In 2011, British Columbia continued to address critical areas in its healthcare delivery, namely research and development in the technology field, improved choice and access to health care for citizens, and reduced wait times in emergency departments, through both budgetary allocations and proactive implementation of initiatives. Further, British Columbia remains at the forefront of EHR deployment and continues to be the national lead on the Panorama public health surveillance initiative with the support of Canada Health Infoway. The use of telehealth to address a number of issues has shown great promise for the betterment of patient care in the province.

According to Wayne Gudbranson, President and CEO of the Branham Group, "British Columbia is perhaps the most progressive province in terms of making proactive wellness a key component of health care, ultimately allowing the province to better cope with the growing demands on the system going forward." He further stated that, "BC has successfully leveraged Digital Health solutions not only in improving the quality of care to the patient, but also in addressing the shortage of workers in health care in the province. However, continuous refinement to ensure the health care system itself and legislation surrounding the use of health information are appropriate and continue to keep the best interest of citizens in mind."

The report has been produced as part of Branham's Digital Health NOW offering, which provides unbiased information and analysis of trends in Digital Health, and an in-depth analysis on the current state of Digital Health deployment in Canadian and international health care regions and organizations.

The report discusses the field of Telehealth, which is rapidly gaining momentum as a proven and essential technology that is helping to reduce laboratory expenses, improve operational efficiency, enhance productivity, and improve treatment decisions and patient care. Telehealth adds a new paradigm in health care, and has shown to significantly reduce hospitalizations and visits to the Emergency Room, while also being able to improve the patient's quality of life. Telehealth also benefits patients where traditional delivery of health services is affected by distance and lack of local specialist clinicians to deliver services.

"Telehealth supports the evolution of health care in Canada and is a key success story in our efforts to leverage technology to reduce the burden on our health care system," says Wayne Gudbranson, President and CEO of Branham Group. "Telehealth helps to make up for shortage of skilled manpower, provide access to personalized treatment plans, and make medical expertise available to all Canadians, irrespective of where they are located. We are amongst the leaders in the world in leveraging telehealth and it is a matter of time before telehealth becomes fully integrated in our health care delivery model."

In 2011, the Government of Ontario continued its commitment to strengthening its health care system. From changes to legislature to millions of dollars pledged to hospital upgrades and continued support for various strategies, a great deal of activity has taken place in Ontario over the last year. With the eHealth initiatives back on track after the organizational setback in 2008-09, the province is now on the right track to achieving an electronic health record within years to come. The continued investment in improving hospital infrastructure and offering more health care services closer to where the citizen’s live through Family Health Teams and Nurse Practitioner led clinics, the province has managed to become the leader in reducing wait times in the country.

According to Wayne Gudbranson, President and CEO of the Branham Group, "Over the past year, there is no doubt that several activities took place in Ontario that have helped to strengthen the delivery of healthcare in Ontario. However, in order to continue to provide quality health care to its citizens, Ontario will need continued focus on leveraging technology to optimize delivery of health care, the involvement of the LHINs, and innovative products from the private sector."

In 2011, all the Atlantic Provinces continued to implement their health care IT strategies to improve the delivery of health care to their populations. This has been largely evident in their efforts to leverage technology to address some key pain points, including patient wait times, electronic health records, and optimizing processes to make up for shortage of personnel. During the past year, all the Atlantic Provinces have made impressive strides in moving forward with the deployment of the EHR.

According to Wayne Gudbranson, President and CEO of the Branham Group, "Development and upgrade of infrastructure remains an important priority for all the provinces, as do investments in long-term care and home care. The collaborative approach between the Atlantic Provinces has resulted in cooperation on several fronts, including human resources management, drug programs and wait time management systems, amongst others; all key challenges faced by these provinces."

The health care delivery system in Canada is going through an accelerated period of intense focus and transformation. The fundamental basis for this transformation is the gradual move from reactive health care to proactive wellness with the patient at the centre. There has also been a growing recognition of the need for the key stakeholders in the health care system to work in an integrated fashion across the complete Continuum of Care.

According to Wayne Gudbranson, President and CEO of the Branham Group, "Today, Canada's health care system faces many challenges, including escalating costs of health care delivery, a fast increasing senior's population, increasing demands on Healthcare services due to growing Chronic Diseases, shortage of adequately trained healthcare professionals, and systemic inefficiencies from outdated practices, policies and workflows. The lack of integrated information exchange creates inherent inefficiencies within the system and is a major contributor to these escalating costs." He further states that, "The current model of healthcare delivery is disjointed and does not support seamless sharing of information. There is a growing acknowledgment of the need for the key stakeholders in the health care system to work in an integrated fashion across the complete Continuum of Care. This integration will be driven by technology in years to come."

