Following best practices usually makes a developer’s life much easier in the long run, but the mindset often becomes less and less appealing as a deadline, or happy hour, draws near. In other cases, best practices arrive conveniently on the scene… after one has laboriously done something a different way.

Both easy to access and quick to edit, the functions.php file of a WordPress installation has been the focal point of countless tutorials and how-tos, which guide users through adding custom features and functionalities to their blogs. Though editing this file is no doubt a legitimate and commonly used way to add custom functions, it is subsequently, a far-from-best-practice solution for multiple reasons:

The customizations are theme-specific, not site-specific

Syntax errors in the customizations can break a site

Custom code crammed into the file can be difficult to keep organized

For these reasons, more and more developers are avoiding extra work by ceasing to edit the functions.php file and creating a site-specific plugin to store their custom functions.

What is a site-specific plugin?
Think of a site-specific plugin as a file made specifically for a developer to add custom functions to.

A site-specific plugin is used the exact same way one would use a functions.php file to add customizations

A site-specific plugin contains no code except a developer’s custom functions

A site-specific plugin adds functions to an entire site, and not just to a theme

So why is creating a site-specific plugin to store custom functions a better solution than storing them in a functions.php file?

More flexibility and seamlessness

More safety and reliability

More organization and efficiency overall

1. More flexibility and seamlessness
Adding custom functions to a WordPress blog by editing the functions.php file will, almost certainly, cause unnecessary work down the road. Since the file lies in a WordPress blog’s theme directory, customizations made there are theme-specific, a fact that is often overlooked until an upgrade or change in themes is attempted. In the simplest terms, this means that any customizations a developer has added to a blog by editing the functions.php file will not be present when the new theme is activated.

When utilizing a site-specific plugin, switching between themes becomes a seamless process with all relevant customizations intact; no additional work is necessary. Any change in theme can be tested and applied with ease since the developer doesn’t have to worry about copying and pasting code from an edited functions.php file, or creating a duplicate, to replace the new theme’s existing one.

Using a site-specific plugin also allows a WordPress blog’s other active plugins to access its custom functions. It eliminates the need for a developer to make any extra customizations to ensure newly added plugins integrate with the site-specific functions as intended. It makes working with mobile themes, such as those supported by WPtouch Pro, especially easy for developers.

2. Safety and Reliability
Since the functions.php file contains a blog’s default features and functionalities, tinkering with it can be dangerous. When editing the file, any error in syntax can lead to what many developers refer to as “the white screen of death,” which breaks the site, and locks the developer out of the admin area.

Site-specific plugins create a much more user-friendly environment for adding custom functions, since by default, the plugin is deactivated right away if it causes a breakage. In other words, if something goes wrong, the plugin shuts down, not the entire site.

3. Organization and Efficiency
Instead of packing the functions.php file to the brim, making it extremely large and extremely difficult to navigate, a site-specific plugin provides developers with a single area to store all their custom functions, separate from where the blog’s default ones are stored.

Site-specific plugins allow developers to be more efficient, eliminating both the need to recreate customization efforts, and having to search through an edited functions.php file to find them.

The Process
Creating a site-specific plugin takes less than five minutes.

Simply create a file in the directory /wp-content/plugins/, name it, and add the code below:

<?php
/*
Plugin Name: My Site-Specific Plugin (or whatever you like)
Description: All site specific functionality goes here.
*/
/* Add your functions below this line */
/* Add your functions above this line */
?>

When editing the functions.php file is okay
There are definitely specific instances when editing a functions.php file is the best way to go, but only when a developer’s intention is to create custom functions that apply directly to a specific theme. A good question to ask when making a judgment call between which method to use is, “Upon changing themes, should this functionality or feature stay active on the site?” If the answer is yes, the function should be stored in a site-specific plugin, not the functions.php file.

We’ve very pleased to debut our new logo which kicks off the first of a number of exciting new changes we have planned for the coming weeks (more on those other new developments to come, stay tuned to our blog and social media channels for updates).

Our new logo captures the spirit of BraveNewCode, symbolizing our goal of delivering excellent products that revolutionize standards for WordPress mobile development. The logo’s design includes elements that reflect our identity as a development shop and our attitude as explorers and innovators.

Ship motif
Early on in our design process it became obvious that the image of a ship would best represent our company identity. The ship reflects our brave attitude as well as our respect and appreciation of the environment we live in. It expresses our approach to searching frontiers while recognizing the need to keep the processes as down-to-earth as possible.

Other elements
Nods to technology in our logo include the code element in our company title and the round status symbol enveloping the ship. The full sail and wake thrown up at the bow of the ship represents the speed of our progress on these travels we take with you, our valued users and customers.

Our logo was designed by talented, west coast artist and designer, Cara McCarthy. We are grateful to Cara for her dedication and attention to detail in delivering our new logo to us.

In the coming weeks we’ll be living up to the ideals symbolized in our logo in ways we expect will surprise and delight. Looking forward to sharing the journey with you!

