How Air-Source Heat Pumps Work by the U. S. Department of Energy

Electric Air Source Heat Pumps

Air source heat pumps are a type of heat pump which utilize outside air as a heat source to heat or cool. Air source heat pumps are more efficient than oil, gas, and electric heating in mild climates but they are less efficient than ground source heat pumps. Why? Ground source heat pumps receive energy from the ground which is warmer than the outside air in winter. Air source heat pumps cost less to install than ground source pumps as they avoid the installation cost of a ground loop.

A heat pump transfers heat energy from a cooler to a warmer location. A heat pump uses the refrigeration process and transfers low temperature energy to a refrigeration loop, compresses the refrigerant to a high temperature, and transfers this heat to the hot water and heating distribution syste. In the summer this same energy removes it from the home. Systems normally range from a single 4kW unit to multiple units with a single controller producing around 300kW.

Remodeling often comes across the common problem of brick and block work needing mortar joints replaced. Did you know mortar repair is the most common brick and block work? Brick and block mortar joints being replaced is called "Tuck-pointing". Tuck-pointing can be used to fix walls, chimneys, stone walls, and other structures where mortar is bonded with brick.

Mortar repair requires certain tools and materials to assure your success. What tools will you need to repair your mortar and your grout lines?

Repair of stone, block and brickwork requires the basic tools of a tuck-pointer, mortar hawk, raking tool, bricklayers hammer, jointing tool, stone chisel, and a stiff-bristle brush. Mortar and concrete fortifier are also needed materials for your remodel repair job of repairing brick and block crack joints known as tuck-pointing.

You motivated yet man? ARE YOU READY? Lets begin the mortar repair work! Clean out the loose mortar to about 1/2"-3/4" deep. To begin your repair work take the mortar raking tool to clean out the loose mortar. Then switch to the masonry (stone) chisel and hammer to finish the job. Once this is done, clear the loose mortar away and apply water to the surface. Then apply fresh mortar. Your Doing Great If You Are Reading Still! You Will Find Success!

Mix the mortar and add the concrete fortifier (Tinting may be necessary to match the mortar's color). Load the mortar onto the hawk (Tool with a handle or you can make your own holder with a board) and push the mortar into the joints using the tool called what? A tuck-pointer! You are catching on! At this point we are putting the mortar in the horizontal joints only. Apply the mortar in 1/4" thick layers and let each layer dry for 30 minutes before applying another layer. Keep applying mortar until the mortar is flush with the brick for optimal success.

Now is the correct time to add mortar to the vertical joints. Again, use the tuck-pointer and press mortar into the joints working from the top down. Continue with your grout line repair work applying mortar in layers as before. When the final layer of mortar is applied, smooth the joints with a jointing tool that matches the old mortar joints. Strike off the horizontal mortar lines before the vertical grout lines.

Is there a final step? Sure! For a final touch - when the mortar is crumbly after drying awhile, brush excess the with a stiff-bristle brush.

Painting our homes is something we all face. Whether we look to paint a single room such as a bedroom or paint our entire home the questions are - Can We Paint On a Budget? How can money be saved when painting your home? What supplies are needed for painting a bedroom in a home?

Shall we start with painting supplies for a bedroom? An average home room size of 10 x 15 (The average Bedroom size) will equal a coverage of 450 square feet of wall space for a home. This is assuming you have nine foot ceilings or you use a little extra paint when painting. Remember - 150 Square feet of ceiling space as well.

Many people painting homes make the mistake of not painting the ceiling of their home right away. They think the ceiling is all right, until they paint the walls. Then they decide to paint the ceiling of the home - TOO LATE.

Painting the Ceiling of your home is a good idea if you decide to paint a room. Painting the ceiling on your home first is much easier than doing only the walls and then deciding a year later to go back and paint your ceiling.

Paint Coverage
A gallon of paint covers 250 to 400 square feet. Take this times two and we have enough for the walls and the ceiling for the bedroom in your home.

Home Painting Supplies?
An angled paint brush, a roller, roller covers, a paint pan, painters (blue rolls) or masking tape, painter paper (covering trim) paint edger, plastic, painters caulk, caulk gun, wood filler or putty, and a putty knife are other supplies needed before starting painting.

Paint Brush and paint roller quality is important! Know the quality of brushes and rollers you are purchasing and what paint brush type works best to ensure quality painting for your home as well as making the painting process much easier.

Dollar stores also sell home painting materials. Often they have high quality brushes along with the standard lower grade stock. This can be a place for a bargain! This is also true for rollers and roller covers.