The key enabler in making this integration possible and ensuring that information flows seamlessly across all components of the Continuum of Care, is healthcare information technology (HIT) or Digital Health. An integrated Continuum of Care model of healthcare delivery requires that patient information be made available to all health care providers, when and where they need it (taking into account obvious privacy and information security concerns). The building blocks for the Continuum of Care already exist; what’s lacking is the integration and seamless exchange of information between and across these components.

This update from Branham Digital Health NOW provides readers with a better understanding of what an integrated Continuum of Care means, the importance of technology in enabling its achievement, and the progress to date. The Continuum of Care model is accessible through Branham's Digital Health NOW subscription services program.

The report provides a narrative on how health care systems in developing countries project the struggle between the need to provide health care to citizens while balancing this need with economic and other development imperatives. The report further delves into the key components of health care systems around the world and explores select systems in brief. It also compares the Canadian health care system with other OECD countries. Canada's health care system, while a successful model of universal health care, continues to experience its own set of challenges, including increasing wait times, shortage of skilled labour, and limited budgets.

According to Wayne Gudbranson, President and CEO of the Branham Group, "The study of international health care systems inevitably reveals stark and intriguing contrasts, which have at their root an individual country's unique set of economic and social values." He further states that, "Health care systems in all nations are driven by both economic and social factors, however each one has unique characteristics and needs. It is important for Canada to learn from other health care systems around the globe."

The report has been produced as part of Branham's Digital Health NOW offering, which provides unbiased information and analysis of trends in Digital Health, and an in-depth analysis on the current state of Digital Health deployment in Canadian health care organizations and others around the world.

The report discusses the nascent field of Digital Pathology, which is rapidly gaining momentum as a proven and essential technology that is helping to reduce laboratory expenses, improve operational efficiency, enhance productivity, and improve treatment decisions and patient care. Digital Pathology is starting to be used worldwide in drug development, reference lab, hospital, and academic medical center settings. Applications include education, research, image analysis, archival and retrieval, LIS/LIMS integration, secondary consultations, and virtual slide sharing.

"The digital pathology market is still evolving; however, there is little doubt that the benefits are powerful and will outweigh the challenges in due course of time," says Wayne Gudbranson, President and CEO of Branham Group. "However, the timeline of when a digital pathology will be fully integrated into the health care system is uncertain, and predicting this is akin to gazing into a crystal ball. Several issues underlay this uncertainty, including lack of standards, minimal regulatory clearances, and resistance to change, to name a few. On the IT side, more integration of digital images with computer systems (e.g., LIS, PACS) is needed, as well as standards and benchmarks for the entire digital imaging process."

The report has been produced as part of Branham's Digital Health NOW offering, which provides unbiased information and analysis of trends in Digital Health, and an in-depth analysis on the current state of Digital Health deployment in Canadian healthcare organizations.

This comprehensive report provides in-depth analysis on Canada’s leading ICT companies over the past 3 years (2008-2010), based on Branham300 data findings.

Key report findings that can be found in this year’s report include:

The recovery of Canada’s ICT Industry is a work-in-progress - Canada’s ICT industry leaders rebounded from a 6.11% decline in revenues in 2009, increasing sales by 3.66% to $73.93 billion in 2010. However, Industry sales still trail the $75.97 billion generated in 2008.

The geographic composition of the Industry has shifted – More emerging ICT players are operating in Quebec, B.C. and Prairie markets, while several Ontario players have been involved in M&A activity with foreign ICT players.

Leading Industry players are reducing expenditures in core company activities - Investment in core business areas (research and development, sales and marketing, and general and administrative) declined from 2008 to 2010, with one area seeing more than a 28% decline in overall expenditure over the past three years.

Revenue per employee figures at Canadian ICT players increased marginally from 2008 to 2010 – Workforce reductions offset overall declines in Industry revenues, leading to a slight increase in productivity figures over the past three years.

During tough economic times, Canadian ICT leaders generate more business at home – More Industry revenues were generated from Canadian markets, at the expense of U.S. and EMEA markets from 2008 to 2010.

Canada’s largest ICT players drive Industry growth in 2010 – Companies generating more than $40M in annual sales realised higher levels of overall revenue growth in 2010, while companies generating lower levels of revenues continued to struggle.

