PlayStation 4 DRM policies get a bit more complex: third-party publishers can dictate terms

Not so fast, vaquero. While Sony was cheered in heroic fashion for proclaiming that used games would be free and clear to operate on the PlayStation 4, it appears that the reality is actually a bit more complicated. Sony America CEO Jack Tretton has made clear today that while first-party titles will fit in with yesterday's "hands-off" approach, third-party publishers will be allowed to throw some curveballs.

"There's gonna be free-to-play, there's gonna be every potential business model on there, and again, that's up to their relationship with the consumer, what do they think is going to put them in the best fit. We're not going to dictate that, we're gonna give them a platform to publish on. The DRM decision is going to have to be answered by the third parties, it's not something we're going to control, or dictate, or mandate, or implement."

That's the new word out of Tretton's mouth, which seems to indicate that players like Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Treyarch and pretty much any PS4 game maker outside of Sony's own umbrella can cobble together any combination of policies they want. Nintendo’s E3 message: Wii U games are coming, just not quite yet

Nintendo may not have had a traditional press conference at this year's E3, but it used a Nintendo Direct video presentation this morning to prove that the Wii U isn't shrinking away from new competition in the form of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The 45-minute-long presentation showed quite a variety of new and old franchises for the Wii U from both third-party developers and Nintendo itself. The only problem, as far as Wii U owners are concerned, is that some of the most interesting announcements won't become actual games until next year.

Want the first-ever HD Mario Kart game? You'll have to wait until the spring of 2014. Want to play as Mega Man in a new Smash Bros. game (I know I do)? It will happen… next year. The exclusive sequel to the stylish and fatal Bayonetta still exists after its long media silence, but it won't hit Wii U consoles until next year. A new open-world adventure franchise called X from the creators of Xenosaga looks intriguing, but you won't be playing it until… yup, 2014.

A system's second holiday season is usually when its game library really starts to mature and we get to see what that system can really do. Given that, it's a bad sign that some of Nintendo's biggest franchises won't be able to make the crucial holiday sales rush this year.

Not that Nintendo's lineup for the holidays will be empty. The company will have a Wii U update to the delightful isometric platformer Super Mario 3D Land called Super Mario 3D World in December. We won't get a new Zelda game for the Wii U any time in the fear future, but that HD update to The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, which comes with a few Wii U exclusive features, will be ready by October. A new Donkey Kong Country 2D side-scroller is coming this year, too, as well as a new Wii Fit that makes use of a "fit meter" and a new Wii Party game. And don't forget that exclusive Sonic game, Lost World.

Nintendo also stressed that the Wii U will be getting ports of some of the year's biggest third-party titles, showing them off in rapid succession during the video presentation. Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, Batman Arkham Origins, Disney Infinity, Just Dance 2014, Rayman Legends, Scribblenauts Unlimited: A DC Comics Adventure, Disney's Planes, Skylanders SWAP Force, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, and Watch Dogs will all be appearing on the Wii U as well as other systems. While that's all well and good, there are still plenty of third-party games that are not getting Wii U ports, and there are precious few titles from outside developers that will be exclusive to the Wii U (save for the delightful-looking superhero adventure The Wonderful 101).

Nintendo's video presentation this morning succeeded in its job of making sure people don't forget that Nintendo's system still exists in the wake of Sony and Microsoft's marketing onslaught. But the overriding message was that Nintendo's slow trickle of games wouldn't be changing to a flood any time soon, and players will be forced to wait for some of the console's biggest and most expected franchises.

Acer's flagship Aspire S7 may be 2013's ultrabook to beat, S3 needs low price to succeed

At Acer's press conference in Taipei yesterday, the company announced some very welcome changes to one of our favorite ultrabooks of 2012: the Aspire S7. Our two primarily complaints with the machine — battery life and limited RAM — have been addressed, while everything we loved about the laptop — its solid construction and Gorilla Glass lid — has remained the same. It's a promising combination, and after handling the Aspire S7 here at Computex, it looks like Acer may have a winner on its hands.

The Aspire S7 remains an attractive ultrabook. Like before, Acer's used aluminum for the body and covered the white lid with Gorilla Glass, giving the laptop a premium look. As we noted yesterday when we first handled a (powered off) model, Acer has altered the aesthetics a bit, with the bottom tapering off towards the edges — making the machine somewhat too reminiscent of other ultrabooks and the MacBook Air. Still, the S7 is a handsome machine I'd be proud to tote into a Manhattan coffee shop. The company has also managed to fit a few ports on the side of the laptop, with two USB 3.0 ports, an HDMI port, Mini DisplayPort, and an SD card reader.