However - most people find the paint brush and roller selection there is often lower end. This can be frustrating ! Fuzzies get all over as you begin painting with cheap paint rollers. Pick, Pick, pick, fuzzie, fuzzie, fuzzie... NO FUN AT ALL! Perhaps purchasing painting materials from your local home center is a better choice after all!

Often paying more for better quality painting materials will cost less in the long run. If you understand paint brush and roller types - you can get bargains but for most of us paying more will end up with us paying less when our home painting project is complete.

Painting Budgeting Dollars
Plan on spending around $100 to $125 on painting materials if you are planning on painting a bedroom in your home. Sticking with good quality paint will cost you less on your paint coverage as well as the time you spend painting in your home. You know what they say! Time is money! Save yourself a headache and use good quality paints!

Take care of your home painting tools. The paint brushes, pan, edger, putty knife, and paint roller can all be cleaned and used again for painting following rooms in your home.

Saving painting tools lowers your painting budget! This adds up to quite a bit if painting multiple rooms. (Instead of $125 dollars for painting one rooms - perhaps under $180 Dollars for two!) Cleaning your painting tools right away also helps keep the painting project flowing smoothly.

Home Painting Tip - Folding Plastic or Tarp
You protected the floor from paint spills with plastic or a tarp correct? When painting the room is complete and you are moving to another room in your home - fold your plastic or tarp toward the center! This will allow you to use it again.

Paint Brushes can also be placed in storage bag(s) (Two bags is better than one!) and placed in re-fridge or freezer of your home when taking a break.

I will probably hear it from the true penny pincher's, but I usually throw away used paint roller covers. Currently it is $7 for a six pack and cleaning them just isn't worth my time. Paint Rollers also seem to lose absorbency and using a new paint roller for each project area seems to work best.

Paint Dollar Amount
If you shop around and find bargains for good quality paint you may be able to purchase paint for your home in the $25 to $35 range per gallon. It may be as high as $45 which at first seems high doesn't it! Painting dollars can be saved when purchasing the paint in larger quantities such as five gallon buckets.

Buying Quality Paint Saves Dollars
Remember that we get what we pay for! A recent home owner painted first the upstairs and later the basement of the home. They found they used twice as much paint using the lower dollar paint for their home! The actually paid 1/3 more for the lower dollar paint! Sticking with quality paint for your home is in your best interest! Be smart - It is your money - Keeping an eye out for sales and rebates is a great idea!

Looking at your roof's valleys are you seeing that there are many cracks? Your home's roof is almost certainly leaking! If this is true - and your roof is not leaking (yet) the second layer of shingles on your roof may be slowing down the water infiltration into your home along with your homes insulation. Note: Home Inspectors do have tight schedules and can not be expected to take time to educate you on how to electrical work for instance if you are a home owner. The job they do is to inspect, not plan the project for your home.

A few steps may help ensure smooth home inspections.

Before scheduling a home inspection - ask the home building department for printed information about your type of electrical project. Make drawings of the work you will do on a special type of graph paper (lines disappear when copied!) or with a CAD program. Have your home drawings be neat, and complete with a material list for your home's project.

You have drawn up plans for your home and worked hard on them. Time to submit them to the home inspector for approval. Now - Criticism Time! On Your Plans! You worked so very hard on your home plans too! BITE your tongue and LISTEN! The home inspector may see 20 or more plans a day to the one home remodeling plan you made. Home Inspectors know more than you do! When we think for a second we know better than the home inspectors I will compare this to my son stomping his foot because he knows better than I do and he knows how to drive the car - even if he is only five. Do home inspectors sometimes need to see the whole picture and miss out on some items - sure - they are busy. Respect them, ask them, and they will help you. Make it clear to them that you want to do things the right way.

Take Notes. Remember the code details your home inspector tells you.

Understand when home inspections will happen.
Understand Exactly what needs to be done before each home inspection.
Understand before calling up Mr. Home Inspector that your construction is complete by Double Checking Double Checking Everything Twice, Twice!
A common - NO - NO - mistake is drywalling before the home building inspector shows up. It sure takes a lot longer to take off drywall and then rehang or replace the drywall!

Even if everything was done correctly - you still look like my son hiding his hands behind his back. Even when my son did not take the candy I am still asking him what did you take? Ask it Out When in Doubt - Call your home building inspection office - Ask!