“The exhaustive dataset included in this three-year review of Canada’s ICT Industry illustrates that Canada’s innovative ICT leaders undoubtedly felt the effects of the challenging economic climate, but indicators show that market conditions are improving," said Darren Anderson, Research Analyst and Branham300 Coordinator at Branham Group. “I am bullish that with the relative strength and stability of Canada’s economy, Canada’s ICT Industry is poised to return to its status as a growth engine for local and provincial economies across Canada.”

“The significant drop in overall expenditure in these key areas is a cause for concern for the long-term outlook of Canada’s ICT Industry," said Andrew Bisson, Vice President of Consulting Services at Branham Group. “Canada’s ICT Industry leaders must refocus their resources in these core areas in order to continue to produce innovative products, services and solutions that are on the cutting edge, and position themselves as leaders not only in Canada, but also in the global ICT Industry marketplace.”

Canada’s ICT Industry: A National Perspective is a valuable resource for those that operate within the Canadian ICT industry as well as those that track it (venture capitalists and investors, government departments and agencies, economic development agencies, and industry associations and non-profit organizations). The 2011 edition of the report is broken down into four major sections, including:

An overview of the Canadian ICT industry

An extensive analysis of each of Canada’s provinces and regions

An in-depth examination of each Canadian ICT Industry sub-sector

A detailed breakdown of the quintiles comprising the Branham300’s Top 250 listing

The extensive report includes 90 figures and 15 tables, as it provides comprehensive intelligence on key industry metrics (key industry players, revenue, revenue growth, revenue per employee, research & development investment, general & administrative costs, sales & marketing expenses, national and international revenue sources) along with extensive discussion on the happenings within the Canadian ICT industry during the past three years.
This series of nine reports provides an in-depth view of key PPM solutions, including AtTask, CA Clarity PPM, Compuware Changepoint, Daptiv PPM, HP PPM Center, Microsoft EPM, Oracle Primavera, Planview Enterprise and Serena PPM.

The study looks at how each vendor stacks up in terms of its overall focus and core PPM product capability. Corporate overviews, product overviews, technical deep dives and overall assessments of a solutions core strengths and weaknesses are detailed in each of the reports. In fact, each report provides an in-depth evaluation of a defined solution across 44 technical criteria, broken down into five core segments: solution components, core PPM features and functionality, user interface, solution resilience and integration and infrastructure. Criteria are also rated for all vendors in the form of a technical comparison matrix, using a five metric scale (ranging from No Support to Extensive Support).

"This dynamic space includes a variety of vendors, each of which is adding its own approach to PPM," says Christian Gravelle, Senior Technical Analyst at Branham Group. “Microsoft continues to provide a strong solution for Windows-based environments, with vendors like CA and HP offering full-featured solutions for large organizations with heterogeneous infrastructures. AtTask’s use of the increasingly popular social networking movement is a unique spin that provides team members and managers with a realistic view into a projects status; including quantitative and qualitative insight."

According to Andrew Bisson, Vice President of Consulting Services, "The PPM marketplace is a significant one in that it continues to evolve with many established and emerging players adding new capabilities while creating their own ‘place’ in the market. While this years study covers nine of the major players, there are several others that bring their own niche solutions to the table, with each vendor catering to unique customer environments. Expect to see some consolidation as this marketplace continues to advance.”

Highlights

While every vendor solution needs to be looked at on a case by case basis to find the best fit for the specific needs of the customer, there are unique strengths amongst each of those that were included as part of the PPM Vendor Landscape study:

AtTask – provides a particularly interesting use of social networking to better engage team members while providing managers with both quantitative and qualitative insight into a project’s status.

CA Clarity PPM – offers larger customers a mature, competitive, well rounded solution.

Compuware Changepoint – provides good focus on users providing mobile access and a document subscription model where any new related "knowledge" posted in a user's subscription is automatically published in their portal.

Daptiv PPM – through its Daptiv Connect and other components, goes a long way to address some of the more common limitations associated with SaaS solutions.

HP PPM Center – is part of a larger strategy that can include multiple products in a symbiotic relationship. HP can provide extensive functionality through various modules allowing enterprise customers to build a solution that best fits their needs.

Microsoft EPM – has seen some of the largest changes in amalgamating its Project and Portfolio Servers. Now built on the popular Microsoft SharePoint Server, it provides customers with team collaboration and document management facilities with which they are likely already familiar.

