living room can fit 'x' amount of people). If you want to inquire about us playing/speaking at your church or other ministry, include that as well. Thanks and I can't wait to see you all!! God Bless!!

1. Dang I hate when I can't fall asleep.
2. I wonder why I can't sleep.
3. Probably cuz I took an hour nap today at 430pm.
4. If God is real, then I want to see him...
5. Why can't I see Him?
6. It only makes sense that I could see Him, if He's real of course.
7. God I want to see you.
8. Why am I nervous?
9. Why do I feel like I have to hurry up and fall asleep.
10. What if I don't fall asleep?
11. I would be really tired tomorrow.
12. Its Thanksgiving tomorrow. It doesn't matter if I'm tired, the turkey will make me tired either way.
13. I wonder if my mom will say Happy Thanksgiving tomorrow, like she says "Merry Christmas" on Christmas Day
14. Are there going to be stockings with presents tomorrow?
15. C'mon of course I'm going to fall asleep.
16. Ugh...
17. I wonder if I have control.
18. How much control do I really have?
19. Sometimes I try things that don't work out.
20. Is that because God's in control?
21. Or maybe it's cuz I prayed for Him to lead me in the way everlasting.
22. Does that mean I'm in control or He's in control?
23. This is too complicated; I probably won't write a blog about it tomorrow.
24. Ugh, I wish I had my own pillow. This one is too fat.
25. Maybe I can't sleep cuz I don't have my pillow. Its in Franklin, TN.
26. I wonder if I'll need to sleep on that same pillow the rest of my life.
27. I really like my own pillow, cuz its flat.
28. My mom thinks its gross, cuz its old.
29. I wash it sometimes...
30. Hmmmm... time to fall asleep.

Johnny Cash quotes...

"You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space."

[in 2002, on his beloved brother Jack, who died in 1943 when Johnny was 11.]: "There`s never been two months gone by that I haven`t dreamed about him. He`s tried to help turn me to the way of life."
"After about three lessons the voice teacher said, 'Don`t take voice lessons. Do it your way.'"

"I am not a Christian artist, I am an artist who is a Christian."

"I start a lot more songs than I finish, because I realize when I get into them, they`re no good. I don`t throw them away, I just put them away, store them, get them out of sight."

The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.”

"My days were more exciting when I was penniless and had to forage around for my next meal, I've decided that I'm going to live this life for some time to come. The freedom and simple beauty of it is just too good to pass up. One day I'll get back to you, Wayne, and repay some of your kindness."

I think I'll live like this... ;-)

personal update from Nashville and Q&A...

To give you all the latest on what's been going down with, I've been in Franklin, TN the last week prepping for the recording process of my new album which will begin in October. This week has been amazing working with Anthony Skinner and connecting with some other cool guys in the music industry. I'm making some awesome relationships, getting great advice, and hearing lots of positive feedback on my SINGLE: "Can't Stop Lovin'"! I also just did a little Q&A with the guys at Kanakuk (the camp I led worship at this past summer) and figured I'd post it for you guys.
Q: What position did you play for baseball?
A: I was a catcher.

Q: What is an odd fact that no one would know about you?
A: I’m a triplet... and I like to think I've never had a real job in my life (it's not really true, but kind of). 29 years - trying to keep the streak alive!! ;-)

Q: Favorite food?
A: “Bro…pizza. Pepperoni pizza. I could eat it every day of my whole life.

Q: Favorite hobby or pastime?
A: “It’s kind of geeky but disc golf. My friends and I named it either "dolf" (short for disc-golf) or "frolf" (short for frisbee-golf).” Also I love to read, hang out with my family, and listen to new creative music.

Q: What’s your great achievement either sports or otherwise?
A: “My greatest achievement is believing that God loves me, that He actually enjoys me, and surrendering more and more to that reality.”

Q: Where’s your favorite place that you have traveled?
A: “Honestly for me it’s less about the place and more about the people. There are so many places that have people that feel like family to me. These places include California, Nashville, TN, Arkansas, Fargo, ND, Minnesota and of course Lampe, MO!”

Q: When and what got you started in music?
A: I started singing as a little kid. My parents have always loved music. I actually started playing the guitar my freshman year of college and by my sophomore or junior year I was writing songs. They weren’t very good at first but everyone's gotta start somewhere!! I think the biggest key for me in music and songwriting has been finding my own sound, being cool with it, rather than attempting to copy someone else's vibe.