Building inspection departments or local codes may have limits on the kinds of work a homeowner can do. A professional may be needed for at least part of your home remodeling or home building project. Other inspection offices let you take on advanced work if you can pass an oral or written test. Be prepared to understand codes while implementing understanding of the entire building inspection process!

2. Not having control over the outcome of the situation, we start thinking about ways in which we can be in control.
3. It feels good to feel sorry for ourselves.
4. It gives us an excuse to procrastinate.
5. We are looking for sympathy from others.

Benefits of Thinking Happy Thoughts
1. It makes us feel good and gives us plenty of energy.
2. It motivates us.
3. It puts a smile on our face.
4. It develops self-confidence and we feel proud.
5. It creates commitment

We have a choice - either we can walk around feeling good or we can try to think of ways to change a situation that has already happened. Just for today, which choice will you make?

I know that thinking happy thoughts will give me more energy, motivation and put a smile on my face. The next question then becomes - how do you change those thoughts. What follows are some ideas in regards to this:

1. Acknowledge the thought and when the thought stops, start thinking about something that made you happy in the past.
2. While thinking the unhappy thought give yourself a big hug and say out loud, “I feel sorry for you and I love you.” Giving ourselves sympathy sometimes makes us feel better.
3. Journal about the situation and think of ways you can let go of the negative thoughts.
4. Put a smile on your face while you are thinking - usually the negative thought will disappear!
5. For today, don’t talk about your unhappy thoughts. Think about only what makes you happy.

Window Cleaning: What the Professionals Do Not want You to Know

Window cleaning is one of the easiest tasks to perform if the house keeping crew has the proper tools at its disposal. What is needed is a synthetic lambs wool window washing tool, a bucket that will accommodate the tool, a squeegee, and a clean lint free cloth. The better squeegees have quick release mechanisms and angled heads.

I forget to mention one other window washing tool - You! the window washer being motivated to actually clean the windows is the most important element to keeping your home's windows sparkling clean!

A cleaning solution often containing a little ammonia is prepared with cold water or warm water. The water should never be hot as the ammonia reacts with the hot water. The first step is to remove all window coverings to facilitate the cleaning and to avoid the possibility of spilling cleaning solution on the drapes and curtains next to your windows.

When cleaning windows one should begin with applying the cleaning solution to the top of the window, working the dirt towards the center of the window from the outside edges. Do not over wet the window and cause the excess solution to run and pool on the window sill or floor.

Before the window has a chance to dry, squeegee the window, starting at the top corner. Make one pass across the glass and angle the blade so that the dirty part of the window rather than back onto the cleaned portion. Wipe the blade clean with the cloth after each pass of the blade.

Finally do not attempt to clean windows in the hot sun. The sun will cause the window to dry before it can be squeezed, causing streaking. Exterior window cleaning, especially on high rise buildings should be left to professional window washers.

When selecting window treatment, functions and appearance should both be considered. The appropriate window covering provides privacy to the person using the room. Also insulation is provided by the window covering. The window covering is a significant design element.

Window treatment can be divided into three categories namely drapery, shades, and blinds. Drapery and curtain fabric should be fire resistance, soil and wear resistant, resistant to sun damage, resistant to molds and mild dew, and wrinkle resistant. Delicate fabrics and loose weaves will quickly lose their shape, will snag and wrinkle, and will wear prematurely. Restorative cleaning methods of the window's shades will depend on the material composition of the shade and will not be same for all compositions.

Whether a homeowner desperately needs a kitchen revamp, or is tired of the dated look of the kitchen, there are several options to freshen up your kitchen.

The easiest fix for a sparkling new (ish) kitchen is a good thorough cleaning. Over years of use, kitchen cabinets take on food, heat, and grease that tends to build up. Though it might seem simpler to leave cabinet doors attached to clean them, taking time to remove the doors allows for easier access in the long run, though it's advisable to number the doors to keep track of which goes where. There are many cleaners on the market, but trisodium phosphate, known as TSP, has a great track record as a heavy duty degreaser and cleaner.

After cleaning your cabinet doors and cabinet sides, the kitchen hardware will also need a good soak. Remove the hinges and drawer pulls, and let them sit in a good soapy water mix for 30 minutes. Giving your cabinet hardware a light scrub and polish can make them look brand new. If the kitchen needs some updating, changing the hinges and handles or pulls on cabinets is inexpensive, and can dramatically change the look of a kitchen.