Oracle Primavera – with increased integration into its financial, human capital management, and other products, is in a position to provide customers with a more comprehensive solution.

Planview Enterprise – provides strong Service Portfolio Management capabilities and can provide customers with industry best practices to help maximize the value of an implementation.

Serena PPM – provides a significant solution (and corresponding portfolio) for organizations that focus on application development projects, and allows organizations to create complex processes that incorporate additional third party solutions.

---

The PPM Vendor Landscape reports are a valuable resource for those who are seeking to create or validate a shortlist of suitable solutions based on their specific needs and priorities. It is also a must-have resource for product managers seeking to understand their capabilities and positioning relative to other vendors.
As Branham predicted in last year’s edition of the Branham300, Canada’s ICT industry realized modest growth in 2010, as cumulative revenues for the Top 250 Canadian ICT companies increased 3.66 per cent to $73.93 billion, up from $71.32 billion in 2009 but still trailing the $75.97 billion generated in 2008.

“The past two-plus years put much of Canada’s ICT industry in survival mode, as companies’ conserved cash, cut costs and reduced overall spend”, said Wayne Gudbranson, President and CEO of Branham Group. “This year’s Branham300 data shows that while Canada’s ICT industry still felt the effects of a challenging economic climate in 2010, overall the market is beginning to improve. The growth that the industry experienced in 2010 is something to build on moving forward, but there is no question that the recovery of Canada’s innovative ICT industry is still a work in progress.”

The Top Performers

For the second consecutive year, Waterloo, Ont.-based Research In Motion (RIM) takes the top spot on the Branham300, solidifying its status as Canada’s undisputed ICT industry leader. The wireless pioneer generated approximately $14.87 billion in revenues in its 2010 fiscal year, up more than 35 per cent compared to its 2009 results. RIM’s overall presence in Canada’s ICT industry became increasingly clear in 2010 as it was one of the key drivers of the ICT industry’s modest growth. In fact, netting RIM’s revenues from the past two year’s data illustrates that without the BlackBerry maker, Canada’s ICT industry would have experienced a 1.14 per cent decline in revenues in 2010 overall.

The Big Three Canadian telecommunication companies landed in the second through fourth spots on this year’s listing, with all three firms experiencing modest single-digit growth in 2010. Although comprehensive financial and subscriber information is not available for the wireless upstarts – Mobilicity, Wind Mobile and Public Mobile – that entered the market in 2010, there is debate that these players are gaining traction in urban markets across Canada. With more established players having already entered the market (Vidéotron) and others planning to do so over the next year (Shaw Communications), combined with the fact that Industry Canada has already made announcements that it plans to hold another wireless spectrum auction in the not-so-distant future, the Canadian wireless market is set to become a lot more competitive in the years to come.

For the ninth consecutive year, CGI Group headlines this year’s crop of ICT Professional Services companies, despite experiencing a slight decline (2.43 per cent) in total revenues to $3.73 billion in 2010. CGI Group took major steps to further increase its presence within the public sector, when it completed the Canadian ICT industry’s largest acquisition in 2010, purchasing U.S.-based Stanley for approximately $923.15 million in mid-August 2010. Although the full affect of the deal will not be realized until later in its 2011 fiscal year, early indications are positive, as CGI Group has already released its first quarter results for fiscal 2011 and sales are up more than 22 per cent year-over-year to approximately $1.12 billion.
Open Text leads the Canadian Software sector on the Branham300 again this year, closing yet another year of positive growth as revenues increased more than 16 per cent to $907.10 million in 2010. The enterprise content management specialist continued to add to its robust suite of solutions throughout 2010, acquiring several leading players, including Nstein Technologies and Burntsand, both former Branham300 companies. Look for the Waterloo, Ont.-based company to leverage its recent acquisitions as it strives towards the billion dollar mark in annual sales for the first time in its 20 year existence.

Three of Four Industry Sectors Realize Growth in 2010

Three of the four major sectors that make-up the Canadian ICT industry experienced positive growth in 2010. The Canadian xSP sector, largely consisting of Internet, wireless and application service providers, was the primary driver of growth for Canada’s ICT industry, as the sector increased revenues from $27.78 billion in 2009 to $29.89 billion in 2010, an increase of 7.60 per cent. The ICT Professional Services sector, last year’s fastest growing industry-segment, followed with a 3.26 per cent increase in revenues to $10.65 billion in 2010. Canada’s ICT Hardware and Infrastructure sector, the hardest hit segment in 2009, rebounded slightly in 2010 as cumulative revenues rose 1.31 per cent to $29.12 billion in 2010. Meanwhile, the Canadian Software sector was the lone industry segment that realized a decline in cumulative revenues, falling 4.65 per cent from $4.48 billion in 2009 to $4.27 billion in 2010.