It's not all just about looks, however. The company says it's increased key travel on the S7 over last year's model. The backlit chiclet keyboard is still shallow, but it's comfortable to use. It's worth noting that there are no dedicated function keys and caps lock is a minuscule button connected to the tilde, which may be frustrating depending on how you use the laptop (we don't think it's a problem). The touchpad is suitably roomy and smooth, though it doesn't quite reach the ever-elusive standard set by MacBooks.

While looks are important, that's never where the last-generation S7 struggled. The most significant update to the S7 comes to its power plant: Acer's using Intel's newly-minted (and very promising) Haswell processors, which are said to offer significantly improved battery life and integrated graphics performance. The model on display here at Computex featured an ultra-low voltage Core i7-4500U at 1.8GHz, though Core i5 models will be available as well. Performance was snappy when swiping through Windows 8's start screen, and selections took almost immediately. We'll need to do a full review to see how well Haswell delivers, so keep an eye out for that. Even if Haswell doesn't offer the battery life boost advertised, the new S7 should last far longer than the three hours and 55 minutes we eked out of the previous model. That's because Acer's added a 34 percent larger battery.

Lastly, Acer will offer a new 2560 x 1440 resolution display option in select regions. Unfortunately no demo unit was available, and we're told that the panel may not even be available in the US. For regions that do receive the high-resolution option, however, we're told it will come in at about a $500 price premium. The good news is that the 1080p, IPS display on the standard model is a quality unit. Viewing angles — which are especially important for a laptop with an 180-degree hinge — are excellent and colors are accurate.

Acer launches first 8-inch Windows tablet, plans touchscreens everywhere

Acer took the wraps off the world’s first 8-inch Windows 8 tablet today at Computex, a giant computer tradeshow in Taipei.

Continuing the run of lucky 8s, the company also said that 80 percent of its products would feature touchscreen technology by 2015, or perhaps as early as 2014.

25 percent of Acer’s notebook sales were touchscreen-enabled, according to Reuters, and the company expects that number to rise to 30-35 percent. Acer is the world’s fourth-largest PC vendor after Dell, HP, and Lenovo.

According to ZDNet, Acer’s Iconia W3-810 tablet will have the following specs:

8.1-inch display with 1,280 x 800 pixels
1.8GHz Atom Z2760 processor, a dual-core chip
8 hours of battery life

Other specs, not including the numeral 8, will include:

2GB of memory
Either 32GB or 64GB of storage
MicroSD slot for expansion storage
Micro-HDMI and USB ports
Option Bluetooth keyboard
Weight of 500 grams, or about 1 pound 1.7 ounces
Thickness of 11.4mm, or 0.45 inches

It will come with Microsoft Office Home & Student edition pre-installed, and will cost $379 and up.

That price is pretty low, given that it includes a version of Office. If you are one of those people who hasn’t yet made the migration to Google Docs, this could be a very attractive tablet option.

As far as the touchscreen prediction, it is a clear sign that the market is moving toward a new interface format for all devices, not just smartphones and tablets.

Acer, whose president Jim Wong has had harsh words for Windows 8 before, is clearly willing to give Microsoft the benefit of the doubt. It’s far from betting the whole farm on Redmond’s horse, however — Acer will continue to produce Android tablets and Chromebooks.

Apple has just quietly launched a budget-friendly new iPod touch: a 16GB model, with a 4-inch Retina display and a price tag of $230. Replacing the last-gen 3.5-inch version, which hung around Apple's store for a while, the new budget offering loses some of the more advanced features found on the more expensive models—such as the rear camera. It does, however, pack a dual-core Apple A5 processor and the same screen as the four-inch iPhone and iPod Touch. It can also handle FaceTime thanks to a front-facing camera on the front. Only available in silver, it should be in Apple stores from May 31st for $230.

The Pen Sized Scanner With Laser Guides

This pen shaped scanner allows you to conveniently and quickly capture text on a page by simply hovering the pen over the document. Integrated in to the pen is a 5 megapixel camera capable of capturing images at a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels. Although the laser guide looks a little fake on the image below, we actually hear that the pen does this to some extent. What you do is hold the pen a few inches above the page, push the scan button half way to enable the laser guide, match up the area you want to scan and then push the button all the way to capture the shot.

As you push the button the final amount, the camera quickly focuses and then captures an image which is stored inside the pens memory. The pen has 1GB of storage which can store about 1000 files in JPEG format. It also has a microphone built in that can capture audio in WAV format. To copy files from the pen to PC/Laptop, you connect it up to the said device with a USB cable. The battery takes about 1 hour to charge and is good for capturing up to 300 pages of text. Charging is also done by the USB port on the pen.

