The jellyfish is a remarkable organism because for the most part, it’s not there. They consist of an invisibly thin web of digestive tissue and an “acellular” matrix known as mesoglea to capture and manipulate the water which makes up 98% of their bodies, if bodies they be.

Reading lists are always a reductive process. Most reviews only serve to make me realize how little I liked the book I was about to recommend. This collection is basically the half-way point of Battle Royale, a mix of killer instinct and dumb luck.

“We find our friends in dead libraries.” - Rohit Gupta

2011 was actually a rough year for me and the printed word. Most of the books I picked up were hardcover editions that made loud, satisfying sounds when I pitched them against the fucking wall. Needless to say, I had a lot of other stuff going on at the time and none of it matters today.

I did, however, manage to recover something absurdly appropriate as an opening ritual for Brainsturbator’s 2012 season. I found a real deal lost reading list that I laid out on January 17th, 2011 and immediately forgot about. I found it an a notebook I brought back to Vermont this summer and I have been ordering books from it ever since. It turned out to be an excellent roadmap and it feels like I’m catching up on a year that never was.

I have dozens of projects and I neglect them all. This year, my biggest victim has been Brainsturbator, once the focus of my daily life, now mostly a museum to who I was four years ago. I am many things to many people, but there’s one constant: I read a couple hundred pages a day, minimum. So as we approach to end of 2010, I wanted to share some of my very highest reading recommendations with you fine folks…

The Age of Horus offers ample employment opportunities in the field of demolition. The entire Enlightenment and the great edifice of Science Herself are more of an obstacle than a foundation for us now. Allowing our outdated paradigms, social systems and vested interests to crumble into decay is dangerous to pedestrians. We need to take them out in a systematic way, pretty much ASAP.

I’m publishing this to clear out 2008. Like my 10 Ways article, this was written for Key 64 although it never got published. With the ESP Bootcamp coming up, and ambient synchronicity going off the charts, I figured right now is a great time to re-examine the psychic potential of human beings. This material is also relevant to the work/play I’m doing with Tim Boucher to develop MandalaOS and several other biocomputing systems for Omnivate LLC. I’ve quietly started up a Brainsturbator Tumblr account—BRNSTRBTR—and my notes on Living Interfaces might be of interest to the curious future mutants among you.

In the face of a global economic catastrophe, I’m not paying much attention to the news. “Our leaders” are lying like always. Sure, there’s Big Changes ahead—but scaremongering and cynicism are a waste of precious life. I’m actually more optimistic these days than I’ve ever been, and it’s all because of Africa. The most innovative solutions and inspirational success stories I’ve found are coming from the Mother Continent, and I can’t imagine a better remedy for American Fear than this. No matter what kind of nightmare collapse scenario you can imagine for the United States, Africa has already been there and back.

Brainsturbator is here for the long haul, so I’m doing this for the good of humanity...kind of like our backup Paul Laffoley Gallery, which is also under re-construction. (Meanwhile, check out Laffoley Archive. Like Laffoley, I honestly cannot understand a great deal of what Tony Smith is trying to tell me. Like everyone else I consider a teacher, though, he provides so much to think about that even Not Getting It becomes an educational experience. I hope you dig it.

The danger already exists that mathematicians have made a covenant with the devil to darken the spirit and confine man in the bonds of Hell.”

--St. Augustine

I’ve been working on an article encompassing these themes, but I had a revelation. If all I’m doing is re-organizing and synthesizing the work of other humans, why do I write so much? Rather than burden you with my own meditations on “The Illusion of Control,” I’ve decided to abandon that illusion altogether for this piece. I’m going to keep going for three more sentences and then I will step out of the way completely.

Everything assembled here is brainfood with a purpose: triggering shifts in perspective. When you get used to the same perspective—or “stuck”—it can be alarming to feel yourself shifting, but that’s a good thing—that’s neurons waking up, that’s muscle tissue saying THANK YOU, that’s new hormone combinations in your bloodstream. After all, even if your conscious “self” actually was in control, you’re only driving the car—you’re only manipulating something else.

Time is the single most universally constant of physical constants, and yet we barely know anything at all about it. Here in 2007, we still don’t even have a working definition of what it is.

I was going to do a “We Salute You” tribute, but I realized an interview would be better. Besides, I’m honestly unsure about how to approach even an introduction to Godforbid. Do I say he’s one of my favorite rappers? After all, the dude has moved on from mere hip hop—he’s currently working with That Handsome Devil, making some of the most creative shit I’ve heard since Zappa was wearing tight pants and frowning at the audience.

Shit...there I go, making music critic comparisons. Here’s the bottom line: this interview is some of the best stuff Brainsturbator has done in 2007. That Handsome Devil is an amazing band, and I feel confident saying that checking out their music will radically improve your day. Godforbid is a singular human being, and you’re about to find out why directly from him.