ICT Industry Experiences Growth from Coast-to-Coast

While the ICT industry stretches from coast-to-coast in Canada, the overwhelming percentage of the industry’s activities take place in four of Canada’s ten provinces. These four provinces – Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec – represented more than 97 per cent of total revenues on this year’s Branham300, up slightly from 2009 figures. Ontario companies listed on the 2011 Edition of the Branham300 generated approximately $41.10 billion in revenues in 2010, up 1.01 per cent compared to 2009, while listed companies headquartered in Quebec increased revenues by 2.22 per cent to $16.77 billion in 2010. British Columbia-based ICT companies listed on this year’s Branham300 experienced strong growth, boosting revenues by 6.34 per cent compared to 2009 figures, to $9.87 billion in 2010. Picking up where it left off last year, Alberta continued its emergence as a hot-bed for leading ICT activity as the province realized a 46 per cent increase in provincial revenues to $4.12 billion, driven by increased representation on this year’s Branham300 and continued success among the provinces core technology companies.

Looking Forward to 2011

The modest growth that Canada’s ICT elite experienced in 2010 is a positive indicator that the Canadian ICT industry is on the road to recovery. However, with cumulative Branham300 revenues still trailing 2008 levels, the industry’s resurgence is still a work in progress. The next twelve months will indicate whether or not Canada’s innovative ICT industry has learned from the events of the past two-plus years and can leverage the positives from the economic downturn in order to emerge stronger and more innovative in 2011 and beyond.
healthcare sector, has re-branded its healthcare ICT practice to Digital Health.

The use of information technology and other related technologies in the field of healthcare are attracting a lot of attention and interest, and it is anticipated that its use will only increase in the coming years. "Based on the market sensitivity analysis that we conducted and discussions with our clients, terms such as eHealth are considered passé and not reflective of the trends in technology use in the healthcare sector," according to Wayne Gudbranson, President & CEO of Branham Group Inc."Everyone we contacted were instantly comfortable with the term Digital Health."

Digital Health is a more proactive reflection of current and future trends in the communications of all forms of data between a myriad of devices and disparate systems across the emerging connected continuum of care in countries around the world. Branham's comprehensive subscription services and custom consulting services will use the new Digital Health branding.

As the Canadian healthcare system transitions from a reactive model with information silos to a proactive system of wellness with an interconnected continuum of care, several "cool" technologies are starting to find greater application. The need to control rising healthcare costs while continuing to maintain a high quality of healthcare in Canada is expected to drive the application of several advanced and disruptive technologies.

Innovative or "cool technologies" refers to novel medical technology solutions (or devices) developed to address health problems and improve quality of life. For the purpose of this report, Branham has defined a "cool technology" as one that is innovative, is recent in its application or is expected to find increased application in coming years, and is likely to significantly affect the delivery of healthcare.

"Some of the key technologies that will find increased acceptance in the healthcare community include robotics, wireless communications, biosensors, system on chip (SOC), smartphones, service platform technologies, and advanced diagnostic imaging," says Wayne Gudbranson, President & CEO of Branham Group Inc. He further states, "Some trends that will drive the emergence of innovative technologies include self-care and other alternative methods of care delivery, emergency preparedness, and the increased need for privacy and security of patient information."

The report is accessible through Branham's eHealth NOW subscription services program.

Recognizing the Top 300 publicly-traded and privately-held Canadian ICT companies, the Top 25 Up and Coming Canadian ICT start-ups, and the Top 25 ICT Multinationals with operations in Canada, the Branham300 demonstrates the depth and breadth of innovative technology offered by Canadian companies and the contribution these organizations make to the economy both nationally and provincially.

"The Branham300 has constantly evolved and grown in an effort to provide ICT Industry stakeholders with the most accurate information on the happenings within the Canadian ICT Industry," said Wayne Gudbranson, President and CEO of Branham Group. "However, during its 17-year history, the vision behind the listing has remained the same – The Branham300 strives to raise the profile of the Canadian ICT Industry and recognize its leaders on both a National and International stage."