An article was floating around the web today showing that WordPress now dominates the top 100 blogs. From the data it appears that 49 of the top 100 blogs are running WordPress at this stage, which is great since it’s the platform that WPtouch runs on, and we love WordPress!

When the article came out I went through the websites methodically to see how those websites stacked up in the mobile space. The results of what type of mobile solution they are using is shown in the pie chart below.

First, somewhat surprisingly, is the fact that 23 out of those 49 sites still do not appear to have any type of iPhone compatible mobile site (47%).

Nine sites seem to have rolled their own custom mobile solutions, or are using some type of theme that has it built in (it’s hard to tell exactly what they are doing on some of these sites) (18%) – but at least they appear to have a mobile-friendly version.

And in third place, right behind None and Custom solutions, are sites that use either WPtouch or WPtouch Pro – there are 8 of those out of 49 sites, representing 16% of the total 49.

The final 18% of the pie is powered by Mobify (5 blogs over 2 domains), WordPress Mobile Pack (1), Mobile High Theme (1), Obox Mobile (1), and the Carrington Mobile theme (1).

Excluding sites that don’t appear to have made any mobile effort whatsoever (23 of them), WPtouch and WPtouch Pro power roughly 31% of the top mobile-powered WordPress blogs in the world (8 out of 26).

So if you can spare five or ten minutes and are looking to make your WordPress-powered website mobile friendly, then check out the free WPtouch plugin or our premium WPtouch Pro plugin.

1. All tests were performed by looking at the site’s response to the iPhone user-agent and then looking at the source and rendered site output.

I didn’t really know what to expect, but I was ready to find out what WordCamp is all about. I left my apartment Saturday at 5 in the morning with my laptop, 40 </allnighter> buttons to give away and eagerness to meet new friends and learn more about WordPress.

Registration was quick since we were some of the first people to arrive. We received our very cool name tags, an awesome looking t-shirt and made our way upstairs where it was snacks galore. There were plenty of pastries, snack bars, fruit, coffee and other beverages.

I really enjoyed all the sessions I attended, but particularly enjoyed Gary Magnone’s “SEO for WordPress”. Gary’s session, like all the others, was filled with lots of great information and he was even nice enough to stick around for a little while to answer some of our questions regarding SEO. He happily answered a question I had about permalinks and page extensions. Check out Gary’s slides here.

Stay Classy WordPress

For lunch I chose a delicious chicken sandwich and enjoyed it over a very nice chat with Nash. It was also his first WordCamp. He seemed to really be enjoying his time. Plus he was the lucky winner of the brand new iPad given out by the guys at Sucuri Security!

All in all it was a great first time experience. The friendliness, eagerness to share knowledge and enthusiasm towards WordPress by everyone I met was incredible. Thank you to everyone involved in making WordCamp San Diego a success, thanks to the new friends I made and thanks to the awesome company I work for, BraveNewCode.

We’ve seen a lot of great affiliate posts over the past few weeks and thought we’d share some practices that we’ve noticed have been working for some of our more successful affiliates.

Take advantage of the image and media resources available in the Affiliate Center in our Support Forums to add visual interest to your content. Banner ads placed strategically throughout your site may help draw traffic to your affiliate links.

Use social media channels to help raise awareness of your affiliate related content. We’ve noticed many of our more successful affiliates tweet announcements more than once and make an effort to engage audience members in discussions on Facebook.

Writing for the web tips:

Most people scan pages looking for words that catch their eye, so web content should be short, scannable, and to the point.

Break up large blocks of text and use plenty of specific headings.

Where possible, keep your content informal and conversational. Read it out loud … does it sound natural?

Keep an eye out for typos in our plugin names to help visitors searching your site. Spelling guidelines:

WPtouch Pro

WPtouch

BraveNewCode (Inc.)

Watch out for variations such as WP touch or Wptouch (incorrect)

In case you’re interested, we shared some links to our top affiliates’ sites in our February affiliate e-newsletter. Sign up for our e-newsletter to receive updates, tips and other special announcements.

Happy posting, @all!

Big thanks to everyone who participated. We really enjoyed hearing your views and suggestions regarding the work that we do.

Below are a few of the stats we pulled from our survey results.

We were humbled by the 95% satisfaction rate recorded and inspired to shoot for an even better score moving forward. Being the perfectionists that we are, we’re going to do our best to achieve 100% next time around!

We were very pleased that an overwhelming number of respondents, 100% of our email survey respondents and 85% of our social media respondents, indicated they would recommend our plugins to others.

Our results indicate the majority of our current plugin users are male and between the ages of 24 to 44 years.

We realize the importance of reaching out to engage all members of our diverse customer base that incorporates users from six continents.