Q: Favorite memory from K-2 this summer?
A: Worship at K-Life. Watching what Joe's deer was going to do next on stage. All the kids at the dock that thought I looked and sounded like Jack Johnson. Sleeping outside on the dock, chilling with the other Dock Daddies. And of course all the awesome people at Kanakuk I got to do life with this past summer.

Q: Why did you choose Arkansas?
A: 1) Opportunity to play baseball in the SEC 2) they gave me an academic full ride to go there, and 3) when I took a visit, I just knew. I had the coolest sense of peace about it - that that's what God had for me.

Q: What’s next?
A: I'm gonna keep making music, keep writing songs, and keep leading worship as many places as possible!! I love touching God in the place of worship and inspiring others to love and be loved by Him. I'm also in the midst of recording a new record in Franklin, TN with all my new tunes on it. I can't wait for it to come out!! It'll have a great combination of fun, upbeat worship songs, as well as old school gospel hymns that carry a bit of a folk vibe. Be on the look out for it coming out around the end of 2010/beginning of 2011!

the Revolution...

I just sat down at Barnes and Noble last night in KC and devoured the book "Revolution" by George Barna. Barna "is the founder of The Barna Group, a market research firm specializing in studying the religious beliefs and behavior of Americans, and the intersection of faith and culture." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Barna) He has been hailed as "the most quoted person in the Christian Church today." I was greatly encouraged by his research and the conclusions he drew as to where he sees the body of Christ moving in the next decades. If you've been feeling the stirrings of something new on the horizon of the expression of Christianity on the earth, and you feel called to play a role in bringing it forth, I suggest you read this book. And for you non-readers, it's actually a pretty quick read! Below are some of my favorite quotes from the book:

"Revolution" by George Barna

"The role of leaders in this new Revolution will not be building new institutions to replace the old. Rather, it will be providing guidance in the construction of new hearts and minds that produce a thriving Church (body of Christ) community. Weaving together the spectrum of ideas, talents, and resources of believers into a richer ministry tapestry will be their challenge." (pg 106)

"Revolutions are famous for being messy; things rarely go as planned and are notoriously inefficient. I see no reason to expect this budding revolution of faith to be any different. But that does not erase the phenomenal significance of this historic quest for more of God in the American life. The world will never be the same." (pg 110)

"Energetic resistance by the established church accompanied every significant episode of growth in the Kingdom since the time of Christ. Jesus and His followers were slandered, ridiculed, physically beaten, and murdered." (pg 111)

"We are commanded to worship God and we are encouraged to meet with other Christians for various purposes. However as we follow the development of the new covenant and related community of faith, notice that Jesus and his disciples provide few guidelines and commands regarding such meetings... few details about the logistics of Christian assemblies." (pg 115)

"Our research shows that local churches have virtually no influence in our culture. The seven dominant spheres of influence are movies, music, television, books, the Internet, law, and family. The second tier of influencers is comprised of entities such as schools, peers, newspapers, radio, and businesses. The local church appears among entities that have little or no influence on society. It seems that if revolutionaries approach faith from a different angle, the Church (body of Christ) has little to lose and much to gain. (pg 118)

"The Revolution is an extensive grassroots response to the undeniable and insatiable human longing for a genuine relationship with God our Father." (pg 124)

"Revolutionaries recognize that spiritual success is more about surrender than results... surrender to Jesus and His cause is the essence of eternal victory." (pg 125-126)

"Analysts might say that the job of a Revolutionary is to reform the culture, but that confuses purpose and product. God-lovers reform the culture simply by being true representatives of whom God made them to be. They do not create and enforce a carefully plotted and meticulously deployed agenda or reform. They simply live a holy and obedient life that a society suffering from the stranglehold of sin cannot ignore. The transformation that follows in their wake is not so much their doing as it is an inevitable result of God's creatures waking up to the difference between living in the freedom of Christ or in the shackles of Satan." (pg 126)

"Rather than draw people out of the world and into a relationship with an institution, revolutionaries demonstrate what it means to be the presence of God wherever they are. This is a broad-based grassroots revival that has no single leader and no headquarters." (pg 127)

"In the great awakenings of America's history, the pattern was always the same: draw people into the local church for teaching and other experiences. In this new movement of God, the approach is the opposite; it entails drawing people away from reliance upon a local church into a deeper connection with and reliance upon God. In other words, past revivals were outside-inside phenomena, in which the dynamic and evangelistically gifted Spurgeons, Finneys, Wesleys, and Whitefields of the Church (body of Christ) brought non-Christian people inside the local church to be ministered to. This edition is predominantly an outside-outside experience, where believers see the world as their church grounds and every human being they encounter as a soul to love into the permanent presence of God." (pg 127)