2009 – A Year of Opportunity and Hardship

Albeit turbulent, 2009 closed out an extremely successful decade for the Canadian ICT industry. The economic environment that developed in late-2008 and remained for much of 2009 resulted in a mix of opportunity and hardship for the Industry's leading firms, with the Top 250 companies appearing on this year’s Branham300 combining to generate $71.32 billion in revenue, down six per cent compared to 2008, but up 43 per cent compared to 2003; the first year that Branham compiled its Top 250 listing.

Merger and acquisition (M&A) activity and currency fluctuations played a prominent role in how this year's listing played out. Several leading Canadian players leveraged their healthy financial positions to expand inorganically and as a result climbed the ranks of the listing, while 13 companies generating approximate $500 million in revenues in 2008 could not return to the Top 250 in 2009 due to M&A activity and changes in organizational structure. The strong Canada-U.S. exchange rate, which fluctuated upwards throughout the year to close almost 20 cents higher than 2008, impacted companies on the list considerably. With more than half the list generating 20 per cent or more of its business south of the border, Canadian firms will face increased competition moving forward as the currency advantage that they enjoyed for much of the past ten years likely will not be present as the industry enters a fresh decade.

"The past 12-to-18 months proved to be challenging for all industries, and the Canadian ICT Industry was no exception," notes Gudbranson. "The economics of the Canadian ICT Industry have changed significantly and the players operating within it must adapt. Nevertheless, the leading firms within this Industry have overcome difficult business conditions in the past and combined to grow by more than 40 per cent since 2003, so I have no doubt that Canada's ICT Industry will bounce back and realize modest growth in 2010."

The Top Performers

When 2009 is looked back upon, it will be recognized as a transitional period for the Canadian ICT Industry. For the first time in seven years, the Top 250 crowned a new number one company. As Nortel Networks underwent aggressive restructuring, which eventually led to the sale of most of its major operating units, Research In Motion (RIM) capped off an impressive decade, in which it produced double-digit revenue growth in all but one year, to surge to the peak of the Top 250 listing. During its 2009 fiscal year the wireless solutions company increased its revenues by 84 per cent to $11.58 billion; mainly attributed to an 89 per cent increase in device sales and the addition of 11 million net-new subscribers.

The Big Three Canadian telecommunications firms all ranked in the top five in 2009. BCE climbed one position to land in the second spot on this year's list, generating $8.27 billon in revenue in 2009. Rogers Communications jumped three spots in 2009 to rank third, increasing sales by an estimated 8 per cent to $7.42 billion this year, while Telus boosted revenues by approximately 2 per cent to $6.86 billion ascending one position to the number four spot in 2009.

Leading this year's Top 10 in year-over-year growth were Shaw Communications and CAE, which both increased sales by 17 per cent. While Shaw Communications continues to plan its entry into the wireless space with the spectrum licenses it acquired during the 2008 Canadian Wireless Spectrum Auction, the company continues to grow its existing customer base allowing it to generate just under $2 billion in revenues this year. Meanwhile, CAE experienced annual revenue increases in each of its major operating segments, allowing the company to reach $1.66 billion in sales in 2009.

Three of Four Industry Sectors Realize Growth in 2009

Despite the Top 250 listing's overall decline in aggregate revenues, three of the four major ICT Industry sectors realized positive growth in 2009. The ICT Professional Services sector realized the sharpest increase in revenues compared to last year, as the 72 firms representing the sector on the Top 250 this year combined to generate $10.32 billion in revenues, up 21 per cent compared to 2008. The Software and x Service Provider sectors followed, increasing sales by 13 per cent and 3 per cent to $4.48 billion and $27.78 billion in 2009, respectively.

The ICT Hardware and Infrastructure sector was hit hardest in 2009, as existing and potential clients reduced overall ICT infrastructure spend and delayed major investments. As a result, combined revenues for the category fell 21 per cent this year to $28.75 billion, compared to $36.61 billion in 2008. Sector leaders did not fair any better, with the category's Top 25 companies generating $27.91 billion in sales, down 22 per cent compared to 2008.

Major Trends in 2009 and What to Expect in 2010

After a relatively quiet 2008, this past year marked the return of feverish M&A activity within the Canadian ICT industry, as several prominent deals took place: Open Text completed a mega-deal as it acquired U.S.-based Vignette, Groupe GFI Solutions purchased Fortsum Business Solutions (ranked 109 on last year's Top 250), Integrated Device Technology bought Tundra Semiconductor (ranked 59 on last year's Top 250) and Constellation Software continued its rapid expansion by acquiring 13 companies in 2009. Expect an abundance of M&A activity to continue in the Canadian ICT Industry in 2010 as companies in good financial standing look to capitalize on opportunities in an effort to expand customer bases, product portfolios and overall presence within the Industry.

