The perils of international branding have once again been highlighted with the news of Russian gas giant Gazprom’s new joint venture with Nigerian firm NNPC — to be called Nigaz. (The logo on the left is a selfmade mockup)

While the origin of the name is easily explained — a conjunction of the words “Nigeria” and “gaz” — English-speakers seeing the word written down find the brand name has rather different connotations.

Incredulous Twitterers quickly spread the story around, dubbing it a branding fail and prompting a number to suggest Nigaz should adopt a strapline along the lines of “gas with attitude”.

Nigaz will actually build refineries, pipelines and gas power stations in Nigeria.

Shortly thereafter I got the Grundig Audiorama 9000 as a gift and was amazed. Such expensive speakers as a gift - one of those speakers costs around $700(!) - and unlucky me hasn’t got any amplifier to actually use them.

Until now I only had a micro stereo which wouldn’t handle speakers with more than 40W so I thought I’d ask German company Grundig if they have a recommendation. I explained my situation and waited for more than two weeks to finally receive this super helpful message:

Dear Mr. Cserny,

at the moment we don’t have any suitable amplifiers in our product range.

Best regards,

….

Doh! I have seen myself that they don’t have any suitable product on their website but I thought if somebody spends around $1400 for two speakers they at least have a recommendation where and what to look for.

Well, no…

The speakers are pure quality and very stylish but Grundig’s customer service sucks big time.
Mixing old and new myths, the Bagua mission is to create stylish shoes encouraging long walks and profound thoughts. The name itself, derived from Ba gua, translates as “eight divine symbols,” reflected by the octagon diagram which represents a series of eight interrelated concepts.

Now that it’s nearly ready to “fight” Google’s dominance Microsoft announced the official name bing and will launch a $100 million marketing campaign to introduce the brand.

Too bad, bing means disease in Chinese

Does Microsoft not research the meaning before introducing a new brand, or, will Microsoft rebrand the product in China, or, did Microsoft never intent to market it their, or, does Microsoft not care…?

Will “I googled you” translate into “I banged / bonged you” ?