Are you satisfied with the BraveNewCode product(s) that you use? (by percentage)

Unlike many advertising options that typically advertise websites, products or services, Appstores allows publishers to advertise mobile-specific applications which can be downloaded onto an end-user’s phone. Here’s a description of how it works from Appstore’s site:

Is your website optimized for mobile? Yes? Great, you can make more money by recommending apps. Here’s how it works: we look at the content of your mobile site, and we surface the most relevant apps. Users love it because they get highly relevant apps. You’ll love it, because the engagement will be higher than vanilla mobile banners. Developers will love it because for once, they are getting relevant app downloads. Everyone wins.

This is an exciting new area for mobile advertising, and BraveNewCode is proud to be a launching partner with the Appstores team.

The changes have already been incorporated into the WPtouch 1.9.x codebase, so you can update to it immediately and try out the new Appstores advertising option. We’ll also be incorporating this new advertising option in WPtouch Pro soon, so look for that in the near future.

The GoMo website includes useful information and powerful statistics to show you why going mobile should be an important part of your online business plan & future.

It will also allow you to test your website, and will give you a ranking of 1-4 in terms of the quality of the mobile experience you’re offering visitors.

Lastly it provides a small, non-WordPress list of vendors that assist in building mobile sites. We’re not yet listed, but that will likely change, and folks like us will be included.

Adwords Quality Score Now Affected by Mobile Sites

Google also recently announced that mobile site optimization now affects your AdWords Quality Score. This means that serving ads to mobile visitors with a mobile-optimized website will earn you a higher rank.

The AdWords system will automatically visit your landing page, and evaluate your site as viewed by smartphones. However, if you already have a mobile site, we recommend confirming with your webmaster that you’ve configured your server to show the mobile-optimized site when the AdWords mobile User-Agent is detected.

So in both cases, WPtouch & WPtouch Pro powered WordPress websites score perfect and will help you both with your business presence online in an increasingly mobile ‘webscape’, while also improving your Adwords quality & revenue.

Yesterday we were contacted by the Twitter API team and informed that WordTwit Pro‘s use of the API was not inline with the Twitter’s terms of service for third-party applications. The reasons given by the Twitter API team were:

“[WordTwit Pro] facilitates serial posting across multiple accounts, tweet/retweet automation, tweet branding and automated affiliate advertising.”

After reviewing the alleged violations by the Twitter API team, we are of the opinion that the reasons given are not justified based on the typical use cases of WordTwit Pro users.

First, WordTwit Pro does allow a user to push a tweet out to multiple accounts simultaneously. This feature is meant to simplify management of a website where new post information would routinely by posted to multiple accounts. For example, a WPtouch-related post on BraveNewCode could be pushed to the @wptouch and @bravenewcode Twitter accounts. This functionality is by no means specific to WordTwit Pro; it exists in almost all Twitter clients available today.

Second, while WordTwit Pro does allow a user to automate certain tweets or retweets, all of these essentially have to come at the request of the end-user. This represents a form of tweet scheduling, which is also a standard feature in many Twitter services and clients.

With regards to tweet branding and affiliate advertising, we are ultimately at a loss. Other than the WordTwit Pro application registered with Twitter (which ultimately causes each tweet to be associated with WordTwit Pro), there is no branding on tweets done by BraveNewCode or WordTwit Pro. Each user has the ability to manually edit a tweet before it goes out, which is no different than most Twitter clients. We also provide a very detailed Tweet Log in WordTwit Pro, which shows every tweet that is generated by WordTwit Pro, even if they were not successfully tweeted.

Ultimately Twitter has suspended the OAuth token currently used by WordTwit Pro, which has caused WordTwit Pro installations using the default configuration to stop working. We have tried to communicate with the Twitter API team to work towards resolving the misunderstanding, but as of right now the token is suspended and they have not responded to our most recent attempts to open a dialog or to educate them further about our product.

To simplify the process of setting up WordTwit Pro, we included a generic WordTwit Pro OAuth token registered with Twitter. Since we do not know the nature of the original complaint with Twitter, we can only assume a person or company witnessed some form of SPAM associated with an installation of WordTwit Pro and reported the application in violation. Since we do not control any portion of a WordTwit Pro installation or any tweets that are generated once a user installs the software, we are unable to intervene when any users potentially abuse the product.

Going forward we are forced to remove the default token within WordTwit Pro; this means all end-users will have to register a custom application with Twitter to use with their installation. That also means each user will be responsible for abiding by Twitter’s terms of service for use of the Twitter API. Since the feature to add a custom OAuth application already exists within WordTwit Pro, current installations already using this feature are not affected by the revoked token.

If you have been affected by this, please visit this page for information on how to create a custom application with Twitter and configure WordTwit Pro to use it.

We will release version 3.3 of WordTwit Pro shortly, which will require custom applications for new installations. If you have been using the custom application feature already and you upgrade, your installation should not be affected by this change.

We apologize to anyone who has been affected by this incident, but as the token was revoked by Twitter without any prior warning, we were not able to resolve any concerns without the downtime experienced by customers.