Overall investment in research and development, sales and marketing, and other core activities took a significant hit in 2009 as companies entered maintenance mode for much of the year, focusing instead on near-term profitability and cash flow pressures. Much like the turn of the millennium, the events of 2009 have taught the Industry not to take the economic environment for granted. With the turmoil of the past year firmly entrenched in most firms recent memories, it is likely that companies will cautiously expand budgets and increase spend on existing projects, while carefully allocating resources to new and emerging technologies, that were pushed to the backburner throughout 2009. With newfound confidence and a somewhat optimistic economic outlook for the coming year, Branham expects moderate growth to return to the Canadian ICT industry in 2010.

There is a growing awareness of the need to improve efficiencies in the system and enhance the patient experience. Over the past few years, focus on leveraging technology for achieving greater efficiency in the healthcare sector has increased manifold. Information and Communications Technology (ICT) now forms a major component of the move towards a more patient centric model of healthcare delivery. This requires applications to talk with each other, allow access to information by those who need it and ensure information flow in the correct way. Interoperability, hence, has become the number one challenge on the road to achieving an interoperable electronic health record.

Branham’s study focuses on the major trends and requirements of buyers and sellers of eHealth solutions across Canada. Over 450 vendors and 1,000 buyers were contacted for the study that focused on both syntactic and semantic interoperability requirements. "Over 75% of all respondents fundamentally believe that interoperability capabilities in eHealth solutions are of paramount importance," says Wayne Gudbranson, President & CEO of Branham Group Inc. He further states, "the respondents clearly understand the information exchange is becoming a significant requirement to effect transformative change in the healthcare system. Interoperability is at the very core of achieving information exchange." The study provided insightful data points, including:

85% of vendors deem interoperability as a key selling feature for their eHealth product solutions

75% of vendors feel the lack of well-defined and broadly accepted guidelines has impeded their ability to create interoperable products for buyers

63% of buyers would benefit from interoperability testing for both semantic and syntactic requirements,

Total annual spend on eHealth interoperability is estimated to be $366 million in Canada, and

Average Annual spend by Buyers on interoperability testing requirements can be upwards of $500K

The report entitled State of eHealth Interoperability in Canada is accessible through Branham’s eHealth NOW subscription services program.

One of the key ingredients in this transformative movement is the need for more integrated information flows supported by healthcare ICT or eHealth across the Continuum of Care. The building blocks for the Continuum of Care already exist; what’s lacking is the integration and seamless exchange of information between and across these components. The acute care or hospital segment is no longer the primary point of eHealth deployment and utilization but is one of many. Information regarding the patient must be made available to all healthcare providers.

Branham has produced a model which tracks all eHealth products and services across the Continuum of Care. “We have categorized key point and multi-point eHealth technologies and vendors in our model,” says Wayne Gudbranson, President & CEO of Branham Group Inc. He further states, “This model is an excellent tool for eHealth vendors to understand how they are positioned in the healthcare marketplace. It is also a great tool for buyers to identify a range of solutions that address their requirements.”
The Continuum of Care eHealth Model is accessible through Branham’s eHealth NOW subscription services program.

Over the past seven years, Symantec and Branham Group have spearheaded this initiative, which assesses how key decision makers view and respond to IT security challenges in Canadian enterprises. One hundred senior managers with enterprise security responsibility in organizations with annual revenues of more than $50 million were interviewed to gain insight into Canadian enterprise IT security issues. This year's respondents represent a diverse cross-section of the Canadian economy, with 35 per cent coming from the High-Tech, Manufacturing and Energy sectors. This report highlights changes over the past 12 months and provides trending data for the survey period between 2003 and 2009.

"While IT security may have taken a slight hit on the corporate agenda as a result of the economic woes that have plagued much of the country over the past year, enterprise organizations across Canada continue to take a more proactive approach to IT security, even despite reduced budgets", notes Andrew Bisson, Branham’s Vice President of Consulting Services. "This year's study results reflect the ever changing threatscape, and the measures Canadians are taking to protect themselves."