For those looking to make a bigger change on their kitchen, and spend a greater amount of time on their cabinets, the cabinets can also be refinished. Before refinishing your cabinets, it's still advisable to clean the wood thoroughly, as sanding them down could embed dirt and grime even further without a proper cleaning before you apply the finish to your stripped cabinets.

To remove old stain or paint from your cabinetry, the easiest way is with a chemical, or paint stripper. By following the directions of the stripper, the chemicals end up doing most of the work of removing your cabinet's finish, and the old varnish should easily peel from your cabinets. After the stripping is done, it's time to sand your cabinetry.

Starting with 120 grit sandpaper should help remove any of the old paint or stain left behind by the stripper. Afterwards, smooth out the wood with 220 grit sandpaper. After your kitchen cabinets are properly sanded, apply a primer if painting, or a sanding sealer if staining (which works much like primer, allowing your cabinet's stain to penetrate evenly). Once the paint or stain is applied to your cabinets, add a final finish, such as varnish or lacquer to protect the wood. Water-based polyurethanes also do a great job, and are environmentally friendly and easier to work with although the finish will not be as durable long term for your kitchen.

If refinishing cabinets won't help the kitchen's appearance, and an entire renovation is out of the question, there are companies that specialize in refacing. After measuring the sizes of the current cabinet doors, a refacing company will custom build new cabinet doors, with a wide choice of stains, finishes and hardware to choose from. This is a good option for those living in older homes whose kitchen cabinets are sturdier and well crafted compared to today's modular cabinet options.

When you are installing your laminate flooring the first thing you must do is tap the short ends together. However- DO NOT tap them too hard. Doing so could damage them, so just tap gently and wait for the seam to close.

Next, always keep the tongue towards you as you are installing the laminate flooring. NEVER tap against the grove. Make sure that you overlap the seams by at least 16-18 inches, if you don't then you might void your warranty.

Installing Reminder:
To install the first row always start from the left and then tap the short side of another board with the first one. This will create a link between the two. Repeat this until you are near the end of the room. Then check the space left (it should be 5/16 inch.). After that you can then put in the spacers along the wall and the laminated board.

Moving On - When Using a Bonding Agent
As you are installing the rows of laminate flooring, hinge the long sides and allow them to simply fall into place. Then simply tap the short sides together. There is a 2 part bonding agent placed on the tongue and on the groove of the short sides of the laminate flooring boards. Once the boards have been in contact for at least 20 minutes, the chemical reaction using the agent should begin to strengthen the boards. After 24hours the process is complete.

Nothing says "bathroom" like bright tiles in creative designs. While many have opted for cheap fixes like synthetic shower enclosures and linoleum floors or even carpet pieces, the traditional look of tile has the potential to make a bathroom stand out like none other. Tiles come in three main styles: harlequin pattern, natural stone with marble accents, and traditional tiles with color and pattern splashed throughout them.

The harlequin pattern distinguishes itself from the other styles simply by the diamond tile placement instead of the traditional square placement. This particular style appeals to me for several reasons, for one, it's different. It distinguishes the bathroom as a canvas of creativity instead of just another place where a person has to spend time daily. The variety of colors and patterns available give a person endless options for expressing their personal tastes and interests.

Like I said before, I really prefer the harlequin style. And in fact, I most prefer this style in simple, stark black and white tiles. Precisely placed, black and white tiles with chrome accents throughout the bathroom have the potential to make this particular room stand out. No longer do you have to walk into a dull, beige room, but you have the classy look of a dichromatic style with shiny touches. Be aware, however, that if you indeed prefer this look, you're going to be spending some time polishing. The shiny harlequin tiles in black and white and the chrome finishes easily show both water spots and finger prints. So if you don't prefer spending lots of time polishing, you may want to consider other styles of tiles.

The stone tile works best for those who despise water spots. These natural tiles have a matte finish that does not reveal water spots or finger prints. Additionally, the traditional look of brushed stainless steel accents lends itself to a cleanable bathroom because it too does not show water spots or finger prints easily. Those who have a bigger budget can consider the classy look of marble fixtures that blend in well with their natural stone tile.

Many times priced by the piece, tiles can cost a bundle. And so if you're working on a more modest budget, you'll want to move right past the harlequin and natural stone tiles, and instead focus on the traditional tiles. You can still make your bathroom reflect your personal tastes thanks to the vast variety of colors and patterns available in these tiles.

Remember that once you have your style chosen, you should have a professional install your tiles. Sure, we'd all love to save a buck or two, but in the end, you'll appreciate the professional finish that only a trained mason can create.