Samsung confirms Galaxy S 4 Mini: 4.3-inch display, 1.7 GHz dual-core processor

So, it might not be a surprise that it was in the works, but its official announcement today almost caught us off guard. Here it is, the Samsung Galaxy S 4 Mini. Now we can say for sure that there's a (yet to be specified) 1.7 GHz dual-core processor, Android 4.2.2, GPS, GLONASS, WiFi, 8GB internal memory (expandable up to 64), and 1.5GB of RAM. The display is a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED qHD affair, which will be kept going by a 1,900 mAh battery, with the shooters coming in 8- and 1.9-megapixel resolutions. There's LTE support -- as you'd hope -- in 6 band sets, plus single and dual-SIM 3G versions for certain markets. Color choices are white and black (for now), with no official word on price and availability at this time. Mini, just got bigger it seems.

New Xbox: Questions and answers

The new Xbox has been unveiled, and with today's announcement comes questions for Kiwi gamers.

Will the Xbox One be on sale before the end of the year? Yes.

How much will it cost? Right now, that answer is unclear.

Can you play your Xbox 360 games on it? Absolutely not.

Xbox Live General Manager Mark Whitten said the Xbox 360 and its vast library of hard-copy and digital games would live on even as the Xbox One era begins, effectively fulfilling past predictions that the current-generation console would be part of Microsoft's plans for some time yet.

But the times, and the technology, are a-changing, and the old games are the quadrilaterals in this particular square peg, round hole scenario.

The differences in system architecture were too strong to justify full backwards compatibility, Whitten told the Herald in an office located at Microsoft's sprawling Xbox campus in Redmond, Washington, shortly after the new console's global unveiling.

"The fact is, we're focused on the Xbox 360 ecosystem continuing and being really vibrant.

"I think people will continue to buy games for the 360 but at the same time, we wanted to build the platform for the future."

The approach creates an interesting scenario. The Xbox One is the device that will do everything. Everything, that is, except play the current crop of games.

The news did not go down well with Kiwi gamers following the announcement online.

"You just lost my money," wrote Tom Isaacson via his @Parsley72 account on Twitter.

"Backwards compatibility is not a technical issue, it's a political one."

Whitten stressed that Xbox was not following the formula of old, where a console was abandoned when the updated version came to market. More about the Xbox 360's future is expected to be revealed at E3 this June.

A select range of titles for the new console were revealed yesterday, including four games from EA Sports' Ignite initiative. Attendees also witnessed the global premiere of the new Call of Duty franchise, Ghosts, and learned of a new live-action television series based on the blockbuster Halo series, backed by film icon Steven Spielberg.

It is expected that full pricing details and a possible release date will be revealed at E3 in Los Angeles next month.

Video previews 3D gesture controller as market waits for launch

Leap Motion, Inc. on Monday released a deep dive into its 3D gesture controller’s Windows OS interaction, previewing the “future of touch-free computing.”

The video expands on Leap Motion's intro video by illustrating web browsing, OS interactions like pointing and clicking, and existing software application functionality for Windows 7 and 8. A deep dive into Mac OSX is coming soon, the company said.

“This is the foundation for our approach to existing systems," said David Holz, co-founder and CTO. “But this is only the beginning. The potential for our 3D interaction technology is really unleashed by applications built specifically for Leap Motion, helping drive the future of computing."

Users will have the ability to browse the web, navigate desktops, and interact with existing software right out of the box, the company said.

Leap Motion’s Airspace app store for the controller will offer a range of applications from art and music to science and games.

The company announced on Earth Day, April 22, that it was being supported by Google Earth, allowing users to fly around San Francisco, the Grand Canyon, New York City, and more.

The San Francisco-based company had planned to release the hardware for shipping on May 19 and make it available at retail on July 27.

But CEO Michael Buckwald announced in April the ship date would be delayed due to the need for more beta testing from its community of users.

Leap Motion said late last week it was previewing the 3D controller’s functionality before it heads into beta testing in early June.

Both the company and big box retail Best Buy are now taking pre-orders with a ship date of July 22.

It’s perhaps the definition of the term, But it’s true, I’m sitting here on a couch adjacent to my desk because I’d rather type this post on my MacBook Air, To be completely honest, I’d rather be using my iPad right now, But I must admit, it doesn’t come wherever close to cutting it when it comes to typing more than a few dozen words, So for now, the MacBook Air exists as the pinnacle of personal computing in my eyes,

The rumors which started as a trickle have now become a full-on stream, Apple appears to be gearing up to release a new 15-inch model in their thin laptop line, As of right now, the current MacBook Air models end at 13 inches, For many people, that doesn’t seem to be enough,

Earlier today, I posted some quick thoughts about a possible 15-inch MacBook Air, Most of the responses were along the lines of “WANT!!!”, But why? It’s not like the difference between 13 and 15 inches will be that dramatic,

Instead, I believe it’s related to a continuing shift in computing, Whereas a decade ago, big, bulky desktops (towers, even) were the norm, today’s computing world is increasingly mobile, And it’s more than that, Computing is quickly moving in the direction of the machines themselves disappearing into the background, as Mathew Ingram highlights today on GigaOM,