"IT security is becoming so visible within the media and other outlets that organizations are making it more of a priority", adds Michael Murphy, Vice President and General Manager of Symantec Canada. "IT Security decision makers must allocate their spend strategically to ensure their organizations assets are protected from threats that are becoming increasingly sophisticated."

The event was a timely panel discussion of Green IT leaders facilitated by Wayne Gudbranson, President and CEO of the Branham Group. The panel members represented companies offering unique solutions in the Green IT space, and included Alfred Hambsch, President of GEEP Inc. (an electric and electronic waste management company); Scott Martin, Director of Sales at ThinDesk (a company providing thin computing solutions); Jean-Jerome Baudry, CEO and Founder of Baudry Cybernomics Corp. (an IT professional services firm); and Michael Glenn, VP and CTO of Zerofootprint Software Inc. (a provider of emissions management software solutions).

The panel discussion focused on the following key topics:

The market opportunity for Green IT

Understanding the key trends in Green IT within the Canadian perspective

Green IT as a competitive differentiator

The challenges for companies adopting a Green IT strategy, and

Key customer needs and requirements from a Green IT product or service

All the panelists expect the Green IT space to grow exponentially in coming years as an increasing number of companies seek to drive cost efficiencies and meet green objectives through their ICT infrastructure. They also believe that while Canada has not done enough to move the green agenda forward so far, there will probably be significant movement on this front in 2010-2011. According to Ted Dhillon, Director of Green IT at the Branham Group, “As North America moves towards adopting legislations that put a price on carbon emissions, companies will increasingly need to look at Green IT both as a source of emissions as well as an enabler of solutions to the carbon conundrum. The question is not about whether that will happen, but when.” He further states, “The transition to a carbon constrained economy will create both risks and opportunities for vendors and consumers of ICT. The need to learn more about how Green IT can help in the fight against climate change has never been greater.”
Project and Portfolio Management (PPM) Vendor Landscape study is a
series of eight reports that provide an in-depth view of key PPM
solutions, including CA Clarity PPM, Serena Mariner, Oracle Primavera,
Daptiv PPM, Planview Enterprise, Compuware Changepoint, Microsoft Office EPM and HP PPM
Center.

Each report provides an in-depth evaluation of a vendor’s solution
across 41 technical criteria and covers a series of topics with an
overall strengths and weaknesses assessment to provide readers with an
understanding of both the vendor and the offering. In addition, reports
also include a technical comparison matrix that compares the
capabilities of all eight solutions using a five metric scale (ranging
from No Support to Extensive Support).

are seeking to create or validate a shortlist of suitable solutions
based on their specific needs and priorities. It is also a must-have
resource for product managers seeking to understand their capabilities

This series of eight reports provides an in-depth view of key PPM solutions, including CA Clarity PPM, Serena Mariner, Oracle Primavera, Daptiv PPM, Planview Enterprise, Compuware Changepoint and HP PPM Center.

Each report provides an in-depth evaluation of one vendors solution across 41 technical criteria and covers a series of topics to provide readers with an understanding of both the vendor and the offering. In addition, reports also include a technical comparison matrix that compares the capabilities of all eight solutions using a five metric scale (ranging from No Support to Extensive Support).

"This dynamic space includes a variety of vendors, each of which are taking their own approach to PPM," says Christian Gravelle, Senior Technical Analyst at Branham Group. Microsoft continues to provide a strong solution for Windows-based environments, with vendors like CA and HP offering full-featured solutions for large organizations with heterogeneous infrastructures. Oracle's recent acquisition of Primavera has been a significant development which has given Oracle some unique strengths but poses some potential challenges for customers going forward." According to Andrew Bisson, Vice President of Consulting Services, "One important trend we have seen in the past two years is a shift toward SaaS offerings for mid-sized enterprises, even among the larger vendors of full-featured solutions. With its unique focus on the mid-office, Daptiv is an interesting solution for those looking to gain more visibility into the activities that are typically overlooked by some of the enterprise-scale solutions."

The PPM Vendor Landscape series is a valuable resource for those who are seeking to create or validate a shortlist of suitable solutions based on their specific needs and priorities. It is also a must-have resource for product managers seeking to understand their capabilities and positioning relative to other vendors.

For more information on how to access this series of reports, please contact:

Andrew Bisson (abisson@branhamgroup.com)
Vice President, Consulting Services
Branham Group Inc.
613-745-2282 ext. 117

About Branham Group Inc.
Branham Group is a leading industry analyst and strategic consulting firm servicing the global information & communications technology (ICT) marketplace.
